The six-year-old boy in Michigan who killed a little girl in his class lived in a so-called "flophouse" where guns and drugs were everywhere.
The boy who shot and killed Kayla Rolland in an elementary school outside of Flint Tuesday will not face criminal charges because he's too young.
Genesee County prosecutor Arthur Busch said the boy "did not understand what he had done, did not appreciate the consequences of his actions and appeared to take this as some sort of well, that just kinda happens like on television."
The boy was questioned again Wednesday and told investigators that the shooting was an accident and he had only been trying to scare the girl, Police Chief Eric King said.
Classes for Wednesday and Thursday were cancelled at the Buell Elementary School. People have been showing up with flowers and teddy bears to mark Kayla's death.
Investigators believe the gun used in the shooting had been left, apparently loaded, under some blankets in a bedroom at the house. They also found a stolen 12-gauge shotgun and drugs in the house, the prosecutor said.
The boy and his eight-year-old brother had been staying for about two weeks with the uncle -- their mother's brother -- after the mother had been evicted from her home, Busch said.
The boy's father - who is in jail for a parole violation - told the sheriff that people at the house traded crack cocaine for guns. A judge has ordered the children to stay with an aunt.
In response to the tragedy, U.S. President Bill Clinton urged Congress to pass a gun control law, saying, "...we simply haven't done enough to keep guns away from criminals and children."
The shooting occurred as students were about to leave for the library. Five children were in the classroom and others were lined up outside. The teacher was standing in the doorway.
Busch said the boy pointed the gun at another boy, then turned and fired at Kayla. She was shot once in the chest.
No other students were reported injured in the shooting. About 500 children attend Buell Elementary School. |
