Write down what your neighbor was doing - having a loud party at 3 a.m. on a Tuesday, for example - each time it occurs. That way you'll be armed with some evidence of problematic behavior if you have to take any kind of action. ## Talk to Your Neighbor Approaching a neighbor who listens to loud music all night or does their own woodworking in their apartment can feel a little bit daunting. You probably just expect the person to be angry and tell you to mind your own business. If you have a good relationship with that neighbor though, they might very well be willing to listen to your complaints. When you do voice your concerns, make sure you mention how what they're doing impacts you, like not allowing you to get enough sleep for an early morning job. Talking to a neighbor won't always work, but at the very least, your neighbor might be more aware of their behavior and attempt to disrupt your life less. ## Don't Leave Notes A lot of people don't like the idea of confronting bad neighbors, so instead of a face-to-face conversation, they write out a note and slip it under the door. It might seem less confrontational to you, but to the person who gets the note, it's going to seem somewhat passive aggressive. Even worse, a note probably won't get you anywhere. You might even make your neighbor angry enough that they don't listen to any future complaints. ## Discuss Problems with Other Neighbors Talking to other neighbors isn't gossip - it's a means to an end. If you talk to other neighbors and they all have a problem, your apartment manager or landlord will be more likely to listen. One annoyed tenant isn't nearly as persuasive as five. Complain to Your Landlord Complaining to the landlord makes a lot of people feel like they're running to the teacher when another kid in elementary school is doing something wrong. You're not in elementary school though, and if you've got a neighbor that won't respond to polite requests, you need someone to intervene for the sake of your sanity. Filing a complaint with your landlord may not immediately fix the problem, but it will get their attention. When you talk to the landlord, ask them how they're going to proceed and make sure you contact them when future issues arise. If you have a manager separate from the landlord who lives in the building, letting them know about problems as well can help get them resolved faster. Where you live is up to you, but who you live next to isn't. While you might not wish bad neighbors on your worst enemy, these tips should help you deal with one quickly, efficiently and politely.
