Lowe’s has water filtration systems and water softeners for every home. Choosing the Right Water Filter The kind of water filtration system that will work best for you depends on a number of factors, including how many people live in your home and what your filtration needs are. A good place to start is to pick up a water test kit that will let you know if there are any harmful materials in your water that make it unsafe to drink or cook with straight from the tap. You’ll also need to ensure you’re picking a water filtration system that can filter a volume of water appropriate for the size of your household. Many under sink filtration systems can purify water for four or more people and can even remove volatile organic chemicals, pesticides and heavy metals. Whole house water filters are best if you’re concerned about large particles of sediment, such as sand or iron. They ensure that all water in your house — from the kitchen tap to the bathtub — meets your filtration specifications. If your water is safe to drink but you’re not a fan of its taste, a countertop filter or faucet mount filter might be the right choice for you. These systems hook up to your sink through a diverter valve or fit directly on the faucet to provide filtered water on demand. Water Softeners Unlike water filtration systems, water softeners won’t remove contaminants and purify unsafe water. Softeners only address water hardness by filtering hardness ions out of the water. A water softener is necessary if you have hard water because it prevents limescale from developing inside your plumbing. It also helps your appliances with water running to them, such as washing machines and dishwashers, last longer. Many water softeners are point-of-entry systems, which means they connect to the mainline and filter the water for your entire home. Water softeners use both resin beads and water softener salt to soften your water. The water softener salt mixes with water to clean the resin container periodically. This removes hardness ions from the beads in a process referred to as regeneration. A water softener typically performs regeneration based on a timer you set as the user or through a demand-initiated regeneration process that monitors how much water has flowed through your softener.
