The most important piece of tyre advice we give drivers though?\nPay attention to tread depth.\nAs your tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, it is crucial that they are in good condition for vehicle, driver, and passenger safety. However, drivers often don’t realise the importance of tread depth and ensuring that it is maintained.\nIn a survey undertaken in 2020, a staggering\n69%\nof drivers questioned were not aware of the\nlegal minimum tyre tread depth\nfor the UK! If you’re included in this percentage, this blog is for you.\nWe’ll not only outline the importance of tread depth and how to avoid a tyre-related fine or penalty points on your licence, but we’ll also provide you with a quick, easy trick to check your tyre tread depth at home — the ‘20p test’.\nTyre tread depth explained\nLet’s begin by getting a better understanding of tyre treads.\nTyre tread refers to\nthe grooves you find on your tyres\n, designed to remove water from the road, enabling your vehicle to better grip the road surface. Without tyre treads, you’d struggle to control your car as it would become very slippery indeed.\nThink Formula 1 cars driving on slick tyres (which have no tyre tread) in the rain – they skid and slide uncontrollably off the track so have to pit quickly to change to intermediate or wet tyres.\nWhy is tyre tread depth so important?\nIf, like so many drivers, you’ve been putting off that tyre change because you can’t find the time or perhaps are downplaying the severity of a bald tyre, here are 3 reasons why tread depth is so important.\n1. Improved stopping distances\nIn the event of an emergency braking manoeuvre, your car relies on your tyre tread to grip the road and come to a stop in the\nshortest possible distance\n.\nBraking distance\nis directly correlated to tyre tread depth so, as your tread wears out, grip decreases and braking distance increases. To make matters worse, your stopping distance will increase still further when driving in wet conditions. Which brings us neatly onto…\n2. Improved aquaplaning resistance\nTyres have to work much harder when\ndriving on wet surfaces\nin order to prevent\naquaplaning\n. Aquaplaning occurs when the water between your tyres and the road surface cannot be displaced quickly enough resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle.\nIf your car begins to aquaplane, you won’t be able to steer or brake until your tyres regain contact with the road. It’s a scary experience but one that can be avoided by checking your tread depth.\nTyre tread doesn’t just help to grip the road, the tread pattern is designed in such a way to remove water from the road surface as you drive. Typically a tyre with adequate tread can displace enough water to\nfill a bucket every 7 seconds\n– that’s a lot of water!\nBut, as your tyre tread becomes worn, so too does its ability to evacuate that water from the road which greatly increases the chances of aquaplaning. The more tread depth you have on your tyres, the more they can clear water from the road surface, and the better grip you’ll achieve. Simple as that.\n3. Illegal tyres could mean costly fines and risk of conviction\nDriving with tyres under the legal tread limit isn’t just a safety risk, it’s against the law. If you are pulled over by the police and your tyre tread is below the legal limit you could be fined up to\n£2,500\nand be landed with\n3 penalty points\non your licence!\nAs an example, according to the Ministry of Justice, more than\n10,000 drivers\nin England & Wales ended up in court in 2012 due to defective tyres. What’s more, if you are convicted of using a vehicle with defective tyres, your insurance premium could go up by as much as\n69%\n.\nCan you really afford to take the risk?\nLow tyre tread depth: Staying road legal\nWhen you\npurchase brand new tyres from Kwik Fit\n, they typically come with\n8mm of tyre tread\n. However, over time (depending on your driving style, the distances you travel, and how often you drive) your tyres’ tread depth will reduce through natural wear and tear. The most important piece of tyre advice we give drivers though?\n\nPay attention to tread depth.\n\nAs your tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, it is crucial that they are in good condition for vehicle, driver, and passenger safety. However, drivers often don’t realise the importance of tread depth and ensuring that it is maintained.\n\nIn a survey undertaken in 2020, a staggering 69% of drivers questioned were not aware of the [legal minimum tyre tread depth](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/tyres\/information\/looking-after-tyres#:~:text=Checking%20Your%20Tread%20Depth) for the UK! If you’re included in this percentage, this blog is for you.\n\nWe’ll not only outline the importance of tread depth and how to avoid a tyre-related fine or penalty points on your licence, but we’ll also provide you with a quick, easy trick to check your tyre tread depth at home — the ‘20p test’.\n\n## Tyre tread depth explained\nLet’s begin by getting a better understanding of tyre treads.\n\nTyre tread refers to [the grooves you find on your tyres](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/blog\/tyre-tread-whats-the-difference-between-asymmetric-and-directional-tyres), designed to remove water from the road, enabling your vehicle to better grip the road surface. Without tyre treads, you’d struggle to control your car as it would become very slippery indeed.\n\nThink Formula 1 cars driving on slick tyres (which have no tyre tread) in the rain – they skid and slide uncontrollably off the track so have to pit quickly to change to intermediate or wet tyres.\n\n## Why is tyre tread depth so important?\nIf, like so many drivers, you’ve been putting off that tyre change because you can’t find the time or perhaps are downplaying the severity of a bald tyre, here are 3 reasons why tread depth is so important.\n\n### 1\\. Improved stopping distances\n![Stopping Distances](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/assets\/kwikfit\/stopping_distances_chart_article.webp)\n\nIn the event of an emergency braking manoeuvre, your car relies on your tyre tread to grip the road and come to a stop in the [shortest possible distance](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/blog\/driver-safety-tyre-safety-stopping-distances).\n\n[Braking distance](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/blog\/what-affects-your-stopping-distance#:~:text=When%20the%20tyres%20reach%20the,distance%20increases%20to%2043%20metres.) is directly correlated to tyre tread depth so, as your tread wears out, grip decreases and braking distance increases. To make matters worse, your stopping distance will increase still further when driving in wet conditions. Which brings us neatly onto…\n\n### 2\\. Improved aquaplaning resistance\nTyres have to work much harder when [driving on wet surfaces](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/blog\/seven-ways-to-stay-safe-in-wet-weather) in order to prevent aquaplaning. Aquaplaning occurs when the water between your tyres and the road surface cannot be displaced quickly enough resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle.\n\nIf your car begins to aquaplane, you won’t be able to steer or brake until your tyres regain contact with the road. It’s a scary experience but one that can be avoided by checking your tread depth.\n\nTyre tread doesn’t just help to grip the road, the tread pattern is designed in such a way to remove water from the road surface as you drive. Typically a tyre with adequate tread can displace enough water to [fill a bucket every 7 seconds](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/blog\/driving-in-heavy-rain) – that’s a lot of water\\!\n\nBut, as your tyre tread becomes worn, so too does its ability to evacuate that water from the road which greatly increases the chances of aquaplaning. The more tread depth you have on your tyres, the more they can clear water from the road surface, and the better grip you’ll achieve. Simple as that.\n\n### 3\\. Illegal tyres could mean costly fines and risk of conviction\nDriving with tyres under the legal tread limit isn’t just a safety risk, it’s against the law. If you are pulled over by the police and your tyre tread is below the legal limit you could be fined up to £2,500 and be landed with 3 penalty points on your licence\\!\n\nAs an example, according to the Ministry of Justice, more than 10,000 drivers in England & Wales ended up in court in 2012 due to defective tyres. What’s more, if you are convicted of using a vehicle with defective tyres, your insurance premium could go up by as much as 69%.\n\nCan you really afford to take the risk?\n\n## Low tyre tread depth: Staying road legal\nWhen you [purchase brand new tyres from Kwik Fit](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/tyres), they typically come with 8mm of tyre tread. However, over time (depending on your driving style, the distances you travel, and how often you drive) your tyres’ tread depth will reduce through natural wear and tear. As it does, so will your tyres’ ability to grip the road surface.\n\nThat’s why tyre experts and leading [premium tyre manufacturer](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/tyres\/manufacturers), [Continental](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/tyres\/manufacturers\/continental), strongly recommend that you replace your tyres before they reach the [UK road legal tyre tread depth minimum of 1.6mm](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/tyres\/information\/uk-tyre-law).\n\nWhy? Because we believe this minimum depth is too low, and, as members of [TyreSafe](https:\/\/www.tyresafe.org\/?gclid=CjwKCAiAz--OBhBIEiwAG1rIOu49JxsgnVR53tcAhtITDql0lsVZZh4ZOknIIwKuYeYUG6vc-PQXZxoCC5oQAvD_BwE) (the UK’s tyre safety charity), we’re continuously campaigning to have this minimum tread depth level increased. Our position is based on the undisputed fact that below 3mm of tread depth, independent testing has conclusively proven that a tyre’s ability to grip the road surface dramatically deteriorates, consequently exposing UK drivers to an increased risk of accidents.\n### Tread Wear Indicators\n![tread wear indicators on a tyre](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/assets\/blog\/20p_test_twi_article.jpg)\n\nSo, exactly how can you stay UK road legal, ensuring that you’re always aware of what your tread depths are? How can you tell when it’s time to replace your tyres?\n\nSome tyre manufacturers, like Continental, have incorporated handy Tread Wear Indicators (TWIs) within their products. These markers are always visible but set below the level of the original 8 mm of tyre tread. Over time, as your tyre incurs natural wear and tear, the tread depth will reduce to the point where it’s level with the TWI. At this point, it’s an easy indication that the tyre should now be changed.\n\nWith Continental’s tyres, there are two sets of TWI – at 3mm (Continental’s recommended depth to change your tyres) and at 1\\.6mm (the UK road legal minimum).\n\nBut what if your tyres don’t have Tread Wear Indicators?\n\n## Introducing the 20p Test\nTWIs are very useful, but there’s an easy way to check your tyre tread depth quickly if you don’t have tyres with this feature: the 20p Test.\n\nThis very simple, yet ingenious, testing method offers UK drivers a handy way of checking their tyre tread depth [weekly or before a long journey](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/tyres\/information\/looking-after-tyres), using just a single 20p coin.\n\nSo, if you don’t have a tread depth gauge we recommend that you keep a 20p coin in your car at all times. That way, you’ll always be able to check your treads whenever you feel the need or are [concerned about your tyres](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/faq\/tyres).\n\n### How to do the 20p test\nUse the very simple steps below to check your tyres:\n\n- Simply place the coin in the main tread channels of your tyres multiple times, at various points around the tyre.\n- If you can see any part of the outer band of the coin face, it means the tyre tread is too shallow – and probably illegal. The most important piece of tyre advice we give drivers though? Pay attention to tread depth. As your tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, it is crucial that they are in good condition for vehicle, driver, and passenger safety. However, drivers often don’t realise the importance of tread depth and ensuring that it is maintained. In a survey undertaken in 2020, a staggering 69% of drivers questioned were not aware of the [legal minimum tyre tread depth](https://www.kwik-fit.com/tyres/information/looking-after-tyres#:~:text=Checking%20Your%20Tread%20Depth) for the UK! If you’re included in this percentage, this blog is for you. We’ll not only outline the importance of tread depth and how to avoid a tyre-related fine or penalty points on your licence, but we’ll also provide you with a quick, easy trick to check your tyre tread depth at home — the ‘20p test’. ## Tyre tread depth explained Let’s begin by getting a better understanding of tyre treads. Tyre tread refers to [the grooves you find on your tyres](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/tyre-tread-whats-the-difference-between-asymmetric-and-directional-tyres), designed to remove water from the road, enabling your vehicle to better grip the road surface. Without tyre treads, you’d struggle to control your car as it would become very slippery indeed. Think Formula 1 cars driving on slick tyres (which have no tyre tread) in the rain – they skid and slide uncontrollably off the track so have to pit quickly to change to intermediate or wet tyres. ## Why is tyre tread depth so important? If, like so many drivers, you’ve been putting off that tyre change because you can’t find the time or perhaps are downplaying the severity of a bald tyre, here are 3 reasons why tread depth is so important. ### 1\. Improved stopping distances ![Stopping Distances](https://www.kwik-fit.com/assets/kwikfit/stopping_distances_chart_article.webp) In the event of an emergency braking manoeuvre, your car relies on your tyre tread to grip the road and come to a stop in the [shortest possible distance](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/driver-safety-tyre-safety-stopping-distances). [Braking distance](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/what-affects-your-stopping-distance#:~:text=When%20the%20tyres%20reach%20the,distance%20increases%20to%2043%20metres.) is directly correlated to tyre tread depth so, as your tread wears out, grip decreases and braking distance increases. To make matters worse, your stopping distance will increase still further when driving in wet conditions. Which brings us neatly onto… ### 2\. Improved aquaplaning resistance Tyres have to work much harder when [driving on wet surfaces](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/seven-ways-to-stay-safe-in-wet-weather) in order to prevent aquaplaning. Aquaplaning occurs when the water between your tyres and the road surface cannot be displaced quickly enough resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle. If your car begins to aquaplane, you won’t be able to steer or brake until your tyres regain contact with the road. It’s a scary experience but one that can be avoided by checking your tread depth. Tyre tread doesn’t just help to grip the road, the tread pattern is designed in such a way to remove water from the road surface as you drive. Typically a tyre with adequate tread can displace enough water to [fill a bucket every 7 seconds](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/driving-in-heavy-rain) – that’s a lot of water\! But, as your tyre tread becomes worn, so too does its ability to evacuate that water from the road which greatly increases the chances of aquaplaning. The more tread depth you have on your tyres, the more they can clear water from the road surface, and the better grip you’ll achieve. Simple as that. ### 3\. Illegal tyres could mean costly fines and risk of conviction Driving with tyres under the legal tread limit isn’t just a safety risk, it’s against the law. If you are pulled over by the police and your tyre tread is below the legal limit you could be fined up to £2,500 and be landed with 3 penalty points on your licence\! As an example, according to the Ministry of Justice, more than 10,000 drivers in England & Wales ended up in court in 2012 due to defective tyres. What’s more, if you are convicted of using a vehicle with defective tyres, your insurance premium could go up by as much as 69%. Can you really afford to take the risk? ## Low tyre tread depth: Staying road legal When you [purchase brand new tyres from Kwik Fit](https://www.kwik-fit.com/tyres), they typically come with 8mm of tyre tread. However, over time (depending on your driving style, the distances you travel, and how often you drive) your tyres’ tread depth will reduce through natural wear and tear. As it does, so will your tyres’ ability to grip the road surface. How can you tell when it’s time to replace your tyres? Some tyre manufacturers, like Continental, have incorporated handy Tread Wear Indicators (TWIs) within their products. These markers are always visible but set below the level of the original 8 mm of tyre tread. Over time, as your tyre incurs natural wear and tear, the tread depth will reduce to the point where it’s level with the TWI. At this point, it’s an easy indication that the tyre should now be changed. With Continental’s tyres, there are two sets of TWI – at 3mm (Continental’s recommended depth to change your tyres) and at 1\.6mm (the UK road legal minimum). But what if your tyres don’t have Tread Wear Indicators? ## Introducing the 20p Test TWIs are very useful, but there’s an easy way to check your tyre tread depth quickly if you don’t have tyres with this feature: the 20p Test. This displays the width of the tyre in millimetres. A tyre marked 225 will measure 225mm across the tread from sidewall to sidewall. ##### Aspect Ratio The fourth and fifth digits of the tyre code that immediately follow the tyre width. The aspect ratio or profile height of the tyre sidewall is expressed as a percentage of the tyre width. So an aspect ratio of 55 for example means that the profile height of the tyre is 55% of its width. ##### Rim Diameter The next two digits represent the size of the wheel rim that the tyre can be fitted to. It is also the diameter of the tyre from bead to bead. So a tyre marked 16 will fit on a 16-inch wheel rim. ##### Speed Rating The speed rating of a tyre is represented by a letter of the alphabet at the end of the tyre size code and indicates the maximum speed capability of the tyre. Tyres receive a speed rating based on a series of tests which measure the tyres capability to handle a set speed for a prolonged period of time. Select your tyre speed rating to find out the maximum speed your tyres can maintain. * Speed Rating Max Speed * If you are unsure what speed rating you need, be sure to check your vehicle handbook. Choosing a lower speed rating than that recommended by your vehicle manufacturer could potentially invalidate your insurance. ##### Load Rating The load index provides information on the maximum weight capability for the tyre. The load index is a numerical code that can be located just after the tyre size marking and before the speed rating. Select your load index to find out the maximum load capability for your tyres. * Load Index Max Load * Although not illegal, it is not advisable to have tyres with a lower speed rating or load index than the manufacturer recommended tyre specification for your vehicle, or to have a combination of different tyre construction types. The most important piece of tyre advice we give drivers though? Pay attention to tread depth. As your tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, it is crucial that they are in good condition for vehicle, driver, and passenger safety. However, drivers often don’t realise the importance of tread depth and ensuring that it is maintained. In a survey undertaken in 2020, a staggering 69% of drivers questioned were not aware of the [legal minimum tyre tread depth](https://www.kwik-fit.com/tyres/information/looking-after-tyres#:~:text=Checking%20Your%20Tread%20Depth) for the UK! If you’re included in this percentage, this blog is for you. We’ll not only outline the importance of tread depth and how to avoid a tyre-related fine or penalty points on your licence, but we’ll also provide you with a quick, easy trick to check your tyre tread depth at home — the ‘20p test’. ## Tyre tread depth explained Let’s begin by getting a better understanding of tyre treads. Tyre tread refers to [the grooves you find on your tyres](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/tyre-tread-whats-the-difference-between-asymmetric-and-directional-tyres), designed to remove water from the road, enabling your vehicle to better grip the road surface. Without tyre treads, you’d struggle to control your car as it would become very slippery indeed. Think Formula 1 cars driving on slick tyres (which have no tyre tread) in the rain – they skid and slide uncontrollably off the track so have to pit quickly to change to intermediate or wet tyres. ## Why is tyre tread depth so important? If, like so many drivers, you’ve been putting off that tyre change because you can’t find the time or perhaps are downplaying the severity of a bald tyre, here are 3 reasons why tread depth is so important. ### 1\. Improved stopping distances ![Stopping Distances](https://www.kwik-fit.com/assets/kwikfit/stopping_distances_chart_article.webp) In the event of an emergency braking manoeuvre, your car relies on your tyre tread to grip the road and come to a stop in the [shortest possible distance](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/driver-safety-tyre-safety-stopping-distances). [Braking distance](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/what-affects-your-stopping-distance#:~:text=When%20the%20tyres%20reach%20the,distance%20increases%20to%2043%20metres.) is directly correlated to tyre tread depth so, as your tread wears out, grip decreases and braking distance increases. To make matters worse, your stopping distance will increase still further when driving in wet conditions. Which brings us neatly onto… ### 2\. Improved aquaplaning resistance Tyres have to work much harder when [driving on wet surfaces](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/seven-ways-to-stay-safe-in-wet-weather) in order to prevent aquaplaning. Aquaplaning occurs when the water between your tyres and the road surface cannot be displaced quickly enough resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle. If your car begins to aquaplane, you won’t be able to steer or brake until your tyres regain contact with the road. It’s a scary experience but one that can be avoided by checking your tread depth. Tyre tread doesn’t just help to grip the road, the tread pattern is designed in such a way to remove water from the road surface as you drive. Typically a tyre with adequate tread can displace enough water to [fill a bucket every 7 seconds](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/driving-in-heavy-rain) – that’s a lot of water\! But, as your tyre tread becomes worn, so too does its ability to evacuate that water from the road which greatly increases the chances of aquaplaning. The more tread depth you have on your tyres, the more they can clear water from the road surface, and the better grip you’ll achieve. Simple as that. ### 3\. Illegal tyres could mean costly fines and risk of conviction Driving with tyres under the legal tread limit isn’t just a safety risk, it’s against the law. If you are pulled over by the police and your tyre tread is below the legal limit you could be fined up to £2,500 and be landed with 3 penalty points on your licence\! As an example, according to the Ministry of Justice, more than 10,000 drivers in England & Wales ended up in court in 2012 due to defective tyres. What’s more, if you are convicted of using a vehicle with defective tyres, your insurance premium could go up by as much as 69%. Can you really afford to take the risk? ## Low tyre tread depth: Staying road legal When you [purchase brand new tyres from Kwik Fit](https://www.kwik-fit.com/tyres), they typically come with 8mm of tyre tread. However, over time (depending on your driving style, the distances you travel, and how often you drive) your tyres’ tread depth will reduce through natural wear and tear. As it does, so will your tyres’ ability to grip the road surface. That’s why tyre experts and leading [premium tyre manufacturer](https://www.kwik-fit.com/tyres/manufacturers), [Continental](https://www.kwik-fit.com/tyres/manufacturers/continental), strongly recommend that you replace your tyres before they reach the [UK road legal tyre tread depth minimum of 1.6mm](https://www.kwik-fit.com/tyres/information/uk-tyre-law). Why? Because we believe this minimum depth is too low, and, as members of [TyreSafe](https://www.tyresafe.org/?gclid=CjwKCAiAz--OBhBIEiwAG1rIOu49JxsgnVR53tcAhtITDql0lsVZZh4ZOknIIwKuYeYUG6vc-PQXZxoCC5oQAvD_BwE) (the UK’s tyre safety charity), we’re continuously campaigning to have this minimum tread depth level increased. Our position is based on the undisputed fact that below 3mm of tread depth, independent testing has conclusively proven that a tyre’s ability to grip the road surface dramatically deteriorates, consequently exposing UK drivers to an increased risk of accidents. Tread Wear Indicators ![tread wear indicators on a tyre](https://www.kwik-fit.com/assets/blog/20p_test_twi_article.jpg) So, exactly how can you stay UK road legal, ensuring that you’re always aware of what your tread depths are? How can you tell when it’s time to replace your tyres? Some tyre manufacturers, like Continental, have incorporated handy Tread Wear Indicators (TWIs) within their products. These markers are always visible but set below the level of the original 8 mm of tyre tread. Over time, as your tyre incurs natural wear and tear, the tread depth will reduce to the point where it’s level with the TWI. At this point, it’s an easy indication that the tyre should now be changed. With Continental’s tyres, there are two sets of TWI – at 3mm (Continental’s recommended depth to change your tyres) and at 1\.6mm (the UK road legal minimum). But what if your tyres don’t have Tread Wear Indicators? ## Introducing the 20p Test TWIs are very useful, but there’s an easy way to check your tyre tread depth quickly if you don’t have tyres with this feature: the 20p Test. This very simple, yet ingenious, testing method offers UK drivers a handy way of checking their tyre tread depth [weekly or before a long journey](https://www.kwik-fit.com/tyres/information/looking-after-tyres), using just a single 20p coin. So, if you don’t have a tread depth gauge we recommend that you keep a 20p coin in your car at all times. That way, you’ll always be able to check your treads whenever you feel the need or are [concerned about your tyres](https://www.kwik-fit.com/faq/tyres). ### How to do the 20p test Use the very simple steps below to check your tyres: - Simply place the coin in the main tread channels of your tyres multiple times, at various points around the tyre. - If you can see any part of the outer band of the coin face, it means the tyre tread is too shallow – and probably illegal.
