China has launched what it claims to be the largest electric container ship with a 50,000kWh+ battery capacity. Shanghai-headquartered China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) launched the 120 metres long, 24 metres wide and 10,000 ton Shipping Green Water 01 recently. Enlit Africa returns to the CTICC from 19 to 21 May in 2026 The transportation and shipping company has offices in several countries, including in South Africa. Last March, the company said: “The 700 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) electric container ship is the world’s first large all-battery container ship for long-distance transport.” A second electric container ship by the company has also been in the works since May 2023. Image Source: COSCO The company says the total capacity of the battery is more than 50,000kWh. This can be renewed through the box-type mobile power supply, “a fixation of long charging time, low loading capacity and short range of the traditional electric container ship.”  “It is expected that a single ship can reduce carbon dioxide emissions of 2,918 tonnes, equivalent to 2,035 family cars a year, or 160,000 trees.”  Have you read? Making commercial case to use hydrogen in marine engines The vessel has so far been put to use on the Yangtze River, shipping cargo from Jiangsu to ports up to Shanghai.  The route covers close to 1,000 kilometres without needing recharge. The container ship is expected to save 3,900 kilograms of fuel per 100 nautical miles (185.2 kilometres) and reduce CO 2 emissions by 12.4 tonnes.  Fully electric container ships in Norway, Singapore While the company from China claims it is the biggest fully electric ship, it is not the first vessel of its kind to be launched, nor the first. In 2021, Norwegian company Yara launched the Yara Birkeland, “the world’s first autonomous, electric and zero-emission container vessel.” “With this vessel, Yara will remove 40,000 diesel-powered truck journeys every year, and reduce NOx (Nitrogen oxide) and CO 2 emissions , improve road safety, reduce road dust formation and traffic noise.  “The zero-emission vessel will transport mineral fertiliser from Yara’s production plant in Porsgrunn, Norway to the regional export port in Brevik,” the company said. Image source: Knut Brevik Andersen, Wilhelmsen Ship Service via Yara   Last March, the vessel completed its first-fully autonomous voyage, under human supervision, from Yara Porsgrunn to a container terminal in Brevik. “Tests will soon start on the Yara Birkeland’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) situational awareness system. The AI system controls how the ship navigates, based on decisions it makes on its surroundings, other ships, obstacles, or weather changes,” the company said. The vessel was initially slated to finish a two-year autonomy trial period by the end of 2024.  “This will culminate in the certification of autonomous operations. The trial period is still ongoing, with expectations that the ship will be close to completing the trial by early 2026,” the company said. Have you read? LNG for ship to start decarbonising shipping fuel In November last year, Singapore unveiled its first fully-electric cargo vessel. It was developed by Goal Zero, Yinson GreenTech and SeaTech Solutions. Image Source: Yinson Greentech The lightweight, 18.5m Hydromover is designed with swappable battery solutions and can carry up to 25 tonnes of cargo.  It generates zero emissions and can potentially reduce operational costs by up to 50% compared to conventional vessels due to improved energy efficiency and lower maintenance costs.

![Post thumbnail](https://www.esi-africa.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/cosco-shipping-main.jpeg) **China has launched what it claims to be the largest electric container ship with a 50,000kWh+ battery capacity.** Shanghai-headquartered China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) launched the 120 metres long, 24 metres wide and 10,000 ton Shipping Green Water 01 recently. ******[Enlit Africa returns to the CTICC from 19 to 21 May in 2026](https://share-eu1.hsforms.com/16FqcOXg0QsCqaN9qBsgtWwewv4c)****** The transportation and shipping company has offices in several countries, including in South Africa. Last March, the company said: “The 700 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) electric container ship is the world’s first large all-battery container ship for long-distance transport.” A second electric container ship by the company has also been in the works since May 2023. **Have you read? [Durban students to race solar boat at clean energy regatta in Monaco](https://www.esi-africa.com/renewable-energy/durban-students-to-race-solar-boat-at-clean-energy-regatta-in-monaco/)** ## Smart mobility on the water COSCO says the vessel carries an intelligent ship system consisting of integration platform, navigation, cabin and energy efficiency. “It is the world’s first electric container ship in terms of overall length, width, number of boxes, dwt (deadweight ton) and battery capacity. The ship adopts [battery](https://www.esi-africa.com/tag/battery-storage/)\-powered propulsion for the whole voyage.” ![](https://www.esi-africa.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/cosco-shipping-.jpeg) The Shipping Green Water 01 vessel. Image Source: COSCO The company says the total capacity of the battery is more than 50,000kWh. This can be renewed through the box-type mobile power supply, “a fixation of long charging time, low loading capacity and short range of the traditional electric container ship.” “It is expected that a single ship can reduce carbon dioxide emissions of 2,918 tonnes, equivalent to 2,035 family cars a year, or 160,000 trees.” **Have you read?** [**Making commercial case to use hydrogen in marine engines**](https://www.esi-africa.com/business-and-markets/making-commercial-case-to-use-hydrogen-in-marine-engines/) The vessel has so far been put to use on the Yangtze River, shipping cargo from Jiangsu to ports up to Shanghai. The route covers close to 1,000 kilometres without needing recharge. The container ship is expected to save 3,900 kilograms of fuel per 100 nautical miles (185.2 kilometres) and reduce CO2 emissions by 12.4 tonnes. ## Fully electric container ships in Norway, Singapore While the company from [China](https://www.esi-africa.com/tag/China/) claims it is the biggest fully electric ship, it is not the first vessel of its kind to be launched, nor the first. In 2021, Norwegian company Yara launched the Yara Birkeland, “the world’s first autonomous, electric and zero-emission container vessel.” “With this vessel, Yara will remove 40,000 diesel-powered truck journeys every year, and reduce NOx (Nitrogen oxide) and [CO2 emissions](https://www.esi-africa.com/tag/CO2-emissions/), improve road safety, reduce road dust formation and traffic noise. “The zero-emission vessel will transport mineral fertiliser from Yara’s production plant in Porsgrunn, Norway to the regional export port in Brevik,” the company said. ![](https://www.esi-africa.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/yara-birkeland.png) Image source: Knut Brevik Andersen, Wilhelmsen Ship Service via Yara Last March, the vessel completed its first-fully autonomous voyage, under human supervision, from Yara Porsgrunn to a container terminal in Brevik. “Tests will soon start on the Yara Birkeland’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) situational awareness system. The [AI](https://www.esi-africa.com/tag/AI/) system controls how the ship navigates, based on decisions it makes on its surroundings, other ships, obstacles, or weather changes,” the company said. The vessel was initially slated to finish a two-year autonomy trial period by the end of 2024. “This will culminate in the certification of autonomous operations. The trial period is still ongoing, with expectations that the ship will be close to completing the trial by early 2026,” the company said. **Have you read?** **[LNG for ship to start decarbonising shipping fuel](https://www.esi-africa.com/southern-africa/lng-for-ship-to-start-decarbonising-shipping-fuel/)** In November last year, Singapore unveiled its first fully-electric cargo vessel. It generates [zero emissions](https://www.esi-africa.com/tag/net-zero-emissions+/) and can potentially reduce operational costs by up to 50% compared to conventional vessels due to improved energy efficiency and lower maintenance costs.
