Mercedes' George Russell stole the spotlight from the title contenders with a stunning pole position at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Russell's first pole since the Canadian Grand Prix in June, which he won, was achieved by 0.182 seconds from Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri took third place, with his title rival and team-mate Lando Norris fifth, behind Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli.
Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc took sixth and seventh.
It was Mercedes' first pole in Singapore since Hamilton set his famous lap in 2018 and came as a surprise as Russell gatecrashed Norris and Piastri's fight.

I think we're in for a treat tomorrow. Or at least I hope so with these three at the front of the grid. Championship leader Oscar Piastri didn't take pole position, but he's starting higher than his main rival, McLaren team-mate Lando Norris, so that's a big bonus.
But should the papaya pair start looking over their shoulder if Max Verstappen, sitting third in the title standings, take another victory on Sunday? He'll have to get past the Mercedes of George Russell first, though.
Build up to the Singapore Grand Prix is from 12:00 BST, so we'll see you then.
Lghts out for the original race at Marina Bay is at 13:00.
'Very, very tough weekend' for Ferrari

The mood in the Ferrari camp is downbeat tonight. After qualifying seventh for tomorrow's Singapore challenge, Charles Leclerc remarked "**** weekend" over the team radio.
Leclerc has reached the media pen and says "everything" was an issue, especially the grip levels. "Really, really struggling to find the grip on this track," he tells Sky Sports. "The car is still very snappy and unpredictable, and I know it's not my strength when there is understeer on the car.
"It's been a very, very tough weekend."
Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, tells Sky Sports he felt good in the car, and Q1 was really strong, but he adds: "Maybe silly of me, but I thought maybe fighting for top positions.
"But then the plan, when we end up waiting in the pit lane, losing tyre temperature, using the tyre on the out lap but then coming in and it affecting the temperature. All these different things just add up to not optimising the session."
Who wins in Singapore?

It's always an interesting day when these two start on the front row together. George Russell has the upper-hand on pole, and neither of he nor Max Verstappen have ever won in Singapore, so who do you think will be victorious on Sunday?

'Nothing is a surprise' - Norris
published at 15:51 BST 4 October 2025

McLaren's Lando Norris qualified in P5, speaking to Sky Sports:
"If there's anywhere you don't want to be poorly, it's here. I'm better today, yesterday and the day before I was struggling a little bit. It hit me pretty quickly but it also went away relatively quickly. No excuses for today."
On the pace:
"Mercedes are doing a very good job, Red Bull have been very good the last few weekends so nothing is a surprise. The only thing is Singapore has always been a little bit of a weird one and whenever we struggle with front tyres, we struggle a lot as a team.
"The whole weekend we've been struggling with the front tyres and in the contrary to that, we know anytime everyone on the grid struggles with tyres like they are this weekend with the new tarmac, Mercedes is always the team who comes out on top.
"I think we understand when you pit two and two together why we have struggled a little bit. Just the front of the car not being strong enough and too much understeer, then you have to make compromises and give up rear grip and you kind of get into a bad area.
"We understand it and making improvements on all these things is the big thing we have to work on. We are trying to win a Constructors' [title] this weekend, it just feels disappointing that we're not quick enough.
"It really doesn't matter when you say you've dominated one, two or three weekends. When you come here and you're three-tenths off, we clearly have work to do."
On the race and if a win is on the cards:
"I think you're asking for a lot. I'm sure I will go back to my room later and as a team we will ask ourselves the same questions, but this track is all about qualifying.
"There's always chances in the race but not many and if you're starting where we are it's about trying to get on to third or second."

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who will start on the front row in second, is asked about his potential mistake at the end of Q3:
"Yeah, that's what happens when there is a car just cruising two seconds in front. So that's noted, will be remembered."
Asked who the driver was, Verstappen joked: "Not Oscar!"
He added: "So that was a bit of a shame, I think it could've been close for pole. It's always very exciting here for qualifying.
"Of course, a little bit disappointed to not be first, but for us, this weekend, so far, has been really good. The car has been very competitive, for us to be second again is very good."

George
Russell puts his Mercedes on pole in Singapore, he said:
"It’s amazing to be on
pole position. Yesterday was a very challenging day for many different reasons,
but it’s good to come back and get a good result today.
"It’s a long sweaty
race tomorrow but I knew there was potential in the car. Kimi [Antonelli] was doing
an amazing job all weekend and I actually changed quite a lot from seeing what
he was capable of doing yesterday afternoon. I’m very happy to be on pole."
On the race:
"Singapore has not been the kindest to me in the past and that has been through
my own doing the majority of the time.
"I’m not
going to get carried away with this pole position, it’s the best place to start
and there is a good pole side advantage here so I would like to think I can
hold the lead into Turn One.
"This guy
[Max Verstappen] on my left is obviously pretty good at race starts and sending
it down the inside, so I will be keeping an eye."

**Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who will start on the front row in second, is asked about his potential mistake at the end of Q3:** "Yeah, that's what happens when there is a car just cruising two seconds in front.

12. ### 'I’m very happy to be on pole' - Russell published at 15:24 BST 4 October 2025 15:24 BST 4 October 2025

**George Russell puts his Mercedes on pole in Singapore, he said:** "It’s amazing to be on pole position. Yesterday was a very challenging day for many different reasons, but it’s good to come back and get a good result today.
"It’s a long sweaty race tomorrow but I knew there was potential in the car. Kimi \[Antonelli\] was doing an amazing job all weekend and I actually changed quite a lot from seeing what he was capable of doing yesterday afternoon. I’m very happy to be on pole."
**On the race:** "Singapore has not been the kindest to me in the past and that has been through my own doing the majority of the time.
"I’m not going to get carried away with this pole position, it’s the best place to start and there is a good pole side advantage here so I would like to think I can hold the lead into Turn One.
"This guy \[Max Verstappen\] on my left is obviously pretty good at race starts and sending it down the inside, so I will be keeping an eye."

They are so delighted at Mercedes and you can see George Russell jumping out the car. He might have kept it cool on the radio but he's delighted inside.

The top three drivers are being interviewed together this weekend, so George Russell, Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri stand next to each other, sweat dripping. This, we're told, will be a quick in and out job because of the heat.

Charles Leclerc is looking hot and bothered as he stands and watches the pole celebrations. The Ferrari driver will start seventh and share a row with Isack Hadjar, who qualified in eighth in the Racing Bulls. Lewis Hamilton is one place higher in sixth, with Lando Norris's McLaren for comapny in fifth.
Kimi Antonelli takes his place in fourth for tomorrow's 62-lap race, the same spot as Baku two weeks ago.

Brilliant job, that was something to behold. That was two of George Russell's best laps in Formula One, to be on pole position at this track it takes something and he has delivered.

**Mercedes' George Russell stole the spotlight from the title contenders with a stunning pole position at the Singapore Grand Prix.**

2. ### Singapore GP build-up from 12:00 BST on Sundaypublished at 16:03 BST 4 October 2025
3. ### 'Very, very tough weekend' for Ferraripublished at 15:58 BST 4 October 2025
The mood in the Ferrari camp is downbeat tonight. After qualifying seventh for tomorrow's Singapore challenge, Charles Leclerc remarked "\*\*\*\* weekend" over the team radio.
4. ### Who wins in Singapore?published at 15:55 BST 4 October 2025
It's always an interesting day when these two start on the front row together. George Russell has the upper-hand on pole, and neither of he nor Max Verstappen have ever won in Singapore, so who do you think will be victorious on Sunday?

5. ### 'Nothing is a surprise' - Norrispublished at 15:51 BST 4 October 2025
**McLaren's Lando Norris qualified in P5, speaking to Sky Sports:** "If there's anywhere you don't want to be poorly, it's here. I'm better today, yesterday and the day before I was struggling a little bit. It hit me pretty quickly but it also went away relatively quickly. No excuses for today."
**On the pace:** "Mercedes are doing a very good job, Red Bull have been very good the last few weekends so nothing is a surprise.
We are trying to win a Constructors' \[title\] this weekend, it just feels disappointing that we're not quick enough.
"It really doesn't matter when you say you've dominated one, two or three weekends. When you come here and you're three-tenths off, we clearly have work to do."
**On the race and if a win is on the cards:** "I think you're asking for a lot. I'm sure I will go back to my room later and as a team we will ask ourselves the same questions, but this track is all about qualifying.
"There's always chances in the race but not many and if you're starting where we are it's about trying to get on to third or second."

**McLaren’s Oscar Piastri will start in third, he said:** "I obviously would have wanted more but I don’t think we had four-tenths in it to go and get pole.
"Ultimately I’m pretty happy, I feel like it has been a good weekend so far and built up through it nicely. It was a pretty clean session so that’s all I can ask for."

11. ### 'Could have been close for pole' - Verstappenpublished at 15:29 BST 4 October 2025
**Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who will start on the front row in second, is asked about his potential mistake at the end of Q3:** "Yeah, that's what happens when there is a car just cruising two seconds in front.
12. ### 'I’m very happy to be on pole' - Russellpublished at 15:24 BST 4 October 2025
13. ### Postpublished at 15:20 BST 4 October 2025
