| Boilerpipe Text | The water requirements for outdoor plants may fluctuate with the seasons, but indoor plants have distinct requirements too—often based on type, placement, light exposure, and container. These variables can make it tricky to know exactly when—and how often—to water your plant, not to mention how much water each plant needs. Here, you'll learn how to water plants properly—whether it's a thirsty anthurium or a
low-water jade plant
. You'll also discover the best kind of water to use and learn to recognize the telltale
signs of overwatering
. Follow our guidelines and you'll never have to deal with crispy, dried-out leaves or mushy, brown plants again.

How Much to Water Houseplants
Not all plants have the same thirst, so observe their natural environments for watering clues. Popular houseplants likeÂ
philodendrons
thrive in the tropics with frequent rain, needing more water to maintain their lush appearance. These types contrast with desert natives likeÂ
like cacti and succulents
, which prefer dry periods between waterings.
Seasonal changes also affect indoor plant watering needs. Many grow vigorously in spring and summer but slow down in fall and winter. If your plants show seasonal growth shifts, reduce watering in the cooler months to avoid stressing them.
Editor's Tip:
If you notice less growth than usual, ease up on how much water you give your plants until they start growing more again.

When to Water Your Indoor Plants
Avoid waiting until leaves wilt to water your plants. Thirsty plants not only look poor but become more prone to pests and diseases. Instead, routinely check your houseplants weekly to determine their need for watering. Utilize apps like
Waterbug
or
Happy Plant
to get timely watering reminders.
Morning is the best time to water
your indoor plants, as it allows excess moisture on leaves to dry during the day, minimizing disease risks. When moisture lingers on plant leaves, there's an
increased risk of disease
.
How to Check Your Indoor Plant's Water Level
To check if your plants need watering, insert a finger about an inch into the
potting mix
. If it feels dry, it’s time to water. If it's damp, wait and check again in a day or two. For small houseplants, lift the container; if it feels light, it's time to water. By comparing weights before and after watering, you'll learn how heavy the pot should be when adequately watered. For those who prefer automation, consider an
indoor garden system
, which monitors moisture levels for you.
Best Water for Indoor Plants
The water you use on houseplants matters. Most tap water works well, except if
it's softened
, which can add salts to the soil over time. Chlorinated tap water suits most plants, but filtered water is even better for plant health. Alternatively,
rainwater
is excellent as it’s generally pH balanced and free from typical tap water minerals.
For all water types, use room-temperature water when watering plants. Extremes, whether too hot or cold, can shock plant leaves, leading to damage.
How to Water Indoor Plants
Your room-temperature water is ready to go, and the soil feels dry—what's next? Instead of dribbling a little water to avoid overwatering, aim to saturate the soil completely. This ensures that water reaches the roots, which are typically deeper in the soil. Continue watering until it begins to drain from the pot’s
drainage hole
at the bottom. Catch any runoff in a saucer, but be sure to empty it after about 10 minutes to prevent
root rot
.
For another method, try placing pots in a shallow water basin, letting them absorb from the bottom. Alternatively, fill a saucer beneath the pot; if the plant is thirsty, water will be drawn into the soil through the drainage holes. Refill the saucer until water isn't absorbed anymore, allowing the pots to soak for 15 to 30 minutes or until the top layer of soil is moist. This is called
"bottom watering,"
perfect for plants that don’t like water on their stems, such as succulents, cacti, and
African violets
.

How to Tell If You’re Overwatering Your Indoor Plants
Drainage holes in pots are crucial, preventing root suffocation by allowing excess water to escape. Overwatering fills the soil with water instead of air, drowning the roots. Watch for common overwatering signs, like a lack of new growth or
yellowing leaves
. Wilting can occur too, although it’s tricky as it also signals underwatering. To resolve, check soil moisture using a
plant moisture meter
. Wet soil means hold off on watering; dry soil means you might need to water more frequently.
A telltale sign of too much moisture is an unpleasant odor, indicating fungal or bacterial growth due to overwatering, especially if roots are rotting. If you notice
fungus gnats
flying around the plant, it's likely overwatered.
If overwatering symptoms appear, all is not lost. Allow the soil to dry out, then adopt proper watering practices. If the plant doesn’t improve, remove dead or mushy roots with
sterile pruning snips
and replant in fresh soil.
Make Other Adjustments
If adjusting your watering routine hasn't improved your plant’s health, consider altering its
temperature or light exposure
. More light may help; move plants closer to a sunny window. If they require less light, relocate them away from windows or put them in
north-facing windows
. Grow lights can supplement natural light levels, but select the
appropriate grow light
as different plants have varying light needs at different growth stages.
Mastering plant watering takes practice. Begin with hardy varieties that are
tough to kill
. After gaining confidence, try cultivating plants that are more demanding but
worth the effort
.
Frequently Asked Questions
While misting may be beneficial for plants that like high humidity (like orchids and ferns), it's a slippery slope for most plants. When you mist plants, you temporarily increase the humidity around the plant, but that moisture does not reach the roots—which need water to thrive. Misting is fine as a supplemental practice (especially in very dry, indoor environments) but should not substitute traditional or bottom watering.
While watering plants with ice cubes is a popular hack for busy plant lovers, the practice is not recommended by many plant experts. Proponents claim that as the ice melts, the water seeps slowly into the soil without overwhelming the plant. However, naysayers argue that the lack of control could lead to both overwatering
and
underwatering. They also claim that the cold temperatures could cause root shock and damage the plant.
A self-watering planter is a tool that delivers water to your plants (typically the roots) without any intervention. Typically, self-watering planters rely on sub-irrigation and a below-surface water reservoir to allow the plant to drink at its own pace.
Yes, it's possible to make your own self-watering planter. Doing so typically involves using a main vessel with holes at the base and a water reservoir below that allows moisture to seep into the soil. |

## How Much to Water Houseplants
Not all plants have the same thirst, so observe their natural environments for watering clues. Popular houseplants like [philodendrons](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/plant-dictionary/houseplant/philodendron/) thrive in the tropics with frequent rain, needing more water to maintain their lush appearance. These types contrast with desert natives like [like cacti and succulents](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/houseplants/mini-succulents/), which prefer dry periods between waterings.
Seasonal changes also affect indoor plant watering needs. Many grow vigorously in spring and summer but slow down in fall and winter. If your plants show seasonal growth shifts, reduce watering in the cooler months to avoid stressing them.
**Editor's Tip:** If you notice less growth than usual, ease up on how much water you give your plants until they start growing more again.

## When to Water Your Indoor Plants
Avoid waiting until leaves wilt to water your plants. Thirsty plants not only look poor but become more prone to pests and diseases. [Morning is the best time to water](https://www.bhg.com/watering-indoor-plants-in-winter-11868185) your indoor plants, as it allows excess moisture on leaves to dry during the day, minimizing disease risks. When moisture lingers on plant leaves, there's an [increased risk of disease](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/pests/insects-diseases-weeds/common-plant-diseases/).
## How to Check Your Indoor Plant's Water Level
To check if your plants need watering, insert a finger about an inch into the [potting mix](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/yard/soil/what-is-well-drained-soil/). If it feels dry, it’s time to water. If it's damp, wait and check again in a day or two. For small houseplants, lift the container; if it feels light, it's time to water. By comparing weights before and after watering, you'll learn how heavy the pot should be when adequately watered. For those who prefer automation, consider an [indoor garden system](https://www.bhg.com/best-indoor-garden-systems-8621042), which monitors moisture levels for you.

## Best Water for Indoor Plants
The water you use on houseplants matters. Most tap water works well, except if [it's softened](https://www.bhg.com/best-water-softeners-8751529), which can add salts to the soil over time. Chlorinated tap water suits most plants, but filtered water is even better for plant health. Alternatively, [rainwater](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/design/projects/how-to-make-rain-barrel/) is excellent as it’s generally pH balanced and free from typical tap water minerals.
For all water types, use room-temperature water when watering plants. Extremes, whether too hot or cold, can shock plant leaves, leading to damage.

## How to Water Indoor Plants
Your room-temperature water is ready to go, and the soil feels dry—what's next? Instead of dribbling a little water to avoid overwatering, aim to saturate the soil completely. This ensures that water reaches the roots, which are typically deeper in the soil. Continue watering until it begins to drain from the pot’s [drainage hole](https://www.bhg.com/rocks-for-drainage-in-pots-7487029) at the bottom. Catch any runoff in a saucer, but be sure to empty it after about 10 minutes to prevent [root rot](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/houseplants/care/how-to-fix-common-houseplant-problems/).
This is called ["bottom watering,"](https://www.bhg.com/top-vs-bottom-watering-for-potted-plants-11744547) perfect for plants that don’t like water on their stems, such as succulents, cacti, and [African violets](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/plant-dictionary/houseplant/african-violet/).

## How to Tell If You’re Overwatering Your Indoor Plants
Drainage holes in pots are crucial, preventing root suffocation by allowing excess water to escape. Overwatering fills the soil with water instead of air, drowning the roots. Watch for common overwatering signs, like a lack of new growth or [yellowing leaves](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/houseplants/care/why-are-the-leaves-on-my-houseplant-turning-yellow/). Wilting can occur too, although it’s tricky as it also signals underwatering. To resolve, check soil moisture using a [plant moisture meter](https://www.bhg.com/best-plant-moisture-meters-7976267). Wet soil means hold off on watering; dry soil means you might need to water more frequently.
A telltale sign of too much moisture is an unpleasant odor, indicating fungal or bacterial growth due to overwatering, especially if roots are rotting. If you notice [fungus gnats](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/houseplants/care/gnats-in-houseplants/) flying around the plant, it's likely overwatered.
If overwatering symptoms appear, all is not lost. Allow the soil to dry out, then adopt proper watering practices. If the plant doesn’t improve, remove dead or mushy roots with [sterile pruning snips](https://www.bhg.com/how-to-clean-pruning-shears-8303133) and replant in fresh soil.

## Make Other Adjustments
If adjusting your watering routine hasn't improved your plant’s health, consider altering its [temperature or light exposure](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/houseplants/care/indoor-plant-lights/). More light may help; move plants closer to a sunny window. If they require less light, relocate them away from windows or put them in [north-facing windows](https://www.bhg.com/south-facing-house-8647456). Grow lights can supplement natural light levels, but select the [appropriate grow light](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/houseplants/care/choosing-plant-grow-lights/) as different plants have varying light needs at different growth stages.
Mastering plant watering takes practice. Begin with hardy varieties that are [tough to kill](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/houseplants/projects/houseplants-you-cant-kill/). After gaining confidence, try cultivating plants that are more demanding but [worth the effort](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/yard/garden-care/cottage-garden-care/).

## Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I mist my houseplants with a spray bottle to water them?
While misting may be beneficial for plants that like high humidity (like orchids and ferns), it's a slippery slope for most plants. When you mist plants, you temporarily increase the humidity around the plant, but that moisture does not reach the roots—which need water to thrive. Misting is fine as a supplemental practice (especially in very dry, indoor environments) but should not substitute traditional or bottom watering.
- Can I water my indoor plants with ice cubes?
While watering plants with ice cubes is a popular hack for busy plant lovers, the practice is not recommended by many plant experts. Proponents claim that as the ice melts, the water seeps slowly into the soil without overwhelming the plant. However, naysayers argue that the lack of control could lead to both overwatering *and* underwatering. They also claim that the cold temperatures could cause root shock and damage the plant.
- What is a self-watering planter?
A self-watering planter is a tool that delivers water to your plants (typically the roots) without any intervention. Typically, self-watering planters rely on sub-irrigation and a below-surface water reservoir to allow the plant to drink at its own pace.
- Can I make my own self-watering planter?
Yes, it's possible to make your own self-watering planter. Doing so typically involves using a main vessel with holes at the base and a water reservoir below that allows moisture to seep into the soil.

| Readable Markdown | The water requirements for outdoor plants may fluctuate with the seasons, but indoor plants have distinct requirements too—often based on type, placement, light exposure, and container. These variables can make it tricky to know exactly when—and how often—to water your plant, not to mention how much water each plant needs. Here, you'll learn how to water plants properly—whether it's a thirsty anthurium or a [low-water jade plant](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/houseplants/projects/easiest-houseplants-you-can-grow/). You'll also discover the best kind of water to use and learn to recognize the telltale [signs of overwatering](https://www.bhg.com/gardening/houseplants/care/how-to-fix-common-houseplant-problems/). Follow our guidelines and you'll never have to deal with crispy, dried-out leaves or mushy, brown plants again.
