| Boilerpipe Text | Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae defended their men’s doubles title at the YONEX All England with an 18-21 21-12 21-19 win over Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
Played in a febrile atmosphere, Kim and Seo were not able to stop the noise and Chia and Soh charged to the opening game.
They soon levelled and then claimed victory in a thrilling final set to become two-time champions in Birmingham.
After a semi-final Saturday chock full of three-setters, Sunday’s four finals preceding the men’s doubles’ had been won in straight games.
None of them had lacked drama, and each result had a significant impact on the world order in those disciplines and the countries the victors hailed from.
But it felt only right that at least one showpiece match went the distance, and the men’s doubles finals delivered.
The Malaysian fans had been waiting all day for something or someone to cheer, and so it fell to Chia and Soh to put on a show.
As both pairs played their way into the match, they each went on runs of five consecutive points, only to mean the game returned time and again to things been all square.
But slowly, Chia and Soh widened their lead as they did not try to nullify Kim and Seo’s innumerable advantages, but rather play to their strengths, which is supreme power and speed mixed up into one firecracker.
With three straight points, Chia and Soh took the opening game as the crowd reached a fever pitch.
Kim and Seo knew they had to do something to quieten the Malaysia fans, and as they built out a commanding lead, the cries of 'Malaysia Boleh' started to dissipate.
Because just as Chia and Soh had come out firing with their barn-storming, oppresive style, Kim and Seo levelled the match with their calm, disciplined approach.
It still remained to be seen what would triumph eventually, even as Chia and Soh built an early lead in the decider.
A four-point advantage at the interval of the third game felt significant, and a 12-7 lead even more so, but Kim and Seo came back to level the game as nerves started to creep in for the second seeds.
A crucial challenge from the Koreans saw an out call overturned and meant they levelled again at 16-16, before pushing on to win the next two points.
And eventually, up came match point, with three opportunities to get it.
One went past them thanks to a Soh smash, before another was saved by the Malaysian pair.
But eventually, they triumphed before dropping to their knees to take in their achievement.
"Our words have become the reality, I am so pleased to have the trophy in my hands again. I didn't think we would be able to do it again," Kim said.
Seo said: "When I started playing badminton, I didn't think I would have these back-to-back titles at the All England, it was beyond my imagination.
"There are lots of achievements I want to make true in my career, and it feels great to be able to have this title again. And having back-to-back titles boosts my confidence with upcoming tournaments."
Chia and Soh were left to lick their wounds after a third defeat in the YONEX All England final, the second one to go to a deciding game.
Soh said: "We are glad to push our limits in today's game and push the world number ones.
"We knew we could win today, but at some crucial moments, we made some mistakes that cost us to lose the game. We will take this experience and keep going."
Chia added: "We don't really think a lot on court, we just focus on what we need to do, what our gameplan is and we fix on it.
"We have to be focussed on strategy and it was just errors at crucial times that went against us." |
