Dear Nami
Please could you share what it is like celebrating the Lunar New Year in Japan including special customs and cuisines. We know it is a big deal in South-east Asia and China, in Korea too as described by a Korean friend. Thank you.

Hello! Thank you for your question. In Japan, the Lunar New Year isnât celebrated as widely because we follow the Gregorian calendar. Instead, New Year on January 1st is the main holiday, with families enjoying osechi ryori (special dishes with symbolic meanings), mochi, and ozoni soup.
Some regions and communities with Chinese heritage do celebrate the Lunar New Year with special customs and dishes you see in this post. Hope this helps! đž

Can you make some healthy Okinawan favorites and if possible Gluten-free options? Recently have been incorporating monk sugar as my sugar replacement as my friends are getting more health conscious. Would love to hear your thoughts if Japanese recipes can replace healthier ingredients such as almond flour, etc.? Thank you and pls more Taiwanese recipes~ loved this CNY edition : )

Hi Mia, Nami has a few Okinawan recipes on the site. Here are some of the favorites:
<https://www.justonecookbook.com/okinawa-soba/>
<https://www.justonecookbook.com/taco-rice/>
<https://www.justonecookbook.com/goya-champuru/>
And thanks for your request for healthy ingredients and Taiwanese recipes. Namiâs expertise is to share traditional and authentic Japanese recipes. So the focus has always been on Japanese home-cooked food (how they are prepared in Japanese homes). However, you can definitely use healthier substitutions for the recipes whenever they seem fit. Many of our readers have made slight adjustments to Namiâs original recipes with success. In the meantime, Nami will try to include healthy suggestions in future recipes if suitable.
Thanks for your support\!

Nami,
Thank you for posting these recipes for Chinese New Year. I am of Japanese heritage but my daughter married a Chinese American. I am thinking of preparing many of these dishes for my grandkids so they can celebrate the Chinese New Year (we already eat Japanese food for January 1st). Our family is all about food celebrations so I am anxious to try your Chinese New Year recipes\!
Thank you! I love your emails\!

Shouldnât we call it Lunar New Year instead of Chinese New Year? It is celebrated in many parts of Asia. Not just China. Just sayingâŠ.

Hi Susan! Thanks for bringing this up. I do mention Lunar New Year in the post. The reason why I used Chinese New Year in the title because my recipes are of Chinese origin. The menu is definitely more catered to CNY. I know other Asian cultures who celebrate Lunar New Year may have slightly different foods, so CNY would be more accurate in this context. Hope this explains. đ
