Especially if you live on a main road or somewhere with a lot of pollution, dirt and grime can build up on your windows quite quickly.\nWith this handy guide to\nwindow cleaning\n, you can bring natural light back into your home and ensure that your exterior is sparkling without having to splurge on a window cleaner. Before you begin, take a look at this video on how to clean a window for a few tips.\nBefore you start\nBe cautious when using chemical products. If a\nladder\n is needed, ensure it is set up on a completely stable and flat surface.  \n1. Prep\nIf you’re cleaning windows inside, remove all objects from the windowsill and take down any curtains or blinds. Use a duster to remove any cobwebs or dust - you'll want your windows to be lint free before you get started. Work from top to bottom, remembering to brush off the windowsill afterwards. That way, you avoid sweeping mess into an area you’ve already cleaned.\nIf washing windows outside, repeat the same steps. However, if you are using a\nladder\n, make sure to wear sensible footwear and place the ladder on a flat, stable surface.\nTop tip:\nTake the opportunity to give your curtains a wash or spray with fabric freshener.\n2. Choose your cleaning solution\nThe best way to clean windows is with cleaning solution and a\ncloth\n, or a bucket full of soapy water (washing-up liquid with warm water) and a non-abrasive sponge. Alternatively, if you don't have any glass cleaner to hand you could create your own solution with white vinegar and warm water, adding a tablespoonful of household ammonia or methylated spirit for stubborn stains. Especially if you live on a main road or somewhere with a lot of pollution, dirt and grime can build up on your windows quite quickly. With this handy guide to window cleaning , you can bring natural light back into your home and ensure that your exterior is sparkling without having to splurge on a window cleaner. Before you begin, take a look at this video on how to clean a window for a few tips. Before you start Be cautious when using chemical products. If a ladder is needed, ensure it is set up on a completely stable and flat surface. 1. Prep If you’re cleaning windows inside, remove all objects from the windowsill and take down any curtains or blinds. Use a duster to remove any cobwebs or dust - you'll want your windows to be lint free before you get started. Work from top to bottom, remembering to brush off the windowsill afterwards. That way, you avoid sweeping mess into an area you’ve already cleaned. If washing windows outside, repeat the same steps. However, if you are using a ladder , make sure to wear sensible footwear and place the ladder on a flat, stable surface. Top tip: Take the opportunity to give your curtains a wash or spray with fabric freshener. 2. Choose your cleaning solution The best way to clean windows is with cleaning solution and a cloth , or a bucket full of soapy water (washing-up liquid with warm water) and a non-abrasive sponge. Alternatively, if you don't have any glass cleaner to hand you could create your own solution with white vinegar and warm water, adding a tablespoonful of household ammonia or methylated spirit for stubborn stains. Fill a spray bottle with your cleaning solution - this will allow you to coat the window glass evenly for a streak-free finish. When handling cleaning chemicals, remember to protect your skin by wearing rubber gloves . 3. Get cleaning Start with the frames first so you don’t drip dirty water onto clean panes. Using an S-motion, wipe down your windows from top to bottom with your chosen cleaning solution. Squeeze out any excess before rubbing gently onto the glass. To clean uPVC windows frames, spritz your cleaning product onto the frame and leave to stand for 10 minutes or so. Then, wipe with a clean, dry microfibre cloth until dry. From the top corner, work in a reverse ‘S’ pattern and when you reach each side of the window, clean away any suds or water with a dry cloth. Stubborn marks may need to be removed with a dry sponge. If you clean your windows regularly, consider investing in a window vac . They are great for cleaning both the inside and outside of windows and work by sucking up any excess water on the pane for a mess-free clean. Top tip: Wiping the squeegee on a clean cloth between strokes to avoid smearing dirt on your clean panes. 5. Buff and finish Finally, use a microfibre cloth to dry the windowpanes and windowsill. Avoid using paper towels, as they might leave lint on your windows, and use crumpled up newspaper instead to buff the windows and really make them sparkle. Prep If you’re cleaning windows inside, remove all objects from the windowsill and take down any curtains or blinds. Use a duster to remove any cobwebs or dust - you'll want your windows to be lint free before you get started. Work from top to bottom, remembering to brush off the windowsill afterwards. That way, you avoid sweeping mess into an area you’ve already cleaned. If washing windows outside, repeat the same steps. However, if you are using a [ladder](https://www.homebase.co.uk/en-uk/tools/ladders/c/h1139), make sure to wear sensible footwear and place the ladder on a flat, stable surface. Top tip: Take the opportunity to give your curtains a wash or spray with fabric freshener. ### 2\. Choose your cleaning solution The best way to clean windows is with cleaning solution and a [cloth](https://www.homebase.co.uk/en-uk/home/cleaning/washing-up-accessories/microfibre-dish-cloths/c/h1346), or a bucket full of soapy water (washing-up liquid with warm water) and a non-abrasive sponge. Alternatively, if you don't have any glass cleaner to hand you could create your own solution with white vinegar and warm water, adding a tablespoonful of household ammonia or methylated spirit for stubborn stains. Fill a spray bottle with your cleaning solution - this will allow you to coat the window glass evenly for a streak-free finish. When handling cleaning chemicals, remember to protect your skin by wearing [rubber gloves](https://www.homebase.co.uk/en-uk/home/cleaning/washing-up-accessories/rubber-gloves/c/h1347). ### 3\. Get cleaning Start with the frames first so you don’t drip dirty water onto clean panes. Using an S-motion, wipe down your windows from top to bottom with your chosen cleaning solution. Squeeze out any excess before rubbing gently onto the glass. To clean uPVC windows frames, spritz your cleaning product onto the frame and leave to stand for 10 minutes or so. Then, wipe with a clean, dry microfibre cloth until dry. Perfect with a squeegee Then, wipe off the excess water with a [squeegee](https://www.homebase.co.uk/en-uk/home/cleaning/window-cleaning/squeegees/c/h1350). From the top corner, work in a reverse ‘S’ pattern and when you reach each side of the window, clean away any suds or water with a dry cloth. Stubborn marks may need to be removed with a dry sponge. They are great for cleaning both the inside and outside of windows and work by sucking up any excess water on the pane for a mess-free clean. Buff and finish Finally, use a microfibre cloth to dry the windowpanes and windowsill. Avoid using paper towels, as they might leave lint on your windows, and use crumpled up newspaper instead to buff the windows and really make them sparkle. If a [ladder](https://www.homebase.co.uk/en-uk/tools/ladders/c/h1139) is needed, ensure it is set up on a completely stable and flat surface. ### 1\. Prep If you’re cleaning windows inside, remove all objects from the windowsill and take down any curtains or blinds. Use a duster to remove any cobwebs or dust - you'll want your windows to be lint free before you get started. Work from top to bottom, remembering to brush off the windowsill afterwards. That way, you avoid sweeping mess into an area you’ve already cleaned. If washing windows outside, repeat the same steps. However, if you are using a [ladder](https://www.homebase.co.uk/en-uk/tools/ladders/c/h1139), make sure to wear sensible footwear and place the ladder on a flat, stable surface. Top tip: Take the opportunity to give your curtains a wash or spray with fabric freshener. ### 2\. Choose your cleaning solution The best way to clean windows is with cleaning solution and a [cloth](https://www.homebase.co.uk/en-uk/home/cleaning/washing-up-accessories/microfibre-dish-cloths/c/h1346), or a bucket full of soapy water (washing-up liquid with warm water) and a non-abrasive sponge. Alternatively, if you don't have any glass cleaner to hand you could create your own solution with white vinegar and warm water, adding a tablespoonful of household ammonia or methylated spirit for stubborn stains. Fill a spray bottle with your cleaning solution - this will allow you to coat the window glass evenly for a streak-free finish. From the top corner, work in a reverse ‘S’ pattern and when you reach each side of the window, clean away any suds or water with a dry cloth. Stubborn marks may need to be removed with a dry sponge.
