Set the scene
A team of staff in burgundy puffer jackets greet you at the chalet doors straight off the slopes with chocolate-coated crĂŞpes and fragrant saucepans of bubbling
vin chaud
. Inside, there are dark oil paintings, wooden beams, enormous fire places and Persian rugs, as well as huge wooden rafts of dried figs, dates, oranges and lychees for guests. If it wasnât for the Alpine backdrop you could be in a grand British country crashpad.
Whatâs the story?
In 1919, NoĂŠmie de Rothschild, a regular in
St Moritz
, gave her ski instructor the task of finding the perfect spot to build her own
winter
resort. With the choice of Megève and the slopes that now make up
Val dâIsère
, de Rothschild chose the former (then a modest farming town) for its gentle slopes and unique sunlight â and so bought several hundred hectares of Mont dâArbois. It was her son, Baron Edmond de Rothschild, who then became known for turning the town into a Rothschild empire â his name, which appears on restaurant menus, and embroidered into the Ecole de Ski instructorsâ red kit now encompasses the entire non-financial side of the family business. Following a 10-million-Euro investment, Les Chalets du Mont dâArbois, which is made up of three large chalets (former private residences of the Rothschild clan), is the second Rothschild-owned property in Megève to come under the Four Seasons umbrella â and together with FS Megève five minutes up the hill, the aim is for the two hotels (and their restaurants and spas) to complement each other with everything a guest could need.

What can we expect from the rooms?
Rooms are snug but not small â stripped of orange pine, or at least sanded â and equipped with the Four Seasons signature beds (enormous, oh-so-soft and in this case with retractable TVs at your feet), covered in soft fake-fur throws and leather cushions. Fires can be lit on return from a day on the mountain, and there are walk-in wardrobes, as well as cupboards hidden at every turn for all the excess fanfare that comes with skiing. Ariane de Rothschild, Edmondâs daughter-in law, commissioned the renovation by Thierry Curty, under the artistic direction of Pierre-Yves Rochon, and is responsible for the art â a mix of glass-blown sculpture, quirky animal-headed portraits and impressionist paintings.

What to pack for a weekend in Ibiza

How about the food and drink?
The options tick a lot of different boxes with butter, olive oil, honey and cheese all coming straight from the Rothschild farms. In the basement, thereâs the Michelin-starred Prima (egg yolk and lambâs lettuce followed by Bresse roast chicken with black truffle and dauphinoise potatoes); down the road is the more traditional Savoyard, La Taverne (cheese fondue, raclette or rare beef fillets and French fries in a lively wooden-chalet setting); and five minutes drive up the road at FS Megève are the two-starred Le 1920 and Asian-fusion restaurant Kaito. On top of this, together with the Four Seasons, the Rothschilds run the hottest restaurant on the slopes: IdĂŠal 1850, where the black-truffle-topped white pizza is a must. Check ahead â the monthly pop-up lunches with Kaito are an opportunity to try the chilli rock-shrimp tempura, black cod and bright-green shrimp and coriander rice on a sunny terrace, but booking is essential. The DJ and saxophonist on the balcony are an attempt to compete with party spot La Folie Douce further up the mountain, and the atmosphere is fun.
Chalet Alice at Les Chalets du Mont d'Arbois, Megève
The skiing
The hotel is a four-minute walk from the Mont dâArbois ski lift â very doable as thereâs a staffed ski locker at the bottom of the slopes to leave skis and boots at the end of the day â but a fleet of FS-branded vehicles will be sure to try and stop guests walking anywhere. The pistes are pretty gentle, and the resort is known for being one of the sunniest in
France
. Its highest point, at just over 8,200ft, is on Mont-Joly, but snow cover is rarely a problem. Itâs probably the closest ski resort to
Geneva
at just over an hour, which means itâs very convenient for a long weekend.
What's the neighbourhood scene?
The town itself is beautiful â a pristine, traffic-free medieval centre with cobbled streets, chocolate-box shops, a pretty church spire and a stream running through the centre. Horse-drawn carriages are commonplace and the streets are full of fur-clad locals, as well as non-skiing visitors.

Who goes here?
By the 1950s, Edmond de Rothschild had turned Megève into one of the most popular
ski resorts in Europe
and attracted lots of stage and film stars, as well as wealthy French families, so much so that Jean Cocteau once nicknamed it the â21st arrondissement of Parisâ. These days it draws wealthy families from all over the world.

Anything to say about the service?
The Four Seasons signature service is on show â nothing is too much trouble and thereâs always multiple staff on hand should you need a fire lit or a mug for your tea.
Noemie Suite at Les Chalets du Mont d'Arbois, Megève
Anything else?
The Bamford spa in the basement has three treatment rooms for satisfying deep-tissue massages after a busy day skiing. Thereâs also an indoor-outdoor heated pool and an ice rink that has little ones in raptures. Guests are allowed to use the more extensive spa facilities at the FS Megève.
Anything you donât like?
The cleaning staff didnât have their schedules nailed â seemingly always turning up at the end of the day, despite the guarantee of an empty room to make up when guests are out skiing.
Is it worth it?
The independence of a chalet, but with everything you need from a hotel. A great addition to Megèveâs flashy hotel scene with lots of top restaurants to boot.

Ideal Suite at Les Chalets du Mont d'Arbois, Megève
**Set the scene**
A team of staff in burgundy puffer jackets greet you at the chalet doors straight off the slopes with chocolate-coated crĂŞpes and fragrant saucepans of bubbling *vin chaud*. Inside, there are dark oil paintings, wooden beams, enormous fire places and Persian rugs, as well as huge wooden rafts of dried figs, dates, oranges and lychees for guests. If it wasnât for the Alpine backdrop you could be in a grand British country crashpad.
**Whatâs the story?**
In 1919, NoĂŠmie de Rothschild, a regular in [St Moritz](https://www.cntraveller.com/location/st-moritz), gave her ski instructor the task of finding the perfect spot to build her own [winter](https://www.cntraveller.com/gallery/snow-photographs) resort. With the choice of Megève and the slopes that now make up [Val dâIsère](https://www.cntraveller.com/location/val-d-isere), de Rothschild chose the former (then a modest farming town) for its gentle slopes and unique sunlight â and so bought several hundred hectares of Mont dâArbois.

**What can we expect from the rooms?**

**How about the food and drink?**

**The skiing**
The hotel is a four-minute walk from the Mont dâArbois ski lift â very doable as thereâs a staffed ski locker at the bottom of the slopes to leave skis and boots at the end of the day â but a fleet of FS-branded vehicles will be sure to try and stop guests walking anywhere. The pistes are pretty gentle, and the resort is known for being one of the sunniest in [France](https://www.cntraveller.com/location/france). Its highest point, at just over 8,200ft, is on Mont-Joly, but snow cover is rarely a problem. Itâs probably the closest ski resort to [Geneva](https://www.cntraveller.com/location/geneva) at just over an hour, which means itâs very convenient for a long weekend.
**What's the neighbourhood scene?**

**Who goes here?**
By the 1950s, Edmond de Rothschild had turned Megève into one of the most popular [ski resorts in Europe](https://www.cntraveller.com/gallery/ski-hotels-europe) and attracted lots of stage and film stars, as well as wealthy French families, so much so that Jean Cocteau once nicknamed it the â21st arrondissement of Parisâ. These days it draws wealthy families from all over the world.

**Anything to say about the service?**
The Four Seasons signature service is on show â nothing is too much trouble and thereâs always multiple staff on hand should you need a fire lit or a mug for your tea.

Noemie Suite at Les Chalets du Mont d'Arbois, Megève
**Anything else?**
**Anything you donât like?**
The cleaning staff didnât have their schedules nailed â seemingly always turning up at the end of the day, despite the guarantee of an empty room to make up when guests are out skiing.
**Is it worth it?**
The independence of a chalet, but with everything you need from a hotel. A great addition to Megèveâs flashy hotel scene with lots of top restaurants to boot.
