Meta Title2026 Honda Prelude Coming This Fall with 200 HP and Type R Parts
Meta DescriptionThe transmission is likely Honda's eCVT.

A new Honda Prelude will arrive in dealerships in late fall, with a 200-hp hybrid powertrain and suspension components from the Civic Type R. The transmission is a version of Honda’s eCVT, but it will benefit from Honda S+ Shift—a new drive mode that “simulates a performance transmission.” Look for pricing, MPG, and curb weight to be released closer to launch. Honda’s new Prelude arrives late this fall, with a 200-hp hybrid drivetrain, and suspension parts from the Civic Type R. So that’s the good news. But the transmission is likely Honda’s eCVT, a direct-drive hybrid transmission that uses a planetary gearset to blend power from the engine and electric motor. There’s no manual transmission option listed in the specs. The eCVT system allows the engine to operate at its most efficient RPMs by acting like a generator, while the electric motor provides instant torque for smooth, responsive acceleration. So it’s not a CVT per se. It’s similar to units found in the Civic, Accord, and other Honda models. Also not released was a curb weight. Honda chose to prioritize fuel efficiency with the new Prelude, which is fine, but there were also no mileage figures released yet. A hybrid drivetrain is heavier than a pure internal combustion drivetrain, and a eCVT is chosen for MPG over performance, though Honda points out that this transmission will get the new Honda S+ Shift, “a new drive mode that simulates a performance transmission experience for enhanced driver engagement.” How will Honda S+ Shift do that? “By precisely managing engine RPM and integrating paddle shifters, Honda S+ Shift delivers quick simulated gearshift responses through seamless coordination between the engine and high-power motor, including downshift blips, rev matching and gear holding.” Mated to a four-cylinder hybrid, the combined system output is 200 hp, which isn’t bad at all. It’s Prelude’s first hybrid. The internal combustion component makes 141 hp at 6,000 rpm and 134 lb-ft at 4500 revs. The electric drivetrain component is an AC synchronous permanent-magnet motor making 181 hp between 5,000 and 6,000 rpm and 232 lb-ft of torque from 0 to 2,000 rpm. Because of the electric motor, the ICE engine uses the more efficient Atkinson Cycle, since the electric motor handles the low-end torque off the line. The Prelude rides on Civic Type R chassis components, including the dual-axis strut front suspension, wide front and rear tracks and large brakes originally designed for the Type R. With an adaptive damper system, Honda says the Prelude is tuned for a “sporty yet comfortable grand touring experience.” A GT! “The new sports coupe will advance the ‘joy of driving’ for a new generation of buyers, as the first model to pair the award-winning Honda two-motor hybrid-electric powertrain with the high-performance chassis hardware of the iconic Civic Type R,” Honda said. Honda promises that the 2026 Prelude will offer “precise steering, responsive handling and fun-to-drive feel to deliver an engaging grand touring experience, while remaining comfortable for everyday driving.” Inside is a low cowl, thin A-pillars, and ultra-premium front seats. There’s a thick-rimmed, flat-bottom steering wheel, too. Seating is still 2+2, though Honda says rear seats get 32 inches of legroom. A 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster compliments a nine-inch HD color touchscreen that hosts Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All Preludes come with Bose Centerpoint premium sound with eight speakers. Hybrids are one third of Honda’s sales, lead by the CR-V Hybrid, so it’s only natural that the new Prelude would be a hybrid. We’ll wait to see how much performance will come from this setup. With 200 hp on a smallish platform, it could be good. Mark Vaughn grew up in a Ford family and spent many hours holding a trouble light over a straight-six miraculously fed by a single-barrel carburetor while his father cursed the Blue Oval, all its products and everyone who ever worked there. This was his introduction to objective automotive criticism. He started writing for City News Service in Los Angeles, then moved to Europe and became editor of a car magazine called, creatively, Auto. He decided Auto should cover Formula 1, sports prototypes and touring cars—no one stopped him! From there he interviewed with Autoweek at the 1989 Frankfurt motor show and has been with us ever since.
