Overview
One of the first and most recognizable players in the segment, the Tesla Model 3 remains a textbook example of an electric compact sedan. Its core strengths are its quick acceleration, its long-range estimates, and its impressively fast charging times. It also recently received suspension and interior quality updates that keep this five-passenger EV at the top of its class.
The Model 3 has a clean exterior and interior design that follows the brand's uncluttered approach. Like most Tesla models, however, hard buttons and controls are few. Traditional driver-centric instruments such as the speedometer are positioned on the single, center-mounted display, and even the gear selector is accessed via the display. Puzzlingly, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still absent.
Expert Tip:
If you find the Model 3 appealing but the heavy reliance on the single touchscreen puts you off, take a look at the
Hyundai Ioniq 6
,
Kia EV4
, or even the

What's New for 2026?
Tesla called an audible and resurrected the base
Standard Model 3
for 2026. The trim roster sees a mild adjustment in the process; the former Model 3 Long Range RWD and AWD trims are now known as Premium RWD and AWD. The Performance trim still tops the lineup.
C/D Expert Tip:
If this year's model is largely unchanged and you're comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years.
A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it'll cost less than buying new.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2026 Tesla Model 3 starts at $38,630 and goes up to $56,630 depending on the trim and options.
The standard rear-wheel-drive, single-motor Model 3 Premium (formerly Long Range) delivers 363 miles of EPA-estimated range at an attractive price. If having AWD is a must, moving to the AWD variant requires a reasonable upcharge and reduces range slightly to 346 miles. All Model 3s come standard with heated and ventilated front seats, navigation, and Tesla's Autopilot driver-assist system. While the 2026 Standard trim's attractive MSRP is hard to ignore, the cost cutting is evident: The steering wheel adjusts manually, seat upholstery features textile inserts in place of the otherwise standard full faux-leather treatment, heating is limited to the front seats and ventilation is not available for any position, the rear infotainment screen and premium audio are off the menu, and the adaptive cruise control lacks lane-keeping functionality.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance
EV Motors:
286-hp single motor, 425-hp dual motor, 510-hp dual motor
Drivetrains:
front-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive
As with most EVs, the Model 3 gains speed swiftly, smoothly, and almost silently, with the electric motor—or motors—providing a strong punch. The Model 3 carries its battery under the floor, resulting in a low center of gravity, which helps it change direction crisply and feel planted and stable. The steering is accurate and well-weighted, with three different settings that adjust the level of effort.
The ride is firm without being harsh, and the cabin is
notably quieter than before
in our testing. The Model 3 Performance includes a sport-tuned suspension with adaptive dampers, upgraded brakes, and a staggered set of wheels with grippier tires.
0–60-MPH Times
C/D
60-mph Test
: 2.8 seconds (Performance), 4.6 seconds (Premium RWD)
In Comparison:
The Model 3 Performance brings (relatively) cheap speed, with its 2.8-second time besting that of even the
BMW i4 M50
, which retails for thousands more.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
C/D
Range Tests:
310 miles (Single Motor RWD), 260 miles (Dual Motor Performance)
EPA EV Range:
309-363 miles
Range estimates for the Model 3 are among the highest in its segment, and while it couldn’t quite match those estimates in our real-world highway range test, it still beats many rivals. The Model 3 offers several different options for charging: Tesla's network of fast-charging stations, called Superchargers, adapters for public charging stations, and a home-charging station. On a DC fast charger, we replenished the battery of a dual-motor Performance model from 10 percent to 90 percent in just 39 minutes. Note that the new Model 3 Standard has a max charging rate of 225 kW, while the rest of the lineup charges at up to 250 kW.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe
C
/D
75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Tests:
128 MPGe (Single Motor RWD), 91 MPGe (Dual Motor Performance)
EPA City Ratings:
120-145 MPGe
EPA Highway Rating(s):
107-128 MPGe
The various versions of the Model 3 are rated between 113 MPGe and 138 MPGe by the EPA. Our RWD Long Range test vehicle managed 128 MPGe on
our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test
, and the Performance model managed 91 MPGe. The Model 3 comes standard with aluminum wheels that are covered by plastic aerodynamic hubcaps. We wanted to know how much impact those hubcaps have on the car's driving range, so we tested with and without them and were surprised to find that
they helped more than expected
.
MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent,
an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV vehicle fuel efficiency
. For more information about the Model 3's fuel economy, visit
the EPA's website
.
In Comparison:
The BMW i4 xDrive40 is EPA-rated for 99 MPGe combined and returned 71 MPGe in our 75-mph real-world fuel economy testing.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row:
The front row is characterized by a flat floor, minimalistic design cues, and a monolithic touchscreen in the center of the dashboard. The front seats are supportive and comfortable, and there are some decent storage cubbies.
Second Row:
The rear seat isn’t as accommodating at the front. The seats are positioned low and are cramped; don't expect adults to be able to spend long periods of time back there.
Cargo Capacity:
Storage in the front trunk is limited to three cubic feet, but the trunk in the rear is more capacious. Folding the 60/40 rear seat forward enlarges the trunk space, and we were able to fit 15 carry-on suitcases.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Infotainment:
15.4-inch touchscreen
Connectivity:
Bluetooth, USB connectivity
Audio System:
9-speaker stereo (standard), 17-speaker Performance stereo (optional)
Curiously, the Tesla Model 3 is not available with AM radio or SiriusXM satellite radio, nor can it be equipped with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. However, several internet-streaming radio options are standard, and the Model 3 offers plenty of
entertainment options
on its central display, including Netflix, YouTube, and a host of arcade games.
Mounted to the rear of the center console in the Premium and Performance trims is an 8.0-inch touchscreen that provides rear-seat passengers access to climate control and infotainment features.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
Although we think the name Autopilot is misleading, the
driver-assist system
has one of the best feature sets in the industry, with smooth operation and impressive capabilities such as automatic lane changes.
Standard Safety Features:
adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning
For more information about the Model 3's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (
NHTSA
) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (
IIHS
) websites.
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Tesla's overall warranty coverage is among the longest in the EV segment, but it's disappointing that the coverage doesn't include corrosion protection. The Long Range model includes an additional 20,000 miles of coverage for its battery and drive components.
Limited Warranty:
four years or 50,000 miles
Powertrain Warranty:
eight years or 100,000 miles
Complimentary Maintenance:
none

Tesla called an audible and resurrected the base [Standard Model 3](https://www.caranddriver.com/preview/2026-tesla-model-3-model-y-standard-revealed?content=949cd4e5-3561-4b56-956c-81dd75863c02&type=standard-article) for 2026. The trim roster sees a mild adjustment in the process; the former Model 3 Long Range RWD and AWD trims are now known as Premium RWD and AWD. The Performance trim still tops the lineup.
C/D Expert Tip:
**If this year's model is largely unchanged and you're comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years.** A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it'll cost less than buying new.

## **EV Motor, Power, and Performance**
- **EV Motors:** 286-hp single motor, 425-hp dual motor, 510-hp dual motor
- **Drivetrains:** front-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive
As with most EVs, the Model 3 gains speed swiftly, smoothly, and almost silently, with the electric motor—or motors—providing a strong punch. The Model 3 carries its battery under the floor, resulting in a low center of gravity, which helps it change direction crisply and feel planted and stable. The steering is accurate and well-weighted, with three different settings that adjust the level of effort.
The ride is firm without being harsh, and the cabin is [**notably quieter than before**](https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a62595445/2024-tesla-model-3-quieter-more-highway-range-tested/) in our testing. The Model 3 Performance includes a sport-tuned suspension with adaptive dampers, upgraded brakes, and a staggered set of wheels with grippier tires.
## **0–60-MPH Times**
- ***C/D*** **60-mph Test**: 2.8 seconds (Performance), 4.6 seconds (Premium RWD)
**In Comparison:** The Model 3 Performance brings (relatively) cheap speed, with its 2.8-second time besting that of even the [BMW i4 M50](https://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/i4), which retails for thousands more.

## **Range, Charging, and Battery Life**
- ***C/D*** **Range Tests:** 310 miles (Single Motor RWD), 260 miles (Dual Motor Performance)
- **EPA EV Range:** 309-363 miles
## **Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe**
- ***C**/D* 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Tests:** 128 MPGe (Single Motor RWD), 91 MPGe (Dual Motor Performance)
- **EPA City Ratings:** 120-145 MPGe
- **EPA Highway Rating(s):** 107-128 MPGe
The various versions of the Model 3 are rated between 113 MPGe and 138 MPGe by the EPA. Our RWD Long Range test vehicle managed 128 MPGe on [**our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test**](https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a32018270/how-we-test-cars/#hwtfueleconomydrivingrange), and the Performance model managed 91 MPGe. The Model 3 comes standard with aluminum wheels that are covered by plastic aerodynamic hubcaps. We wanted to know how much impact those hubcaps have on the car's driving range, so we tested with and without them and were surprised to find that [**they helped more than expected**](https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a30169467/tesla-model-3s-aero-wheel-covers-efficiency-test/).
MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent, [**an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV vehicle fuel efficiency**](https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a31863350/what-is-mpge/). For more information about the Model 3's fuel economy, visit [the EPA's website](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.shtml).
**In Comparison:** The BMW i4 xDrive40 is EPA-rated for 99 MPGe combined and returned 71 MPGe in our 75-mph real-world fuel economy testing.
## **Interior, Comfort, and Cargo**
**First Row:** The front row is characterized by a flat floor, minimalistic design cues, and a monolithic touchscreen in the center of the dashboard. The front seats are supportive and comfortable, and there are some decent storage cubbies.
**Second Row:** The rear seat isn’t as accommodating at the front. The seats are positioned low and are cramped; don't expect adults to be able to spend long periods of time back there.
**Cargo Capacity:** Storage in the front trunk is limited to three cubic feet, but the trunk in the rear is more capacious. Folding the 60/40 rear seat forward enlarges the trunk space, and we were able to fit 15 carry-on suitcases.

## **Infotainment and Connectivity**
- **Infotainment:** 15\.4-inch touchscreen
- **Connectivity:** Bluetooth, USB connectivity
- **Audio System:** 9-speaker stereo (standard), 17-speaker Performance stereo (optional)
Curiously, the Tesla Model 3 is not available with AM radio or SiriusXM satellite radio, nor can it be equipped with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. However, several internet-streaming radio options are standard, and the Model 3 offers plenty of [**entertainment options**](https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a30151777/tesla-model-3-entertainment-features/) on its central display, including Netflix, YouTube, and a host of arcade games.
Mounted to the rear of the center console in the Premium and Performance trims is an 8.0-inch touchscreen that provides rear-seat passengers access to climate control and infotainment features.
## **Safety and Driver-Assistance Features**
Although we think the name Autopilot is misleading, the [**driver-assist system**](https://www.caranddriver.com/features/g27612164/car-safety-features/) has one of the best feature sets in the industry, with smooth operation and impressive capabilities such as automatic lane changes.
- **Standard Safety Features:** adaptive cruise control, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning
For more information about the Model 3's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ([**NHTSA**](https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings)) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ([**IIHS**](https://www.iihs.org/)) websites.
## **Warranty and Maintenance Coverage**
Tesla's overall warranty coverage is among the longest in the EV segment, but it's disappointing that the coverage doesn't include corrosion protection. The Long Range model includes an additional 20,000 miles of coverage for its battery and drive components.
- **Limited Warranty:** four years or 50,000 miles
- **Powertrain Warranty:** eight years or 100,000 miles
- **Complimentary Maintenance:** none
## ***C/D*** **Test Results and Specs**
Each year, we put hundreds of vehicles through our [rigorous instrumented testing regimen](https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a32018270/how-we-test-cars/). If the data in the chart below is for an older model, that's because this vehicle hasn't changed from when we last tested it, and the test results remain accurate.

## **Overview**
**Expert Tip:** If you find the Model 3 appealing but the heavy reliance on the single touchscreen puts you off, take a look at the [**Hyundai Ioniq 6**](https://www.caranddriver.com/hyundai/ioniq-6), [Kia EV4](https://www.caranddriver.com/kia/ev4), or even the [**BMW i4**](https://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/i4).

## **What's New for 2026?**

## **Pricing and Which One to Buy**
The price of the 2026 Tesla Model 3 starts at \$38,630 and goes up to \$56,630 depending on the trim and options.
