| Boilerpipe Text | 2. A regular washing machine cleaning routine
Use this method for regular washer cleaning.
Step 1: Wipe down the washing machine
For a regular cleaning of a front loader, you can clean it with a white microfiber cloth and bleach mixed with
dish soap
, especially around the rubber seal.
Step 2: Run a cycle with hot water
âSet the washing machine to the highest water and temperature setting and run a full cycle with one cup of white vinegar and around five drops of
lavender essential oil
,â Gazzo suggests.
3. Deep cleaning a front-loading washing machine
This method should be used quarterly for a deep clean.
Step 1: Wipe down the washing machine
As with regular maintenance, start by wiping down the machine with a microfiber cloth dipped in bleach and dish soap.
Step 2: Run a cycle with borax and washing soda
Sprinkle two cups of
washing soda
and two cups of
borax
and run a cycle. âDuring that hour the washing soda and borax will soften up the minerals and residues enough to deep clean the drain and the washer drum,â Gazzo says.
Step 3: Run a full cycle with distilled vinegar
After the washing soda and borax, run another full cycle on hot with distilled vinegar. Measure out two cups of distilled white vinegar and pour them directly into your washing machineâs liquid detergent dispenser. Set your front-loading machine on its longest cycle with the hottest water.
How to clean a top-loading washing machine
If you have a top-loading washing machine, youâll want to follow the below steps.
Step 1: Add white vinegar
Pour four cups of white vinegar into the drum. Set your washing machine to the highest and hottest water setting, and start a cycle.
Step 2: Let the water and vinegar sit
Once the washing machine is filled up and barely started, pause it and allow the water and white vinegar to soak the drum for an hour.
Step 3: Finish the cycle
After sitting for an hour, restart the cycle and let it run until itâs finished.
Step 4: Run one more cycle with baking soda
Once the first rinse cycle has ended, pour in a cup of baking soda and turn your top loader back on for one more powerful cycle with the hottest settings. And when thatâs done, leave the top open to let it air dry.
How to Clean the Exterior of a Washing Machine
To make sure that the front and sides of your washing machine are clean, youâll want to regularly swipe a disinfecting wipe across them to pick up things like hair, lint, and debrisâas well as any bacteria that may develop into an odor over time. Once youâre finished with the wipe, dry off the damp surface with a microfiber cloth for good measure, particularly if your washer is in an enclosed space without air ventilation.
How do I clean a smelly washing machine?
The quickest way to get rid of a washing machine smell is to tackle the surfaces and any areas where water may pool, creating a hospitable environment for mold, mildew, and bacteria. Follow the below steps.
Step 1: Wipe down the machine with white vinegar
Spritz white vinegar onto a damp cloth and run it along the top and bottom of the lid of the top-loading washing machine, the sides, and the front of the washer until youâve touched every square inch of your appliance. If you have a front-loading machine, make sure to thoroughly clean out the residue from the rubber seal around the door. |

Knowing how to clean a washing machine is one of those cleaning hacks you may not consider until a sour smell is coming from the laundry room. A washing machine can be a breeding ground of germs, even when its job is to do the opposite. Think about it: Your washing machine works hard to keep your household in order. Everyday itemsâfrom sweaty workout clothes to [bed sheets](https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/best-bed-sheets-2022) to seemingly [endless towels](https://www.architecturaldigest.com/gallery/best-bath-towels)âcan lead to a less than clean washing machine if you donât maintain it.
âPeople still donât know that washing machines need to be cleaned regularly,â says Alessandro Gazzo, content manager at [Emilyâs Maids](https://emilysmaids.com/), a house cleaning and maid service in Dallas. âThey associate âmachine for cleaningâ with âauto-cleaning,â and that is not the case.â Itâs important to clean a washing machine regularly because they can become a breeding ground for bacterial growth. âAnything from soap scum, detergent, fabric softener, and fiber residues, plus hard water can clog the drain,â he adds. Whatâs more, if you donât know how to clean a washing machine, mildew can build up over time, which is not only gross, but can also cause the wash tub to smell. Gazzo recommends cleaning your washing machine regularly and deep cleaning it every three to four months.

## The best things to use to clean a washing machine
When youâre ready to get your washing machine as clean as the day it was installed, the items you should have on hand are blissfully straightforward. Mary Gagliardi, who goes by the moniker âDr. Laundryâ for Clorox, recommends two things:

Generally, what you use to clean a washing machine will come down to what dirty problem youâre specifically trying to address.
## Is bleach or vinegar better to clean a washing machine?
Chlorine bleach and white vinegar are common cleaning ingredients proven to [deal with mold](https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/how-to-get-rid-of-mold-and-mildew), mildew, and everyday gunk. White vinegar is highly acidic, so itâs an excellent way to kill unwanted slimy accumulation that tends to grow in a wet environment. Bleach, on the other hand, is an oxidative agent (thatâs why it gets your towels bright and white). When it comes to cleaning a washing machine, your cleaning solution depends on the issue at hand. âIf you have mold or mildew, both vinegar and bleach are effective, but bleach is more effective,â Gazzo says. âFor removing odors, I would say vinegar.â
| | Pros | Cons | Uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bleach | Powerful disinfectant, versatile and inexpensive | Harsh and potentially harmful to humans if not handled correctly, can damage certain materials and fabrics | Sanitation, remove mold and mildew, clean non-porous materials like metal and glass |
| White vinegar | Natural and eco-friendly, effectively neutralizes odors, versatile and inexpensive | Not as strong as bleach | Remove odors, dissolve mineral deposits, descale surfaces, stain removal, clean porous materials |
Some people, however, prefer white vinegar because itâs not as harsh as bleach. Unless, of course, your washing machine has been completely neglected, and is now a breeding ground for bacteria and germs, and you want a power cleaner. In that case, you can set the washing machine to a normal wash cycle with hot water and add a quarter of a cup of bleach. If you do go with bleach, check your washing machine manual to make sure it is compatible.

The decision to use bleach or vinegar depends on your cleaning goal.

Step 1: Disconnect the drain
To clean the drain, first make sure the washing machine is off. Then carefully disconnect the drain from the pipe, or perhaps your washing machineâs drain is attached to the laundry room sink.
Step 2: Clean drain
Once the drain is disconnected, place it into an empty tub or wash basin and allow excess water to drain out. Check to see if there is any gunk stuck inside. You might have to use a drain snake to dislodge it. Then soak the drain in vinegar to remove mildew surrounding the drain opening. For stubborn grime, use an old toothbrush with a bit of baking soda. Wipe away the residue with a damp cloth.
Step 3: Find the filter
Next, check if your washing machine has a filter, particularly if you have an older model. If you donât see it right way, check the ownerâs manual as washing machine filters can be in several locations, like the end of a drain hose, along the drum rim, under the agitator cover, or even on the outside of a washing machine inside a small hatch. The filter can look like a mesh or something with small holes to catch lint.
Step 4: Clean the filter
Use a cloth to wipe away any debris it may have collected.
Finally, follow the below steps depending on if you have a front-loading or top-loading washing machine.
## How to clean a front-load washer
There are a few ways to clean a front-load washer. Below, find 3 effective methods.
## 1\. A 30-minute front-load washer refresh
All youâll need is white vinegar and spray bottle for a super quick washing machine refresh that will take you less than 30 minutes.
Step 1: Spray vinegar inside washer
Add white vinegar to a spray bottle and spritz the inside of the drum.
Step 2: Wipe down the drum and gasket with a microfiber cloth
Wipe all around the washer drum with a microfiber cloth, leaving no surface untouched. Next, wipe down the rubber gasketsâalso known as the seals around the door. As you wipe around them, youâll probably find gunk, mildew, lint, and even hair. âThis is especially important for front-loading washers, which can trap hair and other debris in the folds of the gasket,â Gagliardi says, suggesting people use a disinfecting wipe for this.
Step 3: Deep clean the gasket (optional)
If your gasket is in need of a deep clean, âwear gloves to sponge a solution of one third cup bleach per gallon of water onto the gasket, reapplying it as needed to keep the gasket wet for six minutes,â she says. âAfter, rinse with a little water and continue cleaning the interior of the machine.â

The gasket of a front-loading dishwasher can get very dirty.

## 2\. A regular washing machine cleaning routine
Use this method for regular washer cleaning.
Step 1: Wipe down the washing machine

Sprinkle two cups of [washing soda](https://cna.st/affiliate-link/38emuYjQNWphhCoetWJcrtkPFQeH5iCErviZWrTjkGvb9kvofwnXpuwKv9LKUU5zM4k8sjcioDrMnraMxdVwhptxx16jmnTKnKZEA5C1MT9mF9Z8gEMB2fRoBMsRooq1682FRJHM9kJE3vQQH3oHiUcJSAZVnSyTLEGsJyjWSY7yG6MrZQPGoX3GaJzkBJCoUXfzQTvzqiDdjajWBGyDSazanZssaKV8zGRLNRv5LgBWSvvWm73soVLXtMNi7JKdg9R1WtvfDRGRdxkKHrvL9eSEdcgRWPgJLLUKrAkVN8UgaY9Ht896ieJfMz7NA4DmX3Z2MaUqTACBD7VsMfmVFMYgMvaVD9utufD8e21N4rBo7Jo1Qu37ksER5LqRYWMrCQZi2ahBWUffYxcdepFt2k5rjxPiSDhUeEdKisWgcQocMRHStAgrhof8vZ3RBZieMM8JiDKkyFZg2W) and two cups of [borax](https://cna.st/affiliate-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) and run a cycle. âDuring that hour the washing soda and borax will soften up the minerals and residues enough to deep clean the drain and the washer drum,â Gazzo says.
## How to clean a top-loading washing machine
## How to Clean the Exterior of a Washing Machine
To make sure that the front and sides of your washing machine are clean, youâll want to regularly swipe a disinfecting wipe across them to pick up things like hair, lint, and debrisâas well as any bacteria that may develop into an odor over time. Once youâre finished with the wipe, dry off the damp surface with a microfiber cloth for good measure, particularly if your washer is in an enclosed space without air ventilation.
## How do I clean a smelly washing machine?
The quickest way to get rid of a washing machine smell is to tackle the surfaces and any areas where water may pool, creating a hospitable environment for mold, mildew, and bacteria. Follow the below steps.
Step 1: Wipe down the machine with white vinegar
Spritz white vinegar onto a damp cloth and run it along the top and bottom of the lid of the top-loading washing machine, the sides, and the front of the washer until youâve touched every square inch of your appliance. If you have a front-loading machine, make sure to thoroughly clean out the residue from the rubber seal around the door.

Step 2: Scrub small areas with a toothbrush
Next, use an old toothbrush to get into the dirty nooks and crannies of your machineâs detergent and fabric softener dispensers.
Step 3: Let the machine dry
Always leave the lid open to allow the machine to air dry. Itâs good practice to have a microfiber cloth nearby and wipe down the area of the door after every load.

Spritz an all-purpose cleaner to get rid of smells.

If you have a particularly smelly washing machine, even if you deep clean several times a year, do a monthly cleanse with [Affresh](https://cna.st/affiliate-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) (which is available on Amazon). Affresh is a slow-dissolving tablet made of oxygen-based bleach and sodium carbonate. To use it, select the tub clean cycleâor a normal cycle if your washer doesnât have a cleaning cycle built inâand pop in an Affresh tablet without any clothes. As the cycle runs, Affresh suds up and gets inside all the nooks, crannies, and crevices before rinsing away.
## How to keep a washing machine clean
A good way to clean a washing machine is to keep it from getting dirty in the first place. The below tips wonât stop you from ever having to clean your machine again, but can reduce the time between deep cleans.
Avoid too much detergent
For general washing machine maintenance, know that you donât need to add *more* detergent if the laundry is especially soiled. Adding extra detergent does more harm than good, since it can actually leave soapy residue on clothes and cause unnecessary wear to the washing machine. Check out your washerâs instructional manual for how much laundry detergent to use. These days, concentrated liquid detergents require a fraction of what youâre used to putting into detergent dispenser. To get grimy clothes and towels extra clean, use the sanitize cycle instead of adding extra detergent. The sanitize cycle washes clothes in the hottest water in an extended cycle that is designed to kill bacteria.

Avoid fabric softeners when possible
To help prevent soap scum buildup, Gazzo likes to use eco-friendly products like white vinegar instead of fabric softener. âVinegar wonât leave any soap or fat residue on the drums or the drain,â he says.
## How Often to Clean a Washing Machine
Ideally, youâll want to clean the exterior and interior of your machine once a month to ensure that your clothing remains free from any buildup that may occur, which then allows bacteria to fester. âWhen clean-looking towels have a mildewy off-odor as soon as they get wet, soil build-ups are usually the culprit,â Gagliardi says. âRunning a bleach clean out cycle is an effective and economical way to keep this problem, which is inherent to front-loading washers, under control.â
The silver lining of adding this task to your to-do list is that it doesnât take much more than remembering to accomplish it in the first place. Once your washer is emptyâand youâve double-checked that there are no stray socks or hand towels insideârun a hot cycle with your cleaning agent of choice, and wipe down the exterior as the process gets underway.

Use this method for regular washer cleaning.
Step 1: Wipe down the washing machine
For a regular cleaning of a front loader, you can clean it with a white microfiber cloth and bleach mixed with [dish soap](https://cna.st/affiliate-link/5gn8XrPkbzzdD4v5YDCsy9Wv8J7tCKu5ZVNKVwiX5XR6Fqxypoj4x2eRi3LSbaeNSpDLHKZ1ouyJyQEvnr2SAb1jtPwEV1GXDLy3Ntui2NFDHiS44HjXEB5pRUybiyugqrwxmmknUZMbWfrUQPshthNT4Y7UnBDRMb7RtJfwB79AEWxje7fsVQawPYfD77KHrHSmQrwJykaJn7jGNNH6pACz4qpFuCVYsXxmRHxfKejRRAz3VqPQg3nWhuxcgDgkcgLpTwoYWq81ECFDEjiganwU5WFU2CJzR2FAoW4v3gTKyNQUe9V34bH9D4559FFxCEqjvGMCEQW1PPCrtMDcSJtP41FRCPZDwgZsepDHXL1q8S6SrXz3GYaBZ4QPLF2Xkr1jGGxZT6XQHnXfteqnYNPXNyATX7f6oY828GzZXP25esjmB9JHThw8vag85LZMXnNc63tJXjBqffz2fgcTe2), especially around the rubber seal.
Step 2: Run a cycle with hot water
âSet the washing machine to the highest water and temperature setting and run a full cycle with one cup of white vinegar and around five drops of [lavender essential oil](https://cna.st/affiliate-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),â Gazzo suggests.
Sprinkle two cups of [washing soda](https://cna.st/affiliate-link/38emuYjQNWphhCoetWJcrtkPFQeH5iCErviZWrTjkGvb9kvofwnXpuwKv9LKUU5zM4k8sjcioDrMnraMxdVwhptxx16jmnTKnKZEA5C1MT9mF9Z8gEMB2fRoBMsRooq1682FRJHM9kJE3vQQH3oHiUcJSAZVnSyTLEGsJyjWSY7yG6MrZQPGoX3GaJzkBJCoUXfzQTvzqiDdjajWBGyDSazanZssaKV8zGRLNRv5LgBWSvvWm73soVLXtMNi7JKdg9R1WtvfDRGRdxkKHrvL9eSEdcgRWPgJLLUKrAkVN8UgaY9Ht896ieJfMz7NA4DmX3Z2MaUqTACBD7VsMfmVFMYgMvaVD9utufD8e21N4rBo7Jo1Qu37ksER5LqRYWMrCQZi2ahBWUffYxcdepFt2k5rjxPiSDhUeEdKisWgcQocMRHStAgrhof8vZ3RBZieMM8JiDKkyFZg2W) and two cups of [borax](https://cna.st/affiliate-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) and run a cycle. âDuring that hour the washing soda and borax will soften up the minerals and residues enough to deep clean the drain and the washer drum,â Gazzo says.
