| Boilerpipe Text | At 78, Donald Trump is the oldest major party presidential nominee in American history. But voters probably arenât hearing much about that even though Trump is nearly 20 years older than Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent.
With the dearth of headlines and punditry about Trumpâs age, it appears that President Bidenâs departure from the race in July didnât just flip the age issue. It erased it entirely.
Thatâs hardly surprising since so much coverage about the ages of the Democratic and Republican contenders was overwhelmingly focused on Biden and his mental acuity â and that was before his troubling debate performance in June.

In a poll by
The Economist/YouGov
taken in September 2023, 57 percent of respondents said that Bidenâs health and age would âseverely limitâ his ability to govern the nation for a second term. By comparison, only 30 percent said the same about Trump even though Biden is only three years older.

Never mind that Trump is a gaffe machine who has mixed up former House speaker Nancy Pelosi and Nikki Haley, his former UN ambassador; confused Barack Obama for Biden; and goes off on tangents about sharks,
movie cannibal Hannibal Lecter
, and claims that wind farms are leading
to lower bacon consumption
.
When Harris declared her candidacy, there was a common belief that the significant age difference between the vice president and Trump â the largest since Obama, then 47, successfully ran against Republican Arizona senator John McCain, 72, in 2008 â would raise more questions and concerns about Trumpâs physical and mental fitness for the job and it would finally get more attention.
For several reasons, that hasnât happened.
With Harris still part of an administration led by the oldest sitting president in this nationâs history, sheâs in no position to hammer Trump on his age. Calling Trumpâs ideas and proposed policies old-fashioned are one thing; calling him too old to be president is another. Instead Harris lets her campaign slogan â âWe are not going backâ â make the case that Trumpâs antiquated (not to mention dangerous) ideas would drag this country âbackwardâ into an era of fewer rights and deeper inequality.
After referring to Biden as âSleepy Joeâ for months and slamming him as too enfeebled to serve a second term, Trump lost a favorite talking point when the president dropped out. He certainly canât make the same case against Harris, 59, or Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, 60, this nationâs first Generation X presidential ticket.
One reason Trump might have chosen Senator JD Vance of Ohio, 40, as his running mate was to help deflect attention from his own age. But Vance, who has a
documented history of hateful comments
and made something as basic as an
impromptu campaign stop at a Georgia
doughnut shop
completely cringeworthy, has been less of an asset and more of a liability for Trump.
Of course, there are so many reasons to fear four more years of Trump, the only president to incite a deadly insurrection because he lost an election, his age â or the possible mental ravages from it â seem to pale in comparison.
With his
poll numbers dipping
, Trumpâs desperation is spiraling. With an Election Day whose arrival can be counted in weeks instead of months, Trump is saying whatever he deems necessary to garner both media attention and the loyalty of his base.
At a recent summit for the far-right group
Moms for Liberty
, Trump assailed gender-affirming health care and said the country is being âpoisonedâ by immigrants who are âtaking diseaseâ into classrooms.
His supposed
flip-flop on abortion access
and a
pledge to make IVF treatments free
was pathetic and phony. It was nothing more than Trump, who says that heâs
âproudâ
of his role in helping to scuttle nearly a half-century of reproductive health care, attempting to look less extreme on an issue that has been a Republican albatross since the conservative-led Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Trumpâs geyser of lies never runs dry. The more he senses that his election chances may be slipping away, his errant behavior, promises, and comments will break all records for outrageousness. That seems less a product of his age than the moral decay that has defined his life.
By comparison, 78 ainât nothing but a number. But there are other numbers connected to this election that are far more important for voters to consider â Trumpâs conviction on 34 felonies; that
abortion will be on the ballot in 10 states
; and a pathway to the 270 Electoral College votes Harris will need to save this nation from the dystopia of another Trump presidency.

# Why age is no longer an issue in the presidential election
## Donald Trumpâs behavior is so abhorrent that his age has been reduced to nothing but a number.

| Readable Markdown | At 78, Donald Trump is the oldest major party presidential nominee in American history.

In a poll by [The Economist/YouGov](https://docs.cdn.yougov.com/8ssfdycdra/econtoplines.pdf) taken in September 2023, 57 percent of respondents said that Bidenâs health and age would âseverely limitâ his ability to govern the nation for a second term. By comparison, only 30 percent said the same about Trump even though Biden is only three years older.

Never mind that Trump is a gaffe machine who has mixed up former House speaker Nancy Pelosi and Nikki Haley, his former UN ambassador; confused Barack Obama for Biden; and goes off on tangents about sharks, [movie cannibal Hannibal Lecter](https://www.washingtonpost.com/video/politics/trump-keeps-talking-about-the-late-great-hannibal-lecter/2024/08/14/638eb545-60df-4b9c-98eb-352b2970459c_video.html), and claims that wind farms are leading [to lower bacon consumption](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/aug/30/trump-blames-bacon-prices-wind-energy-wisconsin-rally).
But Vance, who has a [documented history of hateful comments](https://www.axios.com/2024/08/28/vance-randi-weingarten-childless-cat-ladies) and made something as basic as an [impromptu campaign stop at a Georgia](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/jd-vance-blames-staff-viral-donut-shop-visit.html) [doughnut shop](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/jd-vance-blames-staff-viral-donut-shop-visit.html) completely cringeworthy, has been less of an asset and more of a liability for Trump.
Of course, there are so many reasons to fear four more years of Trump, the only president to incite a deadly insurrection because he lost an election, his age â or the possible mental ravages from it â seem to pale in comparison.
With his [poll numbers dipping](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/09/03/poll-dems-boosted-gop-shaken-as-harris-trump-race-is-joined/74995919007/), Trumpâs desperation is spiraling. With an Election Day whose arrival can be counted in weeks instead of months, Trump is saying whatever he deems necessary to garner both media attention and the loyalty of his base.
At a recent summit for the far-right group [Moms for Liberty](https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2024-08-31/trump-questions-acceptance-of-transgender-people-as-he-courts-his-base-at-moms-for-liberty-gathering), Trump assailed gender-affirming health care and said the country is being âpoisonedâ by immigrants who are âtaking diseaseâ into classrooms.
His supposed [flip-flop on abortion access](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trumps-many-abortion-positions-timeline-rcna146601) and a [pledge to make IVF treatments free](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-says-wants-make-ivf-treatments-paid-government-insurance-compani-rcna168804) was pathetic and phony. It was nothing more than Trump, who says that heâs [âproudâ](https://www.cbsnews.com/video/trump-says-hes-proud-of-role-in-overturning-roe-v-wade/) of his role in helping to scuttle nearly a half-century of reproductive health care, attempting to look less extreme on an issue that has been a Republican albatross since the conservative-led Supreme Court overturned Roe v.
But there are other numbers connected to this election that are far more important for voters to consider â Trumpâs conviction on 34 felonies; that [abortion will be on the ballot in 10 states](https://19thnews.org/2023/12/abortion-states-election-2024-ballot-measures/); and a pathway to the 270 Electoral College votes Harris will need to save this nation from the dystopia of another Trump presidency.
