| Boilerpipe Text | Monaco’s Formula 1 race will remain part of the schedule for at least the next 10 years after a new contract was agreed.
Monaco is among the oldest grands prix on the schedule, having first been run in the pre-World Championship era in 1929, and it was part of the inaugural Formula 1 World Championship season in 1950.
It has been absent on only five occasions, most recently due to the pandemic in 2020, and only Monza has been raced at more times in Formula 1 than the 71 races held in Monaco.
Monaco’s event regularly splits opinions owing to the staggering spectacle of Formula 1 machinery hurtling around the narrow and prestigious streets, which contrasts with the often tedious procession that occurs during the race itself.
An attempt was made to spice up the drama this year, with a mandatory two-stop strategy implemented, but it only resulted in teams playing tactics and extended trains as drivers adopted go-slow approaches.
Monaco’s event was last year extended through 2031 but on Friday a fresh four-year agreement on top was confirmed, securing the future of the grand prix through at least 2035.

“The renewal of the Monaco Grand Prix until 2035 is in keeping with a sporting and historical tradition to which the Principality remains deeply attached,” Prince Albert II of Monaco said.
“I can only welcome this renewed commitment, which is testament to our collective success, the excellence of our collaboration with Formula 1, and the unique place that Monaco occupies in the international motorsport landscape.”
Monaco’s deal is the latest long-term arrangement sorted by Formula 1 in recent years.
The majority of the current events are contracted through into the 2030s while Miami has a deal that runs through 2041 inclusive.
Next year’s schedule will feature the addition of a new event around the streets of Madrid, which is replacing Imola, while the Dutch GP at Zandvoort will hold its final race in 2026.
The US Grand Prix at Austin has one of the shortest contracts on the calendar, running through only 2026, but a long-term extension is expected to be reached shortly.
U.K.-based Phillip Horton started covering Grands Prix while still at university and swiftly deemed that writing about Formula 1 and the behind-the-scenes machinations was much more engaging than reading centuries-old novels. Degree gained, he went on to cover the sport full-time from 2014 and is as intrigued and excited by the destinations Formula 1 visits during its lengthy annual world tour as the racing itself. Phillip joined Autoweek in 2021 and while he has just about learned to spell in American English he has yet to find anywhere in America that makes a proper cup of tea. | |||||||||
