Close out all those tabs. Turn off your incognito window. At Going, the most exciting flight opportunities find you. But that doesn't mean there aren't a few tips and tricks to get the best deal possible. 1 Start with Google Flights. While there are dozens of search sites for cheap tickets, Google Flights offers the most tools and features to help you quickly search for flights and find the cheapest tickets. If you're unsure how to use Google Flights , we have a guide to walk you through it. You can book directly with the airline or, if you prefer to book with a site where you can earn booking rewards, start with Google Flights to see all of your options and then move over to the other site once you've chosen your flight and are ready to book. No matter where you do your searching, the same best practices for finding cheap tickets apply. 2 Be as flexible as possible. The more narrow your search, the fewer your options and the lower your chances of snagging a cheap flight. If you can be flexible on the days you fly, the airlines, and the length of your trip, you can increase your chances of snagging a great deal. 3 Focus on getting across the ocean as cheaply as possible. You're probably wondering why you'd be flexible on where you're going. If you want to go to Amsterdam, you want to go to Amsterdam. But what if it was $300 cheaper to fly to Paris, which is just a few hours from Amsterdam by train? When you're flying long-haul internationally, take a look at options near your final destination. It may be cheaper to fly there and then connect to where you want to end up. 4 Book during the right window. Meaning, not too far in advance and not too late. The best deals on cheap flights are usually found 1–3 months in advance for domestic flights and 2–8 months in advance for international tickets. 5 Act fast. Cheap flights don’t wait for you! When airlines drop prices, they don't usually do it for long. If you want to snag a cheap ticket, you have to move quickly. Sometimes the price rises within hours or even minutes. Not sure if you can get the time off work? The 24-hour rule can help. This US DOT regulation says airlines have to offer you the chance to hold your fare or to get a cash refund within 24 hours of booking (and most airlines choose the latter). This means you can book and then figure out your plans. If it doesn't work, you can cancel within 24 hours and get a full refund. 6 Subscribe to Going (formerly Scott's Cheap Flights) and receive cheap flight alerts all the time. By subscribing to Going, you’ll get instant alerts when cheap flights pop up from the airports you choose to follow—no searching necessary. Depending on your membership tier, you can track both domestic and international deals and set custom flight alerts so you never miss a great fare from your home airport. Let the deals come to you while you focus on planning the fun parts of your trip. 7 Use airline mistake fares to your advantage. Sometimes airlines accidentally publish ultra-low fares—sometimes hundreds of dollars below the usual price. These deals, which we've been uncovering since our Scott's Cheap Flights days, can disappear within hours (or even minutes). But if you’re quick, you can lock them in and save big. Going travel alerts will notify you instantly so you never miss out. 8 Watch for shoulder season bargains. Flights are often far cheaper in the weeks between peak and low seasons. You’ll enjoy smaller crowds and great weather, plus the cheapest fares. 9 Set custom alerts for dream destinations. With Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights), you can create alerts for any route, and we’ll find the best airfare for you.

Got an impromptu family vacation? Business? Emergency? [Last-minute flight deals](https://www.going.com/guides/how-to-find-cheap-last-minute-flights) can sometimes be harder to come by, but not impossible. Many people assume that if an airline isn't fully booked for a flight, they might drop the prices a few days before take-off. That's often not true. Airlines tend to have enough demand from last-minute business travelers, who will pay even a higher last-minute price. This means airlines tend to offer cheaper tickets up front and gradually increase their prices closer to the flight. Of course, that doesn't mean there won't be price drops, so getting good at planning around a good deal is the best tool in not breaking the bank for travel. Just like there are best practices for getting a good deal, there's some strategy in approaching tickets at the last minute. Start by checking surrounding airports. You might be able to fly out of New York’s LaGuardia, for example, at a lower price than JFK. You can also look at [one-way tickets](https://www.going.com/guides/how-to-find-cheap-one-way-international-flights). This gives you the flexibility to book different airlines that offer the cheapest flight each way. If you're traveling in a group, it might be worth booking separately. Some people might want to avoid [budget airlines](https://www.going.com/guides/the-best-and-worst-budget-airlines-for-us-domestic-flights), whereas others might like the idea of saving as much as possible. You can also book the cheapest seat versus trying to reserve five or more tickets. ### When are flights cheapest? There is typically a [golden window for booking flights](https://www.going.com/guides/the-best-time-to-book-a-cheap-flight)—not too far in advance and not too late. The best deals are usually found 1–3 months in advance for domestic flights and 2–8 months in advance for international tickets. With Going, we send flight deals as airlines drop prices, allowing you to plan ahead. ### Why do flights get canceled? There is nothing worse than a [canceled flight](https://www.going.com/guides/airline-changes-or-cancels-your-flight)—except maybe taxes. It's especially upsetting when we've spent a lot of time and money planning a vacation and then, poof! The flight is not happening. Just remember that there is always a good reason, even if it's not immediately obvious. Weather is a big one. An airplane cannot safely navigate in some weather conditions, like snowstorms, hurricanes, fog, strong winds, or even extreme heat! Airlines will do their best to put you on another flight, but they aren't penalized for grounding a plane for weather conditions. This means that if you lose money for missed connections, delayed check-ins, or extended stays, you aren't owed compensation. This is where travel insurance, or a credit card with travel protections, can really help. Airlines might also cancel flights for security reasons, particularly if an airport you're flying from or to has any threats or scares. You should never leave your baggage unattended or joke about harm, and you should always report strange or suspicious behavior. The TSA says it's more common than people think to have foolish people make bad jokes or pull pranks. Planes have mechanical problems, just like your car might get a ‘check engine’ light or flat tire. It is in everyone's best interest to ensure planes are tip-top shape to fly. Typically, mechanical problems only lead to inconvenient delays, but sometimes flights are canceled if the plane can't be repaired quickly and there isn’t another one available. Always check individual airline policies when faced with this sort of delay or cancellation. Since this is within the airline's control, they can rebook you, potentially upgrade, or compensate you. And always be kind to airline and airport staff. When you smile through the pain, people are more likely to do the same. Missing crew or missing aircraft. Just as your flight can be delayed or canceled, if another flight (completely unrelated to yours) gets grounded, an aircraft and its crew might be stuck elsewhere, and you can’t proceed as scheduled. When this happens, don't panic. Chances are that the airline is already working to remedy the situation. They will be scrambling to find new planes or flight crew, so there may be a delay or two before they resort to canceling the flight. If you booked an early-bird ticket, you have many more options of getting put on a different flight versus being stuck overnight. However, airlines might still owe you compensation, if you know what to ask for. ### Why are flights so expensive? There are several factors involved but really, it's pretty simple: rising jet fuel prices, staff shortages, high demand, and capitalism. Airlines don't have to set prices at industry standard, especially if they dominate an airport. At airline hubs, where airports cater to one major airline, the competition that would create lower prices isn’t as strong—when nine out of ten flights are from one airline, they can set their own prices and passengers have to deal with it. But this doesn't mean you have to overpay for flights. Even if “average” fares are expensive, you don’t need to worry about averages. You just need to worry about booking when the price is low. ### When is the best time to get cheap flights? [There’s no single best day to book your flights](https://www.going.com/guides/the-cheapest-day-to-buy-flights). It’s not Tuesday at 3PM, or exactly 44 days before your trip. However, there is a timeframe when a good deal is most likely to pop up—1–3 months in advance for domestic trips, and 2–8 months in advance for international trips. When it comes to the cheapest time to travel, prices for flights (and vacations in general) are influenced by traffic. Many people travel during the summer and holiday seasons because of more flexible PTO, school breaks, good weather, and special occasions. This is known as a destination’s “peak season.” By contrast, fewer people travel during a destination’s “off-season.” For example, the monsoon season is Thailand’s “off-season.” “Shoulder season” is the sweet spot for good weather conditions and decent prices right before or immediately after peak season. If you want to go to Europe, for instance, consider planning your trip during spring or fall. And if you absolutely have to travel during peak season, book tickets well in advance. ### How do people get super cheap flights? People find ultra-low fares—like mistake or error fares—mostly by using alerts from services like Going, which monitor pricing glitches, currency mismatches, or human errors. Then, they notify users instantly when these deals pop up—often saving travelers 50–90% on typical flight prices. ### Which is the best website to book cheap flights? Going itself is more of a flight deal alert service than a booking site. We send great flight deals to our members, then redirect you to airlines or booking engines to complete the booking process. For flexibility, combining Going for deal alerts with Google Flights to manually explore options and price trends—and finally book—is widely recommended. ### What is the secret to getting cheap flights? There is no one secret, though there are several tricks that can help you lock in a great flight deal. The key is flexibility—flying on off‑peak days like Tuesday or Wednesday (and sometimes early Saturday), booking during the Goldilocks Window (1–3 months before domestic travel or 2–8 months before international travel), and combining fare alerts with tools like Going and Google Flights to spot sudden drops or mistake fares. ## Explore Cheap Flights ### Flights to US Destinations ### Flights to Close out all those tabs. Turn off your incognito window. At Going, the most exciting flight opportunities find you. But that doesn't mean there aren't a few tips and tricks to get the best deal possible. ## 1Start with Google Flights. While there are dozens of search sites for cheap tickets, Google Flights offers the most tools and features to help you quickly search for flights and find the cheapest tickets. If you're unsure [how to use Google Flights](https://www.going.com/guides/how-to-use-google-flights), we have a guide to walk you through it. You can book directly with the airline or, if you prefer to book with a site where you can earn booking rewards, start with Google Flights to see all of your options and then move over to the other site once you've chosen your flight and are ready to book. No matter where you do your searching, the same best practices for finding cheap tickets apply. ## 2Be as flexible as possible. The more narrow your search, the fewer your options and the lower your chances of snagging a cheap flight. If you can be flexible on the days you fly, the airlines, and the length of your trip, you can increase your chances of snagging a great deal. ## 3Focus on getting across the ocean as cheaply as possible. You're probably wondering why you'd be flexible on where you're going. If you want to go to Amsterdam, you want to go to Amsterdam. But what if it was \$300 cheaper to fly to Paris, which is just a few hours from Amsterdam by train? When you're flying long-haul internationally, take a look at options near your final destination. It may be cheaper to fly there and then connect to where you want to end up. ## 4Book during the right window. Meaning, not too far in advance and not too late. The best deals on cheap flights are usually found 1–3 months in advance for domestic flights and 2–8 months in advance for international tickets. ## 5Act fast. Cheap flights don’t wait for you\! ## 6Subscribe to Going (formerly Scott's Cheap Flights) and receive cheap flight alerts all the time. ## 7Use airline mistake fares to your advantage. ## 8Watch for shoulder season bargains. Flights are often far cheaper in the weeks between peak and low seasons. You’ll enjoy smaller crowds and great weather, plus the cheapest fares. ## 9Set custom alerts for dream destinations. With Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights), you can create alerts for any route, and we’ll find the best airfare for you.
