How to Get Cheaper Travel Insurance
Compare quotes and buy online
Offered travel insurance by your tour operator or travel agent? You could probably get a better deal by comparing quotes online instead.
Choose the right policy type
If youâre only taking one holiday this year, single-trip travel insurance is usually cheaper. But if you travel more often, annual multi-trip cover could save you money. Compare both to check.
Get the right cover for your trip
Thereâs no point buying cheap cover that excludes all the activities youâll want to do. Make sure you buy a policy tailored to your needs. Like interrailing insurance, or cover for specific sporting activities like cycling travel insurance.
Only pay for what you need
To avoid spending more, only add optional extras if you need them. Think about it instead of adding gadget cover, could you leave your expensive electronics at home instead?

Frequently asked questions
What is the best day to buy travel insurance?
The best time to buy travel insurance is as soon as youâve booked your trip. That way youâre protected if something unexpected forces you to cancel before you go - like a
bereavement
, accident, or hospital stay. Although getting cover early doesnât necessarily affect the price, it does give you more peace of mind.
What does excess mean in travel insurance?
Excess is what you must pay towards each claim you make. For example, if you claim for ÂŁ1,000 and your excess is ÂŁ75, the excess amount is deducted from your claim, so your insurer would only pay out ÂŁ925.
You can get a travel insurance policy with zero-excess and while they're often more expensive, you get 100% back from a payout, should your claim be accepted.
Some insurers might give you the option to remove the excess from your policy for an added fee.
Does travel insurance get more expensive closer to the trip?
Sometimes. While prices can vary, they donât always increase the closer you get to your departure date - and they donât always go down either. Buying early usually wonât cost any more, and it means youâll have cover in place if you have to cancel your trip.
When should I start my cover?
For a single-trip policy, your policy should start from the day youâre due to leave, not the day you book.
If you have an annual policy you just need to make sure your trip occurs during the dates your cover is in force.
As long as youâve bought your insurance before anything goes wrong, youâll still be covered if you have to cancel your holiday.
Will travel insurance cover lost passports?
According to
Defaqto
, 90% of single trip policies and 91% of annual policies offer cover for lost passports. So itâs worth checking the fine print of your policy to make sure it does.
Do you need travel insurance for holidays in the UK?
You won't need the medical aspect, because we've got the NHS. But itâs still a good idea to haveÂ
UK travel insurance
 if youâre having a staycation.
Missed transport and cancellation cover is useful if youâre taking an internal flight. Gadget cover can be worthwhile too, if youâre travelling in the UK with expensive smart devices.
How do I make a claim on my travel insurance?
Document any evidence of the incident if itâs safe to do so and get in touch with your insurer to make a claim (or get someone else to do it for you).
Every policy has a list of exclusions which will void your claim, as these are different for each insurer, it is important to understand
how to avoid claim rejections
and look over the terms and conditions before you set off.
Is it cheaper to buy travel insurance from my holiday provider?
No, not usually. If the policy seems cheap this could be because it doesnât cover very much.
Donât feel pressured to buy it if it doesnât seem right for you. Itâs always worth comparing travel insurance policies so you know youâre getting good value for money - and adequate cover.
What medical conditions need declaring for travel insurance?
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you need to tell your insurer before you take out travel insurance. Conditions can include anything youâve had symptoms, treatment or advice for recently - from mobility issues to mental illness. Declaring them makes sure youâre properly covered if you need medical help while youâre away.
What is the most common travel insurance claim?
According to
our research
, the top three reasons that people claim on their travel insurance are:
Transport delays
Medical costs/expenses
Lost baggage
Whether itâs a cancelled flight or a long delay at the airport, having cover in place can help if your journey doesnât go to plan.
Does travel insurance cover wildfires?
Travel insurance includes
cancellation cover
if you have to cancel your holiday due to a
natural disaster
like wildfires.
It might also include
travel disruption cover
, which could compensate you if your trip is interrupted, cut short or otherwise affected by emergency situations outside of your control.
But travel insurance won't cover a wildfire if it has already started before you booked your holiday. It will only cover unexpected events that might happen during your trip.
Your policy might also exclude areas that are known to be at high risk of wildfires. Always check the terms and conditions of your policy, and think carefully before booking a holiday in an area at high risk of wildfires.
It's a good idea to check the latest Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advice on the country you're planning to visit first.

## Why travel insurance is essential for your holiday
Travel insurance provides a safety net while abroad, offering protection against unexpected costs and emergencies. Itâs just as essential as your passport and suitcase, so donât leave it off your holiday checklist.

### Why people get travel insurance
Cover for unexpected medical emergencies abroad - The [ABI](https://www.abi.org.uk/news/news-articles/2025/8/eight-to-embark-travel-insurance-tips/) reports the average emergency medical treatment claim in 2024 was ÂŁ1,528

Compensation for lost, stolen, or delayed luggage and valuables
Legal and liability protection if you accidentally cause injury or damage
Peace of mind so you can enjoy your trip without worrying about the unexpected

## How does our comparison work?

Weâll list the quotes in order of price, and weâll also show you [Defaqto](https://www.gocompare.com/defaqto/) ratings, included add-ons, excesses and some basic details of the cover. You can filter things like the maximum excess and the add-ons youâd like until you reach the right price for the cover you need.
When youâve made your choice, click âview detailsâ and then âproceedâ to go through to the insurerâs website. You can normally buy your travel insurance online, and if you have any questions thereâll be a phone number you can call.

## How to Get Cheaper Travel Insurance
1. ### Compare quotes and buy online
Offered travel insurance by your tour operator or travel agent? You could probably get a better deal by comparing quotes online instead.
2. ### Choose the right policy type
If youâre only taking one holiday this year, single-trip travel insurance is usually cheaper. But if you travel more often, annual multi-trip cover could save you money. Compare both to check.
3. ### Get the right cover for your trip
Thereâs no point buying cheap cover that excludes all the activities youâll want to do. Make sure you buy a policy tailored to your needs. Like interrailing insurance, or cover for specific sporting activities like cycling travel insurance.
4. ### Only pay for what you need
To avoid spending more, only add optional extras if you need them. Think about it instead of adding gadget cover, could you leave your expensive electronics at home instead?

### Travel insurance is just good sense.
> One of the biggest reasons to get travel insurance for your holiday is to cover any surprise medical costs abroad. Here we have the NHS but in other countries, people are expected to pay their medical fees themselves or through insurance. Travel insurance can help cover those fees but even if youâre planning on a staycation in the UK, it can also help cover financial losses for cancelled flights, lost luggage, and more.â

- A three-star rating means itâs a standard product providing an average level of features and benefits
- A one-star rating means itâs a basic product offering only a few features and benefits
## When should you buy travel insurance?
The best time to get your travel insurance is immediately after youâve booked your trip.
According to [our research](https://press.gocompare.com/news/one-in-four-purchase-travel-insurance-on-the-day-they-fly), 27% of travellers leave buying their travel insurance at the last minute. If you need to cancel your holiday before this point, due to a medical emergency for example, youâll be out of pocket.
Buying your travel insurance earlier wonât cost you more and it means youâre protected for longer - itâs a win-win.

## Frequently asked questions
### What is the best day to buy travel insurance?
The best time to buy travel insurance is as soon as youâve booked your trip. That way youâre protected if something unexpected forces you to cancel before you go - like a [bereavement](https://www.gocompare.com/travel-insurance/guide/death-in-family/), accident, or hospital stay. Although getting cover early doesnât necessarily affect the price, it does give you more peace of mind.
### What does excess mean in travel insurance?
Excess is what you must pay towards each claim you make. For example, if you claim for ÂŁ1,000 and your excess is ÂŁ75, the excess amount is deducted from your claim, so your insurer would only pay out ÂŁ925.
You can get a travel insurance policy with zero-excess and while they're often more expensive, you get 100% back from a payout, should your claim be accepted.
Some insurers might give you the option to remove the excess from your policy for an added fee.
### Does travel insurance get more expensive closer to the trip?
Sometimes. While prices can vary, they donât always increase the closer you get to your departure date - and they donât always go down either. Buying early usually wonât cost any more, and it means youâll have cover in place if you have to cancel your trip.
### When should I start my cover?
For a single-trip policy, your policy should start from the day youâre due to leave, not the day you book.
If you have an annual policy you just need to make sure your trip occurs during the dates your cover is in force.
As long as youâve bought your insurance before anything goes wrong, youâll still be covered if you have to cancel your holiday.
### Will travel insurance cover lost passports?
According to [Defaqto](https://www.gocompare.com/defaqto/), 90% of single trip policies and 91% of annual policies offer cover for lost passports. So itâs worth checking the fine print of your policy to make sure it does.
### Do you need travel insurance for holidays in the UK?
You won't need the medical aspect, because we've got the NHS. But itâs still a good idea to have [UK travel insurance](https://www.gocompare.com/travel-insurance/uk-cover/) if youâre having a staycation.
Missed transport and cancellation cover is useful if youâre taking an internal flight. Gadget cover can be worthwhile too, if youâre travelling in the UK with expensive smart devices.
### How do I make a claim on my travel insurance?
Document any evidence of the incident if itâs safe to do so and get in touch with your insurer to make a claim (or get someone else to do it for you).
Every policy has a list of exclusions which will void your claim, as these are different for each insurer, it is important to understand [how to avoid claim rejections](https://www.gocompare.com/travel-insurance/guide/how-to-avoid-claim-rejections/) and look over the terms and conditions before you set off.
### Is it cheaper to buy travel insurance from my holiday provider?
No, not usually. If the policy seems cheap this could be because it doesnât cover very much.
Donât feel pressured to buy it if it doesnât seem right for you. Itâs always worth comparing travel insurance policies so you know youâre getting good value for money - and adequate cover.
### What medical conditions need declaring for travel insurance?
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you need to tell your insurer before you take out travel insurance. Conditions can include anything youâve had symptoms, treatment or advice for recently - from mobility issues to mental illness. Declaring them makes sure youâre properly covered if you need medical help while youâre away.
What is the most common travel insurance claim?
According to [our research](https://press.gocompare.com/news/travel-woes-top-reasons-people-claim-on-travel-insurance-revealed), the top three reasons that people claim on their travel insurance are:
- Transport delays
- Medical costs/expenses
- Lost baggage
Whether itâs a cancelled flight or a long delay at the airport, having cover in place can help if your journey doesnât go to plan.
### Does travel insurance cover wildfires?
Travel insurance includes [cancellation cover](https://www.gocompare.com/travel-insurance/cancellation-cover/) if you have to cancel your holiday due to a [natural disaster](https://www.gocompare.com/travel-insurance/guide/natural-disasters-and-severe-weather/) like wildfires.
It might also include [travel disruption cover](https://www.gocompare.com/travel-insurance/guide/travel-disruption-cover/), which could compensate you if your trip is interrupted, cut short or otherwise affected by emergency situations outside of your control.

Travel insurance will:
Compensate you if you have to cancel or cut your trip short due to ill health or other unforeseen events
Cover the costs of medical treatment if you fall ill or are injured abroad
Cover the costs of things like lost, stolen, or delayed baggage

### Why people get travel insurance
Cover for unexpected medical emergencies abroad - The [ABI](https://www.abi.org.uk/news/news-articles/2025/8/eight-to-embark-travel-insurance-tips/) reports the average emergency medical treatment claim in 2024 was ÂŁ1,528
Protection if a trip is cancelled or cut short, for something like ill health or a bereavement
Compensation for lost, stolen, or delayed luggage and valuables
Legal and liability protection if you accidentally cause injury or damage
Peace of mind so you can enjoy your trip without worrying about the unexpected
### Who needs travel insurance?
Solo travellers - Protection if youâre travelling alone for business or leisure
Couples, families and groups - Covers everyone on the trip under one policy, often cheaper than separate policies
Frequent travellers - Annual multi-trip insurance can save money and provide continuous cover
Backpackers and long-stay travellers - Ideal for extended stays or gap year adventures abroad
People with pre-existing medical conditions - Specialist policies available so youâre protected
## Travel insurance that fits your party
Travelling with your partner or spouse? Going on a family trip? Or heading off as a larger group? Make sure you compare travel insurance to find the right protection that fits your party.
### Couples travel insurance
- Covers you and your spouse/partner on one policy
- Youâll need to be in a relationship, over 18, and youâll usually need to live together
- Could be cheaper and less hassle than you each organising your own travel insurance
### Family travel insurance
- Covers one to two adults, and up to eight children
- Could be cheaper than your party buying separate cover
- The children must live with you and be under 18, otherwise you might need group travel insurance
### Group travel insurance
- Cover up to 10 people on one policy (or more, in some cases)
- Protect extended family, friends, club members, or colleagues heading on the same trip
- Could be cheaper than your party all buying separate cover
## How does our comparison work?
Once youâve told us about you, your trip, and your travel insurance requirements, we get to work. We crunch the data and get quotes from a wide range of trusted insurers to give you the choice you need.

How to Get Cheaper Travel Insurance

### Travel tip:
The [Defaqto](https://www.gocompare.com/defaqto/) star rating gives you an independent review of the quality of the policy - so always compare both price and star rating.
- A five-star rating means itâs an excellent product with a comprehensive range of features and benefits

Frequently asked questions
