It’s been almost a year since
George Floyd
was killed after Minneapolis police officers pinned him to the ground and Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for at least eight minutes. These actions were caught on tape and shared widely, igniting protests against racism and police brutality across the globe in the summer of 2020. The jury in the trail against Chauvin delivered a guilty verdict Tuesday on the three charges against him. (Chauvin was
charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter
.)
The judge previously refused a defense request to sequester this jury
after police shot and killed 20-year-old Daunte Wright at a traffic stop nearby in Minneapolis on Sunday. New protests demanding justice for Wright are now taking place in Minnesota as
police chief Tim Gannon told reporters
Wright’s murder was “accidental.”
Both Floyd’s and Wright’s deaths are among additional acts of police brutality against Black people, including the killings of
Jacob Blake
,
Ahmaud Arbery
,
Breonna Taylor
, Tony McDade, and
Elijah McClain
, all of whom were honored during last summer’s protests.
If you feel helpless, confused, angry, or fired up, there are actions you can take right now to demand justice. Here’s how you can help:
Contact Government Officials
Chauvin, the officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck, was just found guilty of the murder of George Floyd. The three other cops—
Tou Thao, Thomas Lane, and J. Alexander Kueng
—are charged with
aiding and abetting second-degree murder
.
Kueng
and
Lane are currently out on bail
. Call Mayor Frey at 612-673-2100 or email him at CitizenInfo@Hennepin.us to let him know you demand justice and that these officers continue to be held accountable.
And don’t forget to contact Hennepin County attorney Mike Freeman at 612-348-5550 to demand all the officers involved in Floyd’s murder are held accountable by the law.
The ACLU even pre-wrote scripts you can use
so you don’t have to worry about what to say, and the
NAACP made this easy form to contact your congressional officials
to advocate for criminal justice reform.

Color of Change’s petition
calling on Mayor Frey to block the Minneapolis officers in George Floyd’s killing from receiving their pensions or becoming officers again.
Change.org’s petition
also calls on the officers involved in Floyd’s death to be held accountable. Nineteen million people have signed it, and it is still open even though the officers have been charged. Continue to make your voice heard.
Two of the officers involved in
Breonna Taylor’s death
(
John Mattingly and
Myles Cosgrove
) remain free.
Brett Hankison was charged only with “wanton endangerment”
for firing shots that ended up in a neighboring apartment. The charge actually has nothing to do with killing Taylor.
Sign this petition
to make sure she receives justice.
This “super-petition”
automatically contacts the appropriate government representatives and demands the police involved in Taylor’s death be arrested and charged.
Sign the
Run With Ahmaud petition
to ensure Ahmaud Arbery gets the justice he deserves. On June 24—five months after Arbery was killed—Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael, and William “Roddie” Bryan were
charged with murder
, but that’s just the first step.
This petition demands a thorough investigation into the officers who used a chokehold on Elijah McClain
, who was walking home from the convenience store and unarmed, and the paramedics who
injected him with ketamine
. It also calls on the officers to be taken off duty.
Black Lives Matter’s petition
is a call to defund the police.
Sign this
Change.org petition to demand justice for Tony McDade
, a Black transgender man who was killed by Tallahassee police on May 27.
This petition
calls on the Tallahassee police to release the footage of McDade’s death and to bring charges against the officers.
Donate, Donate, Donate
So many of the organizations that are dedicated to helping save and advocate for Black lives are in need of additional funds, as are the families involved. And many protestors end up being held on bail, so donating to a
bail fund
helps combat mass incarceration as well as racial and economic disparities. Consider donating to the following:
Daunte Wright’s aunt Kelly Bryant created
a
GoFundMe
to cover his funeral and burial costs,
which you can donate to here
.
George Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd
set up an official memorial fund on GoFundMe
to help their family during this time. Donations cover “funeral and burial expenses, mental and grief counseling, lodging and travel for all court proceedings, and to assist our family in the days to come as we continue to seek justice for George.” Funds will also be committed to the estate of George Floyd to help his children receive an education.
This is the
official GoFundMe for George Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter
. Money donated to this fundraiser will assist with obtaining mental health counseling for her, a good education, and safe travel to and from all court proceedings.
Breonna Taylor’s family set up a GoFundMe
to help them with the financial burden of seeking justice for her.
This
GoFundMe
will help cover funeral costs, mental health and grief counseling, and legal fees for McDade’s family.
Elijah McClain’s mom set up this GoFundMe
to help her family with legal fees after his killing.
The Minnesota Freedom Fund
and
North Star Health Collective
are two of the high-profile funds receiving a ton of donations.
Reclaim the Block
aims to reallocate money from the police department to other areas of the city that need more health and safety resources.
Black Visions
is committed to organizing Black communities in Minnesota.
Donate here
and text “
Black Lives
” to 23559 to stay informed.
The Milwaukee Freedom Fund
has pledged to
support protestors in Kenosha, Wisconsin
, as they carry out demonstrations after Jacob Blake was shot by police. On August 23,
Blake was shot seven times in the back by the police
as he tried to enter his SUV, where his three sons bore witness.
CNN
reported that prior to the shooting, Blake broke up a fight between two women.
The Louisville Community Bail Fund
is using donations to bail out protestors and “provide post-release support to get them from jail, fed, and to a situation of safety.”
The Chicago Community Bond Fund
pays bond for people in Cook County, Illinois. The organization says the “inability to pay bond results in higher rates of conviction, longer sentences, loss of housing and jobs, separation of families, and lost custody of children.”
The Philadelphia Bail Fund
continues to receive referrals for people who desperately need access to donations. A one-time or recurring donation can help free someone.
Any
surplus donations
to the
Atlanta Solidarity Fund
will go toward legal defense funds and to support protestors in other locations.
The Peoples City Council Freedom Fund
helps Los Angeles protestors with legal support, bail, fines, and court fees.
To help out in Houston, check out
Restoring Justice
, which also provides trauma care and additional help navigating the criminal justice system.
The Colorado Freedom Fund
can generally assist those in Denver and the surrounding areas with cash bonds up to $500.
The Columbus Freedom Fund
is helping out Ohio residents who were arrested for protesting.
The Massachusetts Bail Fund
has freed more than 2,745 people since it’s been active and encourages donors to give however much they can.
While you should donate to your local fund and cities where the need is the greatest, if you want to donate to a national fund,
the Bail Project National Revolving Bail Fund
is a solid option. You can also donate directly to
NAACP
,
Equal Justice Initiative
,
Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp
,
Unicorn Riot
,
LGBTQ Fund
,
Emergency Release Fund
, and
Trans Justice Funding Project
, which are all helping on a national level.

Teen Vogue
and
Elle
compiled useful guides on anti-racism reads and how you can use your voice and privilege to fight for a better America. Also, check out
Campaign Zero’s 10-step plan
of action for ending police brutality and
eight policies that can decrease police violence by 72 percent
. Within the
#8CantWait page
, you can search your city and see if it has enacted any of the eight policies. If your city isn’t doing enough, the website automatically gives you the contact information for your mayor. (Note: While Campaign Zero does have some useful resources, many have
criticized the organization and this initiative
for
its data analysis and lack of transparency
, so please think critically and read through materials.)
Be Cautious About What You Share Online
As many have pointed out, avoid sharing images of protestors who can later be found and targeted. Also, consider how
sharing violent images of Black people being killed takes a mental and emotional toll on those who see them
, especially without warning. You do not have to share a graphic video of a Black person being killed to demand justice and speak out against racism.

Protest Wisely
As people take to the streets to protest, it’s so important to know that if you’re an ally, your responsibility is to amplify the voices of Black people,
make sure they’re not being mistreated by the police
, and not incite violence or create a path of destruction. It’s totally
understandable that people are upset and angry
and have gone this direction—not telling anyone how to feel here!—but please keep in mind that it is Black people who will be accused and
face the repercussions
of looting and destroying cities during these protests even if they’re not the ones doing it.

If you can’t make it out to a protest, you can still participate virtually. Although the date for the virtual protest has passed, you’re still encouraged to contact Kentucky officials and go through this list of demands that Loralei HoJay, the creator of the
Change.org petition for Breonna Taylor
, thoughtfully wrote out for everyone:
Vote
Sometimes it feels like voting won’t change anything, but it’s vital that we all continue to exercise our right to vote. After all,
positions like the attorney general in Kentucky are elected ones
. Your vote matters, so use it.
Check out this guide for all the information you need to register to vote
.
Check in With Your Black Friends
Take time to check in with your Black friends, coworkers, and classmates who are struggling and still trying to go about their daily lives right now. A little goes a long way, but be sure to consider your relationship with them—and ask yourself,
Would my friend expect to hear this from
me
specifically
?
—before reaching out. Only reach out in a way that doesn’t put any additional burden on them.

## Be Cautious About What You Share Online
As many have pointed out, avoid sharing images of protestors who can later be found and targeted. Also, consider how [sharing violent images of Black people being killed takes a mental and emotional toll on those who see them](https://www.papermag.com/justice-for-george-floyd-how-to-help-2646107567.html?rebelltitem=9#rebelltitem9), especially without warning. You do not have to share a graphic video of a Black person being killed to demand justice and speak out against racism.

## Protest Wisely
As people take to the streets to protest, it’s so important to know that if you’re an ally, your responsibility is to amplify the voices of Black people, [make sure they’re not being mistreated by the police](https://app.getpocket.com/read/3002327229), and not incite violence or create a path of destruction. It’s totally [understandable that people are upset and angry](https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2020-05-29/george-floyd-minneapolis-riots-louisville-los-angeles) and have gone this direction—not telling anyone how to feel here!—but please keep in mind that it is Black people who will be accused and [face the repercussions](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/may/30/if-violence-isnt-way-end-racism-america-then-what-is-george-floyd-protests) of looting and destroying cities during these protests even if they’re not the ones doing it.

If you can’t make it out to a protest, you can still participate virtually. Although the date for the virtual protest has passed, you’re still encouraged to contact Kentucky officials and go through this list of demands that Loralei HoJay, the creator of the [Change.org petition for Breonna Taylor](https://www.change.org/p/andy-beshear-justice-for-breonna-taylor?source_location=topic_page), thoughtfully wrote out for everyone:

## Vote
Sometimes it feels like voting won’t change anything, but it’s vital that we all continue to exercise our right to vote. After all, [positions like the attorney general in Kentucky are elected ones](https://ag.ky.gov/about/Pages/default.aspx). Your vote matters, so use it. [Check out this guide for all the information you need to register to vote](https://www.cosmopolitan.com/politics/a56220/how-to-register-to-vote-election/).
## Check in With Your Black Friends
Take time to check in with your Black friends, coworkers, and classmates who are struggling and still trying to go about their daily lives right now. A little goes a long way, but be sure to consider your relationship with them—and ask yourself, *Would my friend expect to hear this from* *me* *specifically**?*—before reaching out. Only reach out in a way that doesn’t put any additional burden on them.

It’s been almost a year since [George Floyd](https://www.cosmopolitan.com/politics/a32685928/george-floyd-protest/) was killed after Minneapolis police officers pinned him to the ground and Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for at least eight minutes. These actions were caught on tape and shared widely, igniting protests against racism and police brutality across the globe in the summer of 2020. The jury in the trail against Chauvin delivered a guilty verdict Tuesday on the three charges against him. (Chauvin was [charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter](https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6935897-Derek-Chauvin-Second-degree-murder-charge).) [The judge previously refused a defense request to sequester this jury](https://www.foxnews.com/us/derek-chauvin-trial-judge-refuses-sequester-jury-george-floyd-murder-case) after police shot and killed 20-year-old Daunte Wright at a traffic stop nearby in Minneapolis on Sunday. New protests demanding justice for Wright are now taking place in Minnesota as [police chief Tim Gannon told reporters](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-56714346) Wright’s murder was “accidental.”
Both Floyd’s and Wright’s deaths are among additional acts of police brutality against Black people, including the killings of [Jacob Blake](https://ktla.com/news/nationworld/video-appears-to-show-man-shot-in-back-7-times-by-police-in-wisconsin/), [Ahmaud Arbery](https://www.cosmopolitan.com/politics/a32415907/ahmaud-arbery-murder-black-runner/), [Breonna Taylor](https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/29/us/breonna-taylor-911-call-audio/index.html), Tony McDade, and [Elijah McClain](https://www.cosmopolitan.com/politics/a32969448/elijah-mcclain-killed-by-police-how-to-help-black-lives-matter/), all of whom were honored during last summer’s protests.
If you feel helpless, confused, angry, or fired up, there are actions you can take right now to demand justice. Here’s how you can help:
## Contact Government Officials
Chauvin, the officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck, was just found guilty of the murder of George Floyd. The three other cops—[Tou Thao, Thomas Lane, and J. Alexander Kueng](https://www.harpersbazaar.com/culture/politics/a32701730/how-to-help-george-floyd-donate/)—are charged with [aiding and abetting second-degree murder](https://www.kare11.com/article/news/local/george-floyd/aiding-and-abetting-murder-manslaughter-charges-george-floyd-death-former-offciers/89-bb2db0c6-e5f6-436b-b82e-efd14332be04). [Kueng](https://nypost.com/2020/06/19/j-alexander-kueng-cop-charged-in-george-floyds-death-freed-on-bail/) and [Lane are currently out on bail](https://people.com/crime/fired-minneapolis-police-officer-charged-in-george-floyds-death-released-from-jail-after-posting-bond/).
[The ACLU even pre-wrote scripts you can use](https://www.aclu-mn.org/en/call-for-justice-for-george-floyd) so you don’t have to worry about what to say, and the [NAACP made this easy form to contact your congressional officials](https://support.naacp.org/onlineactions/HTLjqYG940WATTV_Y_SUUQ2) to advocate for criminal justice reform.
## Sign a Petition
- Join 17,000 others in signing [Change.org’s petition](https://www.change.org/p/microsoft-justice-for-daunte-wright) demanding justice for [Daunte Wright, who was shot and killed by police earlier this month at a traffic stop](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/minnesota-police-shooting-daunte-wright-sparks-protests-rcna651). You can also support [the ACLU of Minnesota](https://www.aclu-mn.org/en/press-releases/aclu-mn-responds-police-killing-daunte-wright)’s [call](https://twitter.com/ACLUMN/status/1381448514790653958) for “an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation by an outside agency other than the Brooklyn Center Police or the BCA and for the quick release of any body-cam footage.”
- Text “**FLOYD**” to 55156 to sign [Color of Change’s petition](https://act.colorofchange.org/sign/justiceforfloyd_george_floyd_minneapolis) calling on Mayor Frey to block the Minneapolis officers in George Floyd’s killing from receiving their pensions or becoming officers again.
- [Change.org’s petition](https://www.change.org/p/mayor-jacob-frey-justice-for-george-floyd?utm_source=brand_us&utm_medium=media&use_react=false) also calls on the officers involved in Floyd’s death to be held accountable. Nineteen million people have signed it, and it is still open even though the officers have been charged. Continue to make your voice heard.
- Two of the officers involved in [Breonna Taylor’s death](https://www.cosmopolitan.com/politics/a32756881/breonna-taylor-gofundme-petition-birthdayforbreonna/) ([John Mattingly and](https://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/politics/metro-government/2020/05/16/breonna-taylor-shooting-what-we-know-louisville-police-officers-involved/5200879002/) [Myles Cosgrove](https://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/politics/metro-government/2020/05/16/breonna-taylor-shooting-what-we-know-louisville-police-officers-involved/5200879002/)) remain free. [Brett Hankison was charged only with “wanton endangerment”](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/09/23/grand-jury-indicts-louisville-cop-in-death-of-breonna-taylor.html) for firing shots that ended up in a neighboring apartment. The charge actually has nothing to do with killing Taylor. [Sign this petition](https://www.change.org/p/andy-beshear-justice-for-breonna-taylor) to make sure she receives justice.
- [This “super-petition”](https://www.standwithbre.com/) automatically contacts the appropriate government representatives and demands the police involved in Taylor’s death be arrested and charged.
- Sign the [Run With Ahmaud petition](https://www.runwithmaud.com/) to ensure Ahmaud Arbery gets the justice he deserves. On June 24—five months after Arbery was killed—Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael, and William “Roddie” Bryan were [charged with murder](https://twitter.com/AttorneyCrump/status/1275885111645519874), but that’s just the first step.
- [This petition demands a thorough investigation into the officers who used a chokehold on Elijah McClain](https://www.change.org/p/adams-county-district-attorney-justice-for-elijah-mcclain-2), who was walking home from the convenience store and unarmed, and the paramedics who [injected him with ketamine](https://patch.com/colorado/denver/more-1-8m-people-sign-justice-elijah-mcclain-petition). It also calls on the officers to be taken off duty.
- [Black Lives Matter’s petition](https://actionnetwork.org/forms/2005_email_blm_defund?source=em20_200530_DefundFB) is a call to defund the police.
- Sign this [Change.org petition to demand justice for Tony McDade](https://www.change.org/p/justice-for-tony-mcdade), a Black transgender man who was killed by Tallahassee police on May 27.
- [This petition](https://secure.everyaction.com/BAMRHpdpAUS8Rle7I00UrA2) calls on the Tallahassee police to release the footage of McDade’s death and to bring charges against the officers.
## Donate, Donate, Donate
So many of the organizations that are dedicated to helping save and advocate for Black lives are in need of additional funds, as are the families involved. And many protestors end up being held on bail, so donating to a [bail fund](https://bailproject.org/) helps combat mass incarceration as well as racial and economic disparities. Consider donating to the following:
- [Daunte Wright’s aunt Kelly Bryant created](https://www.elle.com/culture/career-politics/a36094623/daunte-wright-police-shot-protests-minneapolis/) a [GoFundMe](https://www.gofundme.com/f/dauntes-funeral-and-burial-cost) to cover his funeral and burial costs, [which you can donate to here](https://www.gofundme.com/f/dauntes-funeral-and-burial-cost).
- George Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd [set up an official memorial fund on GoFundMe](https://www.gofundme.com/f/georgefloyd) to help their family during this time. Donations cover “funeral and burial expenses, mental and grief counseling, lodging and travel for all court proceedings, and to assist our family in the days to come as we continue to seek justice for George.” Funds will also be committed to the estate of George Floyd to help his children receive an education.
- This is the [official GoFundMe for George Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter](https://ca.gofundme.com/f/gianna-floyd-daughter-of-george-floyd-fund). Money donated to this fundraiser will assist with obtaining mental health counseling for her, a good education, and safe travel to and from all court proceedings.
- [Breonna Taylor’s family set up a GoFundMe](https://www.gofundme.com/f/9v4q2-justice-for-breonna-taylor) to help them with the financial burden of seeking justice for her.
- This [GoFundMe](https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-memory-of-tony-mcdade) will help cover funeral costs, mental health and grief counseling, and legal fees for McDade’s family.
- [Elijah McClain’s mom set up this GoFundMe](https://www.gofundme.com/f/elijah-mcclain) to help her family with legal fees after his killing.
- [The Minnesota Freedom Fund](https://minnesotafreedomfund.org/donate) and [North Star Health Collective](https://www.northstarhealthcollective.org/) are two of the high-profile funds receiving a ton of donations.
- [Reclaim the Block](https://www.reclaimtheblock.org/home/#about) aims to reallocate money from the police department to other areas of the city that need more health and safety resources.
- [Black Visions](https://www.blackvisionsmn.org/) is committed to organizing Black communities in Minnesota. [Donate here](https://secure.everyaction.com/4omQDAR0oUiUagTu0EG-Ig2) and text “**Black Lives**” to 23559 to stay informed.
- [The Milwaukee Freedom Fund](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfsHBaIXiKP_-QJNce4OTZ0f7BlSx_Tj3L2NFDEzZDfshVbtQ/viewform) has pledged to [support protestors in Kenosha, Wisconsin](https://www.bonterratech.com/), as they carry out demonstrations after Jacob Blake was shot by police. On August 23, [Blake was shot seven times in the back by the police](https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/24/us/kenosha-police-shooting-jacob-blake/index.html?utm_term=link&utm_source=twCNN&utm_medium=social&utm_content=2020-08-24T08%3A51%3A05) as he tried to enter his SUV, where his three sons bore witness. - [The Louisville Community Bail Fund](https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising/louisville-community-bail-fund/) is using donations to bail out protestors and “provide post-release support to get them from jail, fed, and to a situation of safety.”
- [The Chicago Community Bond Fund](https://chicagobond.org/) pays bond for people in Cook County, Illinois. The organization says the “inability to pay bond results in higher rates of conviction, longer sentences, loss of housing and jobs, separation of families, and lost custody of children.”
- [The Philadelphia Bail Fund](https://www.phillybailfund.org/) continues to receive referrals for people who desperately need access to donations. A one-time or recurring donation can help free someone.

- To help out in Houston, check out [Restoring Justice](https://www.restoringjustice.org/about#socialwork), which also provides trauma care and additional help navigating the criminal justice system.
- [The Colorado Freedom Fund](https://fundly.com/coloradofreedom) can generally assist those in Denver and the surrounding areas with cash bonds up to \$500.
- [The Columbus Freedom Fund](https://www.paypal.me/columbusfreedomfund) is helping out Ohio residents who were arrested for protesting.
