In most cases, the cartridge body doesn't have moving parts. The ceramic disc body/cylinder does have moving parts that pivot to open the ports on the bottom. If your kitchen or bathroom sink is leaking, follow these instructions. The repair steps below are standard, but always refer to the manufacturer's instructions for your faucet too. If the faucet leak doesn’t stop after the first valve is turned off, it’s the other line that’s leaking. Once you determine which side of the faucet is leaking, turn off both supply valves. If your valves are stuck, shut off the water main. You’ll have to replace hardware for both sides since you won’t be able to identify whether the hot or cold side is leaking. Turn faucet handles on to release any residual water. Close the drain and place a towel in the sink to protect the surface and catch dropped parts. ## Disassemble the Double-Handled Faucet ![Faucet parts laid out on towel in a sink basin.]() Remove the faucet aerator and inspect it for damage. If it’s stuck, soak a towel in vinegar and wrap it around the faucet aerator to loosen mineral deposits. After an hour, gently twist the aerator with a towel and pliers. As you disassemble the old faucet, lay the parts in order on a flat surface and snap a picture for reference. Put those parts in a plastic bag and take them to the store with you when shopping. You may require only one part, but it may be best to buy a kit and replace everything, including a new aerator if yours is damaged. ### Fix a Double-Handled Ceramic Disc Faucet ![A ceramic disc faucet.]() This type of faucet uses a cylinder with tiny discs on the bottom that control water flow. The most successful repair typically replaces the entire cylinder. #### Instructions Step 1: Remove the Old Cylinder ![Unscrewing the retainer nut.]() Loosen the set screw and remove the handle. Unscrew the retainer nut or mounting screw and pull out the cylinder. Step 2: Install the New Cylinder  Set the new cylinder into place and reassemble the faucet. With the faucet knobs in the on position, slowly turn on the water supply. Too much initial pressure can damage the new hardware. ### Fix a Double-Handled Compression and Reverse-Compression Faucet ![Compression and reverse-compression faucet part.]() In this repair, you’ll replace the washer and O-ring or gasket on the valve stem, as well as the valve seat in the faucet. #### Instructions Step 1: Disassemble the Faucet ![Disassembling the faucet.]() Remove handles or knobs by prying off the temperature indicator cap and removing the screw. Pull the handles off the base. Some handles are removed by backing out a set screw. Step 2: Remove the Valve Stem  Loosen the retaining screw with a wrench and take out the valve stem. On the stem, remove the screw, washer and old O-ring. Step 3: Install New O-Ring  Add plumber’s grease to the stem and install a new O-ring and washer. Replace the screw. Step 4: Replace the Valve Seat  Remove the valve seat with a seat or hex wrench and insert a new one. Turn the faucet knobs on and slowly turn on the water supply. Too much initial pressure can damage the new hardware. ### Fix a Double-Handled Cartridge Faucet Follow these steps to fix a two-handle cartridge faucet. #### Instructions Step 1: Remove the Handle ![Unscrewing the set screw.]() Unscrew the set screw to remove the handle. Remove the retaining clip or nut. Step 2: Replace the Cartridge  Gently pull out the cartridge and replace it with a new one. Step 3: Reassemble Your Faucet Turn the faucet knobs on and slowly turn on the water supply. Too much initial pressure can damage the new hardware. While you have the faucet disassembled, it's a good idea to replace the seats and springs below the cartridge. They're inexpensive and adding new ones should ensure your repair is complete. ## Replacing Double-Handled Faucet Aerators After reassembling your faucet and running the water for a few minutes to clear debris from the new parts, replace the aerator. If your old aerator needs cleaning, soak it in white vinegar to remove buildup and deposits. Rinse it before installation. ## How to Fix a Leaky Single-Handle Faucet Learn to repair three types of single-handle faucets: ball faucets, cartridge faucets and ceramic disc faucets. ## Locate the Leak For all single-handle faucets, start by locating the leak. A leaky spout means damaged parts inside the body. A leak at the base indicates damaged seals around the body. See the standard repair steps below, but always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your faucet. ## Disassemble the Single-Handled Faucet ![Single faucet parts in a sink basin.]() Turn off the water at the shut-off valves. If they’re stuck, shut off the main water valve. Turn on the faucet to relieve remaining pressure and release any water in the line. Close the drain and place a towel in the sink to protect the surface and catch any dropped parts. As you disassemble the old faucet, lay the parts in order on a flat surface and snap a picture for reference. Put the faucet parts in a plastic bag and take them to the store with you when shopping. You may require only one part, but it may be best to buy a kit and replace everything, including a new aerator if yours is damaged. Remove the faucet aerator and inspect it for damage. Use a wrench to remove the cap. For leaky spouts, remove the cam, washer and ball. Use a small screwdriver to remove the seats and springs. Step 2: Replace the O-Rings  To repair leaks at the base, remove the spout and replace the O-rings. Add a little plumber’s grease and replace the spout. Step 3: Replace the Ball Install new seats on new springs. Replace the ball, taking care to line up the holes. Replace the washer and cam. Reassemble the faucet. Turn the handle on. ### Fix a Leaky Single-Handled Cartridge Faucet Many bathroom faucets are made with cartridge components. These instructions will show you how to fix a leaky bathroom faucet. #### Instructions Step 1: Remove the Faucet Parts ![Removing the faucet cap.]() Remove the cap and take out the screw and clip. Take off the handle and trim ring. Step 2: Remove and Replace the Cartridge  Unscrew the retainer nut and pull out the old cartridge. Install a new cartridge. Step 3: Reassemble the Cartridge Faucet  Reassemble the faucet — avoid overtightening — and turn the handle on. ### Fix a Leaky Single-Handled Ceramic Disc Faucet #### Instructions Step 1: Remove the Handle ![Removing the faucet handle.]() Remove the handle and trim ring. Step 2: Remove the Cylinder  Unscrew the retainer nut and pull out the cylinder. Step 3: Install a New Cylinder  Install a new cylinder and reassemble the faucet. Turn the handle on. ## Turn on the Water Supply For all faucet types, once you’ve replaced the parts, turn the water supply valve back on slowly. Too much pressure can damage the new parts. Let the water run freely for a few minutes to flush any debris from the new components. ## Replacing a Single-Handled Faucet Aerator After reassembling your faucet, run the water for a few minutes to clear debris from the new parts. Replace the aerator. If your old aerator needs cleaning, soak it in white vinegar to remove buildup and deposits. In most cases, the cartridge body doesn't have moving parts. The ceramic disc body/cylinder does have moving parts that pivot to open the ports on the bottom. If your kitchen or bathroom sink is leaking, follow these instructions. The repair steps below are standard, but always refer to the manufacturer's instructions for your faucet too. ## Disassemble the Double-Handled Faucet ![A ceramic disc faucet.]() This type of faucet uses a cylinder with tiny discs on the bottom that control water flow. The most successful repair typically replaces the entire cylinder. ![Compression and reverse-compression faucet part.]() In this repair, you’ll replace the washer and O-ring or gasket on the valve stem, as well as the valve seat in the faucet. Follow these steps to fix a two-handle cartridge faucet. ## Replacing Double-Handled Faucet Aerators After reassembling your faucet and running the water for a few minutes to clear debris from the new parts, replace the aerator. If your old aerator needs cleaning, soak it in white vinegar to remove buildup and deposits. Rinse it before installation. ## How to Fix a Leaky Single-Handle Faucet Learn to repair three types of single-handle faucets: ball faucets, cartridge faucets and ceramic disc faucets. ## Locate the Leak For all single-handle faucets, start by locating the leak. A leaky spout means damaged parts inside the body. A leak at the base indicates damaged seals around the body. Many bathroom faucets are made with cartridge components. These instructions will show you how to fix a leaky bathroom faucet. ## Turn on the Water Supply For all faucet types, once you’ve replaced the parts, turn the water supply valve back on slowly. Too much pressure can damage the new parts.
