In 2006, it has been listed as the national intangible cultural heritage. It got the name because it is in the middle of autumn at August 15 th  in lunar calendar and at the night of full moon, thus also known as Mooncake Festival or Moon Festival. Through thousands years of development in ancient China, mid-autumn festival has become a festival for conveying the feelings of homesickness and thoughts of missing loved ones, making it a festival of family reunion. Originated from the autumn harvest celebration, it also expresses gratitude for a bountiful harvest of five grains of Chinese since ancient China. So when is the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2026? In 2026, the Mid-autumn Festival will fall on  September 25th. As it is on Friday, it automatically creates a three-day break with the following Saturday and Sunday. Except the common traditions like eating moon cake, admire the moon, there are also some local folk customs, such as the ancestor worship in Chaoshan District, floating lanterns on rivers in southern China, and watching tides of Qiantang River in Zhejiang province, etc. 1.  Moon worship Moon worship can be traced back to Zhou Dynasty and has become an important part of the family worship in later times. The common procedures are as follows: set up a incense burner table, place some mooncakes and fruits on it, then burn incense and light candles, bow to the moon, and pray for peace and reunion. Some females will also pray for beauty like Chang’e, a beautiful goodness living on the moon in ancient Chinese myth. Till now, the Dai nationality in Yunnan Province also preserve this custom to express their longing for beauty. 2.  Eating Mooncakes The most common tradition of Mid-Autumn Festival is eating mooncakes which has been prevalent since Ming Dynasty. The types of mooncake are also various in different regions. The  Cantonese mooncake is the most common one, which is featured by thinner skin, more stuffings and delicate patterns. The main stuffings include egg yolk lotus seed paste, sweet bean paste, and five kernels. Suzhou-style mooncake is also popular, the characteristics of it are the several layers of flaky puff pastries and unique production process. There are two main tastes: sweet mooncakes with stuffings of rose and fruits and salty mooncakes with stuffings of meat and ham. Beijing-style mooncake is the representative in the northern China, which is in court style. They are characterized by moderate sweetness and a crisp and crumbly texture. Celebrations of Mid-autumn Festival in Hong Kong and Macau Hong Kong: The most famous celebration activity in Hong Kong is the fire dragon dances show in Tai Hung, which has been listed as the national intangible cultural heritage. A 67-meter-long dragon is decorated with numerous incenses, and the parade with the dragon through Causeway Bay district is undoubtedly worth watching.
