Meta TitleHow To Build Your Confidence: A Seven-Day Plan
Meta DescriptionHow can Erika build her confidence? Here's a seven-day plan!

Boilerpipe Text
Dear Liz, My job was horrible last year. Last year the company reorganized and we never knew who was going to still have a job the following week. I made it through 2017 somehow. I changed departments twice last year. My new boss loves me but that doesn't mean she will have budget dollars to keep me. I'm job-hunting right now. My problem is my confidence. I need to work on that. I know my skills are strong. I know I'm employable. I still get stuck in the mindset, "I hope these employers like me!" I get stuck on the idea that I might not be good enough, smart enough, or whatever. Do you have any tips for specifically working on my confidence? Thanks Liz, Erika Shutterstock Dear Erika, Hats off to you! I'm so happy to hear that you are stepping into your power. Here is a mantra I hope you will repeat to yourself whenever it is helpful: "I am perfect right now. Only the people who get me, deserve me." Nowhere is this sentiment more true than in the job search realm. You will meet all kinds of people when you  start interviewing. Some of them will adore your brand of jazz and others will let you know that they think you're awful, incompetent, unqualified, stupid, and unfit to be in their presence. They won't convey that message out loud, of course. It will be more of a feeling you get when you're with them, or corresponding with them. Here's the thing about those people: God bless them! They are no one to you. They do not have permission to affect your self-esteem. You are in charge. If you are ready for haters and less-than-well-wishers when you begin your job search, then it won't bother you so much when they show up. If you never run into a rude or nasty person on your job search, magnificent! However, if you are ready for a negative reaction from a recruiter or employer then you won't be surprised or nearly as disappointed if you run into one. Most job seekers take at least a little mojo hit when they step out onto the job search stage. It's normal. It's appropriate to work on your confidence with as much focus and intention as you work on your resume, or any other project you care about. It's important, because your mojo or confidence is the only fuel you've got to power your job search -- and everything else you want to accomplish in your life. Little by little as you are invited to interviews and then as you interview with more people, your normal equilibrium will come back. You will begin to feel a little more confident at each interview. Here is your seven-day confidence-building plan: 1. On Monday, get a journal that you love. Get a pen that you think you'll enjoy writing with. 2. On Tuesday, pay very close attention to everything you do from the minute you get out of bed. You might find it hard to pay close attention to everything you do, because our minds are trained to go back to our to-do list or our problems and think about other things when we are puttering around the house, getting dressed, brushing our teeth and having breakfast. Try not to leave your body and start thinking about other things. Pay attention to the water when you brush your teeth. Notice how the eggs in the pan look. Stay totally focused on everything you do as long as you can, or until you finish cleaning up breakfast. Write in your journal on Tuesday. What did it feel like to notice everything you did for a short time? Did it change your perspective for a little while after you stopped focusing on everything? Would you like to try that exercise again tomorrow? If you want to, write about your job search ideas and your dream job. 3. On Wednesday, take a walk or a hike, or get on your bicycle or dance for twenty minutes. If you already work out or get active on Wednesdays, try something new on top of your  usual routine. Write in your journal on Wednesday. Write about the things, people and situations that build your confidence and the things, people and situations that suck your confidence away. Write about something you know you're really good at. 4. On Thursday, do something completely for yourself like a massage, a meditation session or whatever will make you feel well taken care of. Reach out to a friend who builds you up. You don't need a reason to reach out to them. Just write, text or call and suggest that you two get together  because you would like to see them. Write in your journal on Thursday. Write about your greatest triumphs, successes and "Aha!s" in your life so far. Write about what you've learned about yourself so far, and passions or themes in your life you want to explore further. 5. On Friday, make a plan for the weekend. Even if you never make weekend plans, make a plan this time. Set aside specific time for yourself, and time for your job search if you want. Make time to review what you've written in your journal so far. Get out and be physical again. Work in your garden. Clean out your garage. Do something to get out of your head and into your body -- and feel a sense of accomplishment! Write in your journal on Friday. Write about what you love to do, what you're good at and what you think you could get paid for doing. Don't limit yourself. Don't think that you can only pursue jobs that are just like the jobs you've already held. As you back away from feeling that your job search is out of your control and move into your power, you will realize that you have more control than you might have thought. Confidence is a kind of trust. It's trust in yourself. Can you weather the bumps and shocks of leaving one job and getting a new one? Yes you can. You are mighty but you might not know it yet. 6. On Saturday, do something far out of your comfort zone. Plan it with a friend or step out alone. Shake yourself out of your stupor. You will not believe how your  muscles will grow whenever you try something new. Make a list of small ways to keep stepping out of your comfort zone next week and perhaps forever. You could drive to work a different way. You could try a different haircut or style of clothing. You could rent a movie that you would never, ever watch normally.  You could go to an event that you never thought you would like. 7. On Sunday, get physical however it works best for you. (Check with your doctor before beginning any exercise program!) Get creative. Write poetry or pull your old violin out of the closet, or write a short story. You are a creative being. Our work/home/work/home lifestyle doesn't allow a lot of time or space for creativity. Give yourself that space now! You're on a mission. Rebuilding your mojo supply is a big part of that mission. You need every drop of mojo to get the job you deserve! What better day to give yourself the gift of your own creativity, than Sunday before you go back to work? 8. On Monday #2, write about what you learned in the previous week. You experimented with focus on Tuesday morning. Maybe you can try the experiment again this week and make it a little longer. Maybe you can switch it up and try the focus exercise at work. On Wednesday you tried a new physical activity. How did it work for you? What did it make you want to try next? On Thursday you took care of yourself. Are you dying to do it again? Maybe you feel a bit guilty taking care of yourself when there are so many other things you could be doing. Write about that! On Friday, you made a plan for the weekend. Was your weekend different than usual as a result? On Saturday you got out of your comfort zone. What effect did that have on you? There are a lot of cool places to go outside your comfort zone. Where do you want to go next? On Sunday, you got creative. Did you wake up a sleeping dragon? Is your creativity flowing out a little faster now? You have more power than you could ever imagine, Erika. You are stepping into your power now, in this new chapter of your life. It's your movie. You are the director, the cinematographer and the star. You also get to write the script! You've survived shakes and shocks already. Little by little, you are already moving up in altitude! All the best, Liz

Apr 18, 2018, 06:32pm EDT Apr 18, 2018, 06:57pm EDT This article is more than 8 years old. Thanks Liz, Erika ![Shutterstock](https://specials-images.forbesimg.com/dam/imageserve/1071619181/960x0.jpg?fit=scale) Shutterstock Dear Erika, Hats off to you! Here is your seven-day confidence-building plan: 1\. On Monday, get a journal that you love. Get a pen that you think you'll enjoy writing with. 2\. 3\. 4\. 5\. On Friday, make a plan for the weekend. Even if you never make weekend plans, make a plan this time. Set aside specific time for yourself, and time for your job search if you want. Make time to review what you've written in your journal so far. Get out and be physical again. Work in your garden. Clean out your garage. Do something to get out of your head and into your body -- and feel a sense of accomplishment\! 6\. 7\. 8\. On Monday \#2, write about what you learned in the previous week. Write about that\! You also get to write the script\! You've survived shakes and shocks already. Little by little, you are already moving up in altitude\! Here is your seven-day confidence-building plan: 1\. On Monday, get a journal that you love. Get a pen that you think you'll enjoy writing with. 2\. 3\. 4\. 6\. 7\. 8\. On Monday \#2, write about what you learned in the previous week. Write about that\! You also get to write the script\! You've survived shakes and shocks already. Little by little, you are already moving up in altitude\! All the best, Liz
