If I could only eat one food for the rest of my life, it might just be
avocados
. I absolutely love their vibrant green color and creamy texture. I use them in everything—from
avocado toast
to
guacamole
to
avocado salads
.
The only downside? I rarely need a whole avocado at once, which means I’m constantly left with half—and we all know what happens next. The second it’s exposed to air, it starts turning brown. And while it’s still safe to eat, the brown coloring doesn't look the most appealing. That’s why I’m always testing new ways to keep my avocados looking fresh. So when a
viral TikTok
claimed to have cracked the code on how to cut and preserve an avocado, I had to try it for myself.
The TikTok-Approved Way to Keep Avocados Green
TikTok user @
mikey_bee99
recently shared a clever avocado-cutting method that supposedly prevents browning. Instead of cutting the fruit lengthwise to split it in half (like most of us do), he simply cuts off the top of the avocado. From there, you scoop out just the amount you need—leaving the rest of the fruit and pit untouched.
"As you use it, you just scoop it out, drop it on your toast," the creator explains. "And as you go down, it exposes a lot less of the surface area. And you just drop it right on a little plate or bowl or whatever, and it keeps it from
going brown
a hell of a lot less."
The video has racked up nearly 700,000 likes and over 10 million views, with plenty of fans praising the tip.
One user
wrote, "As someone who doesn't want the whole avocado on my toast, this is amazing!!"
But others were more skeptical, with one
commenter
asking, “Is everyone forgetting it has a massive seed in the middle?”
As the tip spread across different social media platforms, some users said the trick wasn’t useful to them because they never have leftover avocado—but as someone who often does, I figured it was worth a try.
I Tested the TikTok Avocado-Cutting Hack
The method was surprisingly easy. I grabbed a
ripe avocado
, sliced off the top, and tried using a knife to slice some pieces out, as shown in the video. However, that part was a little challenging, so I switched to a spoon instead, which worked much better. (Pro tip: Use a wooden or ceramic spoon if you want
to avoid metal
, which can speed up browning.)
Once I was done, I flipped the avocado down onto a plate with the exposed side down. I typically find that my avocados start turning brown within two to three hours of being left out on the counter, so that is how long I left this one to sit.
To my amazement, the exposed avocado stayed
bright green
, even after three hours. The trick really worked! I will admit that getting around the pit was a little awkward, as it was very much in the way. But overall, I will definitely turn back to this hack at times when I only need part of an avocado.
If you’re someone who only eats part of an avocado at a time, this method is definitely worth trying. It’s simple, smart, and actually effective at keeping your avocado fresher, longer. And while
freezing avocados
is a solid option when you’ve got extras, this
TikTok trick
is perfect for those everyday moments when you just want a few perfect slices.
