In a history making Olympic Games, we witnessed a fair share of surprises, but we also saw a continuation of dominance by the top countries on both the men’s and women’s side. Here we break down the medal count for the top countries and a few of the main historic moments from the Tokyo Olympics.    Overall, China and Russia/ROC collected the most medals in gymnastics, 8 each, followed by the United States with six, and Japan with five. By medal count China was the most successful country in the men’s competition, while the U.S. topped the field on the women’s side, both collecting six medals, two of each color. China earned the most gold medals, 3, (rings, parallel bars and balance beam). Russia, Japan and the U.S. all left this Olympics with two gold medals each. On the men’s side, the most golden country was China with two gold medals ( Liu Yang, rings and Zou Jingyuan , parallel bars), while on the women’s side it was the U.S. also with two ( Sunisa Lee , all-around and Jade Carey , floor). Russia/ROC was the most successful country as a team winning both the men’s and the women’s team gold medals, and the only country to win a medal at both the men’s and the women’s team competition. The most successful individual gymnast in Tokyo was Japan’s Daiki Hashimoto who collected three medals, two gold and one silver (gold all-around and high bar and silver team). The most successful female gymnast was Sunisa Lee (USA) who also earned three medals, one of each color. Lee was the all-around champion, and earned a silver with the team and a bronze on uneven bars. Men’s all-around podium: Daiki Hashimoto (JPN), Xiao Ruoteng (CHN) and Nikita Nagornyy (RUS), all three men earned three medals in Tokyo Three other gymnasts also earned three medals in Tokyo. Nikita Nagornyy (RUS/ROC), team gold, bronze all-around and high bar; Xiao Ruoteng (CHN), all-around silver and team and floor bronze; and, Angelina Melnikova (RUS/ROC) team gold and all-around and floor bronze.  The only additional gymnasts to earn multiple medals were Russia’s Denis Ablyazin (team gold, vault silver), Japan’s Kazuma Kaya (team silver, pommel horse bronze), Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade (women’s all-around silver and vault gold) and Simone Biles (USA) team silver and balance beam bronze. The only country to earn two medals on the same event was China who did both with the men and the women.  Liu Yang and You Hao earned the gold and silver on rings, while Guan Chenchen and Tang Xijing earned the same color medals on balance beam. There were a few historic firsts at the Tokyo Olympics. The first Olympic medal in gymnastics for Israel by Artem Dolgopyat who earned the gold on men’s floor exercise. First medal in history for a Brazilian female gymnast by Rebeca Andrade , silver in the all-around. A few days later she earned the first Olympic gold medal for a female gymnast from her country, by winning the vault title. Nina Derwael made history for her country by winning the first medal for a Belgian female gymnast, gold on uneven bars. Other gymnasts who made history in Tokyo by winning the first medal in gymnastics for their country were Lee Chih-kai (TPE) silver on pommel horse, Artur Davtyan (ARM) bronze on men’s vault, Ferhat Arican (TUR) bronze on parallel bars. Yeo Seo-jeong became the first Korean woman to medal in gymnastics at the Olympics by winning the bronze medal on vault. Vanessa Ferrari made history for Italy by winning the first individual medal for her country, silver on floor. The only medal for the Italian women in gymnastics prior to that was a team silver at the 1928 Games. Likewise, Mai Murakami made history for her country by earning the first individual medal for a female gymnast from Japan by winning the bronze on floor exercise. Japan’s sole medal in gymnastics by the women’s program was a team bronze in 1964.   The only person to defend a title from the Rio Olympics was Max Whitlock (GBR), pommel horse. Denis Ablyazin (RUS/ROC) and Simone Biles (USA) were able to duplicate a medal they earned in Rio, Ablyazin silver on men’s vault and Biles a bronze on balance beam. For Ablyazin it was his third consecutive silver medal on vault at the Olympics. By winning two medals in Tokyo both Ablyazin and Biles collected their 7 th Olympic medal overall, the most of anyone else in the field that competed in Tokyo. In total there were 13 countries to leave the Tokyo Olympics with a medal in gymnastics, 12 from the men’s competitions, while 9 different nations medaled in the women’s events.
