| Boilerpipe Text | In 2026, we gotta do what we gotta do to save a dollar. And if you think you're frugal, honey, buckle up, because there are about 1,000 people out there doing way more frugal shit than you are, so get ready to take some notes.
1.
"I found a pamphlet at my library that mapped out all fruits/nuts on public land in my city. I didn't buy any fruit or nuts that year. Close second was cleaning raw wool for crafts, though it did take all the finish off my table."
2.
"We canceled curbside trash pickup. We have a compost bin and recycling, and the state has a trash site that accepts 33-gallon trash bags for $1 each. We went from spending over $70/month to less than $10."

alcohall183
3.
"When my ignition broke, instead of fixing it, I pop-started my car (manual transmission). I'd have to park very strategically in order to get a rolling start. Drove it that way for a whole year."
4.
"I bought a used mini fridge for $10 to keep in my cubicle at work to take FULL advantage of catering leftovers from meetings."

5.
"My frugal late father was nuts about saving money. He would go on vacation, collect cans in other states, and bring them home in a huge garbage bag to get the nickel in our state (my mother was horrified). He also once got me new windshield wipers for my car when I was home on college break. When I went out to the car, I noticed the driver's-side wiper was new, while the other side was still the old one. When I asked him, he said I only needed one (he had gotten it at the salvage yard), and there was no need to look out the other side of the windshield, haha. He was the best."
6.
"My mom got our teeth cleaned for free every year because 'the first cleaning is free' was an incentive at different local dentists. She rotated between the three of them every year. By the third year, they didnāt have our files anymore, so we were 'new' patients and got free cleanings."

7.
"I live in a rural area, so internet was around $110 a month. I got rid of that and all of my streaming services. I didnāt have a large amount of data available on my phone, so I pretty much stopped scrolling to save it for when I needed Google Maps and whatnot. I effectively cut off 90% of the ads I was seeing on a daily basis, I stopped buying junk that I was influenced into thinking I needed, and I didnāt feel the FOMO anymore, so it helped me to stop feeling the ⨠need ⨠to buy stuff. It got a lot easier to save money, and if I was bored, Iād clean the house or read a book. Life became significantly less stressful."
8.
"Growing up, we had no AC, no heat, and no cable TV. We had very frugal meals of tomato soup and grilled cheese, and we all drove 20-year-old cars. However, my dad paid cash to send all three of us to private college and also left us money when he died, having been saving it away for decades. What a guy."

9.
"We learned to make all of our carbs from scratch. Sandwich bread, hamburger buns, tortillas, French bread, hotdog buns, sourdough, all of it. My poor family had to endure tons of really shitty bread for months, lol."

10.
"I sold my car and became a bicycle commuter...in Houston, Texas. 0/10 would not recommend. Motorists actually
try
to clip you with their side mirrors."
11.
"I got rid of my dryer and now hang up my clothes inside to dry."
āu/
FlackerLady
12.
"I was really short on cash and needed to get the best gas mileage possible out of my car until my next couple of paydays hit. Think driving without using your brakes, throwing the gear into neutral and coasting as long as possible (I had a stick shift), keeping windows closed to reduce wind resistance, etc. I don't remember the exact numbers, but it increased my MPG by around 50%."
āu/

13.
"In college, I lived with four other girls in a suite that shared one bathroom. Instead of buying our own toilet paper, when we were out, one of us would swipe a roll from the bathrooms in the building where our classes were. The building janitors must have gotten wise because they started keeping the rolls elsewhere and started locking the dispensers. So we would keep the cardboard tubes from previous rolls and sit in the school bathrooms, rolling the TP around them like it was our job."
14.
"I quit drinking, quit smoking, and left the US, so I quit driving a car as well."

15.
"About three years ago, I decided to meal prep and eat beans for lunch every day at work. I did it mostly for health reasons. I would buy a pack of dried beans and cook them into some sort of big batch of food every Sunday. Sometimes it would be soup, sometimes chili, sometimes falafel, etc. I would divide it up into Tupperware and take one with me to work every day. Iāve been doing this for three years now, and I am shocked by the time and money savings. A pound of dried beans costs about $2. A 50-pound bag of beans for only $15. Now, I am paying about $0.50 per meal. I probably save $40 or $50 a week, $200 a month, and $2,400 a year."
16.
"When I was in college, at the end of the year, after everyone moved out of dorms for the summer, my roommate and I (who lived off-campus year-round) dumpster dived and collected all the still-good food people tossed, and stocked up. We made a pact not to buy groceries for a month after this yearly event."
āu/
Maximum-Term2599
17.
"I've been cutting my own hair for many years now; endless money savings and no more haircuts from people who don't listen to what I want!"
18.
"Probably my wildest was taking the two turkey carcasses from both my family's Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving to make stock with. Itās literally free. And I got a SHITLOAD of turkey stock from those two carcasses. If I had bought the same amount, it easily would have been over $20 and not as tasty! Our friends were a little confused and gave us some strange looks, but ultimately told me to go for it, lol."

19.
"I got divorced. It was a lot of money up front; lost half my savings, half my home equity, and half my 401k. However, within a couple of years, I built all that back up plus more. He was a spender, and I was a saver. Leaving him has put me in a much better financial situation than I was ever in before."
20.
"My mom used to travel a lot for work, and sheād stay in hotels every time. I had her collect all the travel soaps, lotions, shampoos, and conditioners, and I used them exclusively for an entire year while in college."
āu/
jrkessle
21.
"Dumpster dived a broken patio umbrella to fix and sell. All that was wrong was that a couple of the ribs were bent. So I straightened them by hand and put them on Craigslist for $20."
22.
"In college, my husband would go to Home Depot and pretend to be a contractor to get free coffee, and occasionally they had free hot dogs."
āu/
Alarming_Abroad_4862
23.
"Since I use Ibotta to scan my receipts for rebates, I often grab any extra receipts abandoned at the self-checkout. I would say about 25% of the time thereās a rebate that I can identify just by eyeballing it."
24.
"I havenāt bought Ziploc bags in a few years. Wash and reuse!"
āu/
divinbuff
25.
"Itās a product of me growing up poor, but I still empty the salt, pepper, and ketchup packets from fast food joints into our regular containers."
26.
"In college, I would buy my college books and go to Kinkos at 2 a.m., copy entire books, make extra copies, return my book before the deadline, and sell the other copies I made."

And finally, "I reuse browser tabs instead of opening new ones. š¤"

## In 2026, we gotta do what we gotta do to save a dollar. And if you think you're frugal, honey, buckle up, because there are about 1,000 people out there doing way more frugal shit than you are, so get ready to take some notes.
## Recently, Reddit user [Random\_Username\_4242](https://www.reddit.com/user/Random_Username_4242/) asked, ["Whatās the most insanely frugal thing youāve ever done?"](https://www.reddit.com/r/Frugal/comments/1q70obe/whats_the_most_insanely_frugal_thing_youve_ever/) Now, I've seen a lot of money-saving advice in my years, but so many of these suggestions and stories were brand new to me. Like, people are really out here using their *minds*! Here's the best of what everyone had to share:
## 1\. "I found a pamphlet at my library that mapped out all fruits/nuts on public land in my city. I didn't buy any fruit or nuts that year. Close second was cleaning raw wool for crafts, though it did take all the finish off my table."

Still doing these things. Make a menu for the week, order for store pickup and only buy what I need and has to be on sale. Use loyalty cards and coupons. Never use coins, save, wrap and deposit into savings account yearly, around \$250.00 per year. Don't follow fashion trends. My thermostat...

My sister-in-law married a divorced man with two children and she was (and still is such a cheapskate) that one day when the kids where having lunch, she boiled some water in a pan and added ketchup to make ātomato soupā. Her husband saw that and said we arenāt poor ā buy some cans...

We used to dumpster dive outside the dorms when my dad was in college. Those kids would throw stuff away rather than pack. Got brand new Arrow shirts still folded with the pins in and all sorts of other things. We also went to railroad salvage. Things where the packing container...

About 15 years ago, I set myself a challenge to spend less than £2 per day (£14 per week). Any additional money left over on Sunday could be spent on a beer. It was surprisingly easy, and I continue to set very tight budgets now (about £23 per week) which is still very achievable.

I do something similar. I order my groceries online to be delivered (necessary for health reasons). There is a minimum order of 60⬠and on one day of the week delivery is free. By placing an order every two weeks and not going over 60ā¬, I only spend 30⬠per week on groceries (plus...

| Readable Markdown | ## In 2026, we gotta do what we gotta do to save a dollar. And if you think you're frugal, honey, buckle up, because there are about 1,000 people out there doing way more frugal shit than you are, so get ready to take some notes.
## 1\. "I found a pamphlet at my library that mapped out all fruits/nuts on public land in my city. I didn't buy any fruit or nuts that year. Close second was cleaning raw wool for crafts, though it did take all the finish off my table."
## 2\. "We canceled curbside trash pickup. We have a compost bin and recycling, and the state has a trash site that accepts 33-gallon trash bags for \$1 each. We went from spending over \$70/month to less than \$10."
āu/[alcohall183](https://www.reddit.com/r/Frugal/comments/1q70obe/comment/nyigg1h/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
## 3\. "When my ignition broke, instead of fixing it, I pop-started my car (manual transmission). I'd have to park very strategically in order to get a rolling start. Drove it that way for a whole year."
## 4\. "I bought a used mini fridge for \$10 to keep in my cubicle at work to take FULL advantage of catering leftovers from meetings."
āu/[atticwife](https://www.reddit.com/r/Frugal/comments/1q70obe/comment/nyhklac/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
## 6\. "My mom got our teeth cleaned for free every year because 'the first cleaning is free' was an incentive at different local dentists. She rotated between the three of them every year. By the third year, they didnāt have our files anymore, so we were 'new' patients and got free cleanings."
āu/[Alarming\_Abroad\_4862](https://www.reddit.com/r/Frugal/comments/1q70obe/comment/nyii2g3/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
## 7\. "I live in a rural area, so internet was around \$110 a month.

## 9\. "We learned to make all of our carbs from scratch. Sandwich bread, hamburger buns, tortillas, French bread, hotdog buns, sourdough, all of it. My poor family had to endure tons of really shitty bread for months, lol."

## 10\. "I sold my car and became a bicycle commuter...in Houston, Texas. 0/10 would not recommend. Motorists actually *try* to clip you with their side mirrors."
## 11\. "I got rid of my dryer and now hang up my clothes inside to dry."

## 14\. "I quit drinking, quit smoking, and left the US, so I quit driving a car as well."

## 15\. A pound of dried beans costs about \$2. A 50-pound bag of beans for only \$15. Now, I am paying about \$0.50 per meal. I probably save \$40 or \$50 a week, \$200 a month, and \$2,400 a year."
## 16\. "When I was in college, at the end of the year, after everyone moved out of dorms for the summer, my roommate and I (who lived off-campus year-round) dumpster dived and collected all the still-good food people tossed, and stocked up. We made a pact not to buy groceries for a month after this yearly event."

## 17\. "I've been cutting my own hair for many years now; endless money savings and no more haircuts from people who don't listen to what I want!"
## 18\. "Probably my wildest was taking the two turkey carcasses from both my family's Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving to make stock with. Itās literally free. And I got a SHITLOAD of turkey stock from those two carcasses. If I had bought the same amount, it easily would have been over \$20 and not as tasty! Our friends were a little confused and gave us some strange looks, but ultimately told me to go for it, lol."

## 19\. "I got divorced. It was a lot of money up front; lost half my savings, half my home equity, and half my 401k. However, within a couple of years, I built all that back up plus more. He was a spender, and I was a saver. Leaving him has put me in a much better financial situation than I was ever in before."
## 20\. "My mom used to travel a lot for work, and sheād stay in hotels every time. I had her collect all the travel soaps, lotions, shampoos, and conditioners, and I used them exclusively for an entire year while in college."

## 21\. "Dumpster dived a broken patio umbrella to fix and sell. All that was wrong was that a couple of the ribs were bent. So I straightened them by hand and put them on Craigslist for \$20."
## 22\. "In college, my husband would go to Home Depot and pretend to be a contractor to get free coffee, and occasionally they had free hot dogs."

## 23\. "Since I use Ibotta to scan my receipts for rebates, I often grab any extra receipts abandoned at the self-checkout. I would say about 25% of the time thereās a rebate that I can identify just by eyeballing it."
## 24\. "I havenāt bought Ziploc bags in a few years. Wash and reuse!"

## 25\. "Itās a product of me growing up poor, but I still empty the salt, pepper, and ketchup packets from fast food joints into our regular containers."
## 26\. "In college, I would buy my college books and go to Kinkos at 2 a.m., copy entire books, make extra copies, return my book before the deadline, and sell the other copies I made."
