When you think of
Volkswagen
, you might immediately think of the popular and iconic
“slug bug!” Beetle
. However, the German manufacturer has had explosive growth beyond their original flagship and has expanded their territory in recent years to delve into the world of electric vehicle (EV) production- and has done so very successfully with their “ID” line-up.
Since 2017, Volkswagen has been refocused on their
electrification plan
, with a goal to launch at least thirty EV models by 2025 and have up to 25% of their yearly sales volume come from EVs. On the way to reaching those goals, the company has developed EV versions of sedans, race cars, SUVs, and even dune buggies.
In 2020, the company began manufacturing the ID.4, a compact crossover SUV that the company planned to appeal to “the millions, not the millionaires.” Elected “World Car of the Year” and one of Wards “10 Best User Experiences” in 2021, the ID.4 is packed with excellent features and technology and the 2022 year of the electric car can be reserved now!

Based on the prototypes of the
ID.Crozz
and ID.Crozz II that debuted back in 2017 at the Shanghai and Frankfurt Auto Shows, the ID.4 was seen in concept, but camouflaged to avoid taking attention from the newly marketed ID.3, at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The ID.4 production version
was unveiled in September of 2020 and was created to target the North American market (whereas the ID.3 was mostly oriented at the European market). According to CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, Scott Keogh, the ID.4 “drives like a GTI, it has the packaging of a Tiguan, and the purpose of the Beetle.”
In the second market year, the 2022 iteration promises to uphold those values and deliver even more through a few minor alterations. The SUV is offered in two additional trims for the 2022 year -
Pro and Pro S, priced at $42,435 and $46,925 respectively
as well as an optional upgrade to a dual-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain for higher performance and horsepower offered at $3680 more.
With the standard rear-mounted motor, the ID.4 can generate up to 201 horsepower (bumped to 295 with the optional dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version). Towing capacity is up to an impressive 2700 LBS. However, the EV is a bit sluggish in acceleration in exchange, taking 7.6 seconds to accelerate 0-60 MPH (reduced to 5.4 seconds in the upgraded all-wheel drive).

Some of the best features of the ID.4 come in the form of the technology integrated into the SUV. The 82-kWh battery pack can take the SUV up to 280 miles and can be charged with DC fast-charging at 135-kW (up from last year’s 125-kW). Additionally, regenerative braking allows for nominal energy recovery when decelerating. Possibly the best money-saving feature in regard to charging, though, comes from Electrify America- three years of unlimited 30-minute charging sessions for buyers.
Another great piece of technology inside the ID.4 is the ID.Light. This light bar that runs across the dashboard of the SUV is intuitive and uses both glowing light and acoustic cues to let the driver know about things like incoming calls, charge status, and warnings.
The ID.4 is overall very intuitive and was clearly designed with convenience to the driver in mind. The SUV has intuitive start functionality which “senses” your presence and starts the vehicle when a person with the key fob sits in the driver’s seat - the car wakes up all features, turns on screens, and prepares to be driven.
Although a bit less technology forward than the ID.Crozz concept, the ID.4’s cabin and interior are still incredibly comfortable. Heated cloth seats for the front are standard in the SUV and upgraded to faux-leather with 12-way adjustability (with memory function) on the Pro S trim.
The cabin is remarkably quiet and has ample cargo space (30.3 square feet) as well - with the ability to fold down the rear seats for even more space (up to 64.2 square feet total). The area seems even more spacious due to an expansive panoramic glass roof that has the option to become opaquer to reduce the light let in through an electric sunshade feature.
In addition to the vehicle being rife with technology for convenience, the ID.4 is also full of safety features. Enhanced safety and driver assistance technology in the SUV is provided through a system known as
ID.DRIVE
and includes travel assist, rear traffic alerts, active blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, emergency assist, lane assist, light assist, parking distance controls, dynamic road sign display, and front assist. These features have contributed to the ID.4 being named a 2022 “Top Safety Pick+” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
