Martin Scorsese is best known for his crime movies. The Departed, Goodfellas, Casino, Taxi Driver, and more recently, The Irishman all feature tough guys who work for or with the mob. The 2010 psychological thriller Shutter Island goes against the grain of the other films in the prolific director's filmography. While it does star one of his favorite collaborators, Leonardo DiCaprio, it's a mystery and a psychological thriller . There are creepy scenes with deranged characters, spooky ambiance from the foggy sky, and even a few jump scares. Overall, it's a far cry from anything that Scorsese had done in his career thus far. Shutter Island is based on a novel by Dennis Lehane. It tells the story of a U.S. Marshal named Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) who travels to Ashecliffe Hospital with his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo). The mental institution is located on a remote island that is surrounded by caves and rocky cliffs. Daniels and Aule are seemingly there to investigate the disappearance of one of the female patients. Spoiler alert: The truth is that Daniels is actually himself a patient at Ashecliffe, and Aule is his psychiatrist. Daniels concocted a tale of being a U.S. Marshal to help cope with the death of his wife and children. The name Shutter Island may seem like a mystery when looking at the novel and its film adaptation. It's actually a clever anagram: "truths and lies" or "truth/denials." This play on words hints at the story's deceptive nature and shocking twist ending. Nothing Is as It Seems in Shutter Island Eagle-eyed viewers may spot all of the clues that lead to the twist ending of Shutter Island. It starts by analyzing the anagram found in the title. "Truth and lies" shows that there are elements of truth in the plot. Teddy Daniels is, in fact, locked inside a hospital called Ashecliffe. He did lose his wife and children to a tragic accident. However, that's about where the "truth" portion ends. The entire rest of the story is a lie. Teddy Daniels's real name is Andrew Laeddis. After returning home from the battle in World War II, he finds that his wife Dolores's mental illness has steadily progressed. One day, he comes home to find her drowning their three children outside of their home. "Truth/denials" is another way to interpret the anagram found in Shutter Island's title . It also provides insight into how the book and movie end. Andrew Laeddis largely wants to deny the truth of what happened to his wife and children. In doing so, he's living in a state of denial at Ashecliffe Hospital. This denial has gone so far that he truly believes that he is a U.S. Marshal. He doesn't trust Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley), believing him to be involved in Rachel Solano's disappearance. He denies that Chuck Aule is not his trusted partner, but a psychiatrist trying to help him come to grips with reality. Above all, he denies that he's really a patient at Ashecliffe Hospital. The bitter reality is that even when living as his alter ego, Teddy Daniels, Andrew still isn't able to fully shake the recollections of his wife and children. He constantly has nightmares about his deceased family, which ends in a fire. The viewer (or the reader) is led to believe that his wife and children are no longer alive (one of the truths), but the lie comes in the fact that they didn't meet their fate the way the narrative is leading one to believe. Rather, it was a tragic murder that involved a psychotic snap in both Dolores and Andrew. The Title Isn't the Only Anagram Found in the Book and Movie Dennis Lehane was clearly a fan of anagrams. Not only is the title Shutter Island an anagram that hints at the conclusion, but the character names are also a clever switching around of letters. First, look at the name Andrew Laeddis. Moving around the letters results in the name Edward Daniels—Teddy's real first and last name in the book. Rachel Solano is the missing patient at Ashecliffe Hospital whom Teddy has presumably come to locate. Her name is also a carefully constructed anagram for Dolores Chanel—Teddy's wife's full maiden name. Going back to the idea of "truth and lies," Rachel turns out not to be an actual patient at Ashecliffe Hospital. Rather, she's someone that Andrew Laeddis made up in his mind to represent his wife. She's missing because his wife is missing from his own life. Her disappearance has never been solved because Andrew has never come to terms with the fact that he murdered her after she killed their children. It's a horrific backstory that he's repressed to cope with the reality. In the movie, the audience learns that the doctors who are taking care of Andrew's treatment encouraged him to play out his fantasy of being a U.S. Marshal. They believed it would cure him of his coping mechanism and face the realities of his wife's psychosis, the death of his children, and his own murder of his wife. Unfortunately, they are right back to the drawing board. Andrew sits with his psychiatrist on the steps of Ashecliffe Hospital as the two share a cigarette. Andrew jumps right back into the dialogue of trying to uncover the conspiracy of what's going on at the mental institution. His psychiatrist, "Chuck," looks forlorn as he stares at the other doctors. This ending heavily suggests that Andrew was never cured of his psychosis. He still believes that he's a U.S. Marshal investigating the disappearance of Rachel Solano. In the book, the anagram "Edward Daniels" for "Andrew Laeddis" turns out to be a clever Easter egg written by Dennis Lehane for the reader rather than a clever name that the doctors came up with in the book. Andrew adopts the name "Edward Daniels" in memory of his murdered sons. "Rachel Solano," on the other hand, is nothing more than another clever anagram for the reader to discover after the truth is revealed at the end of the book, and eventually in Martin Scorsese's film adaptation. There Is More Than One Way to Interpret the Ending of Shutter Island A trail of breadcrumbs leads viewers to the shocking twist ending of Shutter Island. For starters, there's the mysterious "law of 4" that Teddy finds in Rachel Solano's room at Ashecliffe Hospital. Teddy isn't sure how to interpret this strange clue when he's investigating Rachel's disappearance. By the time the viewer reaches the end of the movie, they understand that the "law of 4" refers to the two anagrams (four names) that exist in the movie—Rachel Solano for "Dolores Chanel" and "Edward Daniels" for "Andrew Laeddis." Like any good movie, viewers can interpret the meaning of Shutter Island in a myriad of ways. There's a moral quandary about how Dr. Cawley, Chuck Aule, and the rest of the team of doctors at Ashecliffe Hospital are gaslighting Andrew into believing his own lies. They think it will cure him of his delusions, but really, the narrative they're pushing (that he's a U.S. Marshal investigating a disappearance) only helps him continue to live in denial. The fact that Andrew Laeddis is a veteran of World War II also casts a shadow over the ending of Shutter Island. He may have snapped psychotically after seeing such horrific deaths at his own home because he was still recovering from the trauma of the war. It's hard to say whether he would have killed Dolores in a fit of passion if he didn't have that backstory. Of course, seeing one's spouse murder their children definitely justifies a person experiencing a psychotic break. Dr. Cawley reveals that Andrew had been regressing back into the Teddy Daniels character for months. Every time it seems as though he's ready to face the reality of his life, he ends up slipping right back into the role of a U.S. Marshal. It all circles back to the anagram found in the title, Shutter Island. The sad ending of the movie and book suggests that he will forever remain at Ashecliffe Hospital, believing in his own lie and living in a state of denial.
