Streaming used to be a cost-effective way to view a lot of great content. When
Netflix was really the only show in town
, you could find most of the things you wanted to watch on there and didn't have to pay a fortune to do so.
Sadly, the streaming wars arrived, and suddenly every studio under the sun had its own streaming service. I did the math recently and worked out that if I wanted to sign up to Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, Prime Video, Hulu, Max, Paramount+, and Peacock, it would cost as much as $1600 per year, which is an insane amount of money.
What's worse is that streaming services
continue to increase their prices
at the same time as showing ads on their services, which is the worst of both worlds. Even rotating streaming services so that you're only subscribed to one or two at any one time is becoming expensive now. It finally pushed me to take a look at the free content on my LG TV.

There are plenty of
apps that I can install
on my LG TV if I want to watch free content. I already know about
apps such as Tubi and Plex
that offer free shows and movies, and I've taken a look at their content before.
What I've never done before is look at what LG itself is offering. Many LG TVs give you access to the LG Channels feature, which is supported by ads and
free to use
and allows you to stream shows and movies through your smart TV.
There are often promos on my TV displaying shows and movies that are available on LG Channels, but I've always ignored them in the past. With so much content on streaming services, I didn't have the time to start watching ad-supported LG content, too.
After yet another email about an upcoming price increase for one of my streaming subscriptions (
Disney+, I'm looking at you
), I decided that maybe it was time to take a look at what free content was actually on offer in LG Channels.
There's a lot more free content than I expected
It's not all great, but some of it is
Credit:Â Adam Davidson / How-To Geek
LG Channels has a fairly minimal user interface, in the style of a traditional TV channel listing. You can scroll through the live channels and select something you want to watch, just like watching any
live TV service
.
There were many shows and movies that definitely wouldn't be considered high-quality, and the ads are a little frustrating, but there's enough good content that I haven't yet run out of things to watch.
I found a lot of stuff to like, including kids' cartoons such as
Sonic X
and
Super Mario World
that I couldn't help but watch, and I even got sucked into watching billiards for a while. There's a channel devoted to the 1970s TV show
The Incredible Hulk
, which my kids really loved. The content can vary by region and may change quickly, so your mileage may vary.
While
most content is live
, so you can't pause or restart it, there are some on-demand shows and movies, too. I found some genuinely excellent movies, including the brilliant
An American Werewolf in London
, as well as shows such as
The IT Crowd
that I could watch on demand. There's also the Space Live channel that shows live feeds of Earth from the ISS and satellites, which I watched for far too long.
There were a lot of shows and movies that definitely wouldn't be considered high-quality, and the ads are a little frustrating, but there's enough good content that I haven't yet run out of things to watch.
The user experience also isn't perfect; trying to fast-forward through a movie was painful. That's not really the point, though; the main focus is on live channels that you just sit back and watch.
It won't replace Netflix, but that isn't the point
Live content is great when you don't want to choose

I'm not planning on canceling all my streaming subscriptions and only ever watching LG Channels from now on, but that's not really the point. The service isn't a replacement for streaming services, but it can be a really good complement to them.
Sometimes, trying to choose
what to watch next
on all the different streamers feels like a full-time job. There's something refreshing about flicking through the different live channels and landing on something great completely by chance. It almost felt like a relief.
While I won't be
canceling Netflix
just yet, I'm definitely going to keep watching some of the shows I've discovered or rediscovered on LG Channels. There's a channel showing non-stop
Seinfeld
that's got my name all over it.

Every time I access the streaming apps on my smart TV, I see information about LG's own streaming content. Until now, I've completely ignored these shows and movies, but I finally decided to see what was available, and I was pleasantly surprised.

## Streaming services are getting out of hand
### Watching them all costs a small fortune

Streaming used to be a cost-effective way to view a lot of great content. When [Netflix was really the only show in town](https://www.howtogeek.com/netflix-isnt-the-best-streaming-service-anymore/), you could find most of the things you wanted to watch on there and didn't have to pay a fortune to do so.
Sadly, the streaming wars arrived, and suddenly every studio under the sun had its own streaming service. I did the math recently and worked out that if I wanted to sign up to Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, Prime Video, Hulu, Max, Paramount+, and Peacock, it would cost as much as \$1600 per year, which is an insane amount of money.
What's worse is that streaming services [continue to increase their prices](http://www.howtogeek.com/every-streaming-service-price-hikes-in-2026-so-far/) at the same time as showing ads on their services, which is the worst of both worlds. Even rotating streaming services so that you're only subscribed to one or two at any one time is becoming expensive now. It finally pushed me to take a look at the free content on my LG TV.

**Subscription with ads**Yes, \$8/month
**Simultaneous streams**Two or four
Stream licensed and original programming with a monthly Netflix subscription.
**Live TV**No
**Price**Starting at \$8/month
## I'd always ignored the free LG content promoted on my TV

There are plenty of [apps that I can install](https://www.howtogeek.com/reasons-to-avoid-smart-tv-apps/) on my LG TV if I want to watch free content. I already know about [apps such as Tubi and Plex](https://www.howtogeek.com/the-best-free-streaming-services/) that offer free shows and movies, and I've taken a look at their content before.
What I've never done before is look at what LG itself is offering. Many LG TVs give you access to the LG Channels feature, which is supported by ads and [free to use](https://www.howtogeek.com/one-year-in-what-i-love-and-hate-about-free-ad-supported-tv-platforms/) and allows you to stream shows and movies through your smart TV.
There are often promos on my TV displaying shows and movies that are available on LG Channels, but I've always ignored them in the past. With so much content on streaming services, I didn't have the time to start watching ad-supported LG content, too.
After yet another email about an upcoming price increase for one of my streaming subscriptions ([Disney+, I'm looking at you](https://www.howtogeek.com/820651/how-much-does-disney-plus-cost/)), I decided that maybe it was time to take a look at what free content was actually on offer in LG Channels.
## There's a lot more free content than I expected

LG Channels has a fairly minimal user interface, in the style of a traditional TV channel listing. You can scroll through the live channels and select something you want to watch, just like watching any [live TV service](https://www.howtogeek.com/781520/best-live-tv-streaming-service/).
There were many shows and movies that definitely wouldn't be considered high-quality, and the ads are a little frustrating, but there's enough good content that I haven't yet run out of things to watch.
I found a lot of stuff to like, including kids' cartoons such as *Sonic X* and *Super Mario World* that I couldn't help but watch, and I even got sucked into watching billiards for a while. There's a channel devoted to the 1970s TV show *The Incredible Hulk*, which my kids really loved. The content can vary by region and may change quickly, so your mileage may vary.
While [most content is live](https://www.howtogeek.com/158934/fast-is-the-latest-trend-in-streaming-tv-but-what-is-it/), so you can't pause or restart it, there are some on-demand shows and movies, too. I found some genuinely excellent movies, including the brilliant *An American Werewolf in London*, as well as shows such as [*The IT Crowd*](https://www.howtogeek.com/episodes-of-the-it-crowd-that-take-me-back-to-life-before-smartphones/) that I could watch on demand.
## It won't replace Netflix, but that isn't the point
### Live content is great when you don't want to choose

I'm not planning on canceling all my streaming subscriptions and only ever watching LG Channels from now on, but that's not really the point. The service isn't a replacement for streaming services, but it can be a really good complement to them.
Sometimes, trying to choose [what to watch next](https://www.howtogeek.com/netflix-shows-weekend-watch-march-13/) on all the different streamers feels like a full-time job. There's something refreshing about flicking through the different live channels and landing on something great completely by chance. It almost felt like a relief.
While I won't be [canceling Netflix](https://www.howtogeek.com/662944/how-to-cancel-your-netflix-subscription/) just yet, I'm definitely going to keep watching some of the shows I've discovered or rediscovered on LG Channels. There's a channel showing non-stop [*Seinfeld*](https://www.howtogeek.com/watch-these-episodes-to-get-hooked-on-seinfeld/) that's got my name all over it.

LG C4
**Brand**LG

### It's worth seeing what your smart TV can offer
If you don't have an LG TV, you won't get LG Channels, but many other manufacturers offer similar services. They're definitely worth checking out; you may find that shows or movies you really love are lurking inside your TV. Now I'm off to watch *The Six Million Dollar Man*. |
