A major event on the Chinese calendar, the Mid-Autumn or Moon Festival, marks the end of the autumn harvest and is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar when the moon is brightest. The festival is a celebration of thanksgiving and families gather to hang lanterns and share (and eat!) mooncakes. The lanterns are symbolic of lighting a path to prosperity and good fortune. This festival is the second most important – after Lunar New Year – on the Chinese calendar and is thought to have origins going back at least 3,000 years.
