Osaka (倧ι˜ͺ, Ōsaka) is Japan's second largest metropolitan area after Tokyo . It has been the economic powerhouse of the Kansai Region for many centuries. Osaka was formerly known as Naniwa. Before the Nara Period , when the capital used to be moved with the reign of each new emperor , Naniwa was once Japan's capital city, the first one ever known. In the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi chose Osaka as the location for his castle , and the city may have become Japan's political capital if Tokugawa Ieyasu had not terminated the Toyotomi lineage after Hideyoshi's death and established his government in distant Edo (Tokyo) . 1 Amusement Park Universal Studio s β€’β€’ Popular theme park at Osaka's waterfront. 4.1 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 969 2 Neighborhood Minami (Namba) β€’β€’ Southern downtown of Osaka. 3.9 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 3,283 3 Zoo/Wildlife Osaka Aquariu m β€’ One of Japan's most impressive aquariums. 4.1 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 1,982 4 Festival Tenjin Matsur i β€’ Popular summer festival with fireworks. 3.9 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 217 5 Castle Osaka Castl e β€’ Reconstruction of the large castle. 3.8 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 3,935 6 Shrine Sumiyoshi Taish a β€’ Head shrine of all Sumiyoshi Shrines. 3.8 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 533 7 Museum Museum of Histor y β€’ Well done museum about the city's history. 3.7 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 372 8 Neighborhood Shinseka i β€’ Nostalgia evoking district around Tsutenkaku. 3.6 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 1,221 9 Temple Shitennoji Templ e β€’ One of the oldest temples in Japan. 3.6 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 851 10 Viewpoint/Tower Abeno Haruka s β€’ Very tall skyscraper with observation deck. 3.6 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 321 11 Neighborhood Kita (Umeda) β€’ Northern downtown of Osaka. 3.5 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 2,630 12 Shopping Osaka Station Cit y β€’ Attractive complex around Osaka Station. 3.3 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 1,515 13 Park Minoo Par k Forested park with waterfall just outside Osaka. 3.9 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 374 14 Traditional Theater Bunraku Theate r Venue for Japanese puppet theater plays. 3.9 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 303 15 Museum National Art Museu m Art exhibitions from Japan and overseas. 3.8 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 279 16 Shopping Kuromon Marke t Popular market street for seafood, produce and more. 3.7 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 122 17 Viewpoint/Tower Umeda Sky Buildin g Skyscraper with observation deck. 3.7 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 1,979 18 Park Osaka Expo 70 Par k Huge, commemorative public park on the former site of Expo 70. 3.5 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 82 19 Neighborhood Tenm a District known for its shrine and shopping arcade. 3.5 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 321 20 Neighborhood Bay Are a New districts built on man-made islands. 3.4 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 1,282 21 Museum Science Museu m Interactive museum about science. 3.4 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 241 22 Neighborhood Tennoj i District around one of Osaka's busiest stations. 3.4 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 624 23 Shopping Grand Front Osak a Shopping complex north of Osaka Station. 3.3 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 325 24 Historic Site Mozu Tomb s Site of Japan's largest ancient tombs. 3.2 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 23 25 Industry/Commerce Asahi Suita Brewer y Beer brewery that offers tours 13 1 Kyot o β€’β€’β€’ For over 1000 years the capital of Japan. 4.8 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 9,799 2 Koyasa n β€’β€’β€’ Atmospheric temple mountain. 4.6 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 1,134 3 Nar a β€’β€’β€’ Japan's first permanent capital. 4.4 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 5,989 4 Kinosak i β€’β€’ Pleasant, old-fashioned hot spring resort. 4.2 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 521 5 Himej i β€’β€’ Site of Japan's most beautiful feudal castle. 4.1 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 3,063 6 Kob e β€’ Harbor city, recovered from 1995 earthquake. 3.8 β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… β˜… 3,649 Japan Brand Collection Leading brands and businesses.
