| Boilerpipe Text | There's perhaps no more engrossing a TV-viewing experience than settling down with a good crime (ideally a murder) to solve. You can keep your action thrillers and your tortured-cop-reconicles-the-darkness-within noirs. What we're looking at here are puzzles that can be solved if you keep your wits about you and pay attention to the clues.
So get your deerstalkers on and start following the breadcrumbs…
1. Ludwig (BBC iPlayer)
BBC
John Taylor (David Mitchell) is the classic introvert, afraid of social interaction, freaked out by the world outside his window. He publishes puzzle books under the pen name “Ludwig”, but when his identical twin brother (who is in fact his polar opposite) goes missing, he assumes his identity and pretends to be DCI James Taylor, a detective in the Cambridge Police Force.
Using his exceptional puzzle-solving skills, John is able to use James' identity and resources to work out what happened to his brother while also working as a policeman.
The fabulous Anna Maxwell Martin plays his bereft and bemused sister-in-law.
2. Prime Suspect (ITVX)
ITV/Shutterstock
In an uphill battle to prove herself in a male-dominated industry, DCI Jane Tennison’s ambition and talent make her a target to her colleagues. Each season takes on a new case (except season four, which experimented with multiple, episodic cases), each of them exploring wider social issues through the lens of Tennison's experience on the force.
Guest stars over the years included a young Ralph Fiennes in his screen debut, Peter Capaldi as a trans woman, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, Danny Dyer, Tom Wilkinson and Zoe Wanamaker.
3. Midsomer Murders (ITVX)
ITV
Since 1997,
Midsomer Murders
has aired over 138 episodes, mking it perhaps the definitive ITV crime drama.
DCI Tom Barnaby – and later, his cousin John Barnaby – investigate a series of murders in the charming and picturesque surroundings of Midsomer – a collection of villages somewhere round Somerset or Dorset or Hampshire or the 1980s. (Joke.)
While some of the crimes are more realistic than others (there's a special place in our hearst for the episode where Martine McCutcheon was crushed to death by a wheel of cheese), realism isn't the point.
Midsomer Murders
is cosy crime – the original and best.
4. Only Murders in the Building (Disney+)
Hulu
An ageing TV actor (Steve Martin), a delusional theatre producer (Martin Short) and their young neighbour (Selena Gomez) in the swanky Arconia building in New York’s Upper West Side all share an obsession for true crime. Or so they learn when there's murder in the building, and the three come together to investigate the crime while – naturally – making a podcast about it.
Essentially light-hearted, warm and never slow-paced,
OMITB
is a delightful murder-flavoured soufflé.
5. Unforgotten (ITV)
ITV
If you love a slow-burn mystery that keeps you guessing until the very last moment,
 Unforgotten
needs to be at the top of your watchlist. ITV’s award-winning crime drama dives into decades-old cold cases, reopening them when new evidence comes to light.
Originally led by Nicola Walker’s DCI Cassie Stuart, each series unravels a fresh investigation, and with it, the long-buried secrets of everyone involved. As the detectives piece together the truth, we’re drawn deep into the personal lives of both the suspects and the police, making every revelation hit that little bit harder. Gripping, emotional and compelling, it’s no wonder this one has such a loyal fan base.
6. Vera (ITV)
STUART WOOD
//
ITV
A good whodunnit needs a striking location, and Vera has absolutely made the most of its Northumberland setting – you can expect windswept coastlines, witty dialogue and a brilliantly sharp detective at the helm in the form of Brenda Blethyn's Vera.
Each episode delivers a gripping standalone mystery, complete with emotional backstories and plenty of twists along the way. For fans of crime dramas, this is Sunday-night viewing at its very finest!
7. Stay Close (Netflix)
Netflix
From master of suspense Harlan Coben came this slick Netflix thriller, which follows three people (played by James Nesbitt, Cush Jumbo and Coben stalwart Richard Armitage) whose lives are turned upside down when a shocking disappearance reopens old wounds from an cold case.
As long-hidden truths begin to surface, identities blur and loyalties are tested as the past returns to haunt the present. With plenty of gasp-out-loud twists and a storyline that keeps you guessing, this is pure binge-watch territory for if you love your whodunnits fast-paced and full of suspense.
8. Silent Witness (BBC iPlayer)
BBC
Forensic science meets compelling storytelling in this hugely popular whodunnit drama. Originally starring Amanda Burton, with William Gaminara and Tom Ward in support, the format and cast were so strong that it survived Burton's departure, gaining new regulars in Emilia Fox and later Liz Carr, David Caves and Richard Lintern after Gaminara and Ward moved on.
Now in its 29th season, the show goes beyond the cases and explores the relationships between the team members as their personal lives are often just as complicated as the crimes they’re solving. Gripping viewing for anyone who loves a smart, character-driven drama.
9. Broadchurch (ITVX)
ITV
There's nothing unique about
Broadchurch
: there's a shocking murder in an idyllic British coastal town, an ensemble of characters and a pair of detectives. It's just that it did all of that
so well
. (
"The best I've ever seen,"
according to more than one reviewer.) National treasures David Tennant and Olivia Colman are our investigators Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller – he's an outsider, she's local – alongside townsfolk Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Jonathan Bailey and Vicky McClure.
As fingers begin to point and suspicions loom amongst friends and neighbours, the emotional fallout proves just as shocking as the investigation itself.
10. Get Millie Black (C4)
Channel 4
Meet Millie-Jean Black, a police detective who quits Scotland Yard to return home to Jamaica, where she is soon pursuing a missing persons case while also trying to smooth over the cracks in her relationship with her sister, a trans woman living on the streets of Kingston.
As you'd expect from a writer with the pedigree of Booker-prize winning Marlon James, this is a drama where tension builds and delivers an experience rich in both emotion and intrigue.
