Increasing fuel prices over the past few years has meant many drivers have been forced to consider other modes of transport to make essential journeys.\nGone are the days where fuel prices were low, and Diesel was significantly more expensive than unleaded. According to\nthe AA\n, at the moment, fuel prices are higher than previous years, with unleaded prices seeing a rise from 143.5 p\/litre last month to 145.3 p\/litre now, and diesel prices up from 152.5 p\/litre to 153.9 p\/litre, resulting in the price difference between diesel and unleaded shrinking to only 8.6 p\/litre.  This more than ever, means that conserving and making the most of your car’s fuel should be reserved where they can. Although lower fuel prices are preferred, there are plenty of other benefits around reducing the fuel consumption of your vehicle and getting more from a tank.\nHere are our top 8 tips to help improve fuel efficiency.\n1. Check your tyre pressure\nAs tyres typically lose air naturally, at a rate of\nup to 2 PSI every month\n, checking your tyre pressure regularly can help you preserve your fuel for as long as you can. Ensuring the air in your tyres is topped up not only prolongs the life of the tread, but also\nimproves fuel efficiency\n- as there is less rolling resistance with the road.\nIf your tyres are even slightly distorted due to incorrect tyre pressure, you’ll be using more fuel to keep your car running smoothly. This is because of the added friction while driving that comes from a misshapen tyre. You can use our\ntyre pressure tool\nto check the recommended tyre pressure for your car.\n2. Lighten the load\nWeight is a major factor in how much petrol your car uses.\nThe heavier the vehicle, the more fuel will be needed\nto keep it moving. This is especially true when driving in stop-start traffic, something that can be quite common when driving in busy city areas or on motorways.\nIt’s very easy to get into the habit of using your car as a storage space, with golf clubs or the pram sitting in the boot of your car.  However, on average, an extra 50kg of weight in the car will increase fuel consumption by 1-2%. Therefore, it’s best to only carry the essential things you need. So, it might be time to start decluttering your car, and leave those extra items at home if you don’t intend on using them.\n3. Use air con sparingly and re-gas regularly\nIt’s recommended that your\nair-con system is regassed every two years\n. When your air-con refrigerant is low, your car air-conditioning system will start to blow warmer air into the cabin. This, in turn, means your air-con system will work harder to produce cold air, but will still be unable to. This additional effort places greater strain on the vehicle’s engine, and, as a result, your car will be using more fuel.\nAlso, try to avoid excessive use of your air-con when stuck in traffic. Engines have to work harder in stop-start traffic, so using the air-con will only add to this strain and result in more fuel being used. In slow moving traffic, rolling down the windows is a much better choice. Get a wheel alignment check\nCorrect wheel alignment has several benefits, the most important being safety. Having an alignment check annually helps your tyres to wear evenly and last longer, adding up to\n12,000 miles to the life of your tyre\n! Due to the tiniest weight imbalance potentially leading to uneven tyre wear (not to mention a nasty vibration through the steering wheel),\ntyre balancing is essential\nas it ensures the tyre spins evenly around the axle.\nHaving even tyre wear around the circumference of the tyre reduces rolling resistance with the road which, as we already know from tip 1, helps to improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. Service your vehicle regularly\nWe recommend having an\nInterim Service every 6,000 miles\nor 6 months (whichever is sooner) to keep your car safe and roadworthy between full services. Watch your driving style\nYour car isn’t the only factor in improving fuel economy; you have a big part to play as well.\nAdopting bad driving habits\n, such as speeding and excessive acceleration at high revs, will almost certainly affect your fuel consumption. If your vehicle comes with cruise control, using it will help to maintain a constant speed and make the best use of your fuel. Sudden braking will also have a detrimental effect on your MPG so make sure you leave adequate space between yourself and the vehicle in front so you’re not constantly hitting the brake pedal.\n7. Look for the EU Tyre Label\nTyres account for up to\n20% of your car’s fuel consumption\n, so it’s important to choose the right ones. All new tyres purchased in the UK come with an EU Tyre Label, which is there to help you make an informed choice when choosing a new tyre. Tyres are rated in three categories: Fuel Efficiency, Wet Grip and Noise.\nFuel efficiency is rated on a scale from A to F, with an A-rating being the best result possible. These tyres require less energy to roll, and therefore burn less fuel. So, if you want new tyres with good fuel economy, look to the EU Tyre Label for guidance.\n8. Use a fuel system cleaner\nTank-treatment fuel additives\nsuch as BG44K, which can be poured straight into the petrol tank, are an inexpensive way to restore performance and MPG. Deposits can build up in the fuel tank over time, leading to problems including engine surge, stalling and power loss. Increasing fuel prices over the past few years has meant many drivers have been forced to consider other modes of transport to make essential journeys.\n\nGone are the days where fuel prices were low, and Diesel was significantly more expensive than unleaded. According to [the AA](https:\/\/www.theaa.com\/driving-advice\/driving-costs\/fuel-prices), at the moment, fuel prices are higher than previous years, with unleaded prices seeing a rise from 143.5 p\/litre last month to 145.3 p\/litre now, and diesel prices up from 152.5 p\/litre to 153.9 p\/litre, resulting in the price difference between diesel and unleaded shrinking to only 8.6 p\/litre. This more than ever, means that conserving and making the most of your car’s fuel should be reserved where they can. Although lower fuel prices are preferred, there are plenty of other benefits around reducing the fuel consumption of your vehicle and getting more from a tank.\n\nHere are our top 8 tips to help improve fuel efficiency.\n\n### 1\\. Check your tyre pressure\n![Tyre pressure being checked on a vehicle.](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/assets\/kwikfit\/8_ways_to_improve_the_fuel_efficiency_of_your_car_in-line_1.webp)\n\nAs tyres typically lose air naturally, at a rate of [up to 2 PSI every month](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/tyres\/information\/tyre-pressure-search), checking your tyre pressure regularly can help you preserve your fuel for as long as you can. Ensuring the air in your tyres is topped up not only prolongs the life of the tread, but also [improves fuel efficiency](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/blog\/what-should-my-tyre-pressure-be) \\- as there is less rolling resistance with the road.\n\nIf your tyres are even slightly distorted due to incorrect tyre pressure, you’ll be using more fuel to keep your car running smoothly. This is because of the added friction while driving that comes from a misshapen tyre. [The heavier the vehicle, the more fuel will be needed](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/blog\/how-heavy-loads-affect-driving#:~:text=Due%20to%20the%20increased%20acceleration,more%20fuel%20to%20power%20it.) to keep it moving. This is especially true when driving in stop-start traffic, something that can be quite common when driving in busy city areas or on motorways.\n\nIt’s very easy to get into the habit of using your car as a storage space, with golf clubs or the pram sitting in the boot of your car. However, on average, an extra 50kg of weight in the car will increase fuel consumption by 1-2%. Therefore, it’s best to only carry the essential things you need. So, it might be time to start decluttering your car, and leave those extra items at home if you don’t intend on using them.\n\n## 3\\. When your air-con refrigerant is low, your car air-conditioning system will start to blow warmer air into the cabin. This, in turn, means your air-con system will work harder to produce cold air, but will still be unable to. This additional effort places greater strain on the vehicle’s engine, and, as a result, your car will be using more fuel.\n\nAlso, try to avoid excessive use of your air-con when stuck in traffic. Engines have to work harder in stop-start traffic, so using the air-con will only add to this strain and result in more fuel being used. In slow moving traffic, rolling down the windows is a much better choice. Due to the tiniest weight imbalance potentially leading to uneven tyre wear (not to mention a nasty vibration through the steering wheel), [tyre balancing is essential](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/blog\/wheel-balancing-and-wheel-alignment-whats-the-difference#:~:text=Wheel%20balancing%20ensures%20that%20the,side%20the%20scales%20will%20tip.) as it ensures the tyre spins evenly around the axle.\n\nHaving even tyre wear around the circumference of the tyre reduces rolling resistance with the road which, as we already know from tip 1, helps to improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. All new tyres purchased in the UK come with an EU Tyre Label, which is there to help you make an informed choice when choosing a new tyre. Tyres are rated in three categories: Fuel Efficiency, Wet Grip and Noise.\n\nFuel efficiency is rated on a scale from A to F, with an A-rating being the best result possible. These tyres require less energy to roll, and therefore burn less fuel. So, if you want new tyres with good fuel economy, look to the EU Tyre Label for guidance.\n\n## 8\\. Use a fuel system cleaner\n[Tank-treatment fuel additives](https:\/\/www.kwik-fit.com\/other-products\/engine-treatments) such as BG44K, which can be poured straight into the petrol tank, are an inexpensive way to restore performance and MPG. Deposits can build up in the fuel tank over time, leading to problems including engine surge, stalling and power loss. Increasing fuel prices over the past few years has meant many drivers have been forced to consider other modes of transport to make essential journeys. Gone are the days where fuel prices were low, and Diesel was significantly more expensive than unleaded. According to [the AA](https://www.theaa.com/driving-advice/driving-costs/fuel-prices), at the moment, fuel prices are higher than previous years, with unleaded prices seeing a rise from 143.5 p/litre last month to 145.3 p/litre now, and diesel prices up from 152.5 p/litre to 153.9 p/litre, resulting in the price difference between diesel and unleaded shrinking to only 8.6 p/litre. This more than ever, means that conserving and making the most of your car’s fuel should be reserved where they can. Although lower fuel prices are preferred, there are plenty of other benefits around reducing the fuel consumption of your vehicle and getting more from a tank. Here are our top 8 tips to help improve fuel efficiency. ### 1\. Ensuring the air in your tyres is topped up not only prolongs the life of the tread, but also [improves fuel efficiency](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/what-should-my-tyre-pressure-be) \- as there is less rolling resistance with the road. If your tyres are even slightly distorted due to incorrect tyre pressure, you’ll be using more fuel to keep your car running smoothly. This is because of the added friction while driving that comes from a misshapen tyre. [The heavier the vehicle, the more fuel will be needed](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/how-heavy-loads-affect-driving#:~:text=Due%20to%20the%20increased%20acceleration,more%20fuel%20to%20power%20it.) to keep it moving. This is especially true when driving in stop-start traffic, something that can be quite common when driving in busy city areas or on motorways. It’s very easy to get into the habit of using your car as a storage space, with golf clubs or the pram sitting in the boot of your car. However, on average, an extra 50kg of weight in the car will increase fuel consumption by 1-2%. Therefore, it’s best to only carry the essential things you need. So, it might be time to start decluttering your car, and leave those extra items at home if you don’t intend on using them. ## 3\. When your air-con refrigerant is low, your car air-conditioning system will start to blow warmer air into the cabin. This, in turn, means your air-con system will work harder to produce cold air, but will still be unable to. This additional effort places greater strain on the vehicle’s engine, and, as a result, your car will be using more fuel. Also, try to avoid excessive use of your air-con when stuck in traffic. Engines have to work harder in stop-start traffic, so using the air-con will only add to this strain and result in more fuel being used. In slow moving traffic, rolling down the windows is a much better choice. Watch your driving style Your car isn’t the only factor in improving fuel economy; you have a big part to play as well. [Adopting bad driving habits](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/5-driving-habits-you-might-want-to-break), such as speeding and excessive acceleration at high revs, will almost certainly affect your fuel consumption. If your vehicle comes with cruise control, using it will help to maintain a constant speed and make the best use of your fuel. Sudden braking will also have a detrimental effect on your MPG so make sure you leave adequate space between yourself and the vehicle in front so you’re not constantly hitting the brake pedal. ## 7\. All new tyres purchased in the UK come with an EU Tyre Label, which is there to help you make an informed choice when choosing a new tyre. Tyres are rated in three categories: Fuel Efficiency, Wet Grip and Noise. Fuel efficiency is rated on a scale from A to F, with an A-rating being the best result possible. These tyres require less energy to roll, and therefore burn less fuel. So, if you want new tyres with good fuel economy, look to the EU Tyre Label for guidance. ## 8\. Use a fuel system cleaner [Tank-treatment fuel additives](https://www.kwik-fit.com/other-products/engine-treatments) such as BG44K, which can be poured straight into the petrol tank, are an inexpensive way to restore performance and MPG. Deposits can build up in the fuel tank over time, leading to problems including engine surge, stalling and power loss. This displays the width of the tyre in millimetres. A tyre marked 225 will measure 225mm across the tread from sidewall to sidewall. ##### Aspect Ratio The fourth and fifth digits of the tyre code that immediately follow the tyre width. The aspect ratio or profile height of the tyre sidewall is expressed as a percentage of the tyre width. So an aspect ratio of 55 for example means that the profile height of the tyre is 55% of its width. ##### Rim Diameter The next two digits represent the size of the wheel rim that the tyre can be fitted to. It is also the diameter of the tyre from bead to bead. So a tyre marked 16 will fit on a 16-inch wheel rim. ##### Speed Rating The speed rating of a tyre is represented by a letter of the alphabet at the end of the tyre size code and indicates the maximum speed capability of the tyre. Tyres receive a speed rating based on a series of tests which measure the tyres capability to handle a set speed for a prolonged period of time. Select your tyre speed rating to find out the maximum speed your tyres can maintain. * Speed Rating Max Speed * If you are unsure what speed rating you need, be sure to check your vehicle handbook. Choosing a lower speed rating than that recommended by your vehicle manufacturer could potentially invalidate your insurance. ##### Load Rating The load index provides information on the maximum weight capability for the tyre. The load index is a numerical code that can be located just after the tyre size marking and before the speed rating. Select your load index to find out the maximum load capability for your tyres. * Load Index Max Load * Although not illegal, it is not advisable to have tyres with a lower speed rating or load index than the manufacturer recommended tyre specification for your vehicle, or to have a combination of different tyre construction types. Consult your vehicle handbook to confirm your vehicle's tyre speed rating and load index as well as any additional requirements. Increasing fuel prices over the past few years has meant many drivers have been forced to consider other modes of transport to make essential journeys. Gone are the days where fuel prices were low, and Diesel was significantly more expensive than unleaded. According to [the AA](https://www.theaa.com/driving-advice/driving-costs/fuel-prices), at the moment, fuel prices are higher than previous years, with unleaded prices seeing a rise from 143.5 p/litre last month to 145.3 p/litre now, and diesel prices up from 152.5 p/litre to 153.9 p/litre, resulting in the price difference between diesel and unleaded shrinking to only 8.6 p/litre. This more than ever, means that conserving and making the most of your car’s fuel should be reserved where they can. Although lower fuel prices are preferred, there are plenty of other benefits around reducing the fuel consumption of your vehicle and getting more from a tank. Here are our top 8 tips to help improve fuel efficiency. ### 1\. Check your tyre pressure ![Tyre pressure being checked on a vehicle.](https://www.kwik-fit.com/assets/kwikfit/8_ways_to_improve_the_fuel_efficiency_of_your_car_in-line_1.webp) As tyres typically lose air naturally, at a rate of [up to 2 PSI every month](https://www.kwik-fit.com/tyres/information/tyre-pressure-search), checking your tyre pressure regularly can help you preserve your fuel for as long as you can. Ensuring the air in your tyres is topped up not only prolongs the life of the tread, but also [improves fuel efficiency](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/what-should-my-tyre-pressure-be) \- as there is less rolling resistance with the road. If your tyres are even slightly distorted due to incorrect tyre pressure, you’ll be using more fuel to keep your car running smoothly. This is because of the added friction while driving that comes from a misshapen tyre. [The heavier the vehicle, the more fuel will be needed](https://www.kwik-fit.com/blog/how-heavy-loads-affect-driving#:~:text=Due%20to%20the%20increased%20acceleration,more%20fuel%20to%20power%20it.) to keep it moving. This is especially true when driving in stop-start traffic, something that can be quite common when driving in busy city areas or on motorways. It’s very easy to get into the habit of using your car as a storage space, with golf clubs or the pram sitting in the boot of your car. However, on average, an extra 50kg of weight in the car will increase fuel consumption by 1-2%. Therefore, it’s best to only carry the essential things you need. So, it might be time to start decluttering your car, and leave those extra items at home if you don’t intend on using them. ## 3\. When your air-con refrigerant is low, your car air-conditioning system will start to blow warmer air into the cabin. This, in turn, means your air-con system will work harder to produce cold air, but will still be unable to. This additional effort places greater strain on the vehicle’s engine, and, as a result, your car will be using more fuel. Also, try to avoid excessive use of your air-con when stuck in traffic. Engines have to work harder in stop-start traffic, so using the air-con will only add to this strain and result in more fuel being used. Watch your driving style Your car isn’t the only factor in improving fuel economy; you have a big part to play as well. All new tyres purchased in the UK come with an EU Tyre Label, which is there to help you make an informed choice when choosing a new tyre. Tyres are rated in three categories: Fuel Efficiency, Wet Grip and Noise. Fuel efficiency is rated on a scale from A to F, with an A-rating being the best result possible. These tyres require less energy to roll, and therefore burn less fuel. So, if you want new tyres with good fuel economy, look to the EU Tyre Label for guidance. ## 8\. Use a fuel system cleaner [Tank-treatment fuel additives](https://www.kwik-fit.com/other-products/engine-treatments) such as BG44K, which can be poured straight into the petrol tank, are an inexpensive way to restore performance and MPG. Deposits can build up in the fuel tank over time, leading to problems including engine surge, stalling and power loss.
