A match-issued UEFA Cup final shirt of Ugo Ehiogu is part of a collection of the
Middlesbrough
legend’s items available at auction.
‌
Celebrating the life and legacy of club legend who died in April 2017, the auction is fully supported by Ehiogu’s family and backed by
Boro
, with net proceeds going directly to the family.
‌
Ehiogu wrote his name into the Boro history books during his seven-year stay on Teesside, during which the club enjoyed its most successful period. As well as winning its first and, to date, only major piece of silverware in the 2004 Carling Cup final, Boro also had two European campaigns, reaching the UEFA Cup final in Eindhoven in 2006.
‌
The UEFA Cup final shirt available at the auction is a match-issued shirt, which means it was one of the shirts produced with the intention of being used in the game, but wasn’t actually worn on the night, with Ehiogu an unused sub.
The shirt carries Ehiogu’s name and number, the UEFA Cup sleeve badges, and the chest embroidery to identify it as a UEFA Cup final shirt. It is signed by the whole Boro squad from that night’s historic game against Sevilla.
It’s among a number of shirts from Ehiogu’s collection up for auction as part of MatchWornShirt’s Legends’ collection. The Ehiogu collection includes match-worn, match-issued and squad-signed shirts from across his playing career, reflecting his glittering achievements in the game.
‌
As well as shirts he wore for Aston Villa and England U21s, there are opposition-player shirts that were swapped after games, including from iconic knockout games against FC Basel and Steaua Bucharest.
There’s also a match-worn Yakubu Portsmouth shirt which he wore against Boro in 2004, as he scored four goals in a 5-1 win, a year before then moving to the Riverside. Two Boro home shirts from the 2016-17 season, signed by that year’s Boro team, which were gifted to the family after Ehiogu’s death in 2017, aged 44, are also included.
A Middlesbrough spokesperson said: “Ugo Ehiogu remains a hugely important figure in the history of this football club. This collection is a fitting tribute to his legacy, and we’re proud to support an initiative that allows supporters to remember Ugo while directly supporting his family.”
‌
The auction is live now until next Saturday (January 31), with the collection split into three categories, which end at different times.
Auction details
The collection will be split across three online auctions:
Ugo Ehiogu Collection – United Kingdom (including the UEFA Cup final and Yakubu shirts): 23 January, 7pm – 31 January, 2pm
‌
Ugo Ehiogu Collection – International (including FC Basel and Steaua Bucharest shirts): 23 January, 7pm – 31 January, 2pm
Ugo Ehiogu Collection – Squad Signed Shirts (Including the two Boro 2016-17 signed shirts): 23 January, 7pm – 28 January, 7pm
