Image: Apple Apple has announced its latest lineup of smartphones, the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro. It features two cameras, including an upgraded ultra-wide model, and retains the Camera Control button from the previous generation. iPhone 17 Pro Image: Apple The company says it designed the iPhone 17 Pro "from scratch." It now features an aluminium frame, rather than a titanium one. Recent Videos While the main and ultra wide cameras appear to have been untouched, the telephoto camera has gotten an upgrade, making it so all three rear cameras are now 48MP. Previously, the telephoto camera was only 12MP . Perhaps more importantly, the sensor has around 56% more area as well: it's now 23.5mm² compared to the iPhone 16 Pro's 15.3mm² telephoto sensor. Image: Apple The larger sensor comes at the cost of a little less reach; the iPhone 16 Pro's telephoto camera was a "5x" 120mm equiv., while the 17 Pro's is a 4x 100mm equiv. model. However, the company uses the extra resolution to provide an 8x mode, taken from a center crop of the telephoto camera's sensor, similar to the 2x mode for the main camera. iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max Focal length Pixel count Sensor size f/number Crop factor Main (24mm equiv.) 48MP Type 1/1.28 (71.5mm²) F1.78 ~3.5x Ultra wide (13mm equiv) 48MP Type 1/2.55 (23.5mm²) F2.2 ~6.2x Telephoto (100mm equiv) 48MP Type 1/2.55 (23.5mm²) F2.8 ~6.2x The new front-facing camera lets you take landscape selfies without having to turn your phone. Image: Apple The phone also gets a new F1.9 "Center Stage" selfie camera, which Apple says is twice as large as the previous model. While the company is a bit cagey on details, the iPhone 16 had a Type 1/3.6 sensor, which was around 12mm². Presumably, this means the new camera is around 24mm². It's also now 18MP, up from 12, and is square rather than 4:3, letting users take landscape selfies without having to rotate their phone. This isn't the first time we've seen this approach; GoPro has been doing something similar since the Hero 11 Black. On the video side, the iPhone 17 Pro can now record in ProRes Raw, which Apple says will provide even more room to edit your footage in post. You can't shoot with the codec in the standard camera app, but it's available in the Final Cut Camera and BlackMagic Camera app. Apple has also worked with BlackMagic to create a dock for the phone, which adds Genlock support. Image: Apple The phone is powered by the A19 Pro SOC, which Apple says is now attached to a newly-designed vapor chamber, designed to keep the chip performing well without making the phone uncomfortably hot to hold. It moves heat away from the back of the phone and spreads it out across the aluminum frame. Under that heatsink, the A19 Pro features 16 GPU cores, and the company says it should provide up to 40% better performance than the processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro. It features what Apple says is the "biggest battery in any iPhone," which can power up to 33 hours of video playback on the regular-sized model, and 39 hours on the Pro Max. The 17 Pro will start at $1099 with 256GB of storage. That's a de facto $100 bump in price compared to the base 16 Pro, which came with 128GB of storage, though it's less than the 256GB iPhone 16 Pro. The Pro Max starts at $1199 for a 256GB model, and is available with up to 2TB of storage. iPhone 17 Image: Apple The iPhone 17's camera setup has been improved, with the ultra-wide camera being upgraded to use a 48MP sensor, rather than a 12MP one. The phone will also now default to 24MP output files, rather than 12MP ones. It also gets the upgraded Center Stage selfie camera found in the Pro. iPhone 17 Focal length Pixel count Sensor size f/number Crop factor Main (26mm equiv.) 48MP Type 1/1.56 (48mm²) F1.6 ~4.3x Ultra wide (13mm equiv) 48MP Type 1/2.55 (23.5mm²) F2.2 ~6.2x The phone's main camera appears to be the same 48MP model used by its predecessor, with the ability to crop in to the center region for a 2x zoom. The display is bigger, but there's no longer a larger option. Image: Apple The iPhone 17 has a 6.3" display (compared to the 16's 6.1" model) with a 3000 nit peak brightness and "ProMotion," meaning it can run at 120Hz, rather than 60. It uses an adaptive refresh rate, so it doesn't spend a ton of power refreshing the screen while nothing's happening. The company has done away with the "Plus" model, which featured a 6.7" display. The 17 comes with a new processor, the A19, which Apple says is substantially more power efficient than the A18. It starts with 256GB of storage, double what the iPhone 16 started with. The phone starts at $799, the same as its predecessor. Apple also announced the iPhone 17 Air, a thinner and lighter model than its more typical offerings. You can check out our story about it here .

It features two cameras, including an upgraded ultra-wide model, and retains the Camera Control button from the previous generation. ## iPhone 17 Pro | | |---| | [![iPhone-17-Pro-rear-panel-and-cameras](https://2.img-dpreview.com/files/p/E~TS590x0~articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-Pro-rear-panel-and-cameras.jpeg)](https://www.dpreview.com/files/p/articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-Pro-rear-panel-and-cameras.jpeg) | | *Image: Apple* | The company says it designed the iPhone 17 Pro "from scratch." It now features an aluminium frame, rather than a titanium one. Recent Videos While the main and ultra wide cameras appear to have been untouched, the telephoto camera has gotten an upgrade, making it so all three rear cameras are now 48MP. Previously, the [telephoto camera was only 12MP](https://www.dpreview.com/news/8163093616/iphone-16-pro-worth-upgrading-13-14-15-apple-cameras). Perhaps more importantly, the sensor has around 56% more area as well: it's now 23.5mm² compared to the iPhone 16 Pro's 15.3mm² telephoto sensor. | | |---| | [![iPhone-17-Pro-camera-array](https://3.img-dpreview.com/files/p/E~TS590x0~articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-Pro-camera-array.jpeg)](https://www.dpreview.com/files/p/articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-Pro-camera-array.jpeg) | | *Image: Apple* | The larger sensor comes at the cost of a little less reach; the iPhone 16 Pro's telephoto camera was a "5x" 120mm equiv., while the 17 Pro's is a 4x 100mm equiv. model. However, the company uses the extra resolution to provide an 8x mode, taken from a center crop of the telephoto camera's sensor, similar to the 2x mode for the main camera. | iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max | | | | | |---|---|---|---|---| | Focal length | Pixel count | Sensor size | f/number | Crop factor | | Main (24mm equiv.) | 48MP | Type 1/1.28 (71.5mm²) | F1.78 | ~3.5x | | Ultra wide (13mm equiv) | 48MP | Type 1/2.55 (23.5mm²) | F2.2 | ~6.2x | | Telephoto (100mm equiv) | 48MP | Type 1/2.55 (23.5mm²) | F2.8 | ~6.2x | | | |---| | [![iPhone-17-front-camera-center-stage-in-action](https://1.img-dpreview.com/files/p/E~TC4x3S590x0~articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-front-camera-center-stage-in-action.jpeg)](https://www.dpreview.com/files/p/articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-front-camera-center-stage-in-action.jpeg) | | The new front-facing camera lets you take landscape selfies without having to turn your phone. *Image: Apple* | The phone also gets a new F1.9 "Center Stage" selfie camera, which Apple says is twice as large as the previous model. | | |---| | [![iPhone-17-Pro-features-and-specifications](https://2.img-dpreview.com/files/p/E~TS590x0~articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-Pro-features-and-specifications.jpeg)](https://www.dpreview.com/files/p/articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-Pro-features-and-specifications.jpeg) | | *Image: Apple* | The phone is powered by the A19 Pro SOC, which Apple says is now attached to a newly-designed vapor chamber, designed to keep the chip performing well without making the phone uncomfortably hot to hold. The 17 Pro will start at \$1099 with 256GB of storage. That's a *de facto* \$100 bump in price compared to the base 16 Pro, which came with 128GB of storage, though it's less than the 256GB iPhone 16 Pro. The Pro Max starts at \$1199 for a 256GB model, and is available with up to 2TB of storage. ## iPhone 17 | | |---| | [![iPhone-17-colors-with-ceramic-shield-2](https://1.img-dpreview.com/files/p/E~TS590x0~articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-colors-with-ceramic-shield-2.jpeg)](https://www.dpreview.com/files/p/articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-colors-with-ceramic-shield-2.jpeg) | | *Image: Apple* | The iPhone 17's camera setup has been improved, with the ultra-wide camera being upgraded to use a 48MP sensor, rather than a 12MP one. The phone will also now default to 24MP output files, rather than 12MP ones. It also gets the upgraded Center Stage selfie camera found in the Pro. | iPhone 17 | | | | | |---|---|---|---|---| | Focal length | Pixel count | Sensor size | f/number | Crop factor | | Main (26mm equiv.) | 48MP | Type 1/1.56 (48mm²) | F1.6 | ~4.3x | | Ultra wide (13mm equiv) | 48MP | Type 1/2.55 (23.5mm²) | F2.2 | ~6.2x | The phone's main camera appears to be the same 48MP model used by its predecessor, with the ability to crop in to the center region for a 2x zoom. | | |---| | [![iPhone-17-front-and-back-cameras](https://2.img-dpreview.com/files/p/E~TC4x3S590x0~articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-front-and-back-cameras.jpeg)](https://www.dpreview.com/files/p/articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-front-and-back-cameras.jpeg) | | The display is bigger, but there's no longer a larger option. *Image: Apple* | The iPhone 17 has a 6.3" display (compared to the 16's 6.1" model) with a 3000 nit peak brightness and "ProMotion," meaning it can run at 120Hz, rather than 60. The phone starts at \$799, the same as its predecessor. *** Apple also announced the iPhone 17 Air, a thinner and lighter model than its more typical offerings. Modern cameraphones, however, use tele-sensors of the 1/1.4"-type, which are approximately 300% larger in area size than the iPhone sensor. In other words: when it comes to tele-sensors, the iPhone 17 pro is 2 generations behind the competition. Physically, it is inferior in every department when compared to the best flagship cameraphones. Please note that this concerns only the physical dimensions of the sensors and not the quality of the image processing pipeline. Samsung has a bigger physical sensor but then crams in 4x as many pixels, meaning each pixel is much smaller. Came out in 2019, which seems like a different age now. In the phone photography space, I might as well been shooting on a twin reflex camera. Changed batteries two times, no cracked screens so far. But lightning is becoming annoying and my main camera module are missing focus (I assume the OIS has started malfunctioning) There seems to be a bigger and bigger crowd saying "I don't need to upgrade". And I would agree. Of course upgrading every 1-2 years is silly - by my standards at least. 6 generations of iPhones is a nice enough jump for me. USB-C, 48mpx sensors, LiDAR and a nicer cooling system will be great fun I am sure. The 120hz screen, 5G, WiFi7, magsafe, smaller notch are alright but i could truly say they are not needed. Enjoy your tech people - don't give into the marketing hype. See you at iPhone 23 Pro \! I still have one that I use as a dedicated monitor for the Pocket 3. It's small, thin, smooth and light with a flush camera and rounded corners. This is a phone that's nice to hold and put in your pocket. This new pro phone looks like its made of Lego and I'm sure is fairly heavy. With the current trajectory, I feel like we may be discussing whether or not phones are "pocketable" ten years from now. 😂 Like 1 7 months ago[permalink](https://www.dpreview.com/news/2604105544/apple-iphone-17-pro-announcement?comment=4878013155) [nickolas84](https://www.dpreview.com/members/2536745923) Regarding the tele lens on the Pro models: the actual aperture is exactly the same between the 16pro and 17pro (lens MM and sensor size is different in a way that cancel one out, f/2.8 in both cases) So diffraction is the same... and surely this is a diffraction limited system. As a matter of fact in the 16Pro it was around diffraction limit and now at 48MP in the 17Pro it is well past that. Apple’s marketing loves to blur the line between optical zoom and digital trickery. True optical zoom requires physical lens movement, glass elements shifting to change focal length. What they’re doing here is using a high-resolution sensor to crop in digitally and then slapping the word “optical” on it like it’s a designer label. It’s clever branding, not engineering. The result might look decent thanks to computational photography, but it’s still a crop. Honestly, if Apple ever sells a potato and calls it a “smart starch-based imaging assistant,” I wouldn’t be surprised. But I will argue that 99% of people no longer care that they're being exposed to deceptive marketing. They only care about the end result, and you conceded that the end result "might look decent". That's all that matters to consumers these days. For folks like you and me, we'll have to stick to "real" cameras. There is a reason I carry my GR III around with me all the time. There is a discernable difference in image quality even if others around me don't notice it. In 2024 alone 94% of all photographs taken in the world (1.9 trillion in 2024 and expected to reach 2.1 trillion in 2025) were taken with smartphones. In social media alone, 14 billion images are shared daily. Yes, daily. So, that 94% of photographs taken with smartphones will likely increase, and the consumers around the world don't care much about the box that took the photo; they care about what they are seeing, perfect or not. I love my cameras and use them almost on a daily basis, but reality is reality. This battle has been lost to smartphones for 99%+ of the world's population. They love their smartphones and there's no stopping them. However, as others have pointed out, most consumers probably don’t care about or fully understand this distinction. That said, knowledge is power. Understanding how these cameras work allows knowledgeable users to get the best possible results from such cameras, should they choose to use them. They ONLY care about the images that they get. When “marketing nonsense” runs headlong into technical purists, there is always a collision, regardless of industry or product. Apple will sell hundreds of millions of these phones to people who look at the result of the cameras and the “flexibility” that they have and they will enjoy the product. 10,000 purists will be upset and decide to not buy the camera. And for most people the differences in image quality are not very discernable. The GR IV image quality will be very similar to the GR III. You can look at GR III sample photos to get an idea of what you'd be getting. To me, there is something that feels much more organic about photos taken with my GR III than my iPhone. It's almost like the difference between a video clip made with AI versus a real video. Something just feels off... The GR shooting experience is miles and miles ahead of using an iPhone imo. All of the controls are so thoughtfully laid out. You can truly use the GR one handed. Getting your photos to your phone is pretty quick and painless, too with Ricoh's app. If taking photos is something you're wanting to get back into, the GR IV will be the perfect camera for you to take with you everywhere. I find that I'm documenting my life much more with my GR III. Can’t understand why no-one is doing this. It would TRANSFORM the video quality you get from a phone. And Apple could automate it all and market it as cinematic, etc., taking all the calculations and thought out of it. What’s the hold-up? Surely there are people at Apple fighting for this development? Adding an internal ND filters for millions upon millions of phones would be a total waste as most buyers can't be bothered with such technological intricacies. Even if you pointed them at their phone having ND filters, they would probably try it once and forget it exists. I am sure it's a similar case on something like the Fujifilm X100VI, popular with the genZ crowd. Most of them who are not photo hobbyists/pro's do not take full advantage of the ND filters because they aren't so technically savvy. Even though to us it seems easy and straightforward. I am glad Fuji includes them, that camera really nailed internal ND's. But Apple could automate all that. At least 180-degree shutter at the touch of button (as they already do with the fake background blur). The variable ND filter is the missing piece to enable that. Consider that iPhones have a “Cinematic” option in the camera app, but it’s far from cinematic to have vehicle wheels spinning backward, flickering lights and screens, and birds leaping off telephone poles in a staccato 24 fps slide show – problems cured by an ND filter. Yes, you can rig an iPhone to use ND filters. But then you may as well rig a real camera. Those who understand what's actually happening can weight the pros and cons of shooting in crop mode, and those who don't understand the difference probably don't care anyway. My OnePlus 12 has the main lens and a 3x telephoto, but I often use the 2x crop-zoom from the main lens when I want an in-between zoom, and don't need perfect image quality. For example, my wife asks me to send her a picture of the grocery list, I will probably use the 2x zoom. Fill it with ads because it will get a lot of traffic. Apple and others will take notice and strive to be high on this list. The 100mm telephoto lens on this phone has an equivalent aperture of f/17.4. I just tried taking a pic on my full frame Canon R6 70-200mm with those specs. Yikes. Very little background blur. I guess I have to stick to the 24mm main sensor for portraits still. I hate that focal length for portraits. My Samsung T7 Shield allows around 800 megabyte per second sustained writing without problems. You’d probably not need more than some 200-300 megabyte/second - give or take guess - or thereabout for ProRES 422HQ or RAW at maximum speed on the iPhone 17 Pro (Max). That’ll expand the options a bit. ProRES 422HQ up to 60 fps in 4K is no problem on iPhone 15 Pro (Max) or later. My iPhone 15 Pro has 256GByte (around half always kept free), and handles 25 fps 4k ProRES 422 internally without problems for 25 minutes or so. If I use Cinema P3 (same settings, but 200 megabit/sec h265 4:2:2), I usually can handle recordings for approx. 80 minutes internally. Just mentioned as examples from daily use on my iPhone 15 Pro 256 GB - used extensively since release in 2023 nearly two years ago. The two extra - linear - bits really deliver a visible difference in flexibility on top of standard RAW white balance and ISO adjustment in post. These are really, really valuable options, not supported in any matching way using 10-bit Log. Especially when delivering rendered 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 2020 HLG broadcast ready material, with the far wider Rec.2020 color space compared to the usual Rec.709 used for Log (Apple also uses the larger 2020 colorspace for log as default). It actually matters. Better “wiggle room” in post. Real life tests will soon crop up, and I certainly will compare results to my Lumix S5 and other cameras, that require the not really travel friendly Ninja V with a large NP-F970 battery or heavy powerbanks connected, as well as cables. Every little bit helps, I'll go along with that. But it's still phone video. Apple fan bois gonna fan boi. The large, fancy screen on my Android (or your iPhone) may also be used as an external monitor for whatever camera I am using. So the phone would still be quite useful in a video environment. I think I'd rather use it for that than for actual video acquisition. I was saying the same thing when the previous iPhone came out and the term 'optical zoom' was being bandied about. So.. when Fuji uses a cropped region from the center of an X-100VI or GFX-100RF sensor, it's cropping-yet when Apple does it, it's ..optical zoom. If there aren't optical lens elements being moved to place a longer focal length image onto the full sensor surface area, then it is \*digital zoom.\* Like 4 7 months ago[permalink](https://www.dpreview.com/news/2604105544/apple-iphone-17-pro-announcement?comment=5789104552) [![Edgar\_in\_Indy]()](https://www.dpreview.com/members/2346611173) [Edgar\_in\_Indy](https://www.dpreview.com/members/2346611173) Maybe they could start calling it a "Bespoke zoom" instead. That is, a complex folded optical path zoom, however ingeniously packaged won't be better than a software enhanced crop and pixel re-map. They are probably right. I’m sure that isn’t a coincidence. So ‘reach’ performance should be practically identical despite the added flexibility of a shorter tele and less jarring gap between main and tele fields of view. So much of my phone photography uses focal lengths in between those extremes. That is one reason I have little inclination to replace my (admittedly adequate) 12 "Pro". I'm really surprised they are continuing with this focal length selection, to be honest, especially as they are hanging on to the far less useful ultra-wide. Weird. But at least 4× is better than 5×. I think Apple is caught between two classes of users with the tele specs. On the one hand, you have people serious about their photos and video, like many of us here at DPReview. We mostly want a lower ‘zoom’ factor to close the yawning gap between 24 mm-e and the tele camera, but with the largest possible sensor and lowest possible f-number in the (tiny) available space. On the other hand, if you go to non-photography tech sites like Ars Technica, users seem very interested in the longest possible ‘zoom’, with less understanding of the downsides. So they’re clamouring for more ‘zoom’. One other problem for Apple is that the tele lens really must have a substantial ‘zoom’ factor to beat a crop from the main camera, since the main camera sensor is so much larger. Why not make the tele sensor much larger too then? Good question. I guess the space constraints are even worse than they seem at first glance. The ultra-wide seems identical to the old iPhone 16 Pro, and the tele is only 56% larger. Main camera sensor is also identical to the old one, but that was already big as you note. What has nearly doubled in size is the front-facing camera sensor, which is additionally now square. But clearly (because it’s square) it is never used all at once, so that exaggerates the improvement (though there are other improvements to the front camera). It’s incremental improvement rather than revolution, but that has been true of all cameras for many years now. A low-hanging fruit that Apple still refuses to pick: built-in variable ND filter. Baffling omission to this layperson. That doesn't do much for me, but for most of the young people I know, the selfie camera gets a lot of use, so any upgrade there is good. Overall, the improvements seem to be incremental, but still very decent for a year-to-year release. Especially since we're talking about Apple, a company that usually skimps on hardware (other than their processor I suppose). My OnePlus 12 from last year uses uses a 1/2.0" sensor and an f/2.6 lens for telephoto, but the newest Oppo uses a 1/1.56" @ f/2.1, and the best Vivo has a 1/1.4" @ f/2.3. My family did have an IBM PCjr though, which was a bit of a strange duck, but also forward-thinking in some ways. It could play three sound channels at once, which was two more channels than any other IBM PC at the time, lol. It also had enhanced CGA graphics that could display 16 colors on the screen, instead of just four. It could also accept cartridges, like a console, it had a wireless keyboard, and it could accept various upgrade modules on the side. Ours had a 128KB memory module on the side, bringing total RAM to 256KB. The first game I remember playing on it was King's Quest I when I was about 10. I was so impressed, ha ha. I'm not eager to own a bigger phone, but I think that something along the lines of a 17 Pro (or 18 pro or 19 pro or whatever) is going to be in my future for one primary reason. My old RX100 is on its last legs and I'm not interested in spending \$1700 on the only remaining RX100 model currently available. Mine is the original with a 28-100 equivalent lens, so a phone that does a good job in that range will probably end up replacing compact digicams at some point. The 12 & 13 minis probably sold well, but might have been the lowest volume iPhones. Or, as likely, Apple concluded that people would buy the more expensive regular iPhones if they couldn't get Minis, so profits would go up, and SKUs would go down. Sales were reportedly a low-single-figure percentage of total iPhone sales, with the 13 mini doing even worse than the 12 mini despite what I thought were strong upgrades at the time. I speak as a forlorn 13 mini owner. Samsung has already sold more wildly expensive folding phones than Apple sold mini phones in total. Puts things in perspective. I have one German friend who loved her 12 mini. Otherwise I have never even knowingly seen one in the wild, aside from the one in my pocket. It basically doesn’t exist. However, the company uses the extra resolution to provide an 8x mode, taken from a center crop of the telephoto camera's sensor, similar to the 2x mode for the main camera. | iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max | | | | | |---|---|---|---|---| | Focal length | Pixel count | Sensor size | f/number | Crop factor | | Main (24mm equiv.) | 48MP | Type 1/1.28 (71.5mm²) | F1.78 | ~3.5x | | Ultra wide (13mm equiv) | 48MP | Type 1/2.55 (23.5mm²) | F2.2 | ~6.2x | | Telephoto (100mm equiv) | 48MP | Type 1/2.55 (23.5mm²) | F2.8 | ~6.2x | | | |---| | [![iPhone-17-front-camera-center-stage-in-action](https://1.img-dpreview.com/files/p/E~TC4x3S590x0~articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-front-camera-center-stage-in-action.jpeg)](https://www.dpreview.com/files/p/articles/2604105544/iPhone-17-front-camera-center-stage-in-action.jpeg) | | The new front-facing camera lets you take landscape selfies without having to turn your phone. *Image: Apple* | The phone also gets a new F1.9 "Center Stage" selfie camera, which Apple says is twice as large as the previous model. The phone starts at \$799, the same as its predecessor. *** Apple also announced the iPhone 17 Air, a thinner and lighter model than its more typical offerings.
