Although his old pal Gillian Anderson has spent the last year or so signaling interest in Ryan Coogler’s efforts to reboot or revive  The X-Files (when not desperately asking interviewers to give it a rest so that it doesn’t drown out projects she’s actually working on) David Duchovny has been a bit more taciturn. It’s still early days for Coogler’s efforts to bring back the long-running series, which has had a pilot ordered starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel . Hell, Duchovny doesn’t even know if Fox Mulder exists in this universe! This is per an interview Duchovny gave to  THR this week , in which all involved made their best possible efforts to talk about his History Channel series  Secrets Declassified  for an acceptable amount of time before diving into  X-Files  stuff. (Among other things, Duchovny put forward his own personal criteria for not believing in UFOs, despite their recent vogue, noting, “I’ve never really seen two people keep a secret, let alone thousands of people in a government throughout generations.”) But, gravity being what it is, the conversation inevitably drifted ever-more Mulder-ward, until  THR just came out and asked what Duchovny knows about the reboot/revival. All of which was pretty hedge-y, as Duchovny acknowledged that he’s talked to Coogler, but never seen a script for the project: “I haven’t. I’ve spoken to Ryan, and I have a general sense of what it is, but I haven’t read the script
There have been talks about certain things, but there’s nothing concrete at this point.” When asked about hypotheticals—i.e., whether he’d come back if asked to—Duchovny didn’t even go so far as Anderson’s cheeky “Call me” from last year: “I don’t know what the world of his show is. I don’t know if my character exists in that show. It’s all hypothetical to me, so I can’t really address it.” All that being said, Duchovny did sound at least intrigued by the project, saying, “I wish them luck. It’s a great frame that Chris Carter came up with all those years ago—a believer and a nonbeliever tackling these mysteries. I always thought it was endlessly generative. It really comes down to the writers’ room for me. Because we had great writers. We had Vince Gilligan, the Morgan brothers, Howard Gordon, Darin Morgan and others. We were blessed to have a writers’ room that could generate 20 to 25 movie ideas. I’m not going to insult something like The Pitt , because that’s great television. But  The X-Files was a movie idea every week. So I hope Ryan doesn’t have to do 25 and only has to do 10 or 12. And I hope he’s got great writers, because that’s really the key to making that show work.”

In an unfortunate coincidence of timing, one episode that parodied right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk was scheduled to air a rerun on Wednesday September 10, the same day Kirk was [shot and killed](https://www.avclub.com/msnbc-analyst-fired-charlie-kirk-shooting-comments) at Utah Valley University. In wake of the shooting, the rerun was pulled from the schedule and another *South Park* episode aired on Comedy Central instead. “Got A Nut” originally aired in August, and featured Cartman styling himself after Kirk and arguing politics with young people. “I have my arguments down rock solid,” Cartman tells his mother in the episode ([via](https://www.thedailybeast.com/south-park-pulls-charlie-kirk-episode-after-assassination/) [*The Daily Beast*](https://www.thedailybeast.com/south-park-pulls-charlie-kirk-episode-after-assassination/)). “These young college girls are totally unprepared, so I can just destroy them, and also edit out all the ones that actually argue back well. It just feels so good.” At the end of the episode, Cartman receives the “Charlie Kirk Award for Young Masterdebaters.” Kirk, who became a right-wing celebrity for promoting racist, sexist, and extreme conservative rhetoric, celebrated the *South Park* parody at the time. He called it “hilarious,” saying on TikTok ([via](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/south-park-charlie-kirk-maga-1236368149/) [*The Hollywood Reporter*](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/south-park-charlie-kirk-maga-1236368149/)), “We have a good spirit about being made fun of. This is all a win. We as conservatives have thick skin, not thin skin, and you can make fun of us and it doesn’t matter.” Unlike [the White House](https://www.avclub.com/south-park-white-house-response-trump) and secretary of homeland security [Kristi Noem](https://www.avclub.com/kristi-noem-south-park-response-appearance), Kirk was able to spin *South Park*‘s attention into a positive. He called it a “badge of honor” and told Fox News ([via](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/charlie-kirk-south-park-parody-b2798801.html) [*The Independent*](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/charlie-kirk-south-park-parody-b2798801.html)) that it “goes to show the cultural impact and the resonance that our movement has been able to achieve.” Not all within his movement would agree, and after his death some have blamed *South Park* for the shocking political violence. [According to](https://nypost.com/2025/09/11/media/comedy-central-pulls-south-park-episode-mocking-charlie-kirk-after-assassination/?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=nypost&utm_source=twitter) [*The New York Post*](https://nypost.com/2025/09/11/media/comedy-central-pulls-south-park-episode-mocking-charlie-kirk-after-assassination/?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=nypost&utm_source=twitter), a staffer from Kirk’s Turning Point USA posted on Telegram, “Comedy has consequences. Charlie was targeted in the culture before he was targeted in real life.” Similarly, right-wing radio host Jesse Kelly said on his program, “*South Park* thought it was funny to turn Charlie into a cartoon joke. Now his wife is planning a funeral.” Show all 413 comments... ![](https://img.pastemagazine.com/wp-content/shared-images/chevron-down-bold-cropped-a.svg) ![](https://img.pastemagazine.com/wp-content/shared-images/chevron-down-bold-cropped-a.svg) Keep scrolling for more great stories.![](https://img.pastemagazine.com/wp-content/shared-images/chevron-down-bold-cropped-a.svg) ![](https://img.pastemagazine.com/wp-content/shared-images/chevron-down-bold-cropped-a.svg) # David Duchovny doesn't know if Fox Mulder even exists in Ryan Coogler's *X-Files* ## Duchovny made it clear that he hasn't seen a script for Coogler's *X-Files* reboot, currently in the pilot stage. FX must know, then, that it has a pretty sure thing on its hands with [*Welcome To Wrexham*](https://www.avclub.com/welcome-to-wrexham-fx-docuseries-football-rob-mcelhenne-1849431809), the docuseries from Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac (nĂ© Robert McElhenney III). As the series heads into its fifth season next week, FX has renewed it for three more seasons, likely keeping the show on the air until 2029. “A three-season order for a TV series is nearly unheard of and is only possible through the ground-breaking work of our Emmy-winning documentary team and the relentless rise of Wrexham AFC and all those working so hard to make sports history,” say Mac and Reynolds, Co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC, in a shockingly straightforward press statement. “We are forever grateful to our equally fearless and tireless partners at FX for being with us every step of the way. We are so happy we get to keep telling the Wrexham story for years to come.” *Welcome To Wrexham* follows the Wrexham AFC, the football team co-owned by Mac and Reynolds, who purchased it in 2020. The team has, obviously, gained a ton of new fans since the series premiered and has gained quite a bit of success on the pitch, with the team making its first appearance in four decades in the English Football League’s Championship. It also seems to be making a decent amount of money from the show too, given that FX wants much more of it and that there [are already imitators](https://www.avclub.com/elon-musk-burnley-fc-welcome-to-wrexham-x). This was apparently [the “balanced” version](https://www.avclub.com/the-pitt-ice-storyline-balanced) of the plotline, which producer John Wells said HBO Max had asked for, but maintained that the network didn’t ask for specific cuts. It still sounds like there were some edits made to the storyline, according to a new interview with Noah Wyle, who is an executive producer on the series and eventually found out about this discussion. “The negotiation was being driven by political reasons, creative reasons, fear, uncertainty, all sorts of legitimate reasons,” the Dr. Robby actor [tells *Variety*](https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/noah-wyle-the-pitt-ice-season-3-paramount-wb-sale-1236709707/). “I’ll be honest and say that I was concerned about the edits we were making initially.” However, Wyle is pleased with where they ended up. “When I saw what we had done, I actually think we arrived at something more elegant and a little bit more restrained, which leaves a little bit more ambiguity in it than we may have started out with. I think it’s healthier for the storyline in the long run,” Wyle continues. “It ended up being show the bear, don’t poke the bear in a lot of ways, which is enough. Because the context came out after we’d filmed that episode, we didn’t have to do half of what we had done. That had already been imprinted into the mind of most Americans.” *Variety* doesn’t specify what this context would be, but it seems like a fair guess that Wyle is referring to ICE’s invasion of Minneapolis in January that left at least two U.S. citizens dead, which would have been after the storyline was likely filmed. Although his old pal Gillian Anderson has spent the last year or so [signaling interest](https://www.avclub.com/gillian-anderson-could-return-x-files-ryan-coogler) in Ryan Coogler’s efforts to reboot or revive *The X-Files* (when not desperately asking interviewers to give it a rest so that it doesn’t drown out projects she’s actually working on) [David Duchovny](https://www.avclub.com/david-duchovny-on-writing-revisiting-mulder-and-his-n-1846988977) has been a bit more taciturn. It’s still early days for Coogler’s efforts to bring back the long-running series, which has had a pilot ordered starring [Danielle Deadwyler](https://www.avclub.com/danielle-deadwyler-cast-ryan-coogler-x-files-reboot) and [Himesh Patel](https://www.avclub.com/himesh-patel-ryan-coogler-x-files-reboot). Hell, Duchovny doesn’t even know if Fox Mulder exists in this universe\! This is per [an interview Duchovny gave to *THR* this week](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/david-duchovny-the-x-files-reboot-secrets-declassified-1236561434/), in which all involved made their best possible efforts to talk about his History Channel series *Secrets Declassified* for an acceptable amount of time before diving into *X-Files* stuff. (Among other things, Duchovny put forward his own personal criteria for not believing in UFOs, despite their recent vogue, noting, “I’ve never really seen two people keep a secret, let alone thousands of people in a government throughout generations.”) But, gravity being what it is, the conversation inevitably drifted ever-more Mulder-ward, until *THR* just came out and asked what Duchovny knows about the reboot/revival.
I’m not going to insult something like *The Pitt*, because that’s great television. But *The X-Files* was a movie idea every week. So I hope Ryan doesn’t have to do 25 and only has to do 10 or 12. And I hope he’s got great writers, because that’s really the key to making that show work.”
