First, you need to decide what tree you're going to plant. It's a good idea to look for trees that are native to your area. Native trees and plants can perform better with the local soil and climate. They're typically lower maintenance and require less fertilizer, supplemental water and fewer pesticides. They're also beneficial to the local wildlife. Consider how big the tree will get once it's fully grown so you know how far to plant from buildings, fences, landscaping or overhead wires. Also, note if the tree needs lots of sun or shade. All these details can be found on the tag that comes on every tree. Check the tag to figure out if the location is right for the tree you've chosen. Some zoning and neighborhood associations have rules about the types of trees you can plant and where you can plant them. Take right of way and property lines into consideration. Also think about how the tree will fit into your overall landscape. Before beginning any excavation, call 811 to check for underground utilities. ## How to Plant a Tree A good time to plant is in the fall or early spring, so the tree has time to acclimate before the harsh weather of winter or summer. You'll also find a wider selection of trees in the garden center at these times. In warmer climates, trees can be planted in winter. Once you have your trees and locations, it's time to plant. Good to Know If you're planting on a slope, level the planting area to keep all of the roots at the correct depth. #### Instructions Step 1: Dig the Planting Hole ![A person in red Craftsman work gloves loosening the soil around the side of a hole.]() [Dig the hole](https://www.lowes.com/pl/Shovels-spades-Digging-tools-Lawn-garden-hand-tools-Outdoor-tools-equipment-Outdoors/4294612716) for the tree. A good rule of thumb is to dig a hole that's twice the width of the container and just as deep. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole and on the sides. Loosening the soil makes it easier for the roots to embed themselves into the ground. It's a good idea to wet the entire hole to help the roots take hold. Save the soil to backfill once the tree is in place. Step 2: Loosen the Tree Roots  Next, remove the tree from the container. The easiest way to do this is to cut the container on both sides with a [utility knife](https://www.lowes.com/pl/Utility-knives-Cutting-crimping-tools-Hand-tools-Tools/4294857586). Before putting the tree in the ground, rake your fingers across the side of the root ball to loosen it. This breaks the roots from their circular growth pattern and helps ensure strong, healthy root system development. Step 3: Place the Tree in the Planting Hole  Now, slide the tree into the hole. The root or trunk flare — where the roots begin to spread out and the trunk begins to get thicker — should be just above the ground. Once the tree is in the ground, take a step back and confirm that it looks level and isn't leaning to either side. If your tree doesn't stay upright or if you live in an area that gets high winds, you can use [stakes](https://www.lowes.com/pl/plant-care-supplies/plant-stakes-ties/tree-stakes-ties/4294612577 "/pl/plant-care-supplies/plant-stakes-ties/tree-stakes-ties/4294612577") to help it stand up straight, but make sure the lines don't cut into the tree. Wide, smooth fabric straps are a good choice. If you use cord or wire, cushion the trunk; segments cut from a garden hose you're no longer using work well for this. Step 4: Add Soil Back Around the Newly Planted Tree  Backfill the hole with the soil you removed. Trees will typically do better in native soil than amended soil. In most cases, roots that are planted in amended soil rarely spread outside that area and end up circling around the amended area instead. Since you want the tree root system to spread far and wide into the surrounding soil, you'd need to amend a large section of your yard. It's yet another benefit of using native trees, since they're acclimated to the soil in your area and will have no problem growing. As you're backfilling, lightly pack the soil. This will help eliminate air pockets. When the hole is about halfway full, give the ground a healthy dose of water. This will also eliminate air pockets and provides needed moisture to the roots. Add the rest of the soil, making sure the flare isn't covered. Step 5: Mulch the Planting Area  The last step is adding a layer of [mulch](https://www.lowes.com/pl/Mulch-Landscaping-Lawn-garden/4294612789). This will help hold the moisture in and keep the roots nice and cool for a healthy tree. Add at least 2 inches at the base of the tree for good coverage. Once you've got it down, pull it back from the trunk of the tree a few inches so it doesn't contact the trunk. Step 6: Water the Tree  Make sure the tree stays watered well until it's fully established. Some trees can take up to a year to become properly established. To keep your tree watered, you can water by hand, or use a [drip irrigation system](https://www.lowes.com/pl/Drip-irrigation-Irrigation-Lawn-garden/4294612492) with a battery-powered [timer](https://www.lowes.com/pl/Hose-end-water-timers-Irrigation-timers-accessories-Irrigation-Lawn-garden/2508930097). Some fruit trees need shaping and thinning to promote fruiting. As your plant grows, it may need trimming to keep it healthy.
