A photo of Micheal Martin standing beside Donald Trump at the White House on St Patrick's Day has raised questions about the US president's claimed height. Peter Rubinstein News Reporter 16:49, 18 Mar 2026 Updated 17:57, 19 Mar 2026 A friendly photo between US President Donald Trump and the visiting Taoiseach Micheal Martin on Tuesday may have inadvertently dispelled claims from Trump and the White House of the American president's height. Martin met with Trump on Tuesday to attend the White House's annual Shamrock Bowl presentation , a tradition that symbolises the longstanding diplomatic ties between Ireland and the United States. As part of the day's proceedings, the two appeared at a joint press conference where they discussed Europe's immigration policies, among other issues. But when the two leaders posed together for a photo, it seemed that Martin was at least 2 inches taller than Trump. As Martin's height is listed at 5 feet, 10 inches, the photo appeared to dispel previous claims by the president and White House that Trump is 6 feet, 3 inches. Trump has repeatedly insisted that he is 6 feet, 3 inches tall, which would make him the third tallest president in US history, after Abraham Lincoln and Lyndon B. Johnson (both 6 feet, 4 inches tall). In April of last year, the White House published a partial summary of Trump's physical exam, which also listed his height and weight. The document noted that Trump's height was 75 inches, or 6 feet, 3 inches. If true, it would put him several inches taller than Martin, whose height is listed on some sites as 5 feet, 10 inches. But the photo taken at the White House on Tuesday shows Martin standing visibly above Trump. Trump's health and his own claims about his physical and mental fitness have been the subjects of scrutiny since taking office last January. The 79-year-old president has increasingly exhibited various health issues that are noticeable to the naked eye. He has sported a recurring, dark bruise on the back of his right hand, walked on severely swollen ankles and experienced what appear to be lapses that critics say could be signs of declining mental faculties. But Trump and the White House, in official statements and impromptu interviews alike, have consistently denied that he is exhibiting any signs of compromised health. White House spokespeople often refer our sister site Irish Star to reports from Trump's physician that describe him as being in near-perfect condition. In contrast, a board-certified cardiologist in December expressed alarm over the state of Trump's health, citing several instances in recent weeks in which he appeared to fall asleep during crowded White House meetings, only to suddenly jolt into periods of intense energy. "He's done this several times in the last few weeks. He's fallen asleep in a crowded Oval Office and he's also fallen asleep at Cabinet meetings with people talking directly to him. That's what's called increased daytime somnolence," Dr. Jonathan Reiner told CNN host Jake Tapper during a segment on the president's health. "It's jarring to see the president go from basically asleep in the Oval Office to really this rapid-fire pace during a, basically, 30-minute speech he gave in 18 minutes," Reiner said at the time.
