What are some common viruses in children?Â
The
human parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs)
are a group of viruses that cause upper and lower lung infections. Parainfluenza viruses are a common cause of cold symptoms but also croup in children.
Rhinovirus
, also known as the
common cold
, is an infection of the lining of the nose, sinuses, and throat. The rhinovirus is the most common cause of colds, but other viruses can also cause colds.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
is a virus that can cause
bronchiolitis
, an infection that causes inflammation of the small airways in the lungs. RSV usually causes mild cold-like symptoms but can cause a serious lung infection in young children and infants like bronchiolitis. Most children become infected with this virus by the age of 2 to 3 years old.
Can viruses affect my child who has lung disease?Â
Yes.  Viruses can make a child’s lung disease more difficult to control and cause symptoms to worsen.  Mucous can build up inside the airways causing irritation and worsening symptoms. Viruses are one of the most common triggers for children with asthma. It is important to have an action plan in place if symptoms worsen and when to seek help. |

## Common Viruses that Affect Children
Viruses can infect us throughout our life. However, some viruses are more common in children.
#### What are some common viruses in children?
The **[human parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs)](https://www.lungsask.ca/lungs/lung-diseases/viral-infections/parainfluenza)** are a group of viruses that cause upper and lower lung infections. Parainfluenza viruses are a common cause of cold symptoms but also croup in children.
[**Rhinovirus**](https://www.lungsask.ca/lungs/lung-diseases/viral-infections/rhinovirus-common-cold), also known as the **common cold**, is an infection of the lining of the nose, sinuses, and throat. The rhinovirus is the most common cause of colds, but other viruses can also cause colds.
**[Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)](https://www.lungsask.ca/lungs/lung-diseases/viral-infections/rsv-respiratory-syncytial-virus)** is a virus that can cause **bronchiolitis**, an infection that causes inflammation of the small airways in the lungs. RSV usually causes mild cold-like symptoms but can cause a serious lung infection in young children and infants like bronchiolitis. Most children become infected with this virus by the age of 2 to 3 years old.
#### Can viruses affect my child who has lung disease?
