Here we have the complete guide on basic grips for beginners! Gripping a badminton racket correctly is essential for control, power, and injury prevention. Here’s a step-by-step guide to the main grips used in badminton:
badminton racket grip types
forehand grip badminton
Used for most forehand shots like clears, smashes, and drives.
How to grip:
Hold the racket as if you're shaking hands with it.
The racket face should be flat to the floor.
Place your thumb against the wider bevel (the handle) and your index finger a little apart, forming a V shape between your thumb and index finger.
Maintain a relaxed hold — not too tight.
📌
Tip:
Your grip should feel like holding a hammer or giving a handshake.
backhand grip badminton
Used for backhand shots, especially in the rear and mid-court.
How to grip:
Start from the forehand grip.
Rotate the racket slightly so your thumb rests along the flat angle (bevel) at the back of the handle.
Your thumb should be pushing against the back for leverage and control.
📌
Tip:
This grip provides extra push from the thumb for backhand shots.
panhandle grip
Used for net kills and drives, especially when the shuttle is in front of you.
How to grip:
Hold the racket like a frying pan — fingers wrapped around, thumb not extended.
The racket face will be more open.
📌
Caution:
Not suitable for clears or smashes as it limits wrist flexibility.
