| Boilerpipe Text | The mixed doubles top seeds Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping were knocked out by an inspired performance from Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch on Day 3 of the YONEX All England.
In the menâs singles, 2024 champion Jonatan Christie and seventh seed Chou Tien Chen departed to leave the race for the title wide open.
There were casualties in the menâs and women's doubles, while the womenâs singles look set to deliver blockbuster match-ups after seeds safely negotiated the second round.
Denmarkâs Vestergaard and Busch had to come from behind to beat the world number ones Feng and Huang in a 74-minute epic.
The pair, who sit 20th in the world, had never beaten the Chinese duo, last losing in three games at the India Open in January.
But in Birmingham, after going behind in the first game, they fought back before scoring four consecutive points on their way to winning the match 18-21 21-18 21-17.
âI am really happy, really shocked as well, but extremely proud,â Busch said.
âWe knew we had to play really good to be able compete with them. We both hoped we could win and we knew that if we played really good that it could be possible.â
Elsewhere in the mixed doubles, Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui narrowly beat Alexander Dunn and Julie MacPherson 21-19 21-19 to continue their title defence.
Meanwhile Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai triumphed 21-15 13-21 21-15 over Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang to make it through.
Jonatan Christie and Chou Tien Chen became the fourth and fifth seeds in the menâs singles to fall on another eventful day.
Christie was beaten 21-19 21-12 by Lin Chun-Yi, while seventh seed Chou Tien Chen lost 21-13 21-19 to Indonesian youngster Alwi Farhan.
Farhan said: âI never imagined this. It was a dream come true to play here all the time.
âToday I was able to control the game from the very beginning so I am very grateful and looking forward to tomorrow.â
Kunlavut Vitidsarn, Christo Popov and Li Shi Feng are the only remaining seeds still in the draw.
It was business as usual in the womenâs singles, as only one player dropped a game en route to the last eight.
An Se Young and Chen Yu Fei both continued to look comfortable, while Pornpawee Chochuwong was made to work for her win over Michelle Li.
Li has been a difficult nut to crack for the Thai eighth seed, but she got the better of her at the Utilita Arena with a 21-16 24-22 win.
Chochuwong said: âThis is my first match that I have played with her and my stamina was not less than her, because for a few months, I havenât played, so this match makes me excited and gives me confidence.â
In the womenâs doubles, almost all the matches went to form as six of the eight seeds secured their places in the quarter-finals.
In the final match of the day, Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspitasari of Indonesia knocked out the sixth seeds Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi of Japan 21-11 18-21 21-17.
The only other non-seeded pair still in are Sayaka Hirota and Ayako Sakuramoto of Japan, as they took down the giant killers, Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva, 21-6 21-17.
Hirota is a former champion, triumphing in 2020 with Yuki Fukushima, who also remains in the draw alongside Mayu Matsumoto.
âI tremendously enjoy playing with âSakuâ - she always has a beautiful, huge smile and a high five, which I really enjoy,â Hirota said. âIâm so pleased to play with her.â
In the menâs doubles, the fifth and eighth seeds said goodbye as Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri were beaten by their compatriots.
Alfian and Fikri had won the first game comfortably before Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin triumphed comfortably, winning 8-21 21-14 21-16.
Eighth seeds Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin also lost to an Indonesian pair as the Malaysians were beaten 23-21 21-16.
Meanwhile, defending champions Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae got past the elder statesmen of the menâs doubles, Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen 21-14 21-16.
As the Danes left, they simply remarked âyou are too good to be trueâ, something the Koreans warmly received.
Seo said: âIâm grateful for them to say that, but we make an effort for that to be reality, what they said and also try and grow as much as we can.â
