Total Time: 30 minutes Skill Level: Beginner Estimated Cost: $15 Grime can accumulate inside of a washing machine when dirt from clothes, towels, and sheets is left behind. Without regular cleaning , washing machines can trap leftover detergent, hard-water deposits, and mold or mildew around the lid. This buildup may leave a residue on laundry or cause a funky smell. In order to keep your clothes and linens as clean as possible , it's important to clean your washing machine once per month. The following steps will guide you through cleaning both front-loading and top-loading machines, with careful attention to their unique needs. Credit: Jacob Fox What You'll Need Equipment / Tools Old toothbrush or one dedicated to cleaning Microfiber cleaning cloth Absorbent towel Materials Distilled white vinegar Instructions How to Clean a Washing Machine If your washing machine features a self-clean cycle, then you should simply select that option and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. For machines without this convenient feature, you should follow these easy steps to remove buildup from the hoses and drum , which helps keep your laundry smelling fresh. Credit: Jacob Fox Run a Hot Cycle with Vinegar Start the cleaning process by running an empty hot water cycle, using two cups of distilled white vinegar instead of detergent. Pour the vinegar into the detergent dispenser. This combination of hot water and vinegar helps remove and prevent bacteria growth while acting as a deodorizer that will eliminate any musty odors. While vinegar is safe for occasional use in your washing machine, using this product excessively may harm rubber parts over time. Always opt for distilled white vinegar because it contains a lower level of acetic acid compared to regular white vinegar. Credit: Jacob Fox Scrub Inside of Washing Machine Next, you should create a cleaning solution by mixing 1/4 cup of vinegar with a quart of warm water in a bucket or sink. Use a sponge and a dedicated toothbrush to scrub the interior of the washing machine, with extra attention to the detergent and fabric softener dispensers, the inside of the door, and the edges. If the dispensers can be removed from the machine, consider soaking them in your vinegar solution before scrubbing. Credit: Jacob Fox Clean Washing Machine Exterior Don't forget to wipe down the exterior of the machine as well. Use a damp cloth moistened with your vinegar and water solution to leave the area sparkling clean. Credit: Jacob Fox Run a Second Hot Cycle Next, you should run another hot water cycle with the machine empty—no detergent or vinegar is needed this time. For extra cleaning power, you can sprinkle half a cup of baking soda directly into the drum. After the cycle finishes, wipe the drum with a microfiber cloth to catch any leftover residue. How to Clean a Top-Loading Washing Machine In order to tackle hard-to-reach areas in your top-loading washing machine, try following these helpful tips. Pause Cycle and Soak with Vinegar To clean a top-loading washer, consider pausing the machine during the first hot-water cycle outlined above. Allow the tub to fill and agitate for about one minute, then pause the cycle for an hour to let the vinegar soak. Clean Hard-to-Reach Spots Use a toothbrush to scrub hard-to-reach spots around the lid and under the rim of the tub. Dust and Clean the Exterior Top-loading washing machines also tend to collect more dust than front-loaders. To remove dust or detergent splatters, wipe the top of the machine and the dials using a microfiber cloth dipped in white vinegar. How to Clean a Front-Loading Washing Machine When it comes to front-loading washing machines , the gasket, or rubber seal around the door, is usually the culprit behind musty-smelling laundry. Moisture and leftover detergent can create a breeding ground for mold and mildew, so it's important to clean this area regularly. Credit: Jacob Fox Clean the Gasket To remove grime, spray the area around the door with distilled white vinegar and let it sit with the door open for at least one minute before wiping clean with a microfiber cloth. Credit: Jacob Fox Prevent Mold and Mildew For a deeper clean, you can also wipe the area with a diluted bleach solution . To prevent mold or mildew growth, leave the door open for a few hours after each wash to let the moisture dry out. What Causes Smells in Your Washing Machine? Funky smells can build up in both top and front-loading machines when dirt, soap scum, and debris collect in your machine's seals, nooks, and crannies causing mildew, bacteria, and mold to form. This is especially true of front-loading machines, where the door gasket becomes a breeding ground for icky smells. To combat the stink, be sure you are using the proper detergent for your machine, and don’t add more than the recommended amount. Excess soap will leave a residue that can attract more dirt and amplify bacteria growth. It’s also a good idea to leave the machine door open for a few hours after each load to allow excess moisture to evaporate. Best Products for Cleaning a Washing Machine Washing machine cleaning tablets like Affresh and liquid washing machine cleaners offer an alternative solution to use for monthly cleaning. However, steps should still be taken to clean the gasket and exterior, and often, vinegar is a more affordable option.

2. ![How to clean a washing machine - step 2]() ![How to clean a washing machine - step 2](https://www.bhg.com/thmb/pD1twwE7njrZvz7hD9Qs5S7J4f4=/4000x0/filters:no_upscale\(\):strip_icc\(\)/BHG-How-to-Clean-a-Washing-Machine-Step-02-56821d70ff644b769ad87bc0cfed78ff.jpg) Credit: Jacob Fox ### Scrub Inside of Washing Machine Next, you should create a cleaning solution by mixing 1/4 cup of vinegar with a quart of warm water in a bucket or sink. 3. ![How to clean a washing machine - step 3]() ![How to clean a washing machine - step 3](https://www.bhg.com/thmb/c6gzjHO4FNt-x7QbA1Frw6PO8hA=/4324x0/filters:no_upscale\(\):strip_icc\(\)/BHG-How-To-Clean-a-Washing-Machine-Step-03-70c4613db7784f549f022c764836dfb6.jpg) Credit: Jacob Fox ### Clean Washing Machine Exterior Don't forget to wipe down the exterior of the machine as well. Use a damp cloth moistened with your vinegar and water solution to leave the area sparkling clean. 4. ![How to clean a washing machine - step 4]() ![How to clean a washing machine - step 4](https://www.bhg.com/thmb/RiYakzpldAAj7oMKclorzShrH8c=/4324x0/filters:no_upscale\(\):strip_icc\(\)/BHG-How-To-Clean-a-Washing-Machine-Step-04-25710515b7504a14999c461631ee71d7.jpg) Credit: Jacob Fox ### Run a Second Hot Cycle Next, you should run another hot water cycle with the machine empty—no detergent or vinegar is needed this time. For extra cleaning power, you can sprinkle half a cup of baking soda directly into the drum. After the cycle finishes, wipe the drum with a microfiber cloth to catch any leftover residue. ## How to Clean a Top-Loading Washing Machine In order to tackle hard-to-reach areas in your top-loading washing machine, try following these helpful tips. 1. ### Pause Cycle and Soak with Vinegar To clean a top-loading washer, consider pausing the machine during the first [hot-water cycle](https://www.bhg.com/what-to-wash-on-hot-8712352) outlined above. Allow the tub to fill and agitate for about one minute, then pause the cycle for an hour to let the vinegar soak. 2. ### Clean Hard-to-Reach Spots Use a toothbrush to scrub hard-to-reach spots around the lid and under the rim of the tub. 3. ### Dust and Clean the Exterior Top-loading washing machines also tend to collect more dust than front-loaders. To remove dust or detergent splatters, wipe the top of the machine and the dials using a microfiber cloth dipped in white vinegar. ## How to Clean a Front-Loading Washing Machine When it comes to [front-loading washing machines](https://www.bhg.com/front-load-vs-top-load-washer-7377255), the gasket, or rubber seal around the door, is usually the culprit behind [musty-smelling](https://www.bhg.com/mildew-smell-causes-11711059) laundry. Moisture and leftover detergent can create a breeding ground for mold and mildew, so it's important to clean this area regularly. To prevent mold or mildew growth, leave the door open for a few hours after each wash to let the moisture dry out. ## What Causes Smells in Your Washing Machine? Funky smells can build up in both top and front-loading machines when dirt, soap scum, and debris collect in your machine's seals, nooks, and crannies causing mildew, bacteria, and mold to form. This is especially true of front-loading machines, where the door gasket becomes a breeding ground for icky smells. To combat the stink, be sure you are using the proper detergent for your machine, and don’t add more than the recommended amount. Excess soap will leave a residue that can attract more dirt and amplify bacteria growth. It’s also a good idea to leave the machine door open for a few hours after each load to allow [excess moisture](https://www.bhg.com/how-to-lower-humidity-in-house-8714272) to evaporate. - Total Time: 30 minutes - Skill Level: Beginner - Estimated Cost: \$15 Grime can accumulate inside of a washing machine when dirt from clothes, towels, and sheets is left behind. Without [regular cleaning](https://www.bhg.com/homekeeping/house-cleaning/tips/monthly-house-cleaning-checklist/), washing machines can trap leftover detergent, hard-water deposits, and [mold or mildew](https://www.bhg.com/how-to-get-rid-of-mold-and-mildew-8674585) around the lid. This buildup may leave a [residue on laundry](https://www.bhg.com/homekeeping/laundry-linens/tips-checklists/laundry-stripping/) or cause a funky smell. In order to keep your clothes and linens [as clean as possible](https://www.bhg.com/homekeeping/laundry-linens/tips-checklists/how-to-sanitize-laundry/), it's important to clean your washing machine once per month. The following steps will guide you through cleaning both front-loading and top-loading machines, with careful attention to their unique needs. Credit: Jacob Fox ## What You'll Need ### Equipment / Tools - Old toothbrush or one dedicated to cleaning - Microfiber cleaning cloth - Absorbent towel ### Materials - Distilled white vinegar ## Instructions ## How to Clean a Washing Machine If your [washing machine](https://www.bhg.com/how-to-drain-a-washing-machine-7571318) features a self-clean cycle, then you should simply select that option and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. For machines without this convenient feature, you should follow these easy steps to remove buildup from the [hoses and drum](https://www.bhg.com/home-improvement/plumbing/how-to-set-up-laundry-room-plumbing/), which helps keep your laundry smelling fresh. 1. Credit: Jacob Fox ### Run a Hot Cycle with Vinegar Start the cleaning process by running an empty hot water cycle, using two cups of distilled white vinegar instead of detergent. 2. Use a sponge and a dedicated toothbrush to scrub the interior of the washing machine, with extra attention to the detergent and fabric softener dispensers, the inside of the door, and the edges.
