“Father, Son, and House of Gucci”: Has Lady Gaga ever uttered more iconic words? The star-studded trailer for Ridley Scott ‘s “ House of Gucci ,” in theaters November 24, promises plenty of greed, deception, and of course, murder. But audiences were also left to unravel the real-life mystery surrounding the fashionable family. The film already is being eyed for awards season buzz as Adam Driver and Gaga seem to be a match made in Academy Award heaven coming off respective critically acclaimed films “Marriage Story” and “ A Star Is Born ,” and coupled with performances by an unrecognizable Jared Leto , Al Pacino , and Jeremy Irons, all Oscar winners. Golden Globe award-winning star Salma Hayek rounds out the cast, alongside Camille Cottin, Jack Huston, and Reeve Carney. Based on the book by Sarah Gay Gorden, “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed,” the film follows Patrizia Reggiani (Gaga) who was convicted of arranging the assassination of her ex-husband and former head of the Gucci fashion house, Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver). Roberto Bentivegna wrote the script, with Scott directing and producing. Underneath the lush furs, infamous Gucci prints, and thick faux Italian accents, “House of Gucci” presents two mysteries: the motive behind Reggiani’s crime, and what actually happened in real life. The crime biopic has already been deemed a “kitschy, funny, tragic tragedy, like a high-end soap opera” from cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, as he described in April . First look photos from the film incited a debate from Patrizia Gucci, the great-granddaughter of house founder Guccio Gucci, over the accuracy of the project. “We are truly disappointed. I speak on behalf of the family,” Gucci said. “They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system,” Gucci stated to the Associated Press. “Our family has an identity, privacy. We can talk about everything. But there is a borderline that cannot be crossed.” Director/producer Scott made “House of Gucci” with the cooperation of the Gucci fashion house, which the Gucci family sold in 1993. The brand allowed Scott’s production to access its wardrobe archives for costume designs and props. So, while the fashion may be accurate, what is the true story behind the Gucci drama? Find out the true story behind each A-list actor’s character as we unravel the murderous story behind “House of Gucci.” Photo : Everett Collection It’s Based on a True Romance with a Twisted Ending Sex, lies, and scandal. Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) wed Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), heir to fashion empire Gucci, in 1973 after meeting at a party in Milan. Patrizia rose to fame as an Italian socialite, while Maurizio climbed the ranks in the couture company his grandfather founded. The couple had two daughters, Alessandra and Allegra Gucci. Yet, Maurizio’s father Rodolfo Gucci (Jeremy Irons) always disapproved of their union, and after more than a decade together, Maurizio left Patrizia for a younger woman, Paola Franchi (Camille Cottin). Their divorce was drawn out over six years, during which Patrizia learned she had a brain tumor. Meanwhile, Maurizio inherited a 50% stake in the Gucci fashion house following the death of his father, and pushed out family board members to eventually sell the company in 1993. “I was angry with Maurizio about many, many things at that time,” Patrizia reflected to The Guardian in 2016. “But above all, this. Losing the family business. It was stupid. It was a failure. I was filled with rage, but there was nothing I could do. He shouldn’t have done that to me.” Maurizio was shot to death two years later, and by 1998, Reggiani was sentenced for hiring a hit man to murder her ex-husband. Photo : MGM Lady Gaga Plays “Black Widow” Patrizia Reggiani Patrizia Reggiani was dubbed the “Black Widow” during her trial. By 1998, she was convicted of arranging the murder of the father of her children and hiring a team of assassins for $375,000. Patrizia was sentenced to 29 years in prison. While she has maintained her innocence, Patrizia reportedly attempted suicide in November 2000 after being transferred to the Opera prison on the outskirts of Milan. The former Gucci heiress was released in 2016, and legally proved she was entitled to a $1.2 million annual allowance from the Gucci estate, plus back payments from the 17 years she was in prison, as stated in her divorce agreement. Patrizia explained that she is “not guilty” but also “not innocent” during a 2018 interview. “All of the things that happened were a misunderstanding,” she said during the “People Magazine Investigates: Crimes of Fashion” series.  After film “House of Gucci” was announced, Patrizia slammed the adaptation , telling Italian news agency Ansa via The Independent that she was irritated by the casting. “I am rather annoyed at the fact that Lady Gaga is playing me in the new Ridley Scott film without having had the consideration and sensibility to come and meet me,” Patrizia dished. “It is not an economic question. I won’t get a cent from the film. It is a question of good sense and respect.” Photo : MGM Adam Driver Portrays Deceased Gucci Grandson Maurizio Gucci Maurizio Gucci was poised to take over his grandfather Guccio Gucci’s fashion empire, but Maurizio opted instead to unload the family business, unleashing deadly resentment from ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani.  Even though the couple didn’t divorce until 1991, their marriage was over after Maurizio walked out on Patrizia in 1985, telling her he was going on a business trip that he never returned from. Instead, he moved in with mistress Paola Franchi.  Following his father’s death, Maurizio was the largest Gucci family shareholder with 50% of the company; yet, his shares were frozen by the Italian government after Maurizio was sued by his family, alleging Maurizio forged his father’s signatures to seize control of the fashion house. Eventually, Maurizio sold his shares in 1993, fully cutting ties between the Gucci family and their namesake brand.  On March 27, 1995, Maurizio was shot four times on his way to work in Milan. He died on the scene at age 46.  Photo : MGM Jeremy Irons Stars as Patriarch Rodolfo Gucci Jeremy Irons takes on the role of Gucci patriarch Rodolfo Gucci, Maurizio’s father. Rodolfo was the youngest of founder Guccio Gucci’s five sons, and although he had a sister Grimalda Gucci, the family fortune was constructed so only male heirs owned part of the Gucci name. Rodolfo worked as an actor under the stage name Maurizio D’Ancora until his father’s death forced him to return to the family business. Rodolfo was wed to actress Sandra Ravel in 1944, and his biggest design contribution to the Gucci house was creating the Flora print scarf made famous by Grace Kelly.  Maurizio was Rodolfo’s only child, and thus when he died in 1983, Maurizio inherited his full stake to the fashion company. Photo : MGM Al Pacino Tops off the Gucci Family Tree as Aldo Gucci The eldest biological son of Guccio Gucci, Aldo Gucci is known for expanding the Italian brand to international markets, namely establishing a presence in New York during the 1950s. A consummate family man, Aldo was passionate that the Gucci name oversaw all of the fashion house operations. Eventually, Aldo and Rodolfo Gucci assumed 50-50 ownership of Gucci after the death of their other brother; however, Aldo and Rodolfo never saw eye to eye about business practices, given Rodolfo seemingly abandoned the family to pursue an acting career. Through legally-ambiguous subsidary arrangements, Aldo attempted to retain control, but by 1986, he was sentenced to a year in prison for tax evasion after his son Paolo Gucci flagged the questionable business practices to the Internal Revenue Service. Aldo died in 1990 at the age of 84. His granddaughter, another Patrizia Gucci (as you can tell, the family is a fan of the name), complained in April 2021 that Al Pacino bore no resemblance to Aldo. “My grandfather was a very handsome man, like all the Guccis, and very tall, blue eyes and very elegant,” Patrizia told The Associated Press . “He is being played by Al Pacino, who is not very tall already, and this photo shows him as fat, short, with sideburns, really ugly. Shameful, because he doesn’t resemble him at all.” Photo : United Artists Releasing Jared Leto Transforms into Chief Designer Paolo Gucci Aldo Gucci’s son Paolo Gucci worked as the chief fashion designer for the brand throughout the 1960s, before being named Vice President of Marketing for the American branch of the conglomerate in 1978. Just two years later, Paolo was fired and attempted to sue to use the Gucci name for a new eponymous line. He later threatened legal action against his father, brothers, uncle Rodolfo, and cousin Maurizio for breach of contract, emotional distress, and assault during a board meeting. To say Paolo was the black sheep of the chic family is an understatement. Paolo filed for bankruptcy in 1994 and was imprisoned the same year for failing to pay child support. He died in 1995 at the age of 64 due to complications from chronic hepatitis.  Yet, great-niece Patrizia Gucci believed Paolo’s legacy was tarnished by Jared Leto’s “Houe of Gucci” styling with “unkempt hair and a lilac corduroy suit” in the trailer. “Horrible, horrible,” Patrizia vented to The Associated Press. “I still feel offended.” Photo : Vianney Le Caer/Invision/AP Camille Cottin Is the “Other Woman” Paola Franchi Paola Franchi was living with Maurizio Gucci for five years leading up to his death. The interior designer left her previous husband for a fiery affair with the Gucci heir, and claimed that Maurizio’s ex Patrizia Reggiani was “stalking” her and threatened to kill the couple.  “I begged him to hire a bodyguard, but he refused,” Paola recalled to The Guardian in 2016. “He didn’t believe Patrizia would go through with her threat because of their girls.” Only one day after Maurizio was murdered, Patrizia allegedly sent Paola an eviction notice to move out of the Gucci-owned apartment where Paola had been living with her eleven-year-old son Charly and Maurizio. Charly later committed suicide at age 16. Photo : Sipa USA via AP Salma Hayek Stuns as Fortune Teller Confidante Giuseppina “Pina” Auriemma No one needs a crystal ball to know a murder-for-hire plot will end poorly. However, Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) was reliant on rumored clairvoyant medium Guiseppina “Pina” Auriemma, who became entangled in the drama surrounding Maurizio Gucci. Pina and Patrizia lived together beginning in 1994, as Pina helped Patrizia pen her memoirs. Pina admitted to authorities that Patrizia hired a hit man to assassinate Maurizio, while Patrizia maintained Pina made the arrangements and then blackmailed her to pay $375,000 for the murder.  Pina was also convicted alongside Patrizia, and was released from prison in 2010.

![Al Pacino in "House of Gucci"](https://www.indiewire.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/HouseOfGucci_CharacterPoster_AlPacino-TW.jpg?w=800) Photo : MGM ## Al Pacino Tops off the Gucci Family Tree as Aldo Gucci The eldest biological son of Guccio Gucci, Aldo Gucci is known for expanding the Italian brand to international markets, namely establishing a presence in New York during the 1950s. His granddaughter, *another* Patrizia Gucci (as you can tell, the family is a fan of the name), complained in April 2021 that Al Pacino bore no resemblance to Aldo. “My grandfather was a very handsome man, like all the Guccis, and very tall, blue eyes and very elegant,” Patrizia told [The Associated Press](https://apnews.com/article/gucci-heirs-worry-depiction-ridley-scott-film-929388bfb17bede59522c188370b75fd). “He is being played by Al Pacino, who is not very tall already, and this photo shows him as fat, short, with sideburns, really ugly. Shameful, because he doesn’t resemble him at all.” ![Jared Leto, “House of Gucci”](https://www.indiewire.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/jared-leto-gucci.png?w=800) Photo : United Artists Releasing ## Jared Leto Transforms into Chief Designer Paolo Gucci Aldo Gucci’s son Paolo Gucci worked as the chief fashion designer for the brand throughout the 1960s, before being named Vice President of Marketing for the American branch of the conglomerate in 1978. “I still feel offended.” ![Camille Cottin poses for photographers upon arrival at the premiere of the film 'France' at the 74th international film festival, Cannes, southern France, Thursday, July 15, 2021. ![Salma Hayek at the Kering Women In Motion Awards during the 74th Festival de Cannes - Cannes Film Festival on the Place de la Castre in Cannes, France, 11 July 2021. \*\*\* Local Caption \*\*\* (Photo by ddp images/Sipa USA)(Sipa via AP Images)](https://www.indiewire.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/AP21193436287835.jpg?w=800) Photo : Sipa USA via AP ## Salma Hayek Stuns as Fortune Teller Confidante Giuseppina “Pina” Auriemma No one needs a crystal ball to know a murder-for-hire plot will end poorly. Pina admitted to authorities that Patrizia hired a hit man to assassinate Maurizio, while Patrizia maintained Pina made the arrangements and then blackmailed her to pay \$375,000 for the murder. Pina was also convicted alongside Patrizia, and was released from prison in 2010. Read More: Daily Headlines Daily Headlines covering Film, TV and more. “Father, Son, and House of Gucci”: Has [Lady Gaga](https://www.indiewire.com/t/lady-gaga/) ever uttered more iconic words? The star-studded [trailer](https://www.indiewire.com/2021/07/house-of-gucci-trailer-lady-gaga-adam-driver-1234654300/) for [Ridley Scott](https://www.indiewire.com/t/ridley-scott/)‘s “[House of Gucci](https://www.indiewire.com/t/house-of-gucci/)*,”* in theaters November 24, promises plenty of greed, deception, and of course, murder. But audiences were also left to unravel the real-life mystery surrounding the fashionable family. The film already is being eyed for [awards season buzz](https://www.indiewire.com/gallery/house-of-gucci-release-date-cast-details/) as [Adam Driver](https://www.indiewire.com/t/adam-driver/) and Gaga seem to be a match made in Academy Award heaven coming off respective critically acclaimed films “Marriage Story” and “[A Star Is Born](https://www.indiewire.com/2018/08/a-star-is-born-review-lady-gaga-bradley-cooper-venice-1201997262/),” and coupled with performances by an [unrecognizable](https://www.indiewire.com/gallery/house-of-gucci-posters-jared-leto-transformation/) [Jared Leto](https://www.indiewire.com/2021/01/jared-leto-the-little-things-interview-1234611541/), [Al Pacino](https://www.indiewire.com/t/al-pacino/), and Jeremy Irons, all Oscar winners. Golden Globe award-winning star [Salma Hayek](https://www.indiewire.com/t/salma-hayek/) rounds out the cast, alongside Camille Cottin, Jack Huston, and Reeve Carney. Based on the book by Sarah Gay Gorden, “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed,” the film follows Patrizia Reggiani (Gaga) who was [convicted of arranging the assassination](https://www.indiewire.com/gallery/house-of-gucci-release-date-cast-details/) of her ex-husband and former head of the Gucci fashion house, Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver). Roberto Bentivegna wrote the script, with Scott directing and producing. Underneath the lush furs, infamous Gucci prints, and thick faux Italian accents, “House of Gucci” presents two mysteries: the motive behind Reggiani’s crime, and what actually happened in real life. The crime biopic has already been deemed a “kitschy, funny, tragic tragedy, like a high-end soap opera” from cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, as he [described in April](https://www.indiewire.com/2021/04/house-of-gucci-ridley-scott-dp-1234627827/). [First look photos](https://www.indiewire.com/gallery/house-of-gucci-posters-jared-leto-transformation/) from the film incited a debate from Patrizia Gucci, the great-granddaughter of house founder Guccio Gucci, over the accuracy of the project. “We are truly disappointed. I speak on behalf of the family,” Gucci said. “They are stealing the identity of a family to make a profit, to increase the income of the Hollywood system,” Gucci stated to [the Associated Press.](https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-lady-gaga-adam-driver-ridley-scott-crime-929388bfb17bede59522c188370b75fd) “Our family has an identity, privacy. Find out the true story behind each A-list actor’s character as we unravel the murderous story behind “House of Gucci.” Photo : Everett Collection ## It’s Based on a True Romance with a Twisted Ending Sex, lies, and scandal. “I was angry with Maurizio about many, many things at that time,” Patrizia reflected to [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2016/jul/24/the-gucci-wife-and-the-hitman-fashions-darkest-tale) in 2016. Photo : MGM ## Lady Gaga Plays “Black Widow” Patrizia Reggiani Patrizia Reggiani was dubbed the “Black Widow” during her trial. By 1998, she was convicted of arranging the murder of the father of her children and hiring a team of assassins for \$375,000. Patrizia was sentenced to 29 years in prison. While she has maintained her innocence, Patrizia reportedly attempted suicide in November 2000 after being transferred to the Opera prison on the outskirts of Milan. The former Gucci heiress was released in 2016, and legally proved she was entitled to a \$1.2 million annual allowance from the Gucci estate, plus back payments from the 17 years she was in prison, as stated in her divorce agreement. Patrizia explained that she is “not guilty” but also “not innocent” during a 2018 interview. “All of the things that happened were a misunderstanding,” she said during the “People Magazine Investigates: Crimes of Fashion” series. After film “House of Gucci” was announced, Patrizia [slammed the adaptation](https://www.indiewire.com/2021/03/house-of-gucci-heiress-slams-lady-gaga-not-meeting-before-filming-1234623161/), telling Italian news agency [Ansa](https://www.ansa.it/english/news/lifestyle/arts/2021/03/11/gucci-black-widow-miffed-by-lady-gaga-snub_3a95687b-2439-4fdb-8945-b19d3c067992.html) via [The Independent](https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/house-of-gucci-lady-gaga-patrizia-reggiani-b1816362.html) that she was irritated by the casting. “I am rather annoyed at the fact that Lady Gaga is playing me in the new Ridley Scott film without having had the consideration and sensibility to come and meet me,” Patrizia dished. “It is not an economic question. I won’t get a cent from the film. It is a question of good sense and respect.” Photo : MGM ## Adam Driver Portrays Deceased Gucci Grandson Maurizio Gucci Maurizio Gucci was poised to take over his grandfather Guccio Gucci’s fashion empire, but Maurizio opted instead to unload the family business, unleashing deadly resentment from ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani. Photo : MGM ## Jeremy Irons Stars as Patriarch Rodolfo Gucci Jeremy Irons takes on the role of Gucci patriarch Rodolfo Gucci, Maurizio’s father. Shameful, because he doesn’t resemble him at all.” Photo : United Artists Releasing ## Jared Leto Transforms into Chief Designer Paolo Gucci Aldo Gucci’s son Paolo Gucci worked as the chief fashion designer for the brand throughout the 1960s, before being named Vice President of Marketing for the American branch of the conglomerate in 1978. “I still feel offended.” Photo : Vianney Le Caer/Invision/AP ## Camille Cottin Is the “Other Woman” Paola Franchi Paola Franchi was living with Maurizio Gucci for five years leading up to his death.
