Hungry Ghost Festival
(aka Yulan Festival, Zhongyuan Festival), has deep roots in Chinese tradition, blending elements from various religious and cultural practices. It is believed that this is the time that the deceased return to visit and wander amongst the living. The festival is traditionally observed on the 15th day of the 7th
lunar
month. It is recognized by several Asian cultures in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan Singapore, and Malaysia. This year the Festival takes place from August 4 to September 3, which is considered the “Ghost Month.” The peak of
Hungry Ghost Festival
takes place on August 18 in 2024
. So, what is it all about?
I’ve always been fascinated with my own culture. Born and raised here in North America, I’ve learned that my Chinese culture has LOTS of beliefs and traditions. And plenty of superstitions, too! This one was interesting especially for those who believe in the afterlife and ghosts. If your spirited vibes seem active this month, this might be why!
Ancient Beliefs:
The Ghost Festival is closely linked to the ancient Chinese practice of ancestor worship. The Chinese have long believed that the spirits of the deceased continue to influence the world of the living. During the 7th lunar month, it is believed that the gates of the underworld open, allowing ghosts and spirits to roam the earth. Families offer food, incense, and other offerings for these wandering spirits, both known and unknown, and particularly those without descendants to care for them.
The festival is also influenced by Buddhist traditions, particularly the story of “Mu Lian Rescues His Mother”. According to the tale, Mu Lian, a disciple of Buddha, discovered that his mother had been reborn in the realm of hungry ghosts due to her bad karma. Mulian sought help from the Buddha, who instructed him to make offerings to the Buddhist monks on the 15th day of the 7th month. Through these offerings, Mulian was able to liberate his mother from her suffering. This story helped popularize the practice of making offerings to relieve the suffering of hungry ghosts.
The festival is also connected to Taoist beliefs, particularly the idea of appeasing the spirits of the dead to maintain harmony between the living and the dead. In Taoist tradition, the 7th lunar month is known as the “Ghost Month,” and the 15th day is the “Zhongyuan Festival,” where Taoist priests perform rituals to absolve the suffering of the deceased and ensure their peaceful transition to the afterlife.
Hungry Ghost Festival Traditions:
The Hungry Ghost Festival, involves various traditions and customs that are meant to honour and appease the spirits of the deceased, particularly those who are believed to be wandering the earth during this month.  These traditions reflect the deep respect for ancestors and the belief in the influence of spirits on the living, which are central to the Chinese Ghost Festival. Note, there are some variations between regions. Here are some rituals and traditions…
Food Offerings:
One of the most important traditions is preparing and offering food to ancestors and wandering spirits. Families set up altars at home or in public spaces, where they place dishes of food, fruits, and other items as offerings. The offerings are intended to nourish and appease the spirits, ensuring they do not bring misfortune to the living.
Incense and Joss Paper:
Burning incense sticks and joss paper (aka spirit money) is a common practice. Joss paper represents money. It is believed that burning these items will help send them to the spirits.
Joss Paper Money – yes, you can even order them from Amazon
Burning Paper Offerings:
In addition to joss paper, people often burn paper replicas of luxury items such as houses, cars, clothing, and even electronics. These paper items are meant to provide comfort and material goods to the spirits in the afterlife. If you visit chinatown or a Chinese mall, you may find a shop that is filled with burning paper replicas.
Water Lanterns:
In some regions, people release floating lanterns on rivers or other bodies of water. These lanterns (particularly lotus shaped) are meant to guide lost souls and spirits to their proper resting place, helping them find peace and not disturb the living.
Performances:
Traditional Chinese opera performances, puppet shows, and other forms of entertainment are often held during the Ghost Festival. It is believed that these performances are enjoyed by the spirits, and the front rows of the audience are often left empty for the ghosts to “sit” and watch.
Feeding the Hungry Ghosts:
Special rituals are performed to feed the “hungry ghosts”—spirits who are believed to suffer from insatiable hunger because of bad karma. Offerings of food are left outside homes or at temples specifically for these spirits, who might otherwise cause trouble if not appeased. In some communities, large feasts are organized, and tables are set with food for both the living and the spirits. These feasts are communal events where everyone shares in the responsibility of honouring the dead.
Spirit Tablets and Altars:
In many households, spirit tablets or ancestral tablets are placed on altars. These tablets represent the deceased family members, and during the Ghost Festival, they are honored with offerings of food, wine, and incense.
Temple Ceremonies:
Taoist and Buddhist temples often hold ceremonies and prayers during the Ghost Festival. Monks and priests perform rituals to help spirits find peace and to bless the living. These rituals can include chanting, offering food, and burning incense.

Avoiding Certain Activities during the Festival:
Many people observe superstitions during the Ghost Month to avoid angering the spirits. Some traditions  also to help redirect them back to their place of resting after they’ve visited.
For example, people might want to avoid swimming (particularly in the dark) or being out once the sun sets. Some believe that ghosts of those who drowned might pull others into the water. It’s also believed that wandering and lost spirits might follow you home.  So, if you must go out just do so during before nightfall.
Starting something new particularly on the peak day of August 18th  is NOT considered a good idea. Avoid moving into a new home, starting a new business, or getting married during this time.
There are plenty of superstitions and they seem to vary depending on regions and even between families. Whether you believe, or not, is up to you. I personally just won’t risk upsetting any ghosts. I found

that had some traditions that I didn’t even know about! You can search them out!

| Readable Markdown | The Chinese Ghost Festival, also known as the **Hungry Ghost Festival** (aka Yulan Festival, Zhongyuan Festival), has deep roots in Chinese tradition, blending elements from various religious and cultural practices. It is believed that this is the time that the deceased return to visit and wander amongst the living. The festival is traditionally observed on the 15th day of the 7th [lunar](https://www.auburnlane.com/a-city-girls-guide-make-the-most-of-toronto-july/) month. It is recognized by several Asian cultures in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan Singapore, and Malaysia. This year the Festival takes place from August 4 to September 3, which is considered the “Ghost Month.” The peak of **Hungry Ghost Festival** **takes place on August 18 in 2024**.
If your spirited vibes seem active this month, this might be why\!
### Ancient Beliefs:
### Hungry Ghost Festival Traditions:
The Hungry Ghost Festival, involves various traditions and customs that are meant to honour and appease the spirits of the deceased, particularly those who are believed to be wandering the earth during this month. These traditions reflect the deep respect for ancestors and the belief in the influence of spirits on the living, which are central to the Chinese Ghost Festival. Note, there are some variations between regions. Here are some rituals and traditions…
**Food Offerings:**
**Incense and Joss Paper:**
Burning incense sticks and joss paper (aka spirit money) is a common practice. Joss paper represents money. It is believed that burning these items will help send them to the spirits.

Joss Paper Money – yes, you can even order them from Amazon
**Burning Paper Offerings:**
**Water Lanterns:**
In some regions, people release floating lanterns on rivers or other bodies of water. These lanterns (particularly lotus shaped) are meant to guide lost souls and spirits to their proper resting place, helping them find peace and not disturb the living.
**Performances:**
Traditional Chinese opera performances, puppet shows, and other forms of entertainment are often held during the Ghost Festival. It is believed that these performances are enjoyed by the spirits, and the front rows of the audience are often left empty for the ghosts to “sit” and watch.
**Feeding the Hungry Ghosts:**
**Spirit Tablets and Altars:**
In many households, spirit tablets or ancestral tablets are placed on altars. These tablets represent the deceased family members, and during the Ghost Festival, they are honored with offerings of food, wine, and incense.
**Temple Ceremonies:**
Taoist and Buddhist temples often hold ceremonies and prayers during the Ghost Festival. Monks and priests perform rituals to help spirits find peace and to bless the living. These rituals can include chanting, offering food, and burning incense.

### **Avoiding Certain Activities during the Festival:**
I found **[this article](https://www.timeout.com/hong-kong/things-to-do/8-things-you-should-never-do-during-hungry-ghost-festival)** that had some traditions that I didn’t even know about!
