Attendees of the Houston Livestock and Rodeo walk by a large cowboy boot near NRG Stadium in Houston on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. Elizabeth Conley/Houston Chronicle You’re going to the Houston Rodeo but you don’t want to blow your budget. What’s a cowboy or cowgirl to do?  Though you will have already spent $25 for an adult ticket to the fairgrounds (or more for a rodeo or concert ticket), you can keep your additional spending to a minimum with a little bit of strategizing.  Here are seven ways to keep your expenses low as you navigate the Houston Rodeo. Article continues below this ad 1. Take public transit If you’re anywhere near the MetroRail Red Line, you can take the light rail to the Stadium Park/Astrodome station, which is walkable to NRG Park. If you live nearer to the Green or Purple lines, you can transfer to the Red Line at Central Station Main. You’ll pay $1.25 each way to take the MetroRail, and avoid paying $25 to park in official lots near the stadium, which also fill up quickly.  2. Bring a water bottle With temperatures in the 80s and little shade on the fairgrounds, hydration is a must. But water costs $5 at most rodeo food vendors. Save by bringing your own; you’ll find water fountains inside NRG Center.  Article continues below this ad 3. Shop around for your meal Take a lap around the rodeo’s food vendor area and compare prices before putting in your order. Prices for similar items can range by a few dollars, and if you do some digging, you can find reasonably-priced entrees among the marked-up festival food. We found a $6 hot dog at Tad’s Bodacious Burritos and a $7.95 grilled cheese sandwich at Paradise Burgers.  4. Keep track of your carnival tickets To play games or go on rides at the carnival, you’ll need to buy tickets, which cost $1.25 each (4 for $5, 16 for $20, or 40 for $50). With most games and rides priced at at least six a pop, your tickets can go fast — especially since you’ll actually be paying with a QR code on a paper card.  Houston Chronicle Logo Make us a Preferred Source on Google to see more of us when you search. Add Preferred Source A good rule of thumb is to think of each ticket as a little more than a dollar. That second crack at the ring toss? It’ll cost you a bit more than $6 — $7.50 to be exact. Article continues below this ad 5. Spend some quality time at the agriculture fair One way to avoid spending money is to spend more time in places where nothing’s for sale. At Agventure, in Hall A of NRG Center, you’ll find livestock like long-horned cattle, just-hatched chicks and adorable piglets. It’s a great way to learn about the industry that puts food on our plates without spending an extra dime. Another activity that’s free? People-watching. 6. Buy last year’s merch This year’s Houston Rodeo official merchandise is cute, but one T-shirt can run you $30 or $40. Instead, consider perusing the Rodeo Last Call booth, near the entrance to NRG Center, which sells discounted merchandise from previous years. T-shirts start as low at $9, and many don’t even have years on them. No one will know the difference. Article continues below this ad 7. Imbibe at the Champion Wine Garden The most budget-friendly option is to skip the libations altogether, of course. But if you must imbibe, consider paying a visit to the Champion Wine Garden, where glasses start at $6 — far cheaper than the beer and wine on offer at the main food vendor area.

Shop around for your meal Take a lap around the rodeo’s food vendor area and compare prices before putting in your order. Prices for similar items can range by a few dollars, and if you do some digging, you can find reasonably-priced entrees among the marked-up festival food. We found a \$6 hot dog at Tad’s Bodacious Burritos and a \$7.95 grilled cheese sandwich at Paradise Burgers. 4\. Keep track of your carnival tickets To play games or go on rides at the carnival, you’ll need to buy tickets, which cost \$1.25 each (4 for \$5, 16 for \$20, or 40 for \$50). With most games and rides priced at at least six a pop, your tickets can go fast — especially since you’ll actually be paying with a QR code on a paper card. 6\. Buy last year’s merch This year’s Houston Rodeo official merchandise is cute, but one T-shirt can run you \$30 or \$40. Instead, consider perusing the Rodeo Last Call booth, near the entrance to NRG Center, which sells discounted merchandise from previous years. T-shirts start as low at \$9, and many don’t even have years on them. No one will know the difference. Article continues below this ad **7\. Imbibe at the Champion Wine Garden** The most budget-friendly option is to skip the libations altogether, of course. But if you must imbibe, consider paying a visit to the Champion Wine Garden, where glasses start at \$6 — far cheaper than the beer and wine on offer at the main food vendor area.
