It didn’t seem that long ago that 5GB of storage was a lot. For example, it was more than you’d need to back up your entire
first-generation iPhone
. These days, it’s not even enough to store the data required to run
Apple Intelligence
. As video file sizes grow with
increasing resolution
, and our devices run more complex features such as on-device AI, we seem to need more and more storage. With an Apple Account, you get 5GB of iCloud storage to move some files to the cloud, but this isn’t a considerable amount. The good news is that you can buy additional iCloud storage for as little as $0.99 per month for an extra 50GB, and if you need it, you can add as much as 12TB. An iCloud+ subscription gives you more than just additional cloud storage, however. Several other useful iCloud+ features are thrown in to ensure you’re getting your money’s worth.
1. Additional iCloud Storage
The most obvious benefit of paying for iCloud+ is additional storage. With an Apple account, you get 5GB of iCloud storage for free. However, if that’s not enough, you can add more storage with iCloud+.
The cheapest iCloud+ subscription provides an additional 50GB of storage, while the most expensive offers a massive 12TB. Here’s how the pricing breaks down.
50GB:
$0.99 per month
200GB:
$2.99 per month
2TB:
$10.99 per month
6TB:
$32.99 per month
12TB:
$64.99 per month
An Apple One subscription includes all of the iCloud+ features, so switching to Apple One works out cheaper if you already pay for services such as Apple Music and Apple TV. The costs for Apple One are as follows:
Individual:
50GB storage, Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Arcade
Family:
200GB storage, Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Arcade
Premier:
2TB storage, Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, News+
2. iCloud Private Relay
Using
iCloud Private Relay
encrypts your traffic when you browse in Safari. It is sent through two different internet relays, masking your location and IP address from the websites you visit and stopping your internet service provider from seeing your browsing activity.
Your ISP can’t see which websites you visit, and the websites don’t know who you are or where you are. It gives you protection similar to a VPN, but you should know that it’s only enabled when browsing in Safari.
3. Hide My Email
As the name suggests,
Hide My Email
generates a temporary email address that you can use when signing up for accounts on websites or apps. If there is ever a data breach, hackers only get access to the burner email address you’ve used.
Apple will automatically forward email from your temporary address to your Apple Account email address. You can generate a new Hide My Email address in the iCloud settings, but when signing up for accounts, you should also see the Hide My Email option pop up above the keyboard.
4. Custom Email Domains
With iCloud+, you can create your own personalized email addresses
using a custom email domain
. If you don’t own a domain name, you can purchase one via Cloudflare directly through your iPhone settings.
Search for a domain name, and you’ll see a list of available domains and the purchase cost. You can set up as many as five different custom domains and create multiple email addresses for those domains. You need to set up an iCloud email linked to your Apple Account first, but you can do this through the iCloud settings, too.
5. HomeKit Secure Video
Smart security cameras and video doorbells can help protect your home. However, you need to store the footage somewhere. Many products let you store your recordings in the cloud, but you usually need to pay a subscription fee. Some also offer local storage, but this often means you can’t access the recordings while away from home.
If you have an iCloud+ subscription, you can access HomeKit Secure Video. This allows you to store video from a HomeKit-compatible camera in iCloud. You can then access the last 10 days of footage from anywhere. The 50GB plan lets you connect one camera, the 200GB plan lets you connect up to five, and a 2TB plan or higher gives you unlimited connections.
The video recordings are end-to-end encrypted to keep them secure, and the best part is that your HomeKit Secure Video recordings don’t count against your iCloud storage. You’ll need a home hub, such as a HomePod or
Apple TV
, but these devices can analyze the footage and detect people, pets, or cars in your videos.
6. Apple Invites
Apple Invites is a new app for sending event invitations and managing RSVPs. Anyone can respond to an invitation using the app or a web browser, but you need an iCloud+ subscription to create an event.
7. Family Sharing
One of the most valuable features of an iCloud+ subscription is that you can share the cost with others.
Using Family Sharing
, up to six people can share an iCloud+ subscription. Each gets their own storage independent of the others, and everyone gets access to the additional features above, too. It’s a cost-effective way of getting more storage alongside the other iCloud+ benefits.
The Benefits of iCloud+
There’s a lot more to iCloud+ than just additional cloud storage. Some of its features are really useful. Private Relay and Hide My Email are great for protecting your privacy, and HomeKit Secure Video is handy if you have supported smart home devices. It’s worth taking advantage of all the features that iCloud+ offers. |
