Overview
The Model Y has been a sales success since it first launched. From our standpoint, it's easy to see why. This small electric SUV boasts plenty of driving range, roomy seating, and lots of cargo space. It's also easy to drive, easy to charge and fun to drive. Oh, and the Model Y is attractively priced, too. For 2026, Tesla is building on that success with a heavily updated version of the Model Y. Many of these changes are similar to what Tesla did to its 2025 Model 3.

TESTED
Excellent
8.2
out of 10
We drove the 2026 Tesla Model Y on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a
year.
Driving experience
8.5
/10
How does the Tesla Model Y drive? The Tesla Model Y is an excellent choice for daily driving, offering smooth acceleration and impressive performance. The Long Range All-Wheel Drive model goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, outpacing competitors like the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Regenerative braking is strong, allowing you to slow down simply by lifting off the accelerator, and it performed well in emergency braking tests.
The ride is comfortable, even over bumpy roads, though the handling isn't as engaging as some rivals. Just as in the previous model, the small rear window limits rear visibility. But Tesla's advanced camera system and safety features can compensate. A standout feature is the Model Y's advanced driver aids, including Full Self-Driving (Supervised), which is capable of navigating city streets, stopping at lights, making turns, and changing lanes on its own. While drivers should remain attentive, Tesla's system sets a new standard for driving assistance.
Comfort
8
/10
View interior photos
How comfortable is the Tesla Model Y? The Model Y offers supportive and comfortable front seats with four-way lumbar adjustment, ensuring excellent lower back support for short trips or long drives. The driver's seat and steering column have ample adjustments, making it easy to find a comfortable driving position. Heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel work quickly and effectively.
Rear seats provide generous legroom for adults and enough space for large car seats, making it family-friendly. While accessing the lower LATCH anchors between the tight cushions can be tricky, the rear headrests are much easier to adjust, simplifying the tether routing. Up front, the dual-zone climate system is mostly intuitive and effective, with neat features like fan oscillation. Meanwhile, rear passengers can adjust vent direction using the new rear touchscreen. Noise insulation is great, and the cabin is pleasantly quiet whether on highways or city streets.
In-cabin tech
7.6
/10
How’s the tech? Tesla's Google-based navigation display is sleek and user-friendly, though it can lag in areas with poor service. It syncs seamlessly with Google Maps through the Tesla app, offering a solid alternative to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto at least in terms of navigation. The 16-speaker audio system provides great sound quality. The dual wireless phone chargers are helpful, and the rear touchscreen is a nice add-on for kids sitting in back. Not having Apple CarPlay or Android Auto can be a downside for people who like all their smartphone functions to work smoothly with their car. However, having built-in streaming options like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal and Audible is starting to make it less of a problem.
Storage & cargo
9.4
/10
How’s storage and cargo? The Model Y offers an impressive 33.1 cubic feet of storage, including a front trunk and hidden space under the rear load floor, surpassing the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV (14 cubic feet) and nearing the larger BMW iX (35.5 cubic feet). With power-folding rear seats that lie flat, it provides up to 76 cubic feet of space. It also features two center console compartments, carpet-lined door pockets, and a magnetic-closing glovebox. However, cupholders may not fit larger bottles, and there's no sunglasses holder. The Model Y also tows up to 3,500 pounds with a Tesla-approved tow hitch, outperforming rivals like the and Kia EV6 (2,300 pounds) and matching larger SUVs like the Cadillac Lyriq.
Value
8.4
/10
Is the Tesla Model Y a good value? Tesla's Model Y delivers a remarkable blend of sleek, upscale design and affordability. The latest iteration features notable improvements in build quality and a more polished interior, placing it in contention with some luxury vehicles. Priced at just over $60,000 for the fully loaded Launch Series, it offers outstanding value, combining an extensive array of features with a competitive price tag.
Tesla includes a standard four-year/50,000-mile warranty, plus an impressive eight-year/120,000-mile battery and drive unit warranty for long-range models, ensuring at least 70% battery capacity retention. The extensive Supercharger network remains a key advantage, offering easy, widespread access, though it's now being opened to other brands.
Range/Efficiency/Charging
7
/10
How are the range and efficiency? We tested the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD Launch Series with 19-inch wheels, offering an EPA-estimated range of 327 miles. In our Edmunds EV Range Test, it matched that estimate exactly, traveling 327 miles on a full charge. This range surpasses the range of rivals like the Ioniq 5 and Honda Prologue.
The Model Y is also highly efficient, consuming 26.8 kWh per 100 miles in our test, compared to the dual-motor Ioniq 5's 30.9 kWh per 100 miles. Lower energy use means greater efficiency, much like higher mpg for gas cars.
When it comes to charging, the Model Y supports fast charging of up to 250 kW, allowing it to regain 169 miles of range in just 15 minutes under optimal conditions, according to Tesla's estimates. In our Edmunds EV Charging Test, it recharged at a rate of 403 miles per hour, adding 100 miles in just under 15 minutes on average. While this performance is solid, it's fairly average when compared to other EVs on the market.
X factor
7
/10
The new Tesla Model Y is fast and a great choice for a dependable daily driver. We have mixed opinions on the updated front design, but the striking rear design is likely to garner more widespread approval. It also helps this new version stand out from all of the older Model Ys on the road.

2026 Tesla Model Y trim level differences
The 2026 Tesla Model Y is a fully electric small crossover SUV. Tesla initially sold it in the dual-motor all-wheel-drive
Launch Series
configuration. Soon after, Tesla introduced the Model Y
Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive
and
Long Range All-Wheel Drive
versions. Later in the model year, Tesla gave them new names:
Premium Rear-Wheel Drive
and
Premium All-Wheel Drive
. It also introduced the Model Y

, a new base version, and the Model Y
Performance
.
Compare the 2026 Tesla Model Y trim levels in-depth.
Which Model Y trim does Edmunds recommend?
We recommend getting the
Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive
(also called the
Premium Rear-Wheel Drive
). It provides the best combination of features and range for the price. But if you want extra traction for wintertime driving on snowy or icy roads, the Long Range All-Wheel Drive (also called the Premium All-Wheel Drive) is certainly the way to go.
Competitors to consider
Most major automakers now offer compact-to-midsize electric SUVs that serve as alternatives to the Y. The Chevy Equinox EV is a great value thanks to its Edmunds-tested 356 miles of range and low starting price. We're also fans of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which boasts super quick charging speeds and a retro design that looks handsome and distinctive. And the Ford Mustang Mach-E combines noteworthy performance with a usable, adult-friendly interior.
Edmunds spotlight: All the changes for the new 2026 Model Y
Called the New Model Y (and also known by Tesla's internal name, Juniper), the refreshed SUV is most recognizable by its redesigned headlights and taillights. These, plus new full-width accent lights, give the Model Y a distinctive look at night. The overall theme continues inside with new ambient lighting elements and a more extensive use of nicer-looking and -feeling materials. Ventilated front seats are finally available and rear passengers enjoy a new 8-inch touchscreen they can use to play games. Under-the-skin improvements include enhancements to reduce outside noise in the cabin and a retuned suspension that provides a smoother ride over bumps without diminishing the Model Y's traditionally sporty handling.

Second model Y
5 out of 5 stars
Dan P, 05/13/2025
2025 Tesla Model Y Long Range 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
This is my second model Y after 20 years of Volvos. I am not a car person. Driving a Tesla has changed how I drive and how I think about driving. The 2025 Y has a faster processor than my 2023 Y. This time I leased as technology is changing too fast. Also a lease of $300 a month is an amazing deal for such an all around fun car to drive. Only detractor is the firm drive.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2026 Tesla Model Y, so we've included review for other years of the Model Y since its last redesign.

## Overview

The Model Y has been a sales success since it first launched. From our standpoint, it's easy to see why. This small electric SUV boasts plenty of driving range, roomy seating, and lots of cargo space. It's also easy to drive, easy to charge and fun to drive. Oh, and the Model Y is attractively priced, too. For 2026, Tesla is building on that success with a heavily updated version of the Model Y. Many of these changes are similar to what Tesla did to its 2025 Model 3.

Excellent
8\.2
out of 10
We drove the 2026 Tesla Model Y on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
## Driving experience
**8\.5**/10

## Comfort
**8**/10

## In-cabin tech
**7\.6**/10

## Storage & cargo
**9\.4**/10

## Value
**8\.4**/10
Is the Tesla Model Y a good value? Tesla's Model Y delivers a remarkable blend of sleek, upscale design and affordability. The latest iteration features notable improvements in build quality and a more polished interior, placing it in contention with some luxury vehicles. Priced at just over \$60,000 for the fully loaded Launch Series, it offers outstanding value, combining an extensive array of features with a competitive price tag.

## Range/Efficiency/Charging
**7**/10

## X factor
**7**/10
The new Tesla Model Y is fast and a great choice for a dependable daily driver. We have mixed opinions on the updated front design, but the striking rear design is likely to garner more widespread approval. It also helps this new version stand out from all of the older Model Ys on the road.

## 2026 Tesla Model Y trim level differences
The 2026 Tesla Model Y is a fully electric small crossover SUV. Tesla initially sold it in the dual-motor all-wheel-drive **Launch Series** configuration. Soon after, Tesla introduced the Model Y **Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive** and **Long Range All-Wheel Drive** versions. Later in the model year, Tesla gave them new names: **Premium Rear-Wheel Drive** and **Premium All-Wheel Drive**. It also introduced the Model Y **Standard**, a new base version, and the Model Y **Performance**. [Compare the 2026 Tesla Model Y trim levels in-depth.](https://www.edmunds.com/tesla/model-y/2026/trims/)
## Which Model Y trim does Edmunds recommend?
We recommend getting the **Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive** (also called the **Premium Rear-Wheel Drive**). It provides the best combination of features and range for the price. But if you want extra traction for wintertime driving on snowy or icy roads, the Long Range All-Wheel Drive (also called the Premium All-Wheel Drive) is certainly the way to go.
## Competitors to consider
Most major automakers now offer compact-to-midsize electric SUVs that serve as alternatives to the Y. The Chevy Equinox EV is a great value thanks to its Edmunds-tested 356 miles of range and low starting price. We're also fans of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which boasts super quick charging speeds and a retro design that looks handsome and distinctive. And the Ford Mustang Mach-E combines noteworthy performance with a usable, adult-friendly interior.
## Edmunds spotlight: All the changes for the new 2026 Model Y
## What’s it like to live with?
Edmunds' test team has purchased a 2026 Model Y as part of its One-Year Road Test program. Our editors are driving and living with the Model Y for a year and about 20,000 miles to get an in-depth take on Model Y ownership. Second model Y

Also a lease of \$300 a month is an amazing deal for such an all around fun car to drive.

## Edmunds Expert Rating
edmunds TESTED
Excellent
8\.2
out of 10
We drove the 2026 Tesla Model Y on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
## Driving experience
**8\.5**/10
## Comfort
**8**/10

## In-cabin tech
**7\.6**/10
## Storage & cargo
**9\.4**/10
## Value
## Range/Efficiency/Charging
**7**/10
## X factor
**7**/10
The new Tesla Model Y is fast and a great choice for a dependable daily driver. We have mixed opinions on the updated front design, but the striking rear design is likely to garner more widespread approval. It also helps this new version stand out from all of the older Model Ys on the road.

## Buying Tips for the 2026 Tesla Model Y for April
Here are some buying and negotiating tips for the 2026 Tesla Model Y:
- New Tesla Model Y vehicles can only be purchased online from the manufacturer since Tesla does not have dealer franchises.
- The True Market Value for all Model Y trims aligns with the MSRP, indicating that buyers are generally paying full sticker price.
- If you're considering a used Model Y, you'll find a decent selection with 375 vehicles available nationwide. Most trims sell in days ranging from 8 to 21 on average, meaning they move quickly and leave less room for negotiation.

Dan P, 05/13/2025
2025 Tesla Model Y Long Range 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
This is my second model Y after 20 years of Volvos. I am not a car person. Driving a Tesla has changed how I drive and how I think about driving. The 2025 Y has a faster processor than my 2023 Y. This time I leased as technology is changing too fast. Also a lease of \$300 a month is an amazing deal for such an all around fun car to drive. Only detractor is the firm drive.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2026 Tesla Model Y, so we've included review for other years of the Model Y since its last redesign.
