Use margins, bleed, rulers, and crop marks
In this article
Planning to print something? Turn on margins, bleed, rulers, and crop marks while designing to make sure everything prints as expected.
Margins, bleed, rulers, and crop marks aren’t available yet in Canva Docs. Changing margin, bleed, and crop mark sizes are also not available. These are fixed and are measured based on our print specifications.
We may be unable to check your design for quality control before it goes to print, so make sure you
use CMYK colors
and
proof your designs
for print before placing your order.
Margins are the boundary lines that help you keep important content, such as text, logos, or key visuals, safely away from the edge of your design. Turning on margins helps your layout look balanced and ensures nothing is accidentally trimmed or appears cramped when printed or exported.
It’s important to note that margins are not the same as the danger zone you’ll see in proofing. Margins act as a visual guide during design, while the danger zone marks the outer area where elements may be cut off during printing. Keeping your content within the margins helps you stay clear of the danger zone later on.

Turning on margins helps you:
Avoid placing important text or images too close to the edge of your design
Ensure better alignment and layout for both digital and printed outputs
Create cleaner, more professional designs
The
Show margins
feature may not appear in some document types or older templates. Try switching to a newer Canva format or start with a blank design.
Margins are different from the **danger zone** shown during proofing. Â
Margins are used while designing to guide layout. The danger zone appears later, during **print preview**, and highlights areas that might be trimmed or misaligned if content is too close to the edge.
Bleed refers to the area that extends beyond the edge of your design. It ensures that there are no unwanted white borders when the design is trimmed after printing.
What is Canva’s default bleed size?
Canva adds 0.125 inches (3.175 mm) on all sides for products that trim or get cut. This does
not
apply to products where the ink doesn’t go to the edge of the paper or product (e.g., printed envelopes, apparel products, drinkware, etc.).
This means an A4 design with bleed will export as approximately 222 mm Ă— 309 mm, instead of the standard 216 mm Ă— 303 mm (printable area)
If you're printing outside Canva Print, check with your print provider for bleed requirements. They may trim at different margins.
Avoid unintended white edges when printing to the edge of the paper.

From the top menu, select

.
Select

. A border of dashed lines will appear close to the edges of your design. This bleed margin is fixed based on print production standards and cannot be adjusted.
If you see white gaps around the design edges, resize or stretch your background to cover them. Stretch elements, that you don’t mind being cut, around the edges as well.

If your design doesn’t appear to change, this is normal. Canva slightly reduces the visible content to account for the bleed. You may not see a colored bleed area unless your background or elements extend past the edge.
Rulers and guides help you align elements precisely.
You can only use rulers on a computer.
This feature is currently not available when using mobile.

Select
Show rulers and guides
. Rulers showing pixel dimensions appear at the top and left of the canvas. These reflect the canvas size, not the final physical product. Canva scales your design to fit when you select a product in the
Print
panel, but the rulers don’t change. The ruler’s unit matches the design’s dimensions. For example, pixel designs show pixel rulers.
Gray highlight
on the rulers will appear when you select and move an element in your design. This is to help you know the element’s exact position.
To add guides, click and drag your rulers to your design. See

Contextual Danger Zone (CDZ)
is a feature in the editor that helps you spot layout issues while designing via Canva print. You'll see a red highlight when Canva detects text or elements too close to the edge. The full danger zone appears, not just around the specific item. It's especially useful for print designs, even before you start proofing.

Currently, Canva does

## Use margins, bleed, rulers, and crop marks
In this article
Planning to print something? Turn on margins, bleed, rulers, and crop marks while designing to make sure everything prints as expected.
Margins, bleed, rulers, and crop marks aren’t available yet in Canva Docs. Changing margin, bleed, and crop mark sizes are also not available. These are fixed and are measured based on our print specifications.
We may be unable to check your design for quality control before it goes to print, so make sure you [use CMYK colors](https://www.canva.com/help/cmyk-for-print/) and [proof your designs](https://www.canva.com/help/proof-designs-print/) for print before placing your order.
1. Create or open an existing design.
2. From the top menu, select **File,** then **Settings**.
3. Select **Show margins**. A border of broken lines will appear on your design pages.
4. Edit your design, and keep important elements inside the margin.

Turning on margins helps you:
- Avoid placing important text or images too close to the edge of your design
- Ensure better alignment and layout for both digital and printed outputs
- Create cleaner, more professional designs
- The **Show margins** feature may not appear in some document types or older templates. Try switching to a newer Canva format or start with a blank design.
- Margins are different from the \*\*danger zone\*\* shown during proofing.
- Margins are used while designing to guide layout. The danger zone appears later, during \*\*print preview\*\*, and highlights areas that might be trimmed or misaligned if content is too close to the edge.
Bleed refers to the area that extends beyond the edge of your design. It ensures that there are no unwanted white borders when the design is trimmed after printing.
**What is Canva’s default bleed size?**
- Canva adds 0.125 inches (3.175 mm) on all sides for products that trim or get cut. This does **not** apply to products where the ink doesn’t go to the edge of the paper or product (e.g., printed envelopes, apparel products, drinkware, etc.).
- This means an A4 design with bleed will export as approximately 222 mm Ă— 309 mm, instead of the standard 216 mm Ă— 303 mm (printable area)
If you're printing outside Canva Print, check with your print provider for bleed requirements. They may trim at different margins.
Avoid unintended white edges when printing to the edge of the paper.
1. Create or open an existing design.
2. From the top menu, select **File,** then **Settings**.
3. Select **Show print bleed**. A border of dashed lines will appear close to the edges of your design. This bleed margin is fixed based on print production standards and cannot be adjusted.

1. Create or open an existing design.
2. From the menu bar, select **File**, then **Settings**.
3. Select **Show rulers and guides**. Rulers showing pixel dimensions appear at the top and left of the canvas. These reflect the canvas size, not the final physical product. Canva scales your design to fit when you select a product in the **Print** panel, but the rulers don’t change. The ruler’s unit matches the design’s dimensions. For example, pixel designs show pixel rulers.
4. **Gray highlight** on the rulers will appear when you select and move an element in your design. This is to help you know the element’s exact position.
To add guides, click and drag your rulers to your design. See [Adding, locking and unlocking, and removing guides](https://www.canva.com/help/adding-and-removing-guides/) for more details.

Some users may not see rulers due to the editor version, device type, or design template. If it’s not showing, try switching to a desktop browser or an updated template.
Add crop marks when downloading your design to mark where to trim the paper.

Crop marks only appear in exported PDFs and not inside the Canva editor
**Contextual Danger Zone (CDZ)** is a feature in the editor that helps you spot layout issues while designing via Canva print. You'll see a red highlight when Canva detects text or elements too close to the edge. The full danger zone appears, not just around the specific item. It's especially useful for print designs, even before you start proofing.
*Watch this short video for a quick demo:*
- When **enabled**, a red overlay appears if any element enters the danger zone.
- You can **snap elements to the edge** to make sure they stay in the safe area.
1. Go to **File**
2. Select **Settings**
3. Tick **Show danger zone detection** to turn it on
4. Untick it to turn it off

Currently, Canva does **not support automatic custom margins**, but you can simulate them using guides or by manually aligning content.
This refers to content placed too close to the edge. Canva’s margin guides are wider than the danger zone, so keeping important elements inside the margin helps avoid cutting off text or images. |
