the
sixth
annual
in a
series!
â is a list, not a ranking, so please don't yell at us if your favorite is #27 or whatever.]
1. The Stuck Ship
On March 23, the container ship
Ever Given
was just makinâ its way downtown when strong winds wafted it off course, lodging it sideways in the Suez Canal. The vessel, bigger than the Empire State Building, blocked the global trade route for days, preventing billions of dollars of goods from reaching their destinations.
So, yeah, global trade disaster, the economy, sure, it wasnât great. But over on the Good Ship
The Internet
, people spiraled it into a
huge
and
undeniably
delightful
meme
on Twitter symbolizing all of lifeâs most daunting obstacles.
Ever Given
wiggled free nearly a week later (because of
THE MOON!!!
), but I, for one, support the stuck ship getting stuck again sometime.
2. Sea Shanties
Speaking of nautical memes, sea shanties had a huge moment in early January, searing them into history as one of the first major memes of 2021. Scottish singer
Nathan Evans
posted a rendition of âThe Wellermanâ on TikTok in the last week of 2020. In the following weeks, it blew up with people duetting it, layering their own vocals and instrumentation until it turned into a
gradually growing viral chorus
.
A number of other 19th-century maritime folk songs also became
hugely
viral
after that. Their popularity mightâve had something to do with the timing; between a pandemic winter and a deadly insurrection, things were feeling pretty bleak. These simple, catchy
earworms
â and the creative camaraderie they sparked â were a wholesome reprieve.
3. Cheugy
Chevron print. Mugs emblazoned with #girlboss (see #8) or âbut first, coffee.â Posting a picture of your significant other on Instagram and captioning it âmy forever wedding dateđ.â These highly specific things, and many others, are what one might label as âcheugy.â The term (pronounced
chew-ghee)
entered the public consciousness in a
TikTok
on March 30, but the woman who posted it told the
New York Times
that she and her friends had been using it since she coined it in 2013 to describe the basic millennial aesthetic.
Though the TikTok had gotten pretty big on its own, it was only
after Yahoo a
nd
the New York Times
published articles about it that âcheugyâ blew up across social platforms and received tons of media coverage and freakouts by 30-somethings. In reality, the backlash far outweighed the prevalence of anyone actually using the term, but the culture was already primed for some millennial-versusâGen Z warfare; in the preceding months, discourse had been percolating that zoomers had âcanceledâ skinny jeans and side parts. And while there had been a handful of
antiâskinny
jean
TikToks
that set it in motion, they were vastly outweighed by millennialsâ
antiâantiâskinny jeans
/proâside part TikToks (including a few in the form of
musical
parody
, which, of course, is the most cheugy form of comedy). Basically, no oneâs actually calling anyone cheugy, and in fact, calling someone cheugy would be pretty cheugy. (Except
BuzzFeed
, which is def cheugy.)
4.
Bernie Sanders
â Mittens
Itâs hard to believe President Biden was inaugurated
this year
, but he was, which was also how we wound up with easily the biggest political meme of 2021. Outside the Capitol on Jan. 20, Sen. Sanders was
photographed
wearing an
extremely practical
parka and mittens while carrying a manila envelope in a look that can best be described as âVermont dad popping out for a quick errand.â The image instantly became a
massive meme
, with people
inserting the photo
into various images like a sort of
Whereâs Waldo?
puzzle
.
(This was,
as returning readers of this series know
, Bernieâs second year in a row making it into the annual meme compendium.)
In an interview on
Late Night With
Seth Meyers
days later, Sanders said
heâd seen the memes
, explaining he had just âsitting there, trying to keep warm.â He gave a shoutout to the
second-grade teacher who handknit the mittens
for him after he lost his bid for president in 2016.
5. Noodle the Pug
Bones or no bones? This was the question that determined our days, and the answer came from Noodle, a 13-year-old pug who became one of TikTokâs biggest stars this year. Each morning, Noodleâs owner,
Jonathan Graziano
, hoists the senior dog out of bed to see if heâll stand up. When he succeeds, it is declared a â
Bones Day
,â and when he instead slumps back into bed as if he has not a single bone in his body â you guessed it â thatâs a â
No Bones Day
.â Graziano started posting these videos in August, but they began getting millions of views in October, and the concept of âBones Daysâ became a
pervasive
part
of the
online
lexicon
. Like reading tea leaves, but with an adorably floppy pup.
6. Couch Guy
Long-distance relationships can be tough, but theyâre probably a lot tougher if half the internet bands together to accuse you of cheating on your girlfriend. Thatâs what happened to Robert McCoy in September after his girlfriend, Lauren Zarras,
posted a TikTok
of her surprising him at his college. Presumably, she thought viewers would find it heartwarming, but it backfired immensely. Comments poured in insisting McCoyâs demeanor âwas not excited at allâ and that they could âfeel the awkward tension.â
People speculated he was cheating with one of the other women on the couch. The couple denied anything was wrong. Zarras defended him in the comments, and McCoy (who by now was better known as âCouch Guyâ) posted
his own TikTok
, saying, âdonât be a creep,â under which commenters accused him of gaslighting. Some people even broke the video down frame by frame to âproveâ McCoy was disloyal and that the couple would soon split.
Zarras and McCoy beat the odds and are still together â but even months later, her TikTok comments remain a mess; people are obsessively checking in to see if theyâve broken up and picking apart everything she posts to theorize on the state of their relationship. In an essay for
Slate
in December, McCoy said the ordeal was reminiscent of True Crime TikTokâs history of people going too far with their sleuthing, like what happened with the
Gabby Petito case
and how
Sabrina Prater
, a trans woman who posts dancing TikToks, was targeted by a
baseless conspiracy theory
that she was a serial killer.
âThere will inevitably be more Couch Guys or Praters in the future,â McCoy
wrote
. âWhen they appear on your For You page, I implore you to remember that they are people, not mysteries for you to solve.â
7. Astronaut in the Ocean
đ¶ Whatchu know about rollinâ down in the deep? đ¶ I apologize to everyone who spent all of 2021 on TikTok for getting this stuck in your head again. âAstronaut in the Oceanâ by Australian rapper Masked Wolf came out in 2019 but went hugely viral this year until it felt like it was in almost
every
other
TikTok. People got
preeeetty
sick of it. As part of the backlash, the song became a sort of
rickroll
, with people
mashing it up
into
other
songs
. âBro I felt nauseous for a second,â one person commented on a mashup of the song with
Katy Perryâs âRoar.â
8. Gatekeep, Gaslight, Girlboss
The
mythical âgirlbossâ
jumped the millennial pink shark
before the year even began. Women founders of chic, statusy companies â including
the Wing
,
Away,
and
Reformation
â faced accusations of toxic and even racist workplaces and not living up to the progressive ethos so outwardly key to their brands. Girlbosses, it turned out, didnât lead the revolution (and were, in fact, kinda cringe).
Though the ironic usage of âgirlbossâ was already common by 2020 to highlight the emptiness of corporate feminism, this year gave us the ultimate catchphrase for aspiring she-EOs everywhere: â
gatekeep, gaslight, girlboss
.â The phrase first appeared on
Tumblr
in January, according to
Know Your Meme
, and quickly took internet culture
by storm
(particularly in TikTok comments). Another phrase, â
girlbossed a bit too close to the sun
,â also became a meme on TikTok. (Honorable mention goes to being âa
woman
in
STEM
.â
9.
The Backyardigans
The Backyardigans
, a musical childrenâs show that aired on Nickelodeon from 2004 to 2013,
had a major nostalgic resurgence on TikTok this spring
, starting when TikToker
Merlysha Pierre
posted in April about the programâs numerous â
supersonic bops
.â Several of the showâs original songs, including â
Into the Thick of It
,â and â
International Super Spy
,â went viral, and â
Castaways
â became so popular it reached the top of Spotifyâs global viral chart.
The showâs voice actors, as well as lyricists and composers behind the music,
told BuzzFeed News
in June they were moved and amazed to see their work being celebrated so widely years later.
âIâm still floored at how many years have gone by and people are making this a big thing, but I also understand, because I smile every time I think of
The Backyardigans
,â said
Jamia Simone Nash
, the singing voice behind Uniqua. âBeing a part of everyoneâs childhood, thatâs been the best part of my career.â
10.
Kathryn Hahn
Winking
2021 was all about embracing your femininity when it came to this meme. Starting in October, tweets about onesâ highly specific âfeminine urgesâ â â
to hunt and gather (steal),
â â
to hold your boob when youâre bored
,â â
to die for Harry Styles
â â were everywhere on the site, and they quickly spread to Instagram and TikTok. Despite the chokehold it had across platforms, the meme actually originated months earlier on
Tumblr
(a common genesis with these kinds of text-based memes), according to
Know Your Meme
.
12. âNo Childrenâ by the Mountain Goats
A 2002 indie-folk song about divorce may not scream viral TikTok challenge contender, but 2021 finds a way. The depressing tune started taking off on the platform in
October
and wound up
spiraling
into a
whole
dance
trend
(featuring a lot of
cats
).
The Mountain Goatsâ lead singer John Darnielle told
Vox
it felt odd to learn of the virality of âNo Children,â but heâs happy to see a new generation enjoying the bandâs music. âThere is a certain joy in sort of feeling like, well, the kids have got a thing going on that Iâm not going to fully get. But I can just enjoy watching,â he said. âI think people fear getting older and fear that theyâll feel left out, but thereâs a kind of buoyancy in that left-out quality sometimes, if you ride it the right way.â
13. Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and Oprah
Prince Harry and Meghan Markleâs sitdown interview with
Oprah Winfrey
was undoubtedly one of the biggest TV events of 2021. The conversation was full of
bombshells
that left
many stunned
â including Winfrey herself, whose expression of shock wound up becoming a
huge
reaction
meme
on Twitter.
14. Bama Rush
One wild week in August, people suddenly found their TikTok feeds flooded with blonde women in Shein statement earrings, Steve Madden wedges, and brightly colored skirts and dresses from somewhere called âPants Store.â Weâre talking, of course, about sorority rush at the University of Alabama, with other Southern schools hopping in on the trend soon after. Videos of the potential new members (PNMs) showing off their outfits before each recruitment round went viral,
catapulting
some
of
them
to
TikTok
stardom
faster
than you can say â
jewelry is normal
.â #BamaRush became such a sensation that people posted
their
predictions
guessing
what sorority each PNM would get into, and some dressed up for
parody
TikToks
sharing their own âoh oh tee dees.â
15. Berries and Cream
If you spent any time on YouTube in the 2000s, you might remember this little lad and his love of berries and cream. The
2007 ad for Starburst
was a viral hit at the time, but this summer, it had something of a renaissance and fully took over TikTok. You could hardly scroll through your feed without getting
rickrolled
by the jingle or seeing someone
dancing
the signature jig.
The original âlittle lad,â performance artist Jack Ferver, even got in on the fun, starting
their own TikTok
account where they dress up and perform as
the iconic character
. âWhat I found interesting was writing back to people who were commenting, and really getting into that zone of performing the Little Lad,â Ferver told the
New York Times.
âItâs another performance art piece.â
16. Here Comes the Boy
đ¶ Here comes the boyyyy, hello boy, welcome, there he is, he is here⊠đ¶ This little ad-libbed jingle became one of TikTokâs most wholesome audio memes over the summer when user @june_banoon posted a
video
singing it to a neighborâs cat (named Johnny, but who goes by the excellent nickname âMashed Potatoesâ).
Naturally, everyone loved it, and a ton of people made duets, accompanying it on
pianos
,
guitars,
violins
,
flutes
,
harps
, and
trumpets
and layering on their
own
vocal
harmonies
until it was transformed into a gorgeous, cumulative symphony.
17. Mommy? Sorry. Mommy?
And now, clinching the elusive 2021 title of horniest meme of the year! âMommy. Sorry? Mommy,â first originated in August, when TikTok user @roofjesus said it in a
thirsty post
about their girlfriend. The audio blew up, especially among
queer
women
on the platform.
But the place the phrase became most ubiquitous was in comment sections; scroll through the comments on any thirst-trappy TikTok and youâre bound to find it. Some have
criticized
the trend, saying the comments
sexualize people
who
didnât ask to be
.
18. People Kildren
This kicked off in a TikTok by
@lawrinkydink
from May where he attempts to sing the Black Eyed Peasâ classic âWhere Is the Love?â and gets the lyrics totally wrong, making up words while attempting to remember them. His version goes âchildren peekle, people kildren.â Inspired by the commitment to continue even when clueless, people started making their own videos to it. Like in
this one
, a TikTok user counts how many times he uses the same wrong words in the video. In another, someone wrote out the
entire lyrics
and that eventually led to a
really soothing cover
.
19. Bean Dad
Thereâs an old adage that every day there is a main character of Twitter, and â
the goal is to never be it
.â That goal was promptly fumbled by podcaster John Roderick, or as you more likely know him, âBean Dad,â who on Jan. 2
tweeted a thread
about how, as a âteaching moment,â he made his 9-year-old daughter spend hours trying to figure out how to open a can of beans rather than just open it for her himself.
What transpired was a backlash so fierce that â
milkshake ducking
â could ostensibly be renamed âbean dadding.â People piled on Roderick, criticizing his parenting and accusing him of child abuse (he
later said
a few even reported him to Child Protective Services). Roderick deleted his account after offensive tweets heâd posted years prior were resurfaced, and he wound up apologizing (both for those tweets, as well as the thread) in a lengthy
blog post
.
20. White Girl Dancing
Whilst the observation that white girls dance just slightly offbeat with their hands in the air has been long
noted by historians
, this year it really took off as a meme. Videos of
people dancing
with their hands in the air, typically to the Calvin Harris song âHow Deep Is Your Love,â
became a meme
in early summer this year. Black people on TikTok then started lifting their White Claws in the air to
do the dance too
. One Black TikToker told
Mashable
he found the white girl dance to be âfreeing.â
21. Two Guys on the Bus
The meme of the
two people on opposite sides of a bus
, where one of the passengers gets a view an
d the other does not,
really took off in mid-November. The way it works in meme form is by associating something negative with the sad-faced passenger looking out at the hill and something positive with the lucky fellow looking out at the view. According to
Know Your Meme
, the meme was first used by Brazilian Twitter users and then it made its way to Reddit and eventually back to the English-speaking side of Twitter. Now lots of people have filled in their own texts,
such as sad boy
âs âpeople remembering their childhoodsâ sitting across from smiling âtheir moms being like âthatâs not how I remember itââ guy.
22. Naur
âNaurâ is a play on how Australians pronounce the word ânoâ with
stan Twitter
really turning it into a ~cool~ way of disagreeing with something. It also became popular through the
TikTok meme
based on the Australian TV show
H2O
where people would
remake a scene
and say âOh naur Cleo.â For those of you who know about the
speaking in italics
meme, ânaurâ is pronounced like the italic version of â
no
.â Or, if youâre Aussie, itâs just
pronounced correctly.
BuzzFeed News senior culture writer (and noted Australian) Estelle Tang
explained in her story
that ânaurââ took off after a viral TikTok where someone screamed it and the comments of that video ended up filled only with the word. People didnât only say ânaurâ with the Aussie twang; they also started making memes about its pronunciation, such as this Normani
tweet that has us wheezing into our Vegemite toast.
23. The Omarion Variant
The announcement of the Omicron variant of coronavirus was met with the same exhausted but frenzied energy as Delta: memes. However, this time, thanks to the variantâs nameâs similarity to that of the musician and former lead singer of B2K, the meme potential was even wilder. The internet renamed it âthe Omarion variant,â posting videos and photos of the Californian singer (
he even joined in himself on the tweets
). Omarion dancing in the music video for the song aptly named âTouchâ was the
perfect meme
, as was
this one
riffing off the lyrics from his song âPost to Be.â This moment made the âmy plans vs. the Delta variantâ tweets feel like a lifetime ago.
24. Immortal Snail
Imagine this: You are offered millions of dollars and the chance to become immortal. The catch? A giant snail â whose mere touch will kill you instantly â also becomes immortal and will hunt you down for eternity. This hypothetical scenario originated in 2014 on the podcast
Rooster Teeth
but resurfaced in August in a TikTok from
@benjhandy
. By October, the immortal snail had became a meme in its own right, with tons of
people
making
TikToks
about it (usually paired with John Lennonâs
â
Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
,â for inexplicable reasons) depicting their eternal hell evading the slimy menaceâs
slow but unrelenting pursuit.
25. Waking Up in the Morning
đ¶Waking up in the morning, thinking about so many thingsâŠđ¶ Easily one of the biggest musical memes of the year, this song could most often be found in TikToks of people revealing their
most
embarrassing
moments
. It comes from a 2011 episode of
Real Housewives of New Jersey
,
during which a thenâ10-year-old Gia Giudice performed an emotional rendition of her made-up song in an effort to convince her mom and uncle to stop fighting.
The nowâ20-year-old took her belated viral fame in stride, posting
her own TikTok
in March lip-synching to it. In an
interview with Andy Cohen
on
Watch What Happens Live
, Giudice said she never imagined her song would blow up a decade later, âbut honestly, I think itâs so funny and Iâm just owning it at this point.â
26. Yassification
If youâve seen
Lin-Manuel Miranda
with a full contour, the
Quaker Oats
guy with platinum blonde hair extensions, or all four members of
Weezer
with lip fillers and a smoky eye, you probably already know this one. One of the biggest LGBTQ memes of the year, â
yassification
â consisted of editing images of famous figures in FaceApp to transform them into the
Instagram Face
version of themselves. The word âyassificationâ (derived from â
yaaas queen
,â the term that
originated with queer people of color
in 1980s ball culture but
went mainstream
in the mid-2010s thanks to
Broad City
and a
Lady Gaga fanâs video
) first appeared on Twitter in 2020, according to
Know Your Meme
, but it wasnât until this November that it fully took off. âYassifiedâ images started bubbling up all over
Twitter
and
TikTok
, particularly on the account
@YassifyBot
. Denver Adams, the 22-year-old art student behind the account,
told BuzzFeed News
in November that they hope their creations make people consider how apps like FaceApp can contribute to unhealthy beauty standards.
âThe bottom line is itâs a satire of this ageist technology and insane beauty standards through these artificial intelligence apps,â Adams said.
27. Gorgeous Gorgeous Girls
Hot girl summer may have
come and gone
, but 2021 was all about being a gorgeous, gorgeous girl. The phrase comes from an August
TikTok
, in which user
@fishdress
professed that âgorgeous, gorgeous girls love soup.â It went massively viral, and tons of people posted their own versions, with the expression becoming
ubiquitous
on
Twitter
as well.
The markers of a gorgeous, gorgeous girl vary widely, but may include loving
pickles
, taking the
train
because they canât drive, listening to
Simple Plan
, having
stomach problems
, adopting
pit bulls
, getting their
booster shot
, and pretending âto be
Beth March dying of scarlet fever
every time theyâre near the sea.â Really, anyone can be a gorgeous, gorgeous girl if they decide they are one.
28. Milk Crate Challenge
This is a challenge that probably shouldnât have taken off the way it did. The Milk Crate Challenge involved stacking crates into a pyramid and scaling it â often to disastrous results. Doctors advised against it, with some telling the
Washington Post
they had treated patients whoâd taken part.
People would film themselves walking up the crates like stairs, but because of the lack of stability, many wound up brutally wiping out. Even so, people continued to attempt the challenge, and one woman even
completed it in high heels.
The internet did its bit to warn people of the danger, with the best meme PSA being, of course, the edit of
âJason Deruloâ tumbling down the crates
.
29. I Know It Ainât the Stallion
This meme comes from none other than the queen Keke Palmer, who was the red carpet
presenter for Vogue
at this yearâs Met Gala. When Megan Thee Stallion walked up, she said, âOh oh oh, I know it ainât⊠I know it ainât the staaallion⊠You know it's your girl!â and the rest was history.
That audio really took off on TikTok when a user
remixed it with a keyboard
. The sound went viral, and users made their own versions in the same format. For example, â
I know it ainât the consequences of my actions
,â which
JoJo Siwa
used.
Palmer later addressed the meme in an interview with
Entertainment Tonight
. âWhy am I at my job doing that?â she said. âI donât know what it is with me.â
30. Red Flags
The
red flag meme
is one of the few memes from this year that will definitely make it long term: Itâs short, simple, and memorable. First started on Black Twitter with people naming obvious negative traits someone could have, it quickly escalated from
actual red flags about a person
to
just straight-up jokes
. Obviously brand accounts jumped on it like they would any good meme, with
MTV getting ratioed hard
for their own red flag attempt.
31. The Girls That Get It, Get It
âGood soup,â a meme for when the soup is good (shoutout to my gorgeous, gorgeous girls). The simple audio clip comes from one of the final episodes of
Girls
,
in which Adam Driver and Lena Dunham decide to part ways. Punctuating the emotional conversation held in a diner booth, Driver eats a spoonful of soup, throws up the âOKâ hand sign, and says âgood soup.â Though the episode aired in 2017, it wasnât until
August
that it made its way to TikTok, and it quickly became a huge meme used to
all
sorts
of
wacky
ends
.
In an interview with
Screenrant,
Driver said he was aware of the meme but didnât really get it. âI mean, like I understand what memes are, I guess, but itâs not something I keep track of or am tracking,â he said.
No worries, Adam, thatâs what weâre here for.

## 1\. The Stuck Ship

Suez Canal Authority via AP

On March 23, the container ship [*Ever Given*](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/juliareinstein/suez-canal-boat-ship-stuck-memes) was just makinâ its way downtown when strong winds wafted it off course, lodging it sideways in the Suez Canal. The vessel, bigger than the Empire State Building, blocked the global trade route for days, preventing billions of dollars of goods from reaching their destinations.
So, yeah, global trade disaster, the economy, sure, it wasnât great. But over on the Good Ship *The Internet*, people spiraled it into a [huge](https://twitter.com/TeaAndCopy/status/1375137550638125057) [and](https://twitter.com/deebashadnia/status/1374751523373203461) [undeniably](https://twitter.com/forexflowlive/status/1374728053675470851) [delightful](https://twitter.com/KarlreMarks/status/1375138808954503169) [meme](https://twitter.com/KimBhasin/status/1375064363372056576) on Twitter symbolizing all of lifeâs most daunting obstacles. *Ever Given* wiggled free nearly a week later (because of [THE MOON!!\!](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/juliareinstein/suez-canal-boat-free)), but I, for one, support the stuck ship getting stuck again sometime.
## 2\. Sea Shanties

Speaking of nautical memes, sea shanties had a huge moment in early January, searing them into history as one of the first major memes of 2021. Scottish singer [Nathan Evans](https://www.tiktok.com/@nathanevanss/video/6910995345421962498) posted a rendition of âThe Wellermanâ on TikTok in the last week of 2020. In the following weeks, it blew up with people duetting it, layering their own vocals and instrumentation until it turned into a [gradually growing viral chorus](https://www.tiktok.com/@tahnex/video/6916118495080107265).
A number of other 19th-century maritime folk songs also became [hugely](https://www.tiktok.com/@thetrills/video/6924497065661795590) [viral](https://www.tiktok.com/@strong_promises/video/6916252199236521222) after that. Their popularity mightâve had something to do with the timing; between a pandemic winter and a deadly insurrection, things were feeling pretty bleak. These simple, catchy [earworms](https://www.tiktok.com/@forwardspiral97/video/6916644938713271557) â and the creative camaraderie they sparked â were a wholesome reprieve.
## 3\. Cheugy

Chevron print. Mugs emblazoned with \#girlboss (see \#8) or âbut first, coffee.â Posting a picture of your significant other on Instagram and captioning it âmy forever wedding dateđ.â These highly specific things, and many others, are what one might label as âcheugy.â The term (pronounced *chew-ghee)* entered the public consciousness in a [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@webkinzwhore143/video/6945562242259684613?_d=secCgYIASAHKAESMgowIIrb2MgbhGVOIyJ09JNPVQp5TuAoeqDtaYpktcC%2Bm6tlv5CRMjYAtCSA8OJ71ED3GgA%3D&language=en&preview_pb=0&sec_user_id=MS4wLjABAAAA4BgIbw0ed4-DdJrkIGl8b-Z7qVcLSeJC8LSb_o3Q8_UKKEk1hoyPyATFAQmpe-Go&share_app_id=1233&share_item_id=6945562242259684613&share_link_id=A055E62D-FB85-482E-BC8D-FF0128A0236B&source=h5_m×tamp=1619731440&tt_from=copy&u_code=6dc3cefl1fi8a&user_id=144377784793104384&utm_campaign=client_share&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=copy&_r=1) on March 30, but the woman who posted it told the [New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/29/style/cheugy.html) that she and her friends had been using it since she coined it in 2013 to describe the basic millennial aesthetic.
Though the TikTok had gotten pretty big on its own, it was only [after Yahoo a](https://www.intheknow.com/post/cheugy-meaning/)nd [the New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/29/style/cheugy.html) published articles about it that âcheugyâ blew up across social platforms and received tons of media coverage and freakouts by 30-somethings. In reality, the backlash far outweighed the prevalence of anyone actually using the term, but the culture was already primed for some millennial-versusâGen Z warfare; in the preceding months, discourse had been percolating that zoomers had âcanceledâ skinny jeans and side parts. And while there had been a handful of [antiâskinny](https://www.tiktok.com/@momohkd/video/6865765755649068293) [jean](https://www.tiktok.com/@akrutiviras/video/6907465620363726085) [TikToks](https://www.tiktok.com/@ayyylexi/video/6900674088726039813) that set it in motion, they were vastly outweighed by millennialsâ [antiâantiâskinny jeans](https://www.tiktok.com/@_momwithnojob/video/6924789744513666309)/proâside part TikToks (including a few in the form of [musical](https://www.tiktok.com/@graciegummybear/video/6931413928001965318) [parody](https://www.tiktok.com/@earwaxoverproducer/video/6932200930947435781), which, of course, is the most cheugy form of comedy). Basically, no oneâs actually calling anyone cheugy, and in fact, calling someone cheugy would be pretty cheugy. (Except [BuzzFeed](https://twitter.com/BuzzFeed/status/1389682684981547011), which is def cheugy.)
## 4\. [Bernie Sanders](https://www.buzzfeed.com/alanavalko/aoc-remarks-health-care-trump)â Mittens

Itâs hard to believe President Biden was inaugurated *this year*, but he was, which was also how we wound up with easily the biggest political meme of 2021. Outside the Capitol on Jan. 20, Sen. Sanders was [photographed](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/tanyachen/bernie-sanders-inauguration-outfit) wearing an [extremely practical](https://twitter.com/AstasiaWill/status/1351918548751446016) parka and mittens while carrying a manila envelope in a look that can best be described as âVermont dad popping out for a quick errand.â The image instantly became a [massive meme](https://www.buzzfeed.com/daves4/bernie-sanders-inauguration-memes), with people [inserting the photo](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/adeonibada/bernie-sanders-memes-website) into various images like a sort of *Whereâs Waldo?* puzzle*.* (This was, [as returning readers of this series know](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/juliareinstein/best-2020-memes), Bernieâs second year in a row making it into the annual meme compendium.)
In an interview on *Late Night With [Seth Meyers](https://www.buzzfeed.com/stephaniesoteriou/seth-meyers-dog-frisbee-andy-samberg-feud-explained)* days later, Sanders said [heâd seen the memes](https://www.buzzfeed.com/larryfitzmaurice/bernie-sanders-responds-to-inauguration-memes), explaining he had just âsitting there, trying to keep warm.â He gave a shoutout to the [second-grade teacher who handknit the mittens](https://www.pressherald.com/2021/01/26/south-portland-high-school-graduate-turns-sewing-skills-into-viral-sensation/) for him after he lost his bid for president in 2016.

## 5\. Noodle the Pug

@jongraz / TikTok / Via [tiktok.com](https://www.tiktok.com/@jongraz/video/7015223171011857670)
Bones or no bones? This was the question that determined our days, and the answer came from Noodle, a 13-year-old pug who became one of TikTokâs biggest stars this year. Each morning, Noodleâs owner, [Jonathan Graziano](https://www.tiktok.com/@jongraz), hoists the senior dog out of bed to see if heâll stand up. When he succeeds, it is declared a â[Bones Day](https://www.tiktok.com/@jongraz/video/7022251358833118469),â and when he instead slumps back into bed as if he has not a single bone in his body â you guessed it â thatâs a â[No Bones Day](https://www.tiktok.com/@jongraz/video/7020027193216503046).â Graziano started posting these videos in August, but they began getting millions of views in October, and the concept of âBones Daysâ became a [pervasive](https://www.tiktok.com/@oldbarracksmuseum/video/7019371811322219782) [part](https://www.tiktok.com/@notthemaincharacters/video/7020132314789252357) of the [online](https://www.tiktok.com/@cheezitfanatic/video/7019424274737892613) [lexicon](https://twitter.com/realnorireed/status/1458865060827344911). Like reading tea leaves, but with an adorably floppy pup.
## 6\. Couch Guy

Long-distance relationships can be tough, but theyâre probably a lot tougher if half the internet bands together to accuse you of cheating on your girlfriend. Thatâs what happened to Robert McCoy in September after his girlfriend, Lauren Zarras, [posted a TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@laurenzarras/video/7010543290449693957) of her surprising him at his college.
Zarras defended him in the comments, and McCoy (who by now was better known as âCouch Guyâ) posted [his own TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@souljawatchambassador/video/7014253284743449861), saying, âdonât be a creep,â under which commenters accused him of gaslighting.
In an essay for [Slate](https://slate.com/technology/2021/12/tiktok-couch-guy-internet-sleuths.html) in December, McCoy said the ordeal was reminiscent of True Crime TikTokâs history of people going too far with their sleuthing, like what happened with the [Gabby Petito case](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/tanyachen/tiktoks-obsession-with-the-gabby-petito-case) and how [Sabrina Prater](https://www.tiktok.com/@sabrinaprater625), a trans woman who posts dancing TikToks, was targeted by a [baseless conspiracy theory](https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/tiktok-true-crime-conspiracy-theory-fake-1264687/) that she was a serial killer.
âThere will inevitably be more Couch Guys or Praters in the future,â McCoy [wrote](https://slate.com/technology/2021/12/tiktok-couch-guy-internet-sleuths.html). âWhen they appear on your For You page, I implore you to remember that they are people, not mysteries for you to solve.â
## 7\. Astronaut in the Ocean

Masked Wolf / Via [youtube.com](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRNyamyBOIQ)
đ¶ Whatchu know about rollinâ down in the deep? đ¶ I apologize to everyone who spent all of 2021 on TikTok for getting this stuck in your head again. âAstronaut in the Oceanâ by Australian rapper Masked Wolf came out in 2019 but went hugely viral this year until it felt like it was in almost [every](https://www.tiktok.com/@jayprehistoricpets/video/6944323404954619142) [other](https://www.tiktok.com/@thekiryalife/video/6925453405875883266) TikTok. People got *preeeetty* sick of it. As part of the backlash, the song became a sort of [rickroll](https://www.tiktok.com/@sto.ve/video/6958612804584656134), with people [mashing it up](https://www.tiktok.com/@rachelberryfromglee/video/6961174815390567686) into [other](https://www.tiktok.com/@julian.fayard/video/7028388810224422150) [songs](https://www.tiktok.com/@julian.fayard/video/6961292073899183366). âBro I felt nauseous for a second,â one person commented on a mashup of the song with [Katy Perryâs âRoar.â](https://www.tiktok.com/@julian.fayard/video/6958978172511735045)

## 8\. Gatekeep, Gaslight, Girlboss

@nwordchan / Twitter / Via [Twitter: @nwordchan](https://twitter.com/nwordchan/status/1368693231756713999)
The [mythical âgirlbossâ](https://www.thecut.com/2021/08/demise-of-the-girlboss.html) [jumped the millennial pink shark](https://www.vox.com/22466574/gaslight-gatekeep-girlboss-meaning) before the year even began. Women founders of chic, statusy companies â including [the Wing](https://www.thecut.com/2020/06/the-wing-co-founder-audrey-gelman-is-stepping-down-as-ceo.html), [Away,](https://www.theverge.com/2019/12/5/20995453/away-luggage-ceo-steph-korey-toxic-work-environment-travel-inclusion) and [Reformation](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/tanyachen/founder-of-reformation-yael-aflalo-apology-accusations) â faced accusations of toxic and even racist workplaces and not living up to the progressive ethos so outwardly key to their brands. Girlbosses, it turned out, didnât lead the revolution (and were, in fact, kinda cringe).
Though the ironic usage of âgirlbossâ was already common by 2020 to highlight the emptiness of corporate feminism, this year gave us the ultimate catchphrase for aspiring she-EOs everywhere: â[gatekeep, gaslight, girlboss](https://www.tiktok.com/@www.atson/video/6953840786563714309).â The phrase first appeared on [Tumblr](https://missnumber1111.tumblr.com/post/640127089257889792/todays-agenda-gaslight-gatekeep-and-most) in January, according to [Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/gaslight-gatekeep-girlboss), and quickly took internet culture [by storm](https://www.tiktok.com/@superkeara/video/6999457843149589765) (particularly in TikTok comments). Another phrase, â[girlbossed a bit too close to the sun](https://www.tiktok.com/@carol.ine3/video/6999701979681410310),â also became a meme on TikTok. (Honorable mention goes to being âa [woman](https://twitter.com/delusionalanja/status/1376346159116132353) [in](https://twitter.com/garrcie/status/1450653811551440898) [STEM](https://www.tiktok.com/@tootoffy/video/6886177413588471046).â
## 9\. [The Backyardigans](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/juliareinstein/castaways-backyardigans-tiktok-song)

Nickelodeon
*The Backyardigans*, a musical childrenâs show that aired on Nickelodeon from 2004 to 2013, [had a major nostalgic resurgence on TikTok this spring](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ikrd/backyardigans-tiktok-castaway), starting when TikToker [Merlysha Pierre](https://www.tiktok.com/@swagsurfff) posted in April about the programâs numerous â[supersonic bops](https://www.tiktok.com/@swagsurfff/video/6958239706123406598?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1).â Several of the showâs original songs, including â[Into the Thick of It](https://www.tiktok.com/@abrameng/video/6970437270432173317),â and â[International Super Spy](https://www.tiktok.com/@annaboebana/video/6969438539314482437),â went viral, and â[Castaways](https://www.tiktok.com/@basementgang/video/6964483591002705158)â became so popular it reached the top of Spotifyâs global viral chart.

The showâs voice actors, as well as lyricists and composers behind the music, [told BuzzFeed News](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/juliareinstein/castaways-backyardigans-tiktok-song) in June they were moved and amazed to see their work being celebrated so widely years later.
âIâm still floored at how many years have gone by and people are making this a big thing, but I also understand, because I smile every time I think of *The Backyardigans*,â said [Jamia Simone Nash](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/juliareinstein/castaways-backyardigans-tiktok-song), the singing voice behind Uniqua. âBeing a part of everyoneâs childhood, thatâs been the best part of my career.â
## 10\. [Kathryn Hahn](https://www.buzzfeed.com/kaylayandoli/famous-women-filming-sex-scenes) Winking

@maxoupial / Twitter / Via [Twitter: @maxoupial](https://twitter.com/maxoupial/status/1366219479479242752)
[*WandaVision*](https://www.buzzfeed.com/noradominick/agatha-all-along-easter-eggs-details-episode-1-episode-2) was one of the most popular TV shows of the year, so naturally, we got some [memes](https://www.buzzfeed.com/angelicaamartinez/wandavision-tumblr-memes-to-distract-you-until-episode-9) out of it. [Kathryn Hahn winking](https://www.buzzfeed.com/angelicaamartinez/winking-memes-wandavision-kathryn-hahn) became basically the 2021 version of [âsure, Jan](https://www.vulture.com/2015/01/20-years-after-its-release-a-very-brady-meme.html),â and [people](https://twitter.com/Kristen_Arnett/status/1366159863689211905) [got](https://twitter.com/_wchiv/status/1366111879714734082) [really](https://twitter.com/caspoppys/status/1365781536046534664) [creative](https://twitter.com/Browtweaten/status/1366777496906182660) with it.

## 11\. The Feminine Urge

@chrissychlapp / Twitter / Via [Twitter: @chrissychlapp](https://twitter.com/chrissychlapp/status/1457926347536338944)
2021 was all about embracing your femininity when it came to this meme. Starting in October, tweets about onesâ highly specific âfeminine urgesâ â â[to hunt and gather (steal),](https://twitter.com/fringeffect/status/1424916281619369991)â â[to hold your boob when youâre bored](https://twitter.com/ashleysalomons/status/1463319544265596938),â â[to die for Harry Styles](https://twitter.com/floristharrys/status/1462304579702321161)â â were everywhere on the site, and they quickly spread to Instagram and TikTok. Despite the chokehold it had across platforms, the meme actually originated months earlier on [Tumblr](https://coffeeheaux.tumblr.com/post/648476506126974976/the-feminine-urge-to-stab) (a common genesis with these kinds of text-based memes), according to [Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/the-feminine-urge).
## 12\. âNo Childrenâ by the Mountain Goats

A 2002 indie-folk song about divorce may not scream viral TikTok challenge contender, but 2021 finds a way. The depressing tune started taking off on the platform in [October](https://www.tiktok.com/@jamesryanb/video/7015646246698241285) and wound up [spiraling](https://www.tiktok.com/@13leu/video/7018309930927000838) into a [whole](https://www.tiktok.com/@yougetawhaleofawash/video/7022434757988338950) [dance](https://www.tiktok.com/@miken_around/video/7021540955882786054) [trend](https://www.tiktok.com/@brynnford/video/7021703486295313669) (featuring a lot of [cats](https://www.tiktok.com/@kelletubbie/video/7022072253026192646)).
The Mountain Goatsâ lead singer John Darnielle told [Vox](https://www.vox.com/the-goods/22745655/mountain-goats-no-children-tiktok) it felt odd to learn of the virality of âNo Children,â but heâs happy to see a new generation enjoying the bandâs music. âThere is a certain joy in sort of feeling like, well, the kids have got a thing going on that Iâm not going to fully get. But I can just enjoy watching,â he said. âI think people fear getting older and fear that theyâll feel left out, but thereâs a kind of buoyancy in that left-out quality sometimes, if you ride it the right way.â
## 13\. Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and Oprah

Prince Harry and Meghan Markleâs sitdown interview with [Oprah Winfrey](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/stephaniemcneal/meghan-harry-oprah-best-tweets) was undoubtedly one of the biggest TV events of 2021. ## 15\. Berries and Cream

Starburst
If you spent any time on YouTube in the 2000s, you might remember this little lad and his love of berries and cream. The [2007 ad for Starburst](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYX_zhlTDr8) was a viral hit at the time, but this summer, it had something of a renaissance and fully took over TikTok. You could hardly scroll through your feed without getting [rickrolled](https://www.tiktok.com/@_lizzywest/video/7008243824652782853) by the jingle or seeing someone [dancing](https://www.tiktok.com/@yazwrld/video/6994985388989353222) the signature jig.

The original âlittle lad,â performance artist Jack Ferver, even got in on the fun, starting [their own TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@thereallittlelad) account where they dress up and perform as [the iconic character](https://www.tiktok.com/@thereallittlelad/video/7010052853641284870). âWhat I found interesting was writing back to people who were commenting, and really getting into that zone of performing the Little Lad,â Ferver told the [New York Times.](https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/19/arts/dance/berries-and-cream-tik-tok.html) âItâs another performance art piece.â

đ¶ Here comes the boyyyy, hello boy, welcome, there he is, he is here⊠đ¶ This little ad-libbed jingle became one of TikTokâs most wholesome audio memes over the summer when user @june\_banoon posted a [video](https://www.tiktok.com/@june_banoon/video/6979637268126420230) singing it to a neighborâs cat (named Johnny, but who goes by the excellent nickname âMashed Potatoesâ).

@boobshrry / Twitter / Via [Twitter: @boobshrry](https://twitter.com/boobshrry/status/1438356313843589121)
And now, clinching the elusive 2021 title of horniest meme of the year! âMommy. Sorry? Mommy,â first originated in August, when TikTok user @roofjesus said it in a [thirsty post](https://www.tiktok.com/@roofjesus/video/7000558115712158981) about their girlfriend. The audio blew up, especially among [queer](https://www.tiktok.com/@twinkle.t1ts/video/7002656651497016581) [women](https://www.tiktok.com/@haley.n.b00/video/7004550224035335429) on the platform.
But the place the phrase became most ubiquitous was in comment sections; scroll through the comments on any thirst-trappy TikTok and youâre bound to find it. Some have [criticized](https://www.tiktok.com/@keondra.k/video/7004225030875778309) the trend, saying the comments [sexualize people](https://twitter.com/xypillz/status/1461759277920669699) who [didnât ask to be](https://www.tiktok.com/@notcrazyjamjam/video/7011302496668781829).

## 18\. People Kildren

@lawrinkydink / TikTok / Via [tiktok.com](https://www.tiktok.com/@lawrinkydink/video/6963561508051651841)
This kicked off in a TikTok by [@lawrinkydink](https://www.tiktok.com/@lawrinkydink/video/6963561508051651841) from May where he attempts to sing the Black Eyed Peasâ classic âWhere Is the Love?â and gets the lyrics totally wrong, making up words while attempting to remember them. His version goes âchildren peekle, people kildren.â Inspired by the commitment to continue even when clueless, people started making their own videos to it. Like in [this one](https://www.tiktok.com/@slaghtjk/video/6968499948195155205?_t=8OPkTfDSccf&_r=1), a TikTok user counts how many times he uses the same wrong words in the video. In another, someone wrote out the [entire lyrics](https://www.tiktok.com/@tehegracietehe/video/6964207716176776453) and that eventually led to a [really soothing cover](https://www.tiktok.com/@kavyaborra/video/6965721986286832901?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1).
## 19\. Bean Dad

Thereâs an old adage that every day there is a main character of Twitter, and â[the goal is to never be it](https://twitter.com/maplecocaine/status/1080665226410889217).â That goal was promptly fumbled by podcaster John Roderick, or as you more likely know him, âBean Dad,â who on Jan. 2 [tweeted a thread](https://twitter.com/ManiacalV/status/1345870405085573122) about how, as a âteaching moment,â he made his 9-year-old daughter spend hours trying to figure out how to open a can of beans rather than just open it for her himself.
What transpired was a backlash so fierce that â[milkshake ducking](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katienotopoulos/tell-us-how-youll-go-viral-and-well-tell-you-how-youll)â could ostensibly be renamed âbean dadding.â People piled on Roderick, criticizing his parenting and accusing him of child abuse (he [later said](https://reason.com/2021/02/16/bean-dad-child-services-john-roderick-can-opener/) a few even reported him to Child Protective Services). Roderick deleted his account after offensive tweets heâd posted years prior were resurfaced, and he wound up apologizing (both for those tweets, as well as the thread) in a lengthy [blog post](http://www.johnroderick.com/an-apology).
## 20\. White Girl Dancing

Whilst the observation that white girls dance just slightly offbeat with their hands in the air has been long [noted by historians](https://twitter.com/ssashleyy/status/1475711838176247808?s=21), this year it really took off as a meme. Videos of [people dancing](https://www.tiktok.com/@notalexmyers/video/6961855890580393221?_t=8ObnCyyaeaE&_r=1) with their hands in the air, typically to the Calvin Harris song âHow Deep Is Your Love,â [became a meme](https://www.tiktok.com/@sarahxdarrio/video/6974429135548484869?_t=8ObnKbOBOq6&_r=1) in early summer this year. Black people on TikTok then started lifting their White Claws in the air to [do the dance too](https://www.tiktok.com/@lifeoftanyamarie/video/6961169809329360134). One Black TikToker told [Mashable](https://mashable.com/article/tiktok-white-girl-dance-joy) he found the white girl dance to be âfreeing.â
## 21\. Two Guys on the Bus

@ibs\_indistress / Twitter / Via [Twitter: @ibs\_indistress](https://twitter.com/ibs_indistress/status/1462646770744250373)
The meme of the [two people on opposite sides of a bus](https://twitter.com/frequentpuker/status/1461352295086448641?s=20), where one of the passengers gets a view an[d the other does not,](https://twitter.com/ibs_indistress/status/1462646770744250373?s=20) really took off in mid-November. The way it works in meme form is by associating something negative with the sad-faced passenger looking out at the hill and something positive with the lucky fellow looking out at the view. According to [Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/two-guys-on-a-bus), the meme was first used by Brazilian Twitter users and then it made its way to Reddit and eventually back to the English-speaking side of Twitter. Now lots of people have filled in their own texts, [such as sad boy](https://twitter.com/ymmayer/status/1462864233323016204?s=20)âs âpeople remembering their childhoodsâ sitting across from smiling âtheir moms being like âthatâs not how I remember itââ guy.

## 22\. Naur

@FALLENAL1EN / Twitter / Via [Twitter: @FALLENAL1EN](https://twitter.com/FALLENAL1EN/status/1357384851192651776)
âNaurâ is a play on how Australians pronounce the word ânoâ with [stan Twitter](https://twitter.com/DoesLoser/status/1476285478668279817?s=20) really turning it into a ~cool~ way of disagreeing with something. It also became popular through the [TikTok meme](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8KFbqnJ/) based on the Australian TV show *H2O* where people would [remake a scene](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8KFW5G2/) and say âOh naur Cleo.â For those of you who know about the *speaking in italics* meme, ânaurâ is pronounced like the italic version of â*no*.â Or, if youâre Aussie, itâs just [pronounced correctly.](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8KFtoNu/)
BuzzFeed News senior culture writer (and noted Australian) Estelle Tang [explained in her story](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/estelletang/naur-meme-origin) that ânaurââ took off after a viral TikTok where someone screamed it and the comments of that video ended up filled only with the word. People didnât only say ânaurâ with the Aussie twang; they also started making memes about its pronunciation, such as this Normani [tweet that has us wheezing into our Vegemite toast.](https://twitter.com/DojasBigMac/status/1462237912985059330?s=20)

The announcement of the Omicron variant of coronavirus was met with the same exhausted but frenzied energy as Delta: memes. However, this time, thanks to the variantâs nameâs similarity to that of the musician and former lead singer of B2K, the meme potential was even wilder. The internet renamed it âthe Omarion variant,â posting videos and photos of the Californian singer ([he even joined in himself on the tweets](https://twitter.com/Omarion/status/1474550653712166912)). Omarion dancing in the music video for the song aptly named âTouchâ was the [perfect meme](https://twitter.com/Calmzay/status/1471871088669990925?s=20), as was [this one](https://twitter.com/VanLathan/status/1465703020386156551?s=20) riffing off the lyrics from his song âPost to Be.â This moment made the âmy plans vs. the Delta variantâ tweets feel like a lifetime ago.

Imagine this: You are offered millions of dollars and the chance to become immortal. The catch? A giant snail â whose mere touch will kill you instantly â also becomes immortal and will hunt you down for eternity. This hypothetical scenario originated in 2014 on the podcast [*Rooster Teeth*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HINYhLtaaxc) but resurfaced in August in a TikTok from [@benjhandy](https://www.tiktok.com/@benjhandy/video/6993295147874258181). ## 25\. Waking Up in the Morning

Bravo
đ¶Waking up in the morning, thinking about so many thingsâŠđ¶ Easily one of the biggest musical memes of the year, this song could most often be found in TikToks of people revealing their [most](https://www.tiktok.com/@michaelslagel/video/6936954789838245126) [embarrassing](https://www.tiktok.com/@emilyoverlid/video/6941038165952105733) [moments](https://www.tiktok.com/@nevershoutnajah/video/6937760301504892166). It comes from a 2011 episode of [*Real Housewives of New Jersey*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUONWrJ3wLk)*,* during which a thenâ10-year-old Gia Giudice performed an emotional rendition of her made-up song in an effort to convince her mom and uncle to stop fighting.

## 26\. Yassification

If youâve seen [Lin-Manuel Miranda](https://twitter.com/YassifyBot/status/1461021342015365125) with a full contour, the [Quaker Oats](https://twitter.com/YassifyBot/status/1462842666035683331) guy with platinum blonde hair extensions, or all four members of [Weezer](https://twitter.com/YassifyBot/status/1463592694576472067) with lip fillers and a smoky eye, you probably already know this one. One of the biggest LGBTQ memes of the year, â[yassification](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/davidmack/yassify-meme-yassification)â consisted of editing images of famous figures in FaceApp to transform them into the [Instagram Face](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/decade-in-review/the-age-of-instagram-face) version of themselves. The word âyassificationâ (derived from â[yaaas queen](https://www.bustle.com/articles/91565-where-did-yas-queen-come-from-and-why-is-it-taking-over-pop-culture),â the term that [originated with queer people of color](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/sydneethompson/aave-language-appropriation) in 1980s ball culture but [went mainstream](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/heres-the-real-origin-of-the-word-yas_n_578ce747e4b0fa896c3f4306) in the mid-2010s thanks to [*Broad City*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3A1xyy1D0Yk) and a [Lady Gaga fanâs video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Pn0JKmy5-M)) first appeared on Twitter in 2020, according to [Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/yassification), but it wasnât until this November that it fully took off. âYassifiedâ images started bubbling up all over [Twitter](https://twitter.com/pussypearI/status/1457788372303310849) and [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@amtrak/video/7031989944059006254), particularly on the account [@YassifyBot](https://twitter.com/YassifyBot). âThe bottom line is itâs a satire of this ageist technology and insane beauty standards through these artificial intelligence apps,â Adams said.
## 27\. Gorgeous Gorgeous Girls

Hot girl summer may have [come and gone](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/juliareinstein/best-memes-2019-defined), but 2021 was all about being a gorgeous, gorgeous girl. The phrase comes from an August [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@fishdress/video/6999712221525757189), in which user [@fishdress](https://www.tiktok.com/@fishdress) professed that âgorgeous, gorgeous girls love soup.â It went massively viral, and tons of people posted their own versions, with the expression becoming [ubiquitous](https://twitter.com/hazelbarnes_/status/1475260587877797889) on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/kotatattoos/status/1473424467951030277) as well.

## 28\. Milk Crate Challenge

@trez\_Legit / Twitter / Via [Twitter: @trez\_Legit](https://twitter.com/trez_Legit/status/1429207719584616450)
This is a challenge that probably shouldnât have taken off the way it did. The Milk Crate Challenge involved stacking crates into a pyramid and scaling it â often to disastrous results. Doctors advised against it, with some telling the [Washington Post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/08/24/milk-crate-challenge/) they had treated patients whoâd taken part.

People would film themselves walking up the crates like stairs, but because of the lack of stability, many wound up brutally wiping out. Even so, people continued to attempt the challenge, and one woman even [completed it in high heels.](https://twitter.com/Iamcoco78/status/1429610666873303048?s=20)

## 29\. I Know It Ainât the Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion at the Met Gala, Sept. 13, 2021
This meme comes from none other than the queen Keke Palmer, who was the red carpet [presenter for Vogue](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8KF4HTq/) at this yearâs Met Gala. When Megan Thee Stallion walked up, she said, âOh oh oh, I know it ainât⊠I know it ainât the staaallion⊠You know it's your girl!â and the rest was history.

That audio really took off on TikTok when a user [remixed it with a keyboard](https://www.tiktok.com/@contejasmusic/video/7013398847577804037?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id7043777968170141189=). The sound went viral, and users made their own versions in the same format. For example, â[I know it ainât the consequences of my actions](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8w7kCoP/),â which [JoJo Siwa](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8w7S2Qj/) used.
Palmer later addressed the meme in an interview with [Entertainment Tonight](https://www.tiktok.com/@entertainmenttonight/video/7023513932111318277?_t=8OZnV2n67XC&_r=1&is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1). âWhy am I at my job doing that?â she said. âI donât know what it is with me.â

The [red flag meme](https://www.buzzfeed.com/andriamoore/twitter-red-flag-tweet-roundup) is one of the few memes from this year that will definitely make it long term: Itâs short, simple, and memorable. First started on Black Twitter with people naming obvious negative traits someone could have, it quickly escalated from [actual red flags about a person](https://twitter.com/mykelrenee/status/1447758104523943942) to [just straight-up jokes](https://twitter.com/Twitter/status/1448007008670650370). Obviously brand accounts jumped on it like they would any good meme, with [MTV getting ratioed hard](https://twitter.com/WrittenByHanna/status/1448315935757062148?s=20) for their own red flag attempt.

People have used the sound in TikToks about little inside jokes or life hacks they swear by, such as tips for [makeup](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8wvMCee/) or [filming](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8wvB1jc/) [TikToks](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8wvrrjf/). Though her audio went viral, [TikTok somehow removed](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8wvUMwj/) her original video but the sound remained up.

As the trend went on, some people started to use it for things that are either too basic or [ridiculous](https://twitter.com/_Nicksy/status/1475567799091318790?s=20), which has led to people [criticizing](https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8wvXq1k/) the meme.
In case the voice sounds familiar to you, the TikTok user responsible for this sound is also the mastermind behind: â[And by the way, I have a question and donât fight me because I know how you girls like to tussle.](https://www.tiktok.com/@khaenotbae/video/7018554368802835717)â
## 32\. Good Soup

HBO / Via [youtube.com](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUYu7GJ5XKg)
âGood soup,â a meme for when the soup is good (shoutout to my gorgeous, gorgeous girls). The simple audio clip comes from one of the final episodes of [*Girls*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUYu7GJ5XKg)*,* in which Adam Driver and Lena Dunham decide to part ways. Punctuating the emotional conversation held in a diner booth, Driver eats a spoonful of soup, throws up the âOKâ hand sign, and says âgood soup.â Though the episode aired in 2017, it wasnât until [August](https://www.tiktok.com/@visionsvibraniumpubes/video/6996585199316372737) that it made its way to TikTok, and it quickly became a huge meme used to [all](https://www.tiktok.com/@notbradpitt_/video/7000541055481367813) [sorts](https://www.tiktok.com/@myabenway/video/7036588687546731822) of [wacky](https://www.tiktok.com/@the_soup_bae/video/7004066441968307461) [ends](https://www.tiktok.com/@kimpetras/video/7003424519457180933).
In an interview with [Screenrant,](https://screenrant.com/adam-driver-good-soup-meme-tiktok-reaction/) Driver said he was aware of the meme but didnât really get it. âI mean, like I understand what memes are, I guess, but itâs not something I keep track of or am tracking,â he said.
No worries, Adam, thatâs what weâre here for.

Excuse me... in my first comment I used completely the wrong word and undermined myself. I meant "made possessive with 's," not "pluralized."

## 1\. The Stuck Ship
## 7\. Astronaut in the Ocean
đ¶ Whatchu know about rollinâ down in the deep? đ¶ I apologize to everyone who spent all of 2021 on TikTok for getting this stuck in your head again. âAstronaut in the Oceanâ by Australian rapper Masked Wolf came out in 2019 but went hugely viral this year until it felt like it was in almost [every](https://www.tiktok.com/@jayprehistoricpets/video/6944323404954619142) [other](https://www.tiktok.com/@thekiryalife/video/6925453405875883266) TikTok.
The conversation was full of [bombshells](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ellievhall/oprah-meghan-markle-prince-harry-interview-sussex) that left [many stunned](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ellievhall/meghan-markle-oprah-interview-mental-health) â including Winfrey herself, whose expression of shock wound up becoming a [huge](https://twitter.com/hoemoticon/status/1370209121060933634) [reaction](https://twitter.com/Y2SHAF/status/1369371122798649358) [meme](https://twitter.com/fmason3/status/1370734657659092995) on Twitter.
Videos of the potential new members (PNMs) showing off their outfits before each recruitment round went viral, [catapulting](https://www.tiktok.com/@whatwouldjimmybuffettdo/video/6994056773153967365) [some](https://www.tiktok.com/@dollypartonwannabe02/video/6994052858362465542) [of](https://www.tiktok.com/@allylasaly/video/6994495193143594245) [them](https://www.tiktok.com/@blakeannajoy/video/6995323404609916165) [to](https://www.tiktok.com/@hannahdubb/video/6993712315333938438) [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@haygoldenrayofsunshine/video/6995188773927603461) [stardom](https://www.tiktok.com/@shopmoodzandvibez/video/6995154004422446341) [faster](https://www.tiktok.com/@sidnee.beavers/video/6995620394900262150) than you can say â[jewelry is normal](https://slate.com/culture/2021/08/alabama-rush-tiktok-videos-explained.html).â \#BamaRush became such a sensation that people posted [their](https://www.tiktok.com/@sara.watkiss/video/6996115365944102150) [predictions](https://www.tiktok.com/@actually_obsess/video/6996037439043161349) [guessing](https://www.tiktok.com/@bamarushobsessed/video/6996654108732034310) what sorority each PNM would get into, and some dressed up for [parody](https://www.tiktok.com/@rachmartino/video/6996023075095547141) [TikToks](https://www.tiktok.com/@i_delz/video/6994805208417111302) sharing their own âoh oh tee dees.â
## 15\. Berries and Cream
If you spent any time on YouTube in the 2000s, you might remember this little lad and his love of berries and cream.
## 16\. Here Comes the Boy
đ¶ Here comes the boyyyy, hello boy, welcome, there he is, he is here⊠đ¶ This little ad-libbed jingle became one of TikTokâs most wholesome audio memes over the summer when user @june\_banoon posted a [video](https://www.tiktok.com/@june_banoon/video/6979637268126420230) singing it to a neighborâs cat (named Johnny, but who goes by the excellent nickname âMashed Potatoesâ).
Naturally, everyone loved it, and a ton of people made duets, accompanying it on [pianos](https://www.tiktok.com/@alexfromsf/video/6980960251751238918), [guitars,](https://www.tiktok.com/@vincent.l.w/video/6981470051035532549) [violins](https://www.tiktok.com/@kjames827/video/6981501760393317638), [flutes](https://www.tiktok.com/@nikkokeh/video/6981682471913934085), [harps](https://www.tiktok.com/@harpistkari/video/6982213973600963846), and [trumpets](https://www.tiktok.com/@tster_reviews/video/6981480611949055237) and layering on their [own](https://www.tiktok.com/@victor.vye/video/6981507436993580294) [vocal](https://www.tiktok.com/@sloworm/video/6981547034117491974) [harmonies](https://www.tiktok.com/@tianiedacostaa/video/6982349747268914438) until it was transformed into a gorgeous, cumulative symphony.
## 17\. Mommy? Sorry. Mommy?
## 22\. Naur
âNaurâ is a play on how Australians pronounce the word ânoâ with [stan Twitter](https://twitter.com/DoesLoser/status/1476285478668279817?s=20) really turning it into a ~cool~ way of disagreeing with something.
## 24\. Immortal Snail
Imagine this: You are offered millions of dollars and the chance to become immortal. The catch? A giant snail â whose mere touch will kill you instantly â also becomes immortal and will hunt you down for eternity. By October, the immortal snail had became a meme in its own right, with tons of [people](https://www.tiktok.com/@finnocal/video/7021603525721476357) [making](https://www.tiktok.com/@ijocornyjoe/video/7021813158146804997) [TikToks](https://www.tiktok.com/@bryce.luttrell02/video/7021311724167089455) about it (usually paired with John Lennonâs â[Happy Xmas (War Is Over)](https://www.tiktok.com/@em.alexi/video/7023506272083381510),â for inexplicable reasons) depicting their eternal hell evading the slimy menaceâs [slow but unrelenting pursuit.](https://www.tiktok.com/@snail_woods/video/7022979189288586502)
## 25\. Waking Up in the Morning
đ¶Waking up in the morning, thinking about so many thingsâŠđ¶ Easily one of the biggest musical memes of the year, this song could most often be found in TikToks of people revealing their [most](https://www.tiktok.com/@michaelslagel/video/6936954789838245126) [embarrassing](https://www.tiktok.com/@emilyoverlid/video/6941038165952105733) [moments](https://www.tiktok.com/@nevershoutnajah/video/6937760301504892166).
The nowâ20-year-old took her belated viral fame in stride, posting [her own TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@giagiudicexx/video/6944206049700285702) in March lip-synching to it. In an [interview with Andy Cohen](https://www.tiktok.com/@tharealmike/video/6961164799648550150) on *Watch What Happens Live*, Giudice said she never imagined her song would blow up a decade later, âbut honestly, I think itâs so funny and Iâm just owning it at this point.â
Denver Adams, the 22-year-old art student behind the account, [told BuzzFeed News](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/davidmack/yassify-meme-yassification) in November that they hope their creations make people consider how apps like FaceApp can contribute to unhealthy beauty standards.
âThe bottom line is itâs a satire of this ageist technology and insane beauty standards through these artificial intelligence apps,â Adams said.
The markers of a gorgeous, gorgeous girl vary widely, but may include loving [pickles](https://www.tiktok.com/@marwasammi/video/7043131685025844527), taking the [train](https://www.tiktok.com/@jessicaluxee/video/7040983848359939334) because they canât drive, listening to [Simple Plan](https://www.tiktok.com/@simpleplan/video/7043925027661663493), having [stomach problems](https://www.tiktok.com/@gold.a.star/video/7042028655517879598), adopting [pit bulls](https://www.tiktok.com/@beautyandthebulldozer/video/7042905961832434949), getting their [booster shot](https://www.tiktok.com/@marycjskinner/video/7041317341128363311), and pretending âto be [Beth March dying of scarlet fever](https://www.tiktok.com/@lottiemaeokill/video/7044624882272947462) every time theyâre near the sea.â Really, anyone can be a gorgeous, gorgeous girl if they decide they are one.
## 28\. Milk Crate Challenge
This is a challenge that probably shouldnât have taken off the way it did. The Milk Crate Challenge involved stacking crates into a pyramid and scaling it â often to disastrous results.
The internet did its bit to warn people of the danger, with the best meme PSA being, of course, the edit of [âJason Deruloâ tumbling down the crates](https://twitter.com/benwassertweet/status/1429600360155471874?s=20).
## 29\. I Know It Ainât the Stallion
## 30\. Red Flags
## 31\. The Girls That Get It, Get It
âGood soup,â a meme for when the soup is good (shoutout to my gorgeous, gorgeous girls).
