Every Monday, FIFA spotlights a World Cup record. Here, we look at the only two teams to have won the tournament in consecutive editions. France came agonisingly close to joining an elite two-nation club when they were beaten in perhaps the greatest FIFA World Cup™ final of all time at Qatar 2022. Argentina’s penalty shootout victory prevented Les Bleus retaining the title they won at Russia 2018 – and joining Italy and Brazil as the only teams to have won back-to-back World Cups. Unstoppable Azzurri Unstoppable Azzurri The Italians were the first to achieve the feat. Having lifted the trophy on their home turf in 1934, beating Czechoslovakia in the final, they headed to France 1938 in ominous form. Under the leadership of legendary coach Vittorio Pozzo, they were in the midst of an unbeaten run which eventually ran to 30 matches and spanned four years from 1935 to 1939. That sequence included a triumphant Olympic Football Tournament campaign in 1936 and the successful defence of their World Cup crown two years later. Italy overcame Norway, France and Brazil on their way to the championship match, where they beat Hungary 4-2 in a thrilling clash. The outbreak of war meant the next World Cup was not held until 1950, and Gli Azzurri’s three-in-a-row ambitions ended when they were eliminated in the group stage. Brazil conquer in Sweden and Chile Brazil conquer in Sweden and Chile Brazil would become the next side to win the sport’s most coveted prize in successive editions. A Seleção won the 1958 tournament in exhilarating style, with a 17-year-old Pele starring in a march to glory which culminated in a 5-2 final win over hosts Sweden. Brazil’s hopes of a first-ever ‘three-peat’ at England 1966 were also dashed in the group stage, however, with defeats to Hungary and Portugal resulting in a surprise early exit. One step too far One step too far As well as France in 2022, two other teams have come within one match of winning consecutive World Cups. Argentina were runners-up to West Germany at Italy 1990, four years after Diego Maradona and Co had clinched the trophy by beating the same opponents in the final. [Argentina’s penalty shootout victory prevented *Les Bleus*](https://www.plus.fifa.com/en/content/argentina-v-france-final-fifa-world-cup-qatar-2022/46772b92-24c3-4315-87da-158ef7af6259?gl=gb)retaining the title they won at Russia 2018 – and joining Italy and Brazil as the only teams to have won back-to-back World Cups. ## **Unstoppable Azzurri****Unstoppable Azzurri** The Italians were the first to achieve the feat. ![19\.06.1938, Italy players and staff celebrate winning the tournament after defeating Hungary in the final in Colombes.
