Why do plants need water? Did you know that a plant’s cells are made up of around 80-90% water? This is what helps them to stay upright and hold their shape/volume. Just like humans, plants are living things that need water to survive, grow and stay healthy and upright. They also need water for photosynthesis so they can create energy. Plus, the water we give to plants helps to deliver essential nutrients that are needed for growth from the soil. How often do indoor plants need watering? How often you water your plants will depend on the plant itself. Some may need watering every few days, others will need to be watered once or twice a week and some plants who prefer a dry climate can get away with being watered just once a month. When your plant arrives, make sure you read the care instructions carefully which will tell you all you need to know about when to water your plant. Here are some of the most popular houseplants and how often to water them: Succulents - water once every 7-10 days. Snake plant - water once every 10-15 days making sure the soil is dry between waterings. Rubber plant - water every 7-10 days, and every 14 days in the winter (this plant holds a lot of moisture and is very susceptible to root rot if overwatered.) Peace lily - water every 5-7 days and keep moist in-between waterings throughout summer growth season, and then pull back in winter. Orchid - water every 5-10 days but spritz it daily to keep it moist. What is the best time to water plants? Yes, it’s true, there really is a best time of the day to water your plants. And it’s very important to water your plants at this time to get the most from them. Ideally, you’ll want to water your houseplants first thing in the morning. This allows the plant to absorb all the water before the day gets too hot. In the summer months, you must make sure your plants are watered before the sun is at its highest point. Otherwise, the sun can easily evaporate the water before your plant gets a chance to enjoy it. It’s also recommended to water your plants in the morning instead of the evening because when it gets dark, the plant won’t take it in. This means your plant will just be sitting in water until the sun comes up again which can lead to all kinds of issues like pests and root rot. Our top tips for watering plants To help your plants reach their full potential, here are some of our top plant watering tips: Use a watering can This is more for your benefit than the plants, but using a drinking glass will likely result in the water spilling over the edge and onto the windowsill, floor or table. Plus, with a watering can, you can be much more precise and water your plant right at the base. Choose the right potting mix Whatever you do, don’t just grab some soil from your garden and put it in a pot. Soil alone is merely the dirt outside that has no usable nutrients left in it, and not suitable for houseplants. Houseplants need a special indoor potting mix that’s designed for a specific type of plant. Using the right soil can prevent any disease or pests from hurting your plant. Water plants less in winter and more in spring During the winter where the days are shorter, houseplants tend to get less light and so need less water. In the spring, the longer days are a signal for the plant to start growing again and so more water will be needed to help. Reduced watering is because plants are growing at a slower rate or dormant and no longer growing, because of the lesser light. Going on holiday soon? It’s the age-old question that both plant newbies and plant fanatics have asked over and over - how often should you water your plants? While it may seem simple, it’s actually a careful balancing act. Too much water and they’ll die, too little and they’ll wither. But, when you find the perfect watering schedule, you’ll be rewarded with healthy, long-living and happy houseplants. ![](https://images.ctfassets.net/1d9ajmvjpuhw/43cWFQ9yg533tKowWLtlMH/0df0e603bc94924f79f83035d3cd7349/1694171707384-Bloom___Wild_-_large_plants.png?w=480&h=480&fm=webp&q=75) ## Why do plants need water? In the summer months, you must make sure your plants are watered before the sun is at its highest point. Otherwise, the sun can easily evaporate the water before your plant gets a chance to enjoy it. It’s also recommended to water your plants in the morning instead of the evening because when it gets dark, the plant won’t take it in. This means your plant will just be sitting in water until the sun comes up again which can lead to all kinds of issues like pests and root rot. ## Our top tips for watering plants To help your plants reach their full potential, here are some of our top plant watering tips: ### Use a watering can This is more for your benefit than the plants, but using a drinking glass will likely result in the water spilling over the edge and onto the windowsill, floor or table. Plus, with a watering can, you can be much more precise and water your plant right at the base. ### Choose the right potting mix Whatever you do, don’t just grab some soil from your garden and put it in a pot. Soil alone is merely the dirt outside that has no usable nutrients left in it, and not suitable for houseplants. Houseplants need a special indoor potting mix that’s designed for a specific type of plant. Using the right soil can prevent any disease or pests from hurting your plant. ### Water plants less in winter and more in spring During the winter where the days are shorter, houseplants tend to get less light and so need less water. In the spring, the longer days are a signal for the plant to start growing again and so more water will be needed to help. Reduced watering is because plants are growing at a slower rate or dormant and no longer growing, because of the lesser light. Going on holiday soon?
